Hello Readers,Jeff Huggins from Biker Rags in Knoxville,

TN had some great tips on planning a great ride route and I thought they were such great suggestions that I asked if I could use Jeff's suggestions in my next letter. He agreed, so here goes. His words re ect similar expe-riences we have had out riding (ending up on the same rides) and I'm sure many of you will agree.

"Years ago before we opened Biker Rags, Pam and I would get on our bikes to go for a ride but not really have a plan or a route. We would head out into the country, ride awhile and then go back home. Without even think-ing about it, we had begun riding the same rides again and again and realized our rides were starting to be dull.

After we opened up Biker Rags, we start-ed having our Fun Runs which meant we had

to PLAN a route. We then started using this same process for our personal Day Rides. To plan our Day Rides, we start by getting a map. (In this case the internet or GPS won't do because the idea of a Day Ride is to travel back roads and see places you wouldn't ordinarily go to.) We usually pick some place or small town that we've never been to or haven't been to in awhile. Then while looking at the map, we take the long way or around about way to our destination, riding roads that look interesting or go through interesting places. Once we get to our desti-nation, we usually head downtown and nd the courthouse. Almost always, close to the courthouse is a great place to eat. After lunch, we usually walk around a little to see the local sites, and then get back on the bikes and head home a completely different way.

We always preplan these rides by looking at the map, preplanning our entire route and then we write it down on a sticky paper that I can have close by in case I need to check the directions. Take lots of photos and share them on-line."

I hope this inspires you to start planning some great riding routes of your own. We certainly have an unlimited supply of great riding here in East Tennessee.

Honda asked me to test ride their new F6B and give it a once over and get some feedback from an avid bagger rider. So with that, I arrived at the rst dealer that received a ship-ment, Southern Honda Powersports. Walking into the dealership and having my expectations in hand, I was bum-fuzzled; surprised, shocked, just plain ol oored!

The new Honda F6B (Flat-Six Bag-ger) was right in front of me and I didnt even recognize it. Pictures of it do not do it justice. The rst thing, it is not your daddys Goldwing. It has its own new look, lowered, leaner with smooth lines, curved fairing, no tour pak, a shorty windshield and more. I must

    2013 Honda F6BFirst Ride & Review

By The Mag Man, Randy GracyBy The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

have walked around it for 20 minutes looking for what they have changed from their Goldwing touring motorcy-cle. Honda has de nitely made a new, bold styling statement with this motor-cycle. You might consider it a sport touring bike, but in my opinion, they have began a true direction into the bagger market.

The F6B is powered by the 1832cc at-Six, a SHOC two-valve-per-cylinder en-gine thats fed by electron-ic fuel injection with twin 40mm throttle bodies. Its horizontally opposed en-gine aids in keeping the

center of gravity low (which Ill elabo-rate on later) and at only 842 pounds, its de nitely in the weight parameters for a bagger class of motorcycles.

Designed for a run around town and short or long trips, its packed with great equipment for all; premium audio system with iPod/MP3 plug in and a multi-information screen that features a clock, trip meter, air temperature gauge and audio controls. The round chrome exhausts are new as is the different low-er cowlings, gun ghter-style seat and a new body panel between the tops of the saddlebags. Some of the basic Gold-wing options are included, but its the new stuff I noticed the most.

After being versed on the F6B, I took my ride around Chattanooga, Tennes-see onto some of their great riding back roads and testing it on cornering, speed, quickness, adaptability to the road sur-face, braking and to see what looks I got while driving through the downtown area. It exceeded all expectations for what I thought it should do or be able to do. Theres nothing like coming out of a drop down S-curve and having it pull out of the hole like a sport bike.

My rst stop in town was the Ten-nessee Aquarium to take some photos for the magazine and I was immedi-ately surrounded by 20 or so people asking questions. After that, I headed onto interstate 26 by way of taking a short 135 degree curved entrance ramp. I immediately knew I was going too fast to make the turn. I leaned it over further than I ever have any other bike (except a race bike), let off the throttle, it dropped more, got back on the throttle and around the corner and up it came! It didnt scrape and I didnt drop it and at that time my adrenaline was pump-ing to an all time high. When I looked down to see the speedometer, I was now at 65mph right out of the curve.

The light weight, tremendous sus-pension and that large power plant engine with 122 foot-pounds of torque output gives this motorcycle de -nite deceptive speed. When you think youre doing 50mph, youre at 75mph. The speedo registers 150mph. Trust me when I tell you, the needle will swing past that, easy.

