Continued from page 1Indeed Souris does

have much to offer. People who come from far away to attend one of these concerts sees irst hand what it is like here and they often come back. The campground is irst class, there’s a brand new skateboard park and the pool, with it’s beach entry and waterslides for young

children and larger ones for the more adventur-ous, is amazing for fami-lies. With great eateries such as the unique Wood-ire Deli, Sunlower Tea House, Chicken Chef, Mur-phy’s Irish Pub, Tak Lee Chinese Restaurant and Par West Drive In, tourists certainly ind things to ill their days. There are three amazing museums

and of course, the newly designed Swinging Bridge that is a must see. When you factor in the beauti-ful gold course, and park then you have enough to occupy even the most dis-cerning travelers.

It all begins with initia-tive of those who care. It’s not about making mon-ey because every cent earned is kept with Souris

Events so they can bring bigger and better events in the future. For now they are focusing on sell-ing 2300 tickets at $45.00 each for the Chad Brown-lee concert. With Ryan Keown, who in his own right is a star on the Mani-toba country scene as his opening act it should be an event worth seeing. Both of these guys are

popular with their high energy and quality shows, we can’t wait for May 21.

Tickets are available online at ticketweb.ca or can be bought at various outlets such as Souris

Home Hardware, Mur-phy’s Irish Pub, Whitield Drugs, Timeless Trea-sures, Bigway Foods, Pla-za Petals, and in Brandon at Tendercuts and Little Italy Pizza.

Souris Events, striving for success in a small town

The Souris Events committee knows the importance of keeping a small town current and they do this by arrang-ing concerts that attract a lot of attention not only from within the town’s boundaries, but far and wide as well. In 2014 Aaron Pritchett played a wildly successful con-cert at the Souris Complex to a sold out crowd. He is seen here making his mark of the new, state –of-the-art Souris Swinging Bridge.

Civil - Municipal - Structural - Agricultural - Industrial

The fastest growing sector of the global food industry – organic - is the reason for the neat little red ofice based in Miniota, known as OPAM. The Organic Pro-ducers Association of Manitoba, started with an ofice in Virden in the summer of 1988. Twenty-eight years later the business is showing steady growth and staff are very busy this time of year.

A group of people, with a mandate to de-velop certiication for organic producers, was on to something all those years ago. The public’s appetite for organic food has continued to grow, evidenced by organic certiied products in regular grocery stores in regular towns such as Virden, where the Valleyview Consumers Co-op food store carries organic dairy, fruit, veg-etables and processed products. Organic meat products are sometimes available there as well.

Initially, these items were strictly the pur-view of specialty stores, markets and farm-gate businesses, but growing consumer demand has elbowed room on main stream grocery shelves for organic certiied food.

A study in 2013 re-veals that Canada’s or-ganic market grew to $3.7 billion in 2012.... The value of the Canadi-an organic food market has tripled since 2006, far outpacing the growth rate of other agri-food sectors according to the Canadian Organic Trade Organization.

With as many as 58 percent of all Canadians

buying organic products weekly, who is growing these products? Aside from the exotic fruits such as organic bananas, and off-season vegeta-bles, Canadian growers are taking up the chal-lenge.

Laura Telford, with Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Develop-ment, is an organic mar-keting specialist based in Portage La Prairie at the Food Development Centre, and a valuable support for Canada’s or-ganic industry.

OPAM, out of Miniota, is the only certiier with an ofice in Manitoba, and offers professional organic certiication ser-vices to Canadian clients wishing to market prod-ucts in Canada, the US and Europe. They ield a number of inspectors who tour producers and processors, as a means to validate the organic certiication.

Melanie Rivard, OPAM’s Certiication Co-ordinator says, “Organic certiication has gotten slowly busier with inqui-ries year after year. This year, it’s crazy. People are really looking into becoming organic.”

At one point, about ive years ago, OPAM was struggling. Staff was cut and the ofice moved from Virden to Miniota. “We had a tough time when moved. But with the demand for organic so much bigger than the suppliers, we managed to weather the storm,” she says. The ofice also employs Tiffany Priestly, and Linda Rogalsky-Tapp an administrative assis-tant.

At this point, there are only about three certi-ied market gardens in Manitoba. OPAM is the certiier for a grower at Notre Dame De’Lourde.

