A Message from Fr. Bill Un Mensaje de P. Bill

En Roma gritan “¡Habemus Papam!”/ “Tenemos un Papa!” Nosotros podemos gritar: “Tenemos un

lema!” Recibimos 77 respuestas de ustedes; de los 15 diferente lemas, tres recibieron más votos: “Ven y Verás”, “Ven y Verás, Oye la Palabra, Siente al Espíritu” y “Donde la familia y amigos se reúnen en comunidad de fe”. Nuestro Consejo Parroquial estudió sus respuestas, y des-pués de un tiempo de dialogo y reflexión

llegamos a un consenso ─ “Ven y Verás”. Quiero agradecer a quienes presentaron los lemas y luego expresaron su preferencia. Todos los lemas son bue-nos y yo estaría contento con cualquiera de ellos; llevan un tono de invitación y de alegría por nuestra fe en el Señor y en nuestra comunidad parroquial de San Felipe. Ahora, ¿podemos hacer que nuestro lema llegue a ser parte de nuestra cultura en San Felipe? ¿Llegar a ser parte de nosotros, nos identifica, y sea parte de nuestro lenguaje? Cuando alguien pregunta “¿Cómo está San Felipe?”, tenemos la respuesta ─ “Ven y Verás”. Cuando hay un interés en cuanto a nuestras actividades o ministerios o programas ─ “Ven y Verás”. Y que esa respuesta salga del cora-zón, y que invitemos a otros a acompañarnos, que

realmente vengan y vean.

In Rome they shout: “Habemus Papam” / “We have a Pope!” At St. Philip we can shout: “We have a motto!” We received 77 responses from our parishioners; of the 15 different choices there were three that received ‘the most votes’: “Come and See”, “Come and See, Hear the Word, Feel the Spirit” and “Where family and friends gather in a community of faith”. Our Parish Pastoral Council studied your responses, and after a time of dialogue and reflection we arrived at a consensus ─ “Come and See”. I want to thank those who sent us a motto and all those who expressed their personal preference. I would have been happy with any one of the mottos that were presented to us; they are inviting and express a sense of joy in and for Our Lord and our parish community. Now, can we make our motto a part of our culture at St. Philip? Can it become part of us, of our expression, of our vocabulary? When someone asks “How are things at St. Philip? We’ve got the answer ─ “Come and See”. When there’s a question or an interest as regards any of our activities or ministries or programs … we’ve got the answer ─ “Come and See”. And that our response comes from our hearts, and invite others to come along with you, to really come and see.

On Sunday, May 21, 2017, our seminarian, José López will be ordained to the order of Deacon by Bishop David Ricken. The ceremony will take place in St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in Green Bay. After his ordination to the Diaconate, he will serve for the first semester in a parish in Milwaukee and at the same time finish his studies. During his second semester, he will return to the Green Bay Diocese to serve in a parish which will be determined by the Bishop. In the summer of 2018 he will be ordained to

the priesthood.

As a Deacon, José will live in a parish and wear clerical clothing. He will have permission to preach, baptize, witness marriages and officiate at funerals. During his ordination to the Diaconate, the Bishop will ask José if he has the firm intention of being consecrated for the Church’s ministry, and of discharging the office of Deacon with humble charity in order to assist the

priestly Order and to benefit the Christian people.

José will also be asked if he is willing to proclaim the mysteries of our faith in word and deed according to the Gospel and the Church’s tradition, to make a firm and lasting commitment to celibacy as a sign of dedication to Christ for the sake of the Kingdom in service of God and God’s people, and to maintain and deepen his spirit of prayer in keeping with the spirit of

the way of life to which he is dedicating himself.

Lastly, Bishop Ricken will ask José if he is resolved to conform his way of life always to the example of Christ, of whose Body and Blood he will be a minister at the altar, and if he is ready to promise respect and obedience to him and his successors. Having responded positively to each of these questions, Bishop Ricken will present the Bible to José saying: "Receive the Gospel of Christ, whose herald you have become. Believe what you read, teach what you believe, and practice

what you teach".

José comments that he is continuously over-whelmed by the Father's love for him despite his shortcomings. He remarks that “knowing and experiencing this fulfills my deepest desire which is to love and be loved. Through the priesthood, God will use me as a channel for his love and grace to others. My desire is that through the sacraments, people come to encounter the living presence of our Lord. I want to be able to share His love with the rest of the world. This is what keeps me steadfast in my desire for the

priesthood.”

