IT HAS CONTRUBUTING AREA OF 23,000 SQUARE MILES.IT IS A MULTI-PURPOSE PROJECT.CONSTRUCTION WAS COMPLETED IN SEPTEMBER 1964.

THE FLOOD OF RECORD OCCURRED IN OCTOBER 1986.
THIRTY (30) FLOOD-CONTROL RESERVOIRS IN ARKANSAS RIVER WATERSHED IN OKLAHOMA AND KANSAS.
THE LOWER 13 RESERVOIRS HAVE 7.6M TOTAL ACRE-FEET OF FLOOD-CONTROL STORAGE.
THERE IS AN UNCONTROLLED AREA OF 7,200 SQ. MI. BELOW THE RESERVOIRS.

DOWNSTREAM REGULATION IS BASED ON THE PERCENTAGE OF STORAGE UTILIZED IN THE BASIN.

WHEN RESERVOIRS EXCEED FLOOD-CONTROL CAPACITY, RELEASES ARE NOT BASED ON THE SYSTEM.
DOWNSTREAM REGULATION
AN ADDITIONAL 550,000 ACRE-FEET OF STORAGE BECOMES AVAILABLE AS THE GATES ARE RAISED TO EL. 757.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT FLOOD-CONTROL DAMS ARE DESIGNED TO REDUCETHE DOWNSTREAM IMPACTS FROM FLOODING, BUT THEY DO NOT ELIMINATE FLOOD RISK!
WITHOUT KEYSTONE AND KAW DAMS, THE FLOW ALONG THE ARKANSAS RIVER WOULD HAVE BEEN 375,000 CFS!