Whereas it used to be dificult to ind a seed cleaner or a livestock processor, now there are more being certiied ev-ery year, “all driven by demand, on both ends”, says Rivard.

The innovative compa-ny, Canadian Prairie Gar-den Purees, a processing plant at Portage La Prai-rie, is OPAM certiied. The Food Development Centre at Portage, serv-ing as a one-stop shop for research and prod-uct development, is also OPAM certiied.

“It’s a very exciting year for us. Last year we ended up with a net growth of three pro-ducers – a four percent increase. This year we anticipate up to a 10 percent growth,” says Ri-vard.

OPAM takes no part in the marketing aspect of the business, but does guide members toward conferences and work-shops. A potluck meal held at Rapid City this February brought grow-ers together and later on, the yearly ield day gives producers an op-portunity see each oth-er’s businesses at work.

OPAM now serves an expanded area beyond

Manitoba, including Al-berta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario. At the annual meeting held March 12, in Brandon, new board members replaced those stepping off the board of directors. After six years on the board, Glen Elliott from Pipestone and Glen Echert from Wappella stepped off, but remain producers.

David Stronciski from Grandview, and from the Gladstone area, Agabus

Neuschwander (origi-nally from Germany) are both beef producers and have become the new board members. The ex-ecutive saw no changes with John Finnie of Cro-cusview Farm near Ken-ton remaining as presi-dent.

OPAM has made it easier for smaller or intensive producers to become certiied. “For a quarter section or un-der, there is a signii-

cantly reduced rate. Be-fore that, basically if you had a small operation it didn’t make sense,” explains Rivard. “What we’re inding is that a lot of young people are get-ting interested in organ-ics. They may not have as much land to work with as they might like.”

“Some people who haven’t been to a meet-ing in a long time were kind of amazed at where we’ve got to,” she adds.

Organic Producers Association of Manitoba offi ce is based in Miniota, MB.

RANCONA® PINNACLE TAKES SEED TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY TO NEW LEVELS.

Carndu, Saskatchewan306-482-4343

When growers invest in high-quality seed, they need to protect that investment from the three faces of disease pressure – the spectrum in the soil, the level of pressure and the amount of time the seed needs protection. RANCONA® PINNACLE provides that protection by combining two powerful fungicides that provide both contact and systemic activity with RANCONA® microdispersion technology for superior adhesion and coverage.

A HIGHER LEVEL OF DISEASE CONTROL“RANCONA PINNACLE is one of the best products on the market with regards to disease control,” says Steve Manning, Arysta LifeScience Canadian marketing manager for seed treatment products. It gives broad-spectrum disease control in one product, against pests like Fusarium graminearum, Pythium, Rhizoctonia, leaf stripes, smuts, bunts, and root rots.

The superior formulation of RANCONA PINNACLE gives excellent seed coverage with markedly less buildup in seed-treatment equipment, resulting in improved seed emergence, healthier seedlings, and higher yields. In university trials throughout North America, RANCONA PINNACLE has demonstrated higher yields when compared to other leading seed-treatment products.

RANCONA PINNACLE ENDS UP ON YOUR SEED, NOT YOUR EQUIPMENTMicrodispersion technology means more active ingredient ends up on your seed and not your equipment – so you’ll get more out of your seed treatment investment.

“Seed adherence is one of the strong points we really like about RANCONA PINNACLE,” says Art Hollinger of Precision Ag Services Ltd. “It distributes so well over the seed surface, almost instantly. Plus it’s very easy to use, since we don’t have to dilute it with water.”

Whether a grower treats seed on-farm or has treatment done by a retail supplier, RANCONA PINNACLE is the easy-to-use choice to protect investment and yields.

For more information on RANCONA PINNACLE, visit Precision Ag Services Ltd. or call 1-866-761-9397.

An outside view (looking south) of the new water plant in Deloraine. Construction is near completion.

Kent Corkish, Deloraine Water Plant manager, stands in the electrical room of the new water plant.

“We will start com-missioning and running water through the new plant on May 16. Then it’s about a 30 day pe-riod before we will be switching over to the new plant,” said Kent

Corkish water plant manager.

The existing water plant in Deloraine was built in 1962. “Basi-cally very little repair has been needed on the original plant in all those years,” added Corkish.

