The Attitudes of CMULHS Freshmen Students Towards Mathematics
Introduction
Background of the study
Mathematics demand greater attention and investment in the societys educational
plans. This is especially true in the world today which becomes more computer and math
oriented by the hour. Considering its fundamental nature- its presence in various sciences-
its influence in the growth and development of thought, strengthening the foundation of
research.. Mathematics is of great importance. This is presently why mathematics is
practically the only subject which is taught in every school around the world.
Unfortunately, despite absorbing a wealth of human and financial capital from the society,
family, and government, mathematics is one of the most problematic subjects: lack of
interest in studying math is seen in all nations.
Research centering on students attitudes towards mathematics has received
increasing attention. Studies have shown that factors such as motivation and attitude have
impacted students achievement. Moreover, instructional strategies may also support
students need in order to increase student achievement.
Some academic sources attest that girls have a lower performance than boys; in
numeric and mathematical logic ability, while in the social sciences they out-performed
boys. Moreover, other studies have shown that girls are less enthusiastic in taking math
classes.

Objective of the study
The study aimed to:
a. Know the attitude of the CMULHS freshmen students towardsmathematics.
b. Compare the attitudes of the CMULHS freshmen students.c. To compare difference in attitudes by gender for the surveyed students.
Significance of the study
Mathematics is one of the problematic subjects for students. Investigating the
attitudes of the students towards math is significant since the students attitude
towards the subject is one of the factors which affects the students learning.
Comparing the attitudes by gender is also significant because boys and girls show
different performance towards mathematics. This study is very useful for teachers
because knowing their students attitudes towards the subject gives them idea on
how they will teach their students more effectively.
Scope and limitations
A total of ninety-nine freshmen students for CMULHS were surveyed. A total of
thirty-three students from each section participated the study. A total of forty-two boys and
fifty-seven girls. Each student answered a questionnaire which contains twenty questions.
Only the attitudes of the students towards mathematics was studied.
