Hey Folks, Hope this finds you doing well. Summer is officially here and the heat has certainly made its presence known. This is the time of year when yards are being mowed weekly and rain storms occur in the afternoon.

With all those yards being mowed, please watch out when you are riding for the grass clippings on the road. Those clipping make riding hazardous and can make a rider pucker up a little. If you mow grass, please try to keep the clippings from going into the road. As summer is upon us, so are the afternoon rainstorms that show up without much warning. Be aware of loose dirt and gravel that may be washed out of driveways onto the road. We had a heavy rain storm last month and some of the neighbor's gravel driveway ended up in the road.

After it dried, I picked up a broom (I know what you are thinking), and swept the gravel back onto the driveway.

The next hazards are animals on the road. There is no sure trick for avoiding them except be alert. I talked with the Chopper Hill Rally organizer when he called to tell me the July event has been cancelled because a dog ran under his bike as he was traveling and threw him off his bike. He broke his arm in four places and had lots of road rash. Now I've only had a small dose of road rash on my outer knee caps but those buggers took forever to heal, it seemed like because everything kept running into them?

Ride protected! There are so many products out there that can help protect our bodies if we come in contact with asphalt. Diamon Gussett Jeans is one of them. They have strategically placed Kevlar fabric woven into the jeans material, such as the knees and hips/seat area. You can see their ad in this issue for more information. And they are made right here in Tennessee!

Stay in your lane on curves. Riding through small towns with back country roads makes it a little more challenging to ride safely. Some back roads have sharp curves that people tend to straighten out the road and cut into the opposite lane.

One thing you can say is riding takes lots of concentration and attention to stay safe. Ride safe!

The 20th Anniversary motorcycle trek for the Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America began in Carlsbad California

and concluded in Daytona Beach, Florida. Nearly 200 riders made the entire 2,800 mile

route in just eight days. Founded by former NASCAR driver Kyle Petty, the ride raises funds and awareness for Victory Junction, a camp created to enrich the lives of children with chronic or life threatening illnesses. This year riders for the event included NASCAR Hall of Famer and seven time champion Richard Petty, driver Matt Kenseth, former NASCAR drivers Geoff Bodine, Harry Gant and Donnie Allison,

former NFL great Herschel Walker, NASCAR personality Rutledge Wood and possible Presidential candidate Col. Allen West.

With stops in Tucson, Ariz., Las Cruces, N.M., Midland, Texas, Austin, Texas, Beaumont, Texas, New Orleans LA, Tallahassee, Fla. and then to Daytona Beach, Fla., the riders packed on a lot miles for tremendous cause. “What began as just a few friends having a good time riding track to track has turned into what we have today, which is an incredible event that provides thousands of life changing experiences for children,” said Petty. “This is the first year we’ve traveled straight from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean…. and it was great meeting our fans and generous supporters along the way.”

Since its inception by the Petty family in 2004 in honor of their late son Adam, the Camp has served as the Ride’s primary beneficiary. “It’s amazing to see how one tragedy (Adam Petty’s death) can turn into something so incredible like Victory Junction,” said Richard Petty.

Since its inception, the ride has consisted of more than 7,330 riders who have logged more than 10.7 million cumulative motorcycle miles and donated nearly $15 million to Victory Junction Camp and other children’s charities. Southern Thunder Harley-Davidson of Southaven, MS was only recently purchased by Billionaire and

GoDaddy.com founder Bob Parsons. Parsons understands the business that he is in. “We sell fun” is one of his favorite quotes about the motorcycle business. Their slogan: “New owner, new attitude”. On June 7th, Southern Thunder staged their grand re-opening and brought his style of fun to this Northern Mississippi community.

The all-day celebration featured food, vendors and local music groups Trullie Brae, Nuttin Fancy, Dead Soldier and 714. Legendary Black Oak Arkansas took the stage about sundown and were soon combining their unique sound with the thunder and lightning of a passing thunderstorm.

