FORTY-FIVE MINUTES AFTER TAKING OFF FROM KATHMANDU, YOU LAND IN LUKLA AND ARE TRANSPORTED INTO ANOTHER WORLD. THE AIR IS CRISP, CLEAN AND SCENTED WITH PINE. THE TRAIL NORTH TOWARDS NAMCHE IS DOMINATED BY THE IMPOSING PYRAMID OF KONGDE. DEEP GREEN FORESTS LINE THE FROTHING DUDH KOSI.

WE CAME TO SEE SOME OF THE SCHOOLS SET UP BY SIR EDMUND HILLARY. THE CHILDREN GREET US AS WE ENTER THE 6TH GRADE OF THE CHAURIKHARKA SCHOOL. The students have on smart blue uniforms. They look alert and happy. The sun comes slanting down from a skylight, reflecting off the pine wood tables and walls and bathing the room in a warm, golden light.

Having seen classrooms elsewhere in rural Nepal, this is a pleasant surprise. It restores my sense of optimism about Nepal’s future. Our generation messed up the country, but I am sure these chil-dren will help fix it when they grow up.

Most of the students are from Sherpa families, yet when we ask them what they want to be when they grow up

none of them say “mountain guide”. Their answers are instead: “Doctor”, “Helicopter Pilot”, or “Teacher”.

The Chaurikharka School is one of 27 set up in the valleys below Mt. Everest by Hillary’s Himalayan Trust. The first school was put up in 1960 in Khumjung. May 2011 will mark the Golden Jubilee of an education project that has trans-formed the Sherpa people.

Ang Rita Sherpa was from the first graduating batch of the Khumjung School and now manages The Hima-layan Trust. He says, “If Sir Ed hadn’t climbed Mt. Everest, all of this prob-ably wouldn’t have happened. It was because he came back to us and helped us with education and health.”

The story of how it all started is now part of Sherpa lore. Hillary had just come back to the Khumbu after a world tour following his first ascent, and he asked the Sherpas what he could do for them. One of his porters told him: “We have eyes but we do not see. Please help us educate our children.”

There is an old faded black and white photograph of Hillary hammering at a nail atop the roof beams of the Khumjung school with Ama Dablam in the backdrop. A modest man, Hillary

helped build many of the schools he fund-raised for. “He was more Sherpa than a Sherpa,” recalls Ang Rita, “His philosophy was that educated Sherpas should come back to uplift their commu-nity.”

Today, there are hundreds of gradu-ates of the Khumjung school scattered across Nepal and the world. One is an airline captain flying Boeing 777's in Germany, several are medical doctors in the US. There are Sherpas with PhD's in conservation. Whatever field they choose, Sherpas have excelled because of their positive outlook on life, their integrity and capacity for hard work.

There is also an increasing trend among the graduates of Hillary’s schools of coming back to Nepal to help their society and nation. They are practicing in hospitals in the Khumbu, they are working as teachers across Nepal, and they are providing valuable experience in the conservation of the Himalayan environment. Hillary would have been happy his students are returning.

Nepal is changing. But perhaps it will only really change for the better when some of the children at the school in Chaurikharka raise their hand to also say, “I want to be a politician.”

Baans Tech Quarter-zip \bawns\Your day began in the pink light of a cold mountain morning. By noon the sun was high and warm. And by the cool of the evening, your shirt, this one, will have worked as hard as you did. The ultra-light, stretch fabric has bamboo charcoal embedded in its fibers to disperse sweat fast and naturally shun the microbial growth that can cause odors.

• Now with contrasting side panels that show the fabric’s reverse side • Thumbholes keep sleeves in place and add warmth• Quarter-zip lets you vent core warmth as needed• Flat-locked seams are comfortable against the skin• Necks seams are reinforced with tape binding for increased durability• Bamboo is a highly renewable, quick-growing natural resource

Chandra Top \chun-druh\Named for the Sanskrit word meaning moon, this technical top is so nice to look at, you’ll be reluctant to hide it under other layers. Like our Baans Tech Quarter-Zip, but without the zip T-neckline, the Chandra is made of a soft, naturally odor-resistant, antimicrobial and moisture-wicking combo of bamboo charcoal and polyester.