The rest of the day was lled with riding and meeting up with some other bagger riding friends. They were im-pressed with what they saw. Pulling back into the dealership about 6 hours later, I was told they were wondering if I was going to bring it back. To tell you the truth, I forgot I was test riding the F6B about an hour before returning it. I was out on a great afternoon of riding and having one heck of time on Hon-das newest reinvention.

They are making two models that will be available; the standard and the Deluxe. The De-luxe is equipped with a passenger backrest, heated grips, a center stand and self-cancel-ing turn signals. Many extras will be available through Honda like LED fog-lights, a taller windscreen and many chrome accessories. The aftermarket parts for this machine will just go bonkers with every-thing you can buy from seats to cruising pegs to up-graded sound sys-tems and more.

Now, the only de-cision left would be; Red......or Black.

The 2013 Monster Energy Super-cross season is well underway and, as always, the cream rises to the top. Current points leader David Mill-saps notched his 2nd win of the sea-son in San Diego and proved his rid-ing is no uke. Millsaps is riding with con dence and consistency associated with being a champion and after ve rounds has an average placing of 2nd place. The unlikely hero of the 2013 season was labeled by former cham-pion Ricky Carmichael as, the hands down favorite to win the title.

The battle to chase down Millsapss 21 point lead is followed by Ryan Dungey and Ryan Villopoto. The two former champions are separated by only three points and both have wins under their belts this season. The only strategy left for them is to simply win and notch as many points as possible. The top three call Florida and Georgia home and with the series moving to the rutted East coast, the racing will only intensify.

With great speed comes great re-sponsibility. Eli Tomacs perfect sea-son came to a halt with a crash in the whoops in Oakland. His mistake re-sulted in a DNF and a surrender of his points lead. The consistent Ger-man Ken Roczen took control of the championship and backed it up with a straight up win at the nal stop in Anaheim. Tomac was able to bounce back with win the following weekend in San Diego, but has a large de cit to

make up. With nothing to lose and everything to gain, Tomac is using his time off in the West to compete in the premier 450 class starting in Atlanta. Coming off a win at the Monster En-ergy Cup in Las Vegas, Tomac has al-ready proven he will be a contender for the podium and guaranteed to mix it up.

With 11 rounds to go, there are still many questions left to answer. Will David Millsaps have any bad luck?

Somewhere in late April, or early May, my friend Robert Finn asked me if Id like to go with him on a mo-torcycle tour in Europe. I had just come back from a three week ride with my wife on our new BMW K1600GTL so I was rather dubious if Id get an-other kitchen pass so soon, but this was such a good offer I had to risk it. Springing the details on my wife, sur-prisingly she agreed and without even having to offer bribes of any sort. This trip was meant to be!

We made the arrangements and the timeline was July 8-18. The tour company was a company that Robert had been referred to through some of his business connections and the price was right. But then, things went awry. The owner of the tour company, a small family run affair, had to cancel due to an understandable family med-ical emergency. So now we had kitch-en passes, passports, and big plans in hand, but no scooters to get us there.

Fortunately, Robert had been to Eu-rope on bike tours before so he was the resident expert at getting things realigned. Although all of his previ-ous trips had been on organized tours he thought we could make it on our own with proper preplanning. We did have to adjust our dates a little due to some work con icts with my job but we pushed ahead and started planning our freestyle Euro-pean motorcycle tour and even squeezed in two extra days leav-ing us with 10 days to ride. To say I was nervous would have been an understate-ment.

The rst thing one must do is get a rough idea of where you want to go. Since

    Robert Finn

I had never been to Europe, I didnt have a clue. Robert had ridden the Stelvio Pass before and wanted me to experience that. So it went in the trip bucket. Then after some conversations in his garage, and both of us talking to friends and co-workers, the bucket started lling up. Soon we had a siz-able bucket list of places we wanted to go. Interlaken, Switzerland; Munich to see the BMW Welt and a factory tour; Berchetsgaden to see the Eagles Nest; Grossglockner Pass; Stelvio Pass; the

Deutsch Alpenstrasse; Nurburgring; and so many more. With map in one hand and highlighter in the other, we started plotting our course. As it came together we decided we would be able to contain our trip to Switzerland, Ger-many, Austria and Italy with perhaps a chance to visit the Czech Republic if time allowed.