During the break and before the performance of featured group Molly Hatchet, Parsons was introduced to the gathered crowd. His intro began with a patriotic video and color-guard flag ceremony. He spoke about his humble beginnings and how the Boys and Girls Club had helped to form his character as a young man. According to him, “where they left off the Marines took over”.

The Boys and Girls Club of North Mississippi was the beneficiary of a large part of the sales at the grand opening event, with 20% of vendor proceeds and all t-shirt sales going to them. They were surprised, however, when Parsons announced that he would be giving them an additional $100,000 to insure their continued good work at five area facilities.

The Southaven dealership is not Parson’s first venture iinto the motorcycle business. He also owns Go AZ Motorcycles in Scottsdale, AZ, which sells Ducati, BMW, Triumph and other brands. He owns Harley-Davidson of Scottsdale, an award-winning franchise where it was recently announced they would build the largest Harley dealership in the world. When completed, it will be about one-third larger than Harley-Davidson of Daytona at 146,000 sq. ft.

It’s a new direction for the Milwaukee based Harley-Davidson Company, but with the proto-type

complete, the Project Livewire seems headed in the direction of production. Harley-Davidson’s iconic image is that of loud pipes, a big V-twin engine, the open road trips of long distance riding and the word “cool” comes to mind. With constantly rising gas prices and the country continuing in the environmentally friendly mode, Harley-Davidson has stepped up to the plate and entered into new and virgin territory; and they are doing it Harley-Davidson style.

Try this on for size; the Livewire has more torque and power than their 883. It will do 0-60 mph in less than four seconds. It has a nice looking overall design that is easy on the eyes. New light weight aluminum parts make it lighter than the ZERO electric motorcycle model and it can reach a top speed of 92 mph. What more could you ask for? Well, Harley-Davidson wants to know. They’ve built several pro-types to be test ridden across the country and overseas to get feedback and customer thoughts.

Designed at the Willie G. Davidson Product Development Center, The Livewire was kept secret and away from anyone trying to see what the motorcycles looked like before the initial launch. “We are trying to go for emotion here, and not just be about pure function. I don’t just love to ride this bike. I love to look at it, too,” said Mark-Hans Richer, Harley-Davidson’s senior vice president and chief marketing officer.

This is just a search and find mission for Harley-Davidson. There will be many months, even years before a full scale production would commence. “Customers will tell us what they think it will take to make a great electric motorcycle. I am sure we will discover things that we cannot anticipate right now,” said Richer. “It’s an opportunity to learn, and we

will see where it goes.” It doesn’t have their iconic rumble sound from a V-twin; it’s more in the line of a futuristic sound, something like when a jet accelerates to take off. Harley-Davidson wanted their own distinct sound that will please and attract their ideal customer for this new venture. “When it comes to emotion evoked from sound, it can be distinctive, cool and fun. And we think we got that in the Livewire,” said Richer. “There is no transmission. It’s single speed, it’s one of the beauties of an electric vehicle and especially an electric motorcycle,” explained chief engineer Jeff Richlen.

With battery technology changing rapidly, the motorcycle’s limited 53 mile distance on a single charge could be enhanced greatly as lighter and more powerful batteries are developed. This is not the bike for Harley-Davidson’s traditional, baby boomer customers. It will be aimed at younger more urban riders as the distance it can travel currently would not suit the Harley cruiser rider. “This is just going to add credibility to what we have been doing,” said Scot Harden, vice president of global marketing for Zero Motorcycles.

The 2014 U.S. tour is kicking off on another American iconic road, Route 66. It will make stops at several dealerships and then in 2015 the tour will expand into

Canada and Europe.

There is no current timetable for Harley-Davidson to actually commit to mass production for the public, but if the company’s excitement about this venture is any indication, I would give it two years before you’ll be able to ride one of your own. “If anybody can make this (electric motorcycles) cool, it will be Harley-Davidson,” said Chaz Hastings, owner of Milwaukee Harley-Davidson.