• Flat seam construction is comfortable against the skin and under pack straps• Provides serious moisture management, ventilation, and sun protection

(UPF 40+) on hot daysMain fabric: 68.5% polyester / 31.5% bamboo charcoal polyesterContrast panels: 65% polyester / 35% bamboo charcoal polyester

THE LAYER YOU PUT NEXT TO YOUR SKIN IS PROBABLY THE MOST IMPORTANT – and most versatile – thing you will pack. It serves as the conductor between you and the world “out there,” moving moisture away from your skin so you feel dry and comfortable even if you’re working up a sweat. And, depending on

what the weather is doing, it can be worn on its own or under other layers. We use materials that incorporate the latest technologies to ensure you get the best performance available – like our proprietary Dry Zone® “smart” fabric, naturally odor-resistant bamboo charcoal, and easy-on-the-earth, itch-free Merino wool.

THINK OF THESE AS INSULATION FOR THE HOUSE CALLED YOUR BODY. Their job is to gather up body heat and hold it. Most of the time, you’ll be wearing one as an easy warm-up over a base layer. And when the weather dictates a need to throw a shell on top, the streamlined silhouette makes for a hitch-

free, low-bulk, less-constrictive layering experience. When you get to the tea house and it’s time to shed the shell, the handsome styling will add grace to any situation. We leave the social skills to you.

THESE ARE THE SHELL JACKETS AND PANTS TO CHOOSE WHEN YOU’RE GOING TO BE TRAVELING THROUGH COLD WEATHER in all but the wettest conditions. We make them of durable, flexible fabrics, so you won’t feel bound-up or constricted when you’re striding hard on skate skis or reaching

overhead to place your next bit of protection. More breathable than traditional hard shells, soft shells extend your comfort range and reduce the amount of time you spend adjusting layers.

Resham 3-Layer Jacket \ray-shum\Is there anyone who doesn’t need a jacket like this? Featherweight, highly water-resistant, breathable and ultimately packable, it has everything you need to get through an unpredictable shoulder-sea-son storm – and none of the extra features that bulk up the jackets you relegate to gnarlier situations. The Resham is made of an ultra-light, 3-layer bonded fabric, and all seams are sealed throughout. It will shed water in a downpour, but it’s still breathable. When the wind kicks up, cinch the hem down via the left side adjuster. And if you or the temperature goes up, unzip the hand pockets – they’re lined in mesh. The hood adjusts around the face via interior pulls – there is nothing to slap tender skin in a headwind. A hidden adjus-tor at the back of the head reduces the hood’s volume.

• Contoured cuffs have partial elastic and Velcro® tabs for a custom fit• Extra-tall collar provides more face coverage when needed• The waterproof, interior Napoleon pocket is ideal for

Vajra Pants, we don’t leave your legs out in the cold either. Every piece incorporates years of feedback from our Sherpa athletes who live, work and play in the Himalayan mountains.

I NEVER MET S IR ED

FOR A YOUNG SHERPA BOY IN THE SIXTIES, STEEPED IN THE LORE OF

TENZING NORGAY AND HIS GOOD FRIEND HILLARY, I WAS REALLY EXCITED WHEN I HEARD THAT TWO OF THE BIGGEST HEROES WERE COMING TO VISIT MY FAMILY.

THOSE WERE THE MAGICAL DAYS OF MY CHILDHOOD IN KALIMPONG 40 YEARS AGO. My elder siblings and I were the privileged ones, getting private British schooling thanks to our far-sighted Sherpa parents who, uneducated themselves, were gifted with infinite wisdom and the sense of sacrifice to send us to such expensive institutions of learning.

We had enough idols then. We read Zane Grey westerns, watched Audie Murphy fight off 20 injuns single-handedly in Technicolor and read snippets about the wizard Pele who dribbled past eight players and scored goals at will.