However, the old plant does not meet the new standards set by the

Province of Manitoba. The new plant comes with a $6.9 million dol-lar price tag; cost shared three ways between the local, provincial and fed-eral governments. The money comes from the “Building Canada Fund.”

“We will still be draw-ing surface water from the reservoir. The new plant will utilize two UF (Ultra Filtration) mem-branes followed by two

Reverse Osmosis mem-branes. The existing plant was a lime soda ash style plant.

“In recent years mem-brane technology has changed (to deal with surface water), so to deal with the current water standards, our engineers (Aecom) decided to go with this technology to remove organics,” said Corkish.

The storage capacity

of the new plant will be double that of the old plant. “The low rates will allow us to make water faster. For exam-ple, the old plant was capable of making 7.2 liters/second while the new one will be capable of between 12-15 liters/second,” added Corkish.

If there is a power out-age, the generator will start up automatically. Also, there will be water

storage for approximate-ly two days.

“We received both the provincial and federal portions of the fund-ing and have made the irst phase payment,” said Gord Weidenhamer, Reeve of Municipality of Deloraine-Winchester.

An Open House is planned once operations are completely turned over from the old to new water plant.

Precision Ag in Carlyle is very excited about the new addition to their fa-cility just south of Carlyle along Hwy 9. The state of the art fertilizer blend-ing plant which has been built has received a lot of attention from the farm-ing community because of its capabilities.

Dan Reaves, Sales Man-ager with Precision Ag, explained, “This is a long term investment for Pre-cision Ag has ever made and we are passionate about it because our cus-tomers are extremely ex-cited about it.”

“The old plant took time to blend and load. In a season farmers have about 20 days to seed and they don’t want to waste those days. This system is unbelievably fast. On the old system, depending on the mix, 30 metric tonnes took about half an hour to load. The other day on our new system we did that in seven minutes.”

“We’re so excited be-cause in the past it took days for someone to get all their fertilizer home and now they can be done in a day.”

The fertilizer plant – a 6,000 metric tonne shed – was built with eight bulk separations along with a micro nutrient hopper and impregnation ability for micronutrients and urease inhibitors.

“We presently handle over 12 different bulk fertilizers,” Reaves ex-plained.

The facility is built en-tirely of concrete, wood, and stainless steel.

“This fertilizer plant was built to last. It will

be here for 80 years, I’ll be long gone and it will still be running,” Reaves smiled. “A bin fertilizer system usually only lasts about 12 years.”

The importance of the fertilizer plant was re-alized as Precision Ag’s number one concern is their customers.

“By using the right components and blend-ing them quickly, we’re selling them time and that’s exciting,” Reaves says. “We invested in this asset as our customers invest with us when they support Precision Ag Ser-vices.”

“I’m excited about this facility, but I’m even more excited that our custom-ers are excited.”

Reaves says that he has been in the agricul-ture industry for the past 26 years and it has only been in the past ive or six years that he’s seen advancements in fertil-izer innovations.

“There have been excit-ing new products coming out that will allow us to provide a better blend for our customers,” Reaves explained. “We take the lab recommendations of soil samples and look at pH, organic matter, min-eralization of the soil, cation exchange capacity, and base saturations to understand the medium [soil] we’re in, so the pur-chase our customer is making is positively im-pacting the soil.”

“There’s a lot more to fertilizer than just read-ing the lab recommenda-tions.”

“Different crops have different use rates of nu-trients and when looking at the soil tests we can decide on the right blend and the right products to

make that blend most ef-fective. Fertilizer repre-sents over 65 percent of a farmers yield response – so it is a huge decision and we recognized that. Quality people and qual-ity fertilizer assets that can deliver speed, time release technology, bal-ance nutrition, and prop-er recommendations will deliver more conidence for the farmer in the big-gest input decision on his farm.”

“There are seven bil-lion people in the world right now and we’re not making more cropland,

so we need to learn how to grow more on what we have. We keep taking nu-trients out of the ground every time we farm it, so people are beginning to use more fertilizer.”

This includes varying fertilizer applications as well, with loating fer-tilizer becoming more popular as advancements were made in urease inhibitors for nitrogen preventing it from am-monia volatilization – the process of the dissolved sample vaporizing – and denitriication – the pro-cess of nitrogen convert-

ing to its gaseous form escaping into the atmo-sphere. Urease inhibi-tors prevent this from happening and has made loating fertilizer a viable means of application to cropland in Saskatch-ewan.