El domingo, 21 de mayo de 2017, nuestro seminarista, José López será ordenado a la orden de Diácono por el Obispo David Ricken. La ceremonia se llevará a cabo en la Catedral de San Francisco Xavier en Green Bay. Después de su ordenación al diaconado, servirá el primer semestre en una parroquia en Milwaukee y a su vez terminará sus estudios. Durante el

segundo semestre, él regresará a la Diócesis de Green Bay para servir en una parroquia que será determinada por el Obispo. En el verano

vida a la cual se está dedicando.

Por último, el Obispo Ricken le preguntará a José si está decidido a siempre vivir su vida conforme al ejemplo de Cristo, de cuyo cuerpo y sangre será un ministro en el altar, y si está dispuesto a prometer respeto y obediencia

a él y a sus sucesores. Si responde positivamente a cada una de estas preguntas, el Obispo Ricken presentará la Biblia a José diciendo: "Recibe el Evangelio de Cristo, en cuyo heraldo te has vuelto. Cree lo que leas, enseña lo que crees y

practica lo que enseñas". José comenta que está continuamente maravillado con el amor del Padre hacia él a pesar de sus deficiencias. Comenta: "saber y experimentar esto satisfacen mi deseo más anhelado de amar y ser amado. A través del

sacerdocio, Dios me usará como un instrumento de su amor y su gracia para los demás. Mi deseo es que a través de los sacramentos, la gente llegue a encontrarse con la presencia viva de nuestro Señor. Quiero poder compartir Su amor con el resto del mundo. Esto es lo que

me mantiene firme en mi deseo por el sacerdocio."

Un Momento para Todo -por Hna. Patricia Vanden Bergh, CSJ

“Hay bajo el sol un momento para todo, y un tiempo para hacer cada cosa.” Ec. 3,1)

¡Sí, hay un tiempo para todo! Y el tiempo para jubilarme de mi ministerio en la Parroquia de San Felipe el Apóstol ha llegado. Como muchos de ustedes saben, yo crecí en esta parroquia junto con el resto de mi

familia. Aunque estuve fuera por casi 50 años enseñando en varios estados y en el Perú, siempre he considerado San Felipe como mi parroquia. Entonces ha sido un privilegio no-esperado de poder servir aquí en el Ministerio Pastoral Hispano. Estos últimos 8 años se llenaron de muchos desafíos, pero en cada momento siempre he sentido el apoyo de muchas personas que son muy generosas y maravillosas. Gracias por darme la bienvenida de nuevo. Algunos al escuchar que iba a jubilarme, han preguntado si permaneceré en Green Bay. Sí,

espero participar como voluntaria en actividades de San Felipe tales como nuestra Conferencia de San Vicente de Paul, y también el programa diocesano de Discípulos de Cristo, el ministerio carcelero y actividades en Casa Alba. Me seguirán viendo por aquí, y por eso no les digo “Adios” sino “hasta pronto”.

La formación religiosa de nuestros niños y jóvenes es una parte muy seria e importante de la misión de la Iglesia y nuestra parroquia. La primera responsabilidad para esta formación es de los padres… papá y mamá. También de los padrinos de Bautismo, a ayudar a los padres de sus ahijados en esa formación. Como parroquia, estamos aquí como su párroco y equipo parroquial para asistir nuestras familias con un programa que presenta el

Evangelio de Jesucristo y las enseñanzas de la Iglesia Católica. En septiembre vamos a unir los programas de español e inglés en un solo programa, ofreciendo clases en ambos idiomas, con clases los miércoles, y todo aquí en nuestra Parroquia de San Felipe. Una clave para todos nuestros programas y ministerios son nuestros voluntarios; nuestros catequistas son la parte esencial del programa de catequesis. ¿Has pensado en servir como catequista, ayudante de un catequista, o monitor en el pasillo? Cuando nos acerquemos, ¿nos

responderás con un “sí”?

A Time For Everything -by Sr. Patricia Vanden Bergh, CSJ

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” (Ec. 3,1)

Yes, there is a time for everything! And the time has come for me to retire from ministry at St. Philip the Apostle Parish. As many of you know, I grew up in this parish along with all the rest of my family. Even though I was away for almost 50 years teaching in various States and in Peru, I have always considered St. Philip my home parish. So for me it was an unexpected privilege to have been hired here as Hispanic Pastoral Minister. These past 8 years have been filled with many challenges, but at every stage I have always felt the support of many wonderfully generous people. Thank you for welcoming me back home.

