THE CONNECTION
April 2016
Phyllis Stump
We have received the ashes; we have celebrated with palms; we have felt the passion and pain of our Lord; and we have rejoiced at His rising and experienced the joy of Easter. What a wonderful season.
Now we have another wonderful season ahead. First, uppermost in our minds perhaps, is the progress that is being made daily toward our kitchen renovation and new elevator. We are seeing the fruits of our prayers and our generosity.
Some upcoming dates to plan for and look forward to include:
Sunday, April 10: Pray for General Conference The United Methodist Council of Bishops has invited each annual conference to designate one day to pray for the General Conference, which will begin Tuesday, May 10th, in Portland, Oregon. Because the UMC has 131 annual conferences throughout the world, these days of prayer began on Friday, January 1st, and will continue to the opening of the General Conference on Tuesday, May 10th. Our bishop has selected Sunday, April 10th, to be the Virginia Conference’s day to pray. Saturday, April 30: STOP HUNGER NOW
God bless our efforts.
THEATRE OUTING
Sunday, April 10, at 2:00 p.m. join a group from Centenary as we attend a Quill Theatre production of King Lear at the Leslie Cheek Theatre in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. In this most epic, heart-rending of Shakespeare’s tragedies, Lear, the aging King of Britain, intends to divide his kingdom among his daughters and live out his remaining years untroubled. His attempt to force their public declarations of love goes disastrously awry and leads to the devastation of his kingdom, his family, and himself. Loyalty crumbles in this fretful world, sanity is fleeting, and primal emotion dominates. All that can be trusted is… nothing. Tickets will be between $0 and $25 each depending on the size of our group. Sign up on the bulletin board across from the kitchen.
Second Sunday of Easter April 3, 2016 Acts 5:27-32 Psalm 150 (UMH 862) Revelation 1:4-8 John 20:19-31 Third Sunday of Easter April 10, 2016 Acts 9:1-6, 7-20 Psalm 30 (UMH 762) Revelation 5:11-14 John 21:1-19
Fourth Sunday of Easter April 17, 2016 Acts 9:36-43 Psalm 23 (UMH 754 or 137) Revelation 7:9-17 John 10:22-30 Fifth Sunday of Easter April 24, 2016 Acts 11:1-18 Psalm 148 (UMH 861) Revelation 21:1-6 John 13:31-35
The scripture readings are provided so that you may read and reflect upon them during the days prior to each worship service.
OUTREACH
“Come one; come all!” At 9:00 a.m. on April 30, we will join together to pack 10,155 meals for our
fellow human beings who live in poverty. Prior to that date, please make donations to members of
the Outreach Committee and note on the memo line of your check “Stop Hunger Now,” so that we
can meet our goal of $2,944.05. At $.29 per meal, any donation ($1, $10, $100, or more) will be
gratefully accepted as we strive to alleviate suffering and to raise up in dignity those struggling to
survive.
FELLOWSHIP HALL CLEAN-UP DAY Mark this date - Saturday, April 16, from 9:00 a.m. to noon - to prepare our church to host Garden Day at Centenary. We need all hands on deck! Cleaning supplies will be provided, but if you have a favorite cleaning supply or tool, please bring it. A chore chart will be provided, but if you have a pet chore, it is all yours.
ORGAN RECITAL We are deeply grateful to everyone who has made contributions to fund the refurbishment and hope you will attend the silver anniversary celebratory recital played by Christopher Houlihan on April 29, at 7:30 p.m.

Here’s the answer:
ODE TO SPRING . . .
"The sun was warm but the wind was chill. You know how it is with an April day.
When the sun is out and the wind is still, You're one month on in the middle of May.
But if you so much as dare to speak, a cloud comes over the sunlit arch, And wind comes off a frozen peak,
And you're two months back in the middle of March." - Robert Frost, Two Tramps in Mud Time, 1926
"If Spring came but once in a century, instead of once a year, or burst forth with the sound of an
earthquake, and not in silence, what wonder and expectation there would be in all hearts to behold the miraculous change! But now the silent succession suggests nothing but necessity. To most men only the cessation of the miracle would be miraculous and the perpetual exercise of God's
power seems less wonderful than its withdrawal would be." - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
"Awake, thou wintry earth -
Your ancient gladness!" - Thomas Blackburn, An Easter Hymn
"Kind hearts are the gardens; kind thoughts are the roots; kind words are the flowers; kind deeds are the fruits."
- English Proverb
William Bradford
WHO SAID IT?
As one small candle may light a thousand, so the light here kindled hath shone unto many, yea in some sort to our whole nation.
