• The first candle symbolizes hope and is called the "Prophet’s Candle." The prophets of the Old

Testament, especially Isaiah, waited in hope for the Messiah’s arrival. The purple color symbol-izes royalty, repentance, and fasting.

• The second candle represents faith and is called "Bethlehem’s Candle." Micah had foretold

that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem, which is also the birthplace of King David. The second candle is also purple to symbolism preparation for the coming king.

• The third candle symbolizes joy and is called the "Shepherd’s Candle." To the shepherd’s

great joy, the angels announced that Jesus came for humble, unimportant people like them, too. In liturgy, the color rose signifies joy. This candle is colored pink to represent joyfulness and re-joicing.

• The fourth candle represents peace and is called the "Angel’s Candle." The angels announced

that Jesus came to bring peace--He came to bring people close to God and to each other again. This color is also purple to represent the culmination of love through the Messiah.

• The (optional) fifth candle represents light and purity and is called "Christ’s candle." It is

placed in the middle and is lit on Christmas Day. This candle is white to represent pure light and victory.

Fourth Sunday of Advent TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT 2020

THE VISIT OF THE ANGEL SAINT BERNARD PLEADING WITH MARY

Just think. The whole plan of God for our redemption depended on a young

woman saying “yes”. Now there’s an attention getting fantasy based on someone’s urging Mary to say “yes”. It was done by St. Bernard in the 1100’s. Well now. What is it that Saint Bernard is saying to Mary as we turn the pages of history back a thousand years?

“The angel awaits an answer. It is time for him to return to God who sent him. We too are waiting, O Lady for your word of compassion. The sentence of condemnation weighs heavily upon us. The price of our salvation is offered to you. We shall be set free at once if you consent. In the eternal Word of God we all came to be. And behold we die. In your brief response we are to be remade in or-der to be recalled to life.

“Answer quickly O Virgin. Reply in haste to the angel or rather through the an-gel to the Lord. Answer with a word. Receive the Word of God. Speak your own word. Conceive the divine word. Breathe a passing word. Embrace the eternal Word. Why do you delay? Why are you afraid? Let humility be bold. Let modesty be confident. This is no time for virginal simplicity to forget prudence. Though modest silence is pleasing, dutiful speech is now more necessary.”

And the salvation of the whole world depended on the answer of a thirteen year old girl.

We are experiencing the darkest, longest nights of the year. For centuries, people in the Northern Hemisphere have kindled fires against the dying of the light, turning

away the dark of the winter solstice, and leading the imagination to hope and new be-ginnings. It is thus easy to understand why these solstice celebrations of non-Christian Europe attracted the annual remembrance of the birth of Jesus Christ, the Light of the

World. In time the solstice migrated away from December 25, but the Christmas feast re-

mained in place. From this day, a whole season of celebration developed, stretching from Advent through the days of Christmas, and even beyond to the February 2 bless-

ing of the candles, and beyond that to March 25, the Annunciation, nine months before the next Christmas. Centuries ago, this was New Year’s Day, and many reasoned that it

was the date of Adam and Eve’s fall, and the date of the Crucifixion. The message is clear: don’t let your Christmas be over too soon. Keep the lights blazing into January,

and savor the meaning of the feast!

Religious Education Program Attention Parishioners… St. Mary’s Religious Education Program needs your help!

The Religious Education Program is always in need of volunteer catechists and assistants to help spread the Good News and share the Catholic faith with our parish children. The heart of our pro-gram is the dedication of our volunteer catechists and assistants.

Volunteer help is needed in the following areas:

Catechists (Teachers) – Even if you have never taught before, do not worry. You will receive special training as a first-time catechist and diocesan classes to enhance your faith. All catechists (teachers) will receive all the teaching materials and supplies necessary for each class.

Assistants/Aides – will assist the primary catechist.

Door Monitor – will sit at the inside entrance of the building monitoring who enters or leaves the building.

Call Giovanna Varlese, Director at the Religious Education Office at 917-832-6104 or email at [email protected].

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Giovanna