But Tenzing was our own, someone we knew proudly and boasted of to my friends as my Agu (Uncle). He and Hillary had conquered Chomolungma in a post-war era of hope and renewal. Tenzing was a frequent visitor to our house and a great friend of my parents. Edmund Hillary I knew only through Tenzing’s biography, this distant white giant who was irritatingly

always spoken of in the same breath when asked about who was the first to climb Everest. We all desperately wanted Tenzing to be the only one, and it irked me that we Sherpas had to share our glory.

I asked my mother about Hillary and she admonished me gently. All Sherpas called him Hillary Saab, she said, and he was kind and unassuming and a great friend of the Sherpas. And very tall. She took out our best silverware, the famous blue willow tea set which I remember seeing in full regalia only that one time.

It was too much for me that here were two living legends, larger than life, descending on us. I became nervous and a bit scared of making a fool of myself, what if I asked too many questions? And so I ran away that afternoon.

I am not sure if Amala ever scolded me, but I know that I have always bitterly regretted not being brave enough to meet Sir Ed. How I wish I could turn the clock back to just say I shook hands with the greatest Sherpa who ever lived. Because, for me and all of us Sherpas, there was no doubt he was a Sherpa more than anyone one of us could hope to be.

In the ensuing years, even in college, I always followed this great man’s journey, through the sporadic news bites and

personal encounters with those who had the good fortune to work with him. I read and heard with deep gratitude about his selfless mission to better the lives of those in the Khumbu Valley. He had moved heaven and earth, literally, to build the very first school in the Khumbu, the Khumjung School. The brilliant careers of many Sherpas today owe it to Sir Ed’s drive and committed compassion to bring education to the Sherpas. In the community, there is a touching reverence that is sponta-neous and genuine for this giant soul.

I felt deep sorrow at his great loss when his wife and daughter perished in a tragic plane accident, and marveled at his fortitude when he led an expedition down the Ganges in the seventies. Next thing I knew, Sir Ed was New Zealand’s ambas-sador, and Nepal finally had the good sense to make him an honorary Nepali citizen in 2003. Such goodwill and honor can only come to those who seek it least.

We live in a cynical world of instant bombast and gratification. Very rarely do we get to meet genuine heroes and honor their achievements. We, at Sherpa Adventure Gear hope that we will be able to contribute in our own small ways to the inextinguishable legacy left by Hillary Saab.

26

Next year marks the 50th Anniversary of the legendary Khumjung School. It was there that a young New Zealander started not just a school but a quiet revolution in education. What began there led to the global success of the Sherpa community today. This is my own humble tribute to one of the greatest Sherpa heroes of all time. Without Hillary Saab, none of this would be possible and I doubt very much if Sherpa Adventure Gear would even exist.

YOU ALREADY KNOW THE SECRET OF STAYING COMFY IN FICKLE WEATHER AND CHANGING ACTIVITY LEVELS: LAYERING. What goes on first is probably the most crucial component. It’s got to manage the microclimate next to your skin – move moisture out, resist odor retention, and keep you dry. That’s why

we make our base layers in “intelligent” fabrics like Thermal° Cool®, Dry Zone® polyester, bamboo charcoal, and Merino wool. They meet and exceed our high performance expectations. And our streamlined styles don’t feel bulky under other layers.

Yeti Zip HoodieJust like its pullover partner, the Yak Pullover Hoodie – but with a full-length front zip and a sleeve pocket on the left arm. The Yeti Zip Hoodie is made of thick and durable cotton/polyester (80/20) fleece that’s breathable, and enzyme-washed for an exceptionally soft hand. Om Jacket \ohm\We all love our down sweaters, but in some situations, synthetic insulation works better. Like when there’s a good chance of getting caught in a downpour – a sce-nario where down’s ability to insulate goes downhill fast. The Om has the look and feel of your favorite down sweater – but it’s insulated with synthetic PrimaLoft® Eco. Soft, compressible, and light, take the Om wherever you wander, whatever the weather.

• Now with full-length zipper for the best fit, easy on/off, and increased versatility

• The featherweight shell fabric is a 100% recycled polyester, mini-grid ripstop: it’s durable, windproof and water-resistant

• Front hand-warmer pockets have zipper closures• Hidden thumb loops on the inside of the cuffs to help keep

sleeves in place when layering