With rough itinerary in hand, it was time to start on the logistics phase. Robert had been on an organized tour before and had rented a bike from a dealer in Switzerland. After only a couple of email exchanges, we had con rmation that bikes would be available in Bern and Thun, Switzer-land. I was in charge of getting airline reservations and with the Olympics in full swing getting into Europe was a bit dicey. However, plenty of seats were available to Zurich, Switzerland so that was the place to go. Checking the train schedule it was easy to get from Zurich, to Thun, or Bern. Rob-ert was in charge of getting hotels for our arrival and the price of hotels in Bern was prohibitive, Thun was much better (at only $200 francs per night). So we had the trip bookended; y to Zurich, take the train to Thun, only 90 minutes away, and return via Thun, train to Zurich and y home. All that remained was to ll in the middle ten days...and pack!

To plan the daily destinations we returned to our map. I had met a very nice fellow on the airplane who just so happened to work for BMW. Being a Beemer/Bimmer nut myself, we were able to talk shop for a while. I told my new friend that Robert and I were go-ing to Munich and asked his advice on what to see. He gave me his email address and asked me to drop him a note to remind him. Long story short, he forwarded my email to some of his counterparts at BMWNA and very soon I had passes for the BMW mu-seum, factory, and BMW Welt in hand. In short order, we had two of our days lled; six more to go.

An email to Bruno back at the bike shop in Thun, gave us some unwant-

ed news. I desperately wanted to go get some hot laps at the Nurburgring, which is a privately owned road now with unrestricted speed. Brunos insurance would not cover us on that track so we drew a big X through that destination. But in doing so we opened up two more days of rid-ing. Robert and I each picked a short list of plac-es we wanted to visit and started weaving our high-lighted route out on our maps. We had our arrival and departure reservations and all that was left was the accommodations dur-ing our trip. We decided that too much was in ux and making reservations ahead of time would tie our hands and force us to be too rigid so we opted for the just show up plan.

After our uneventful ight to Zurich, and train ride to Thun, it was time to report to Thun Motorsports at 0900 to pick up our rent-al bikes; a BMW K1600GT for me and a K1600GTL for Robert. Brunos excellent staff was even kind enough to pick us up at the ho-tel on that rainy morning. We had pre signed all the paperwork and made the deposits, etc. The sunny afternoon before the rental pickup was pretty much streamlined. By 10:00 we had our rain gear on, our GPSs programmed and we thumbed the starters on our bikes and were on our way to our rst destination; Interlaken, Switzerland.

Interlaken is a very quaint, but popular tourist attraction in Switzerland very similar to Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Its a very Swiss town with stunning views of the Alps in every direc-tion. Interlaken is also at

the base of the Jungfrau Mountain which is clearly visible and chock full of tourist activities on its own. Sou-venir shopping completed we chose to doff the rain gear as the rain had slacked off to intermittent showers and we pushed onward toward Mu-nich part of the way on some gor-geous back roads and partly on the autobahn. The rain was still sporadic, but moderate at times but the excel-lent protection of the BMWs kept us from having to put our rain gear back on. By the time we arrived at our ho-tel in the Olympic Park we had partly sunny skies.

The next day and half were spent on the campus of the BMW Welt (world) visiting the museum and taking in a factory tour. Also, throughout the day we were entertained by driving and motorcycle exhibitions inside the Welt building. Robert and I both got a VIP ride around the campus in a beauti-fully maintained BMW Isetta. Several

times during the day a factory rider would rumble through the lobby and up and down the stair cases and across the skyway on a Husqvarna 450 dirt bike. And since we were there during Zweiradtag (two wheel days) we got VIP seats for Chris P efers thrilling show. While Munich, was nice and the BMW campus was a great destination, the mountains of Bavaria were calling so we left early in the afternoon when our factory tour was complete.

We jumped on the autobahn south-bound to get us out of the Munich traf c. The unrestricted sections of this awesome road coupled with two of BMWs agship 6 cylinder mega-tourers made short work of the 100 kilometers of super slab. Then, we slowed the pace and headed toward Sonthoffen, Germany, via some of the most scenic roads Id ever ridden. The only drawback was the hot tempera-ture coupled with the local farmers spreading copious amounts of ma-nure resulting in olfactory spasms. The view was well worth any noxious fumes that permeated our helmets.

Sonthoffen came into view early eve-ning and we were ready to settle in for the night. Or were we? This is the only time we had trouble nding lodging. For some strange reason, it seemed every inn and Gasthaus was closed on Mondays. We found a local waitress who directed us an inn 4 doors down that she told us, through her broken English, would have a room available. The burly innkeeper had another thought. Through my broken German and his broken English we were able to procure a room but I rather think we didnt do anything to advance in-ternational relations.