My husband and I just returned from a trip to North Carolina.

The second day of our trip was the first day of summer and you could definitely feel the summer heat! I want to share a few tips to make sure summer riding stays fun.

I think one of the most important dangers is dehydration. It causes fatigue and brain fog. So it’s important to hydrate every time you stop. I also like a cup holder with a bottle of water in it. Water is the best way to hydrate. Soft drinks, alcohol and caffeine based products actually contribute to dehydration. Our first day, we rode 627 miles and I know we couldn’t have done it without proper hydration.

Another way to stay cool is to

wet your head wrap – there’s a variety out there. I like a simple stretchy sleeve under my helmet. When I stop for gas, I will wet it down and put my helmet on over it and enjoy great air conditioning for a number of miles.

Keeping enough sunscreen on also helps protect you from burning which can cause you to feel hotter than you actually are, plus wearing light colors can keep you several degrees cooler.

Also, plan your ride. Leaving earlier in the morning or enjoying some of the late evening hours when its cooler can make a big difference. We love back roads but I also try to plan routes that don’t have too many small towns where you spend time heating up at red

lights. Interstate riding can also be hotter because of all the traffic, concrete, asphalt, etc.

If you start feeling overheated, stop and take a break. Many accidents can be directly contributed to fatigue. When you start getting hot and tired, it’s time to take a break and refresh. Start looking for an oasis and have some fun at your pit stop. And remember motorcycling is not about the destination; it’s all about the journey. We were able to ride the mountains of North Carolina, the hills of South Carolina and Georgia and the beaches of Florida. Precious views, precious moments and riding joy equal summer fun! Hope you have a great summer full of memorable riding moments.

Thousands of people came to enjoy the Thunder Beach Rally festivities. There were lots to

do from riding the beach, stopping in at one the Gulf’s favorite watering holes, attending the tremendous music venues all over the area and so much more. This year’s weather was a little better and made for a more enjoyable time. Great venues were set up all over the beach and welcomed riders from all over the country. Harley-Davidson of Panama City Beach had some great vendors as did Pier Park and several other great spots.

The Ms. Thunderbeach contest was one of the best ever and the bike shows were numerous as people brought all kinds of creations to enter. The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation continued its fight against childhood brain tumors on

June 1, when its annual Atlanta Ride for Kids event raised $119,513. The 31st annual event, which took place in Cummings, Georgia, is a motorcycle ride that raises funds for childhood brain tumor research and highlights children diagnosed with brain tumors; the Stars of the day.

Fourteen local Stars rode with motorcyclists before being honored in a ceremony. Maddie Miller, a 15-year-old Star, is grateful for the contributions from donors. “Ride for Kids has raised a lot of money in donations. I’d like everyone to know that they’re helping a lot raising all this money”, said Maddie who is a 10-year survivor.

Although this year’s ride was a success, the foundation continues to battle childhood brain tumors until there is a cure. “What I would like to see is eventually for the ride not to have to be here,” said Mandy Dean, a survivor now in her 20’s. “I wish for the funds we’re raising to actually find a cure.” Natalee West, who attended the ride with Star Dru West said, “Life is short and you don’t realize how much help is needed out there for children that don’t get to live a normal day-to-day life. These kids, they struggle every day. What people are doing in bike rides like this is absolutely amazing. It’s a small contribution, but it has a huge impact.”