Since hearing that I will be retiring, some of you have asked if I will remain in Green Bay. Yes, I plan to participate in volunteer activities such as our parish St. Vincent de Paul Conference as well as continuing with other activities such as the Diocesan Discípulos de Cristo Program and jail ministry. You will still be seeing me around so I will not say “Adios” but rather “see you soon.”

The religious formation of our children and youth is a most serious and important part of our mission as Church, as parish. The primary responsibility for this formation in the faith rests upon parents ... mom and dad. It’s also a responsibility of baptismal sponsors, to help the parents of your godchild in that formation. As a parish, we are here as pastor and parish team to assist and help families with a structured program that presents the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the teachings of the Catholic Church. This Fall we are bringing together our Spanish and English programs as “one” program, offering classes in both English and Spanish, meeting together on Wednesday evenings, and all the classes “on campus”… here at St. Philip. A key to all of our programs and ministries are our volunteers; our catechists are an essential part of our catechetical program. Have you ever considered helping as a catechist, a catechist’s helper, as a hall monitor? When we give you that “tap on the shoulder”, will you say “yes”?

Para todos que son dueños de su casa, bien saben que “mantener una casa” es algo constante … re-emplazar lo del techo, reparar una puerta o poner una ventana nueva, es una responsabilidad. Nuestro grupo de Edificios y Terrenos, junto con los Consejos de Finanzas y Pastoral, comparten responsabilidad por “mantener” nuestros edificios y terrenos. El grupo de “Edificios y Terrenos” revisa mensualmente una lista de reparaciones, pequeñas y grandes. Las “pequeñas” no presentan grandes retos, pero los que son “grandes” requieren pedir “evaluaciones de precio” y mirar nuestras finanzas

y presupuesto disponibles. T o d a s l a s ventanas en lo que fue la “ R e c t o r í a ” s on originales; un solo panel de vidrio, marcos de m a d e r a , y contravidrieras. Estas ventanas ya no impiden que entre el frio

o que la calefacción se mantenga adentro. La realidad es que necesitan ser reemplazadas. ¡Y son 36 ventanas en esa casa! Muchos diríamos, “Si fuera mi casa, hace tiempo yo las hubiera cambiado.” ¿Te gustaría considerar, usted o su familia, ser un “padrino” de una ventana? No van a ser vitrales con su nombre en una placa como los del templo, pero sí reconoceremos al donante que quiera ser reconocido. Al dividir el costo del proyecto por 36 ventanas, es $550 por ventana. ¿Esto es más de lo que puedes ofrecer en este momento? For all who are home owners, you know that

“keeping up the house” is a constant …replacing

shingles on the roof, fixing that screen door or

window, it’s a responsibility. Our Buildings and

Grounds group, along with Finance and Pastoral

Councils share that responsibility of “keeping things

in shape” with our grounds and buildings. Our

Buildings and Grounds group does a monthly review

of repairs, both small and large. Those small items

on the list aren’t extraordinary challenges, while the

“big” items require putting out bids and looking at

budge t and

f i n a n c e s

available.

All of the windows

in the “Rectory” are

original; they are

single pane, wood

frame, and with

storm windows.

These windows are

not doing the best

to keep the cold out

and the heat inside; bottom line: they need to be replaced.

And, there are 36 of them! Most of us would probably say:

“If it were my house, they would have been replaced some

time ago.”

Would you or your family consider being a

“sponsor” for a window? They won’t be stained glass

with your name on a panel, as the ones in our church,

but we will recognize those donors who so wish to

remembered. Dividing the cost of this project by 36

windows comes to $550 per window. More than

what you might be able to help with? You can be a

co-sponsor for half or a portion of a window-any

amount is greatly appreciated!

