eOur HippodromeCREATIVECurtain Raisersaw a group of talentedchoreographers anddancers aged 12-19create and perform anoriginal dance piece onour main stage to afull-house before aperformance ofMatthew Bourne’sSleeping Beauty.New Adventures & Re:Bourne worked again inpartnership with Hippodrome CREATIVE to create the7th annual Curtain Raiser with students broughttogether from Birmingham Ormiston Academy (BOA),Stratford Upon Avon College (SUAC), Elmhurst Schoolfor Dance and Walsall College.

The piece was created in just five intensive sessionsand choreographed by six young local dancers, all ofwhom are previous Curtain Raiser performers fromBOA and SUAC. They were supported by professionaldance teachers Joe Walkling (New Adventures &Re:Bourne) and Clare Palethorpe (HippodromeCREATIVE) and used the Sleeping Beauty story asinspiration for the piece.

The dancers wowed the audience, and generousbucket collections on the night raised over £1,600shared between Hippodrome CREATIVE and NewAdventures & Re:Bourne to help fund further creativeprojects with young people.

The Curtain Raiser project gives young dancers afantastic opportunity to work alongside professionalsand get a taste of what it’s like to perform on stage at alarge scale theatre.

As a dancer you focus on just yourrole in the piece. Butchoreographing this year I had toconstantly think about everyone inthe Curtain Raiser, which comeswith such a sense of responsibility.

most successfulyear yet!

This January we delivered thethird Relaxed Performance ofour annual pantomimeworking in partnership withQdos Productions. An audience of over 1,350, the majority with autism, special needs or complex disabilities attended ourmost popular pantomime yet – Aladdin – starringJulian Clary, Lee Mead and Marti Pellow. This is anincrease of almost 40% since our first RelaxedPerformance in 2014.

For this special performance we make alterations tothe theatre environment and to the production itself tomake it a relaxing and inclusive atmosphere for all. This year we offered a playroom and a sensory room, easy to understand signage and additional wheelchairspaces.

Before their visit all theatregoers received a welcomepack and a specially made film. During the show itselfour house lights stayed up and the doors remainedopen so that the audience could come and go as theypleased. The production was also signed, captionedand audio described.

This year we were thrilled that Pantomime DameAndrew Ryan introduced the show and all the specialeffects to the audience – allaying any fears and gettingeveryone into the panto spirit!

We have a special thank you to make to Mr & MrsVarney (pictured above) Patrons of the theatrewho this year enabled us to purchase additionalsensory toys for the relaxed performance. Thesetoys will now be used in all our work withchildren, young people and adults with accessneeds.

Also a big thank you to our friends at IrwinMitchell (pictured right) and Calthorpe Estateswho have yet again volunteered at the RelaxedPerformance.
