Staff Corner

Many a Sunday we sing the song “Plenty Good Room”. You will remember the line; "plenty good room plenty good room plenty good room in my Father’s kingdom plenty good room plenty good room just chose your seat and sit down.” Well we pride ourselves on the fact that there is plenty good room at St. Francis de Sales and soon there will be more! You will notice that we are adding permanent seating in the side aisle. We are finding that we need more room here on Sundays, great news! We are configuring the pews so that folks will have a good view of pulpit and altar as well as making the space wide enough for strollers and walkers and people! The pews will be on an angle so that folks are not “off to the side” but made to feel physically part of our worship. How we use space says something very im-portant about who we are and what we want as a community. We encourage folks to move up front as well as move to the center so as to make room for those who come later or for those who may just be testing the waters to see if this is where they want to be. On any given Sunday the waters they test will be filled with people who are welcoming, singing, and joyful in their participation in a com-munity of faith. Pope Francis in his encyclical “The Joy of the Gospel” speaks about encounter as perhaps the most important part of evangeliza-tion. How do people find us? Do they find us joy-ful? Do we invite in a way that is sincere and wel-coming? I think that here at St. Francis de Sales we worship and welcome with joy and sincerity and that it is the real reason that we are “making more room in our Father’s kingdom.” God is doing something wonderful here on 96th Street in creat-ing a community that worships in both spirit and truth. We just have to keep singing “Plenty good room in my Father’s Kingdom” and trust that as we make room and welcome folks the work of God is being accomplished. Fr. Kelly

YOUNG MARRIEDS Has it been a while since you and your spouse have had the chance for a real conversation? Do you wish you had some time to talk with other young couples about topics of concern uniquely to you? We've noticed lots of strollers and new babies and maybe a few over extended parents at Mass lately and we'd like to offer you a place and time to come together and relax a bit. We were thinking of hosting a Sunday brunch one Sunday in late September to give us all a chance for conversation, community building, laughter and relaxation. We can even provide babysitting! (just in the next room...not far away at all....) If this is of interest to you, please let us know. Contact Jayne or Father Kelly via email and we'll get this organized for the Fall.

FORGIVENESS Nearly ten years before, a son and father had parted ways when the business they shared went bankrupt. The son blamed the father. They did not speak to each other again. Then the father became seriously ill. The moth-er called the son and told him he had better come soon. The son walked sheepishly into the hospital room. The father motioned his son to him and whispered: "Did you ever think you could do anything that would keep me from loving you?" Resentment and anger are foul things, the first reading from Sirach tells us. Remember the last things. Stop hating. Live by the command-ments. As Saint Paul writes to the Romans, we are to live for the Lord and die for the Lord. Jesus' parable in today's Gospel reminds us of God's compassion. The immense sin of human-ity has been forgiven and stricken from the rec-ord. We are to forgive others in the same way. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