Spring Tellico Biker Rally Finds Old Friends & Meets New FriendsBy The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

As we were about to pull into the Tellico Biker Rally, I took a photo of all the campers, tents, RVs and the whole venue. Then I smiled after realizing everyone

had already begun setting up in their favorite spot. Hundreds of people came early and prepared for a great weekend of music and fun. We set up the Southern Biker Magazine tent next to the bridge going to Dickieville and displayed all our swag and new work shirts for everyone to browse and buy. Helping me out for the rally was Bonnie & Keith Pitchford, Scott & Donna McNeese, Kyle Turnblazer & Kate Hall and somewhere in all the fun was Kim Griffin. Peaches took my megaphone and commenced with her MC routine of shakin' up the campers and letting them know what was going on and getting them involved in the games and rally stuff.The 2nd Annual Southern Biker Magazine Catch & Release Fishing Tournament had 20+ fishing contestants who came ready for the challenge. It began Saturday morning at 10am with rain showers, but that didn't stop them from fishing. At 12 noon the fishing was complete and some new faces won trophies; except the Big Fish Award. It again was won by the defending champion Shannon Goodrich. Her husband, Calvin was "Proud" to do a special trophy presentation to her since she won both the largest and 2nd largest fish awards, both fish were largemouth bass.The weather came rolling in with thunderous, down pouring rain but that didn't dampen the spirits of the rally goers, the bike show, the burnout contest and especially the awesome music being pumped out of the Mountain Saloon. Live music roared into the night with all the bands including headliner Exit 60 and CAB.Next year's event is in the works, so remember to come early, get a good spot and commence...Getting Tellico'd!

It’s exciting to see the progress Trey Canard has made after his injuries

last year and rehab into the 2014 Supercross season. Cooper Webb from Morehead City, NC has also made great strides this year as he holds down the #2 spot in the 250 class.

Cancer hits everyone in some way, form or fashion; a family member, a friend or even yourself. It’s hard

to comprehend what that person goes through but friends and family do their best to help in any way. When it’s a child, more people feel their heavy heart and want to help as well. On September 17, 2013, Sara Gentry got the awful news that her 11 year old son, Preston, had and would be battling for his life against Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia.

Leave it to some great friends and a terrific community to put a ride benefit together and help Sara & Preston as much as possible. Over 200 riders came out in support and with the help of the riders and sponsors of the event;

hundreds of dollars was raised with 100% of all donations going to help with medical expenses that continue to mount. An account has been set up at the Tennessee State Bank in Sevierville, TN if you would like to donate and help a child battling cancer.

Smiles were plentiful as the annual Ride4Smiles Poker Run took place in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Riders

from all over the area came to support FACES mission to help children and adults with facial differences. Registration began at Thunder Creek Harley-Davidson as hundreds of riders began funneling into the parking lot. With Poker hand stops including Texas Roadhouse and a visit with Andy the Armadillo, everyone was treated to a great time but more importantly, they donated to a tremendous charity in need of funds to help children with severe craniofacial problems.

FACES , the National Craniofacial Association, is a non-profit organization serving children and adults throughout the United States with severe craniofacial deformities resulting from birth defects, injuries, or disease. There is never a charge for any service provided by FACES. They help those in need with travel expenses, information and creating a support network for the families as well as conducting public awareness and understanding with the public.

“Kim Teems and her staff did an awesome job putting this ride together and the weather was great”, said Frank Pate. Everyone ended the day with a great feeling and looking forward to next year’s event.

the East Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard Performed the Flag Folding Ceremony, 21 Gun Salute and TAPS. It is a very moving ceremony and one that everyone should be a part of. Carry the Flame, Inc. began in 2002 by King Cavalier II when he took the first ceremonial torch, borrowed from the Special Olympics to the Rolling Thunder Candlelight Vigil on Memorial Day weekend in Washington DC. The flame was lit and carried by representatives of the American Gold Star Mothers, American Gold Star Wives, Blue Star Mothers of America and

continues to this day.

Downtown Sevierville, Tennessee thundered with hundreds of motorcycles

who came to pay tribute to our fallen military. The ceremony kicked off with Kelley Stout singing our National Anthem accompanied by “Mr. Lincoln” from the American Eagle Foundation with handler Mike Acuff. Kelley was followed by T.C. Barnett, Jessie Barnett and Kaleb James Wright singing America the Beautiful. Special guest speaker was Retired Lt. Col. Don Campbell who was a pilot during the Vietnam War.