Stations of the Cross come in many sizes, materials and color. The Stations of the Cross at St. Philip the Apostle Parish have a unique history. The current stations in the church are actually the second set of stations in the 79 years the parish has been in existence. The original stations from 1939 were cast in plaster, painted gold, and were very small in size. According to parish history, the first pastor of St. Philip the Apostle, Monsignor Theodore Verbeten, had examined the quality of the stations toward the end of the 1950’s and noticed considerable deterioration. In casual discussions with his housekeeper, Margaret Lamers, it is believed that Margaret offered the services of her sister to replace the stations. Margaret’s sister, Jo Ann Lamers, also worked during this timeframe as a parish housekeeper at St. Leonard Parish, Laona. The sisters often got together on their days off – sometimes at their parents’ home in Wrightstown, but most often in the serene north woods area of Laona. It was there that the Lamers sisters, both accomplished artists, would dabble in painting landscapes and other pictures. Jo Ann offered to paint stations to replace the originals at St. Philip Parish. These stations painted by Jo Ann Lamers are still hanging in the church today. Each individual station is unique in that it consists of a single wooden cross with a circular picture of only the face of Christ. The stations do not show others such as Simon Peter, Veronica or the group of women bystanders. Jo Ann Lamers dedicated each station to the facial expression and emotion experienced by Christ at each stage of his journey to Golgotha. The “rest of the story” is left to prayerful imagination. In observing the 14 stations, some may feel that they look repetitious, but indeed there is a different emotion portrayed in the face of Christ in each station, which is the focus of prayer for that station. In the parish archives is the original certificate written in Latin, signed by Bishop Bona and dated September 9, 1960, which indicates permission from the Diocese of Green Bay to replace the original stations in the church with the new set. The next time you are at Mass, why not use one of these stations as a guide to reflective prayer?

Las estaciones de la cruz vienen en muchos tamaños, materiales y colores. Las estaciones de la cruz en la Parroquia de San Felipe el Apóstol tienen una historia

única. Las estaciones que actualmente están en la iglesia son en realidad el segundo conjunto de estaciones que hemos tenido en los 79 años de

existencia de la parroquia.

2017 Facilities Projects - by Bill Noel

As Fr. Bill noted on page 4 of The Messenger, our Building and Grounds Committee has been working hard to identify and prioritize facility maintenance and improvement projects that are needed in order for our facilities to continue to meet our needs. Fr. Bill wrote about the rectory window project. Some other projects that have started

or are planned for 2017, include:

Roof repairs – two phases of slate roof repairs have been completed, and more roof work is anticipated during 2017 and probably beyond.

Heating and ventilating repairs and improvements – our heating and ventilating systems are being upgraded, for better performance, dependability, and the ability to control temperatures and ventilation from one central location.

Religious Education area improvements – with the plans to bring our Religious Education programs together at St. Philip for the upcoming school year, plans are being formulated for some aesthetic as well as heating system improvements to improve the comfort of our facilities.

Asphalt parking lot repairs – continuing work done in several recent years, plans are to repair several “potholes” this summer.

New parish telephone system – our existing telephone system is old and sometimes unreliable, and lacks several features that are “taken for granted” with more modern phone systems. Plans are moving forward to replace the parish phone system during 2017.

Urinal flushing system – some of our urinals in men’s bathrooms still have their original “drip system” for flushing. These flushing systems use an excessive amount of water, and even with that sometimes don’t flush at an appropriate frequency. We are planning to modify these urinals so that they have manual flush handles. A grant application has been submitted that hopefully will cover the cost of this project.

Church sound system – proposals have been requested for replacement of the church sound system, as well as installation of a “hearing loop” to help people with a hearing aid or with a hearing deficiency. This project is being evaluated to determine if it is feasible to proceed at this time. If so, we hope to also install new speakers and controls in Verbeten Hall beneath the church.

Funding for this work is a consideration for what can be completed. We expect that some of this work will be included in the 2017-18 fiscal year budget; some may need to be delayed or eliminated. If you can help with any of these projects or with the rectory window project as described on page 4, your generosity will be greatly appreciated!

Estos sistemas utilizan una cantidad excesiva de agua e incluso a veces el agua no baja a una frecuencia apropiada. Esperamos modificar estos orinales para que tengan mangos de descarga manual. Se ha remitido una solicitud para una subvención que cubriría el costo de este proyecto.

• Sistema de sonido de la iglesia – propuestas han sido solicitadas para la sustitución del sistema de sonido en la iglesia, así como la instalación de un "sonido inalámbrico" para las personas con audífonos o con una deficiencia auditiva. Este proyecto está siendo evaluado para determinar si es posible realizarse en este momento. Haitian Metal Art -by Sr. Helen Keyzer, ANG

Four groups of volunteers from throughout our Diocese of Green Bay traveled to the Dominican Republic in February and March of this year. They helped build two rural chapels in our diocesan mission in Elías Piña where Fr. Mike Seis is pastor, and with Sr. María Marciano they crossed the border into Haiti and worked on agriculture and community development projects. Interested in joining me on a mission trip? Info is posted on our parish website, and soon we will be posting the dates for our 2018 mission projects. Our groups are comprised of women and men, from 18 years old to 90; some have construction skills, and the rest of us acquire these skills on site. Each volunteer pays their way, so that all funds that are raised are used only for the building

projects …100% !