Additionally, advances have been made in dry and liquid fertilizers. This includes such inno-vations as time release technology where the fer-tilizer pearl either bleeds slowly into the ground or layers off like an onion.

This provides continued nutrients for the plant as it grows instead of a con-centrated amount at once during the plants initial growth. Reaves explained that the advances in fer-tilizers have made it inte-gral in ensuring a healthy, high yielding crop.

“One of the biggest overlooked fertilizer de-cisions I see is the focus on commodity fertilizer instead of utilizing the latest and best technol-ogy that is available.

Precision Ag’s fertilizer plant inCarlyle reducing wait times for farmers

Continued from page 7We have tested and

shown a 3-5 bushel in-crease by using the new-est bulk fertilizer versus regular commodity Ni-trogen and Phosphate fertilizers.”

“To properly recom-mend the right fertilizer blend then you need knowledge,” Reaves stated. “To do that we have 11 years of Ag-riculture secondary school in this office, one degree – Bachelor Science of Agriculture, three diplomas in Ag, one Professional Agrol-ogist certification, and one CCA (Certified Crop Advisor).”

Thus, Reaves is con-fident in the abilities of those at Precision Ag in assisting their custom-ers.

The large fertilizer plant was an invest-ment made to ensure farmers have access to high quality and quickly loaded fertilizer.

“Each load is calculat-ed and controlled by a computer, which weighs and distributes the cor-rect mix,” Reaves said.

“It’s then blended and loaded.”

“The R.M. was awe-some to work with. We currently only have one out load, which I think will be enough for now because it goes so quickly, but if we need to, the R.M. has said that we have the option of putting a second out load on the building, so expansion is possible.”

In addition to the ben-efits to customers that the new plant provides to those in the area, Reaves is excited that the new facility has also opened up a new full- time position in Carlyle.

“What we try to do here at Precision Ag is work with the custom-er,” Reaves explained. “So, we look at soil re-ports and use that to create balanced nu-trition, using the best products, which leads to increased yields.”

“For a farmer the biggest component of increased yields is fer-tilizer. Good seed and crop protection are im-portant, but fertilizer is extremely important.”

The fertilizer plant – a 6,000 metric tonne shed – has recently been built at Precision Ag in Carlyle. “The old plant took time to blend and load,” Dan Reaves, Sales Manager, explained. “In a season farmers have about 20 days to seed and they don’t want to waste those days. This system is unbelievably fast. On the old system, depending on the mix, 30 metric tonnes took about half an hour to load. The other day on our new system we did that in seven minutes.”

Suicide. This is a hard subject to talk about. Do you know this face? It doesn’t have to be a male, it could be a fe-male; young or old, rich or poor. Mental health doesn’t discriminate against anyone. It is esti-mated that at some time in their life, 1 in 5 Canadi-ans are directly affected by mental health issues, but they indirectly affect everyone through family, friends, or colleagues.

By joining the Andrew Dunn Walk/Run on May 7, you are making a com-mitment to those living with mental health is-sues, maybe yourself or someone in your fam-ily, or a friend. You are making a commitment to stand up for the pre-cious lives lost by sui-cide and to support their family in their journey through their devastat-ing loss and recovery. By joining our walk, you are making a commitment to show society that you will walk proud and tall and support a cause that is still veiled in misun-derstanding and stigma.

The goal of Andrew-Dunn.org is to become a leader that continues to make a difference in how people perceive mental illness, to help educate and create awareness surrounding mental health issues and sui-cide as well as available

resources and effective treatment. The naming of the organization does not in any way honour a death by suicide, rather the name echoes the per-manent sense of loss and the pain of a precious life lost that is left behind in the wake of a suicide. This inspires our organi-zation members’ efforts to be part of a suicide awareness and preven-tion initiative.

So lace up your walk-ing shoes for the 2nd annual Andrew Dunn Walk Westman Satellite. There is a comfortable sense of community and support at our event.

We want people to work towards a successful recovery, connect with and support each other, and to know they are not alone.

The Dunn walk is a family friendly event for persons of all ages. There is a 5 km walk and Fun Run on a designated route, or cycling enthu-siasts can join in on the event by cycling the dis-tance. After the walk stay for lunch, silent auc-tion and event awards. Join us Saturday, May 7, at the Souris Curling Club, 9:30 a.m. registra-tion, 11:00 a.m. walk. See you there!

