WILSON VOLUME 8 CLAWSON-TROY ELKS #2169 June 2017
UPCOMING EVENTS EXALTED RULER’S MESSAGE
Members All,
Mother's Day was awesome, thank you to all who attended to make it a very special day.
There is a lot going on in the lodge this month.
We not only have a new Elks Awning in front, our Elks sign is fixed and it lights up the whole street! The parking lot has been fixed. That project was a full dona-tion from an anonymous donor! A Huge Thank You goes out to them for their kindness. We now need volunteers to help resurface and paint yellow lines, so please watch for that date!
Flags day is June 14! Hope to see you all out to attend! Every other Sunday is brunch at the lodge, proceeds go to Gold Key.
Joe Hopper is in need of volunteers to play Bingo at the Vets hospital on the Third Tuesday of every month starting in June!
I would like to Thank all the members that have put in many hours of volunteer time at the lodges to make our Great lodge a success. Please join us! Ask any officer what you can do to help.
Have a great Memorial weekend, hope to see ya at the Lodge soon.
Fraternally,
Sherlyn Wilson 2017-2018 Exalted Ruler

Elk Eye Subscriptions Offered!
In an effort to defray costs, we have stopped mailing the Elk
Eye to every club member. Instead, the Elk Eye is emailed and
posted on the club website at

net or email and would like to have the Elk Eye mailed. In or-
der to accommodate this request, the Board of Directors has
authorized a subscription service for the Elk Eye of $25 for a
full year. This will cover the cost of printing and postage and
allow us to accommodate the requests of our members.
In order to subscribe to the Elk Eye, fill out the form below
and bring it to the lodge or call the lodge at 248-588-6500 .

The Story of the Friendly Elk…
Courtesy of Sue Palmer: Lodge Secretary
Firefighter Is Battling A Wildfire When An Elk Walks Up Behind Him… But Watch What
Happens!
All animals need a community — a group of fellow creatures to hunt with, travel with,
and make life a little less lonely. For some wild animals, losing their birth family means
they need to find their own community in other ways.
In Kittitas County, Washington, locals knew about an elk who would wander onto near-
by farms after being abandoned by her family. The elk was known to approach cows and
goats, but her search of companionship hasn’t stopped with friends of the four-legged
variety… as one group of first responders recently learned firsthand!
One day, a group of hard-working firefighters responded to a blaze in the woods of
Kittitas County, Washington. While on a break at one of their command posts, they got
a welcome surprise after a hard day’s work: a friendly elk walked up to say hello!
The elk, named Buttons, is a fixture in the community, and many locals have seen her
hanging around their ranches and farms. Buttons was abandoned by her family at a young age, so she started hanging around
with groups of cows and goats on a nearby hillside.
She’s been a part of the Kittitas County community ever since, and she’s even become something of a local celebrity. While most
elk keep a safe distance from humans, Buttons has no hesitations about saying hi up close. Sometimes she even shows her affec-
tion in the form of a nuzzle or a sloppy kiss!
Several elk herds have come through the area, but Buttons seems to prefer
hanging out with her new friends — animals and humans alike. The fire-
fighters reported that during her visit to their post, this sweet elk made sure
to make the rounds and give kisses to every officer there.
With so much love to go around, it’s safe to say that Buttons the elk will
never be lonely again!
Remember, as Elks our actions define not only us, but the organization and
morals we stand for…
Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love & Fidelity…
Wherever you may roam in life… Always be a friendly Elk….

Messages from the GER Meeting the needs of veterans and military members
Message from the Grand Exalted Ruler
MICHAEL F. ZELLEN
The Elks National Veterans Service Commission was established in 1946, immediately after World War II, with the sole mission of
“Serving Our Nations Veterans.” Though much has changed since then, the Elks’ dedication to serve our veterans and military
members in need has never changed.
Recently, I traveled to Washington, D.C., the epicenter of the military and veterans’ affairs government agencies. Joined by Past
Grand Exalted Ruler Paul Helsel and Government Relations team members Shawn Bullard and Jennifer Naaden, we met with top
military and veteran officials. In these meetings, I received resounding gratitude and admiration for the Elks’ service to the military
and veterans.
The leaders asked the Elks to join them in addressing two challenges. First, numerous veterans are struggling to find employment.
Frequently employers misunderstand a veteran’s skill set and how to utilize it. This confusion has led to an increase of homeless
veterans.
Second, there is a lack of awareness among the National Guard Bureau of the Elks’ programs available for their members, veterans
and their families.
How can your Lodge alleviate these problems? The answer will vary Lodge to Lodge, but here are some ideas. Your Lodge could
facilitate career fairs, host workshops for business leaders on translating a veteran’s skills into success, and provide veterans with
professional skills training. Additionally, your Lodge could provide scholarships for veterans to further their education.
Since the onset of the War on Terror, National Guard members have been called to serve at an unprecedented rate. This has creat-
ed difficulties for soldiers and their families. Vice Chief of the National Guard Bureau Lieutenant General Hokanson asked for great-
er collaboration between National Guard units and Local Lodges.
Hokanson has shared information on the Elks’ programs, encouraging his Adjutant Generals to form relationships with Local Lodg-
es. I ask every Lodge to reach out to your local National Guard unit and engage it on how to best support the soldiers and their
families.
Look for more details of my D.C. trip in the July/ August edition of The Elks Magazine for more about the new partnerships with
congressional, administration and military leaders.
May God bless our veterans and the men and women who serve in the military worldwide, and may God bless America. They will
all be in the line of duty, and some of them may give their lives in that duty.
Thank you for Caring and Sharing and for continuing to demonstrate that, “Elks are Leading the Way.”

ENF in Your State! Each year, the Elks National Foundation aims to grant more money back to your state than it received from your state in donations. These grants help fund the state Elks associations’ major charitable projects, which include aid for people with disabilities, cancer research, children’s hospitals, youth camps, and safe havens for abused fami-lies. One beneficiary is, the Games Uniting Mind and Body Or-ganization. The program was created by the Louisiana Elks Association. GUMBO is a track and field competition designed for school-aged students with physical or visual disabilities. GUMBO presents an opportunity for the stu-dents to earn the positive characteristics of participating in sports, such as, self-confidence, testing one’s physical abilities, and setting goals that lead to success. Learn about other state major projects here: enf.elks.org/StateGrants. In 2017-18, the Elks National Foundation granted $9.35 million to state Elks associations through State Charities Grants, Special Project Grants and Bonus Grants. These grants help fund each state’s major charitable projects. To find out how the ENF is helping your state, visit enf.elks.org/YourState
