    The Importance of the

    Respiratory System

    Do you know why your

    Respiratory System is

    important? You must

    breathe air to stay alive.

    When you breath you

pull fresh air into yourbody. Fresh air contains

    an important gas called

    oxygen. When you

    breath, oxygen travels

    all around your body.

FUN FACT: In your l ifetime you

breathe in and out about 50

    million times.

    Vocab:Oxygen: Gas humans need tolive.

    My lungs trade air with

    my blood, my heart

    pumps oxygen poor blood

to my lungs, so then my

lungs take carbon dioxideand other things that my

blood does not need out of

    my body. My blood gives

    back fresh oxygen to my

lungs. After the trading isdone my blood goes back

to my heart to start the

    cycle again.

    VOCAB:

Carbon Dioxide: A gas made out of 1 carbon and 2 oxygen.

Cycle: Any completed round series of occurrences that is repeats or is repeatead.

Lungs: an organ of the body that he lps you breath.

Heart:a muscle that pumps blood to your body.

    Process of the Respiratory

    System

Would you like to know what is theprocess in the Respiratory System?

You breathe air into your nose ormouth. The air then goes through thelarynx and then down to the trachea(also called the windpipe) and into

the lungs . We breathe by using thediaphragm, a muscular membrane

under the lungs . When the diaphragmcontracts and pulls down, the lungsexpand and air enters(inhaling). When the diaphragmrelaxes, air is exhaled from the lungs.

Diaphragm: Muscular membrane under the lungs.

Larynx: A muscular structure at the top of the trachea.

Muscular Membrane: a thin flex ible layer of plant oranimals tissues that covers, line separates or connectsparts of the body.

Heart: a muscle that pumps blood to the body.

Trachea or windpipe: the tube in humans extending fromthe larynx to the bronchi, ser ving as the pr incipalpassage for conveying air to and from the lungs.

    Contracts:Pulls down.

Expand: Ge ts bigger or larger.

Exhaled:let out air out of the body.

    Inhaled:let air into the body.

Air comes into your body throughyour nose, and then it travels waydown to your trachea (windpipe) then

to your bronchial tubes, then to bothyour lungs.Red blood cel ls get theoxygen from the lungs. The red bloodcells also drop off carbn dioxide.

    VOCAB

Bronchial tubes: A bronchus or any of its ramificationor branches.

Trachea or windpipe: the tube in humans extendingfrom the larynx to the bronchi, serving as theprincipal passage for conveying air to and from the

    lungs.

Parts and Organs of theRespiratory System

Would you like to know whatsome parts that make up theRespiratory System are? Yournose, mouth, windpipe, lungs

and ribs are the parts of yourbody that help you breathe .Together they make up theRespiratory System.

FUN FACTS: My lungs can holdas much air as a basketball .

windpipe: the tube in humans extending from the larynxto the bronchi , serving as the pr incipal pas sage forconveying air to and from the lungs.

ribs: the bones that make up the rib cage

Lungs:an organ of the body that helps you breath.

People have two lungs that arelocated on either side of the heart

within the r ib cage . The t wo lungs arenot identical, the right lung has threelobes and the left lung has twolobes. My lungs help my body breath. My lungs are fi lled with millions ofelast ic sacks that get filled with airand then let the air out.

    Elastic sack: stretchy little sacks

lobes: a subdivision of a bodily organ or part.

rib cage: the enclosure formed by the ribs andthere connect ing bones

Lungs: an organ of the body that he lps youbreath.

Illness and Disease of theRespiratory System Would you like to hear about

some really interestingdisease about theRespiratory System? Imgoing to tell about three of

    them, Tuberculosis (TB),Bronchitis and Anaphylaxis.

Bronchit is: inf lamacin of the membranelining of the bronchial tubes, caused byrespiratory infection or exposure tobronchialirritants, as cigarette smoke.

Anaphylaxis:exaggerated allergic react ionto a fore ign protein result ing f rompreviousexposure to it.

Turbeculosis:an infectious disease that mayaffect almost any tissue of thebody, especially the lungs, caused by the organismMycobacteriumtuberculosis, andcharacterized by tubercles.

Diseas: any harmful, condition, as of themind or society.

Im going to start tel ling you aboutturbeculosis.Tuberculosis is a disease causedby a type of bacteria called mycobacterium

tuberculosis. TB mainly affects the lungs

although it can also affect other organs.TBcan progress and spread al l over the lungscal led progressive tuberculosis. This causessigns and symptoms like fever, weightloss ,cough and loss of appeti te. TB iscontagious when someone with TB coughs it

can be spread to other people. The time ittakes for a person to become infected afterbeing exposed varies from weeks to years.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis: A pathogenic bacterial specie s inthe genus mycobacterium and the cause of most cases of

    tuberculosis

Turbeculosis:an infectious disease that may affect almost anytissue of thebody, espec ially the lungs, caused by the organismMycobacteriumtuberculosis, and characterized by tubercles.

Diseas: any harmful, condition, as of the mind or society.

Progressive tuberculosis: tuberculosis but in a progressive waythat spre ads a ll over the lungs.

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergicreaction that can come on suddenly.Someone with certain types ofallergies can be at risk for sudden,

potentially life threatening allergicreaction called anaphylaxis. Somesymptoms are diff iculty breathing,

tightness in throat (airways areclosing),trouble speaking, nausea, vomiting, fast heart beat and

wheezing.People can tell if anallergic reaction is emergency if ithappens in skin, RespiratorySystem, cardiovascular system andgastrointestinal system.

Allergic reaction: Generalized reaction of anorganism with a specific allergen to which

the organism has been prev iously sanitized.

Allergies: An abnormal reaction of thebody.

    anaphylaxis: Exaggerated al lergic reaction.

Bronchitis is an inflamation of the liningin the bronchial tubes (the airways thatconnect the trachea or windpipe to thelungs) this dedicated mucus producing lining

covers and protects the RespiratorySystem. When a person has bronchitis, itmay be harder for air to pass in and out of

the lungs, the t issues become irritatedand more mucus is produced. The mostcommon symptom of bronchit is is a cough.

Bronchit is: inflamacin of the membrane lining of thebronchial tubes, caused by respiratory infection or

exposure to bronchialirritants, as cigarette smoke