Wreath placement was done on behalf of law enforcement and firefighters and followed by Gold Star Mothers President Brenda Shelton and Sherrie Battle McGhee as taps was played.

the way through Morristown, Tn., Morristown Fire Department ladder truck was sitting in the median with a huge American Flag extended from its ladder for all the riders to ride under.

The closing ceremony on top of the mountain consisted of placing of the wreath while Taps was played. Kelley Stout sang “Till the Last Shot’s Fired” and during a pause in the song, the Honor Guard did a 21 gun salute, then the song finished.

What a memorable tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for our Freedom.

Memorial Day is very special to everyone in the military and everyone who supports them.

Roads into and out of Tennessee and Georgia became the route that held the 2014 Memorial Day Ride To Remember. Several great highways and a stop at a National Cemetery made for a great day to remember those friends and loved ones who fought for our nation’s freedoms.

Baked Chicken NuggetsRecipe Ingredients:3 Skinless, boneless chicken breasts1 Cup Italian seasoned bread crumbs or panko or cornflake crumbs1/2 Cup grated Parmesan cheese1 Teaspoon salt1 Teaspoon dried thyme1 Tablespoon dried basil1/2 Cup butter, melted

Cooking Directions:1. Preheat oven to 400˚ (200˚C). 2. Cut chicken breasts into 1 1/2-inch sized pieces. In a medium bowl, mix together the bread crumbs, cheese, salt, thyme and basil. Mix well. Put melted butter in a bowl or dish for dipping.3. Dip chicken pieces into the melted butter first, then coat with the breadcrumb mixture. Place the well-coated chicken pieces on a lightly greased cookie sheet in a single layer, and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes.

Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauces.

Well, the weather is hot, weekend warriors are out and we are hitting the highways for trips and rallies all

over the southeast But when hitting those highway we all need to be careful and consciously aware of a biker's biggest danger, the 18-wheeler. I don't think it takes a bunch of lawyers to tell you that motorcycles and tractor trailers don't mix. Yet, according to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, the raw numbers may shock you. When comparing fatality rates with tractor trailer accidents between passenger vehicles and motorcycles, the numbers don't iie. The fatality rates multipy 10 times in accidents involving a motorcycle and a tractor trailer when compared to similar accidents but with a passenger vehicle. Althought these numbers are striking, what is more astonishing is the break down as to where these accidents with bikes occurred. When the NHTSA examined how these accidents happened, the research shows that only 16% of the fatal accidents involve rear end collisions, while nearly 60% of these accidents occurred with impact on the side of a bike. Bikers also need to be careful when behind a large truck. The average loaded tractor trailer can legally weigh up to 80,000 pounds. The buren this generates on a big rig's tires creates an immediate hazard for all vehicles, but especially bikes. We have all witnessed a big rig either having a tire blow out, or sheding a tread, but if you are directly behind or adjacent to a truck on a bike, this can become extremely dangerous. On the flip side, an empty tractor trailer can be just as dangerous. The load a trucky is usually hauling centers the gravity of the 18-wheeler. When a big rig is completely empty, something as simple as very strong winds or unexpected braking can force a truck to lose control or even jackknife. So, the moral of this story isn't that highways are unsafe, but instead that as a biker you need to be thinking ahead and protecting yourself at all times. If you are behind a tractor trailer, stay out of their blind spots. A truck's blind spots are much larger than you think. In fact, every bike in this picture cannot be seen by this truck's driver. If you are going to pass a truck, do it quickly. Also, when possible, always pass the truck on the left and stay to the outside of the lane. Tractor trailers have more blind spots on the right side than the left side. Also, don't cut back right in front of a tractor trailer. First, by performing such a maneuver, you may re-enter the lane directly into a blind spot, but more importantly, you don't want an 18-wheeler riding your back tire. A tractor trailer traveling 65 miles an hour will take nearly 600 feet to come to a stop. This is nearly double the time it would take a pickup trucky to make the same stop.