Arte Metálico de Haití -por Hna. Helen Keyzer, ANG

El arte haitiano con tambos hechos de acero (que anteriormente se utilizaban para el aceite) se compra cerca del Puerto Príncipe. Se transportan en carretilla o

encima de un taxi a Croix-des-Bouquets, el pueblo céntrico de la orfebrería haitiana. Las piezas de arte son hechas de tambos reciclados con una capacidad de 55 galones de aceite. Después de que los bordes redondos son removidos, ponen hojas deshidratadas de plátano o de caña en el centro, e incendien el tambo para quemar cualquier pintura o residuos. hacia abajo. Después el artista aplasta el tambo metiéndose adentro, utilizando todo su peso, empujando sus pies, piernas, brazos y hombros para aplanarlo. Entonces puede ser golpeado en un "lienzo de metal" plano. Un diseño se dibuja con tiza en la hoja de metal. Aquí es cuando verdaderamente comienza la obra de arte. Utilizando un martillo, cincel y una variedad de herramientas primitivas, se recorta una forma y los diseños decorativos son golpeados en el metal. Con este trabajo se crea valioso arte individual primitivo. Las piezas terminadas a veces son firmadas por el artista y cubiertas con un acabado para protección. En nuestra oficina parroquial tenemos una muestra del arte que se hace en Haití. También tenemos algunas otras piezas. Esperamos expandir nuestro inventario para que los ingresos beneficien a los Amigos de Haití. Haitian Art comprised of Metal Steel Drums (once used to carry oil) is purchased near the port of Port au Prince. It is brought by a hand cart or on top of a taxi to Croix-des-Bouquets, a town which is the center of Haitian metalwork. The oil drum art pieces are created by using the recycled 55 gallon oil drums. After the artists have the round rims taken off and they place dried banana or sugar cane leaves in the center, they set the drum on fire to burn off any paint or residue. When cooled down, the drum is cut from top to bottom. Next the artist flattens the drum by climbing inside of the drum and using all his weight, pushes his feet, legs, arms and shoulders to open it up. Then it can be pounded into flattened “metal canvas.” A chalk design is drawn on the metal sheet. Now the real

art work starts. Using a hammer, chisel and a variety of primitive tools, a shape is cut and decorative designs are pounded on the metal. With the technique described, individual and treasured primitive art is created. The finished pieces are sometimes signed by the artist and coated with a protective finish. In our Parish Office we have a sample of a wall art that was done in Haiti. We also have a few other

pieces. We hope to grow our inventory, with the proceeds of sales benefitting Friends of Haiti. These sales along with the sales of greeting cards, greatly assist the people of Haiti. Cuatro grupos de voluntarios de distintas parroquias de nuestra Diócesis de Green Bay viajaron a la Rep. Dominicana en febrero y marzo de este año. Ayudaron a construir dos capillas en Elías Piña donde Padre Miguel Seis es párroco, y con la Hermana María Marciano cruza-ron la frontera a Haití para trabajar en proyectos de desarrollo de comunidades y agricultura. ¿Estás interesado/a en acompañarme a las misiones? Información está en nuestra página de internet de San Felipe, y pronto pondremos las fechas proyectadas para el 2018. Los grupos son de mujeres y hombres, desde 18 a 90 años de edad. Algunos tienen conocimiento de construcción y otros aprenden al hacerlo. Cada voluntario paga su propio viaje. ¡De este modo, el 100% de los fondos recaudados son utilizados para los proyectos de

construcción!

Join fellow parishioners on a Pilgrimage to The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse, WI. This motor coach bus trip will depart from St. Philip Parish at 7am and return at approx. 9 pm on Monday, May 29, 2017 (Memorial Day). Parish Picnic, August 6, 2017- Come and join us for our summer fundraiser - full of fun, music and wonderful food! The Fiesta is held on our parish grounds, just in front of our parish offices. Last year, there were many from our English and Spanish communities who got to know each other and enjoyed a beautiful summer day at a fantastic picnic. Mark your calendars !