EVEREST® GBX CONTAINS EVEREST® 2.0. SAFE, RELENTLESS CONTROL THAT BEST FITS YOUR FIELDS.

EVEREST® GBX contains EVEREST® 2.0 in addition to uroxypyr, the same ingredient in AttainTM, providing exceptional control and economic value for managing troublesome grass and broadleaf weeds.

RELENTLESS CONTROL & CROP SAFETY: BEST OF BOTH WORLDSIn University of Saskatchewan eld trials, researchers found that regardless of conditions, EVEREST 2.0 delivered Flush after ush™ control of wild oats and green foxtail with no risk of injury symptoms. The crop was able to grow without adverse eects, thanks to the super selectivity of EVEREST 2.0 on all varieties of spring and durum wheat.

“We like that EVEREST 2.0 and EVEREST GBX give customers a wide application window that lets you spray at your earliest convenience, regardless of weather conditions,” says Art Hollinger of Precision Ag Services Ltd. “Spraying early provides the best weed control, and with EVEREST 2.0, young wheat has the best chance to become established and reach its top potential yield. And, at the same time, if the rains come and the crop advances, EVEREST 2.0 and EVEREST GBX are still safe to apply.”

SUPERIOR FORMULATION AND CONVENIENCE“EVEREST 2.0 is an advanced, highly concentrated liquid formulation,” says Trent McCrea, Arysta LifeScience marketing manager, herbicides. “It’s a user-friendly, no-hassle product that wheat growers can rely on, with exceptional convenience and exibility.” EVEREST GBX contains one 2-litre bottle of EVEREST 2.0 along with two bottles of GBX, and will treat 80 -100 acres.

CHOOSE THE BEST SOLUTION FOR YOUR WEED SPECTRUM AND PRESSUREWhen you add the recent discovery of glyphosate-resistant kochia in Southern Alberta to the existing challenges of Group 1 wild oat resistance and Group 2 cleaver, kochia and chickweed resistance, it’s even more important to have choices that can best t your weed spectrum and don’t break the bank. “EVEREST GBX can be customized in terms of rate and tank-mix partners, based on individual weed spectrum and pressure,” says McCrea. “EVEREST GBX tank-mixed with MCPA, 2,4-D or DEPLOY® gets more than 50 broadleaf weeds, including the most critical resistant weeds in Western Canada. And all at a better price than tank-mixing EVEREST 2.0 with a comparable broadleaf option.”

Peatrah Harkness (the mother of Nuala) said, “In Canada the pageants are really nat-ural and not a lot of glitz like what you would see on TV... There are a lot of negative opinions about pageants, which we are trying to get the word out about that it is very positive.”

Nuala currently holds the title of National Ca-nadian Baby Miss Mani-toba with the National Canadian Girl Pageants. Harkness explained, “We started going to Regina for them and as we got a little more fa-miliar with the system we learned of a schol-arship program; it’s the only one in Canada, so it

is not a beauty pageant. It started in B.C. and the founder has brought it across Canada. It isn’t working out very well in Manitoba, there are very few participants.”

In July Nuala is going to Nationals; at the pag-eant, there is $24,000 worth of scholarships that will be awarded. The Nationals is a four-day long event that is being held at the West Edmonton Mall. “She has been provided tools to help her fundraise and seek sponsors to help cover her costs of this opportunity. As one of the few Manitoba participants, it would be great to have our community supporting her along this journey.”

Harkness continued, “As part of her obliga-tions she is requested to raise money for the Manitoba Children’s Hospital. Nuala is also building necessities kits for local homeless, as the shelter beds are no longer available at the end of the month. Nuala will be making as many appearances at local events such as we can find.”Nuala Duncan Harkness wearing her National Canadian

For the fourth time in nine years, Virden Ford is to be recognized as a 2015 President’s Award Diamond Club winner by Ford Motor Company of Canada, Limited. It’s Ford of Canada’s highest hon-our, presented annually to dealerships who dem-onstrate outstanding achievement in sales and customer satisfaction.

“Our success is driven by our strong customer

relationships and our ties to the Virden com-munity,” says Virden Ford general manager, Darin Banga. “We’re proud to earn the Presi-dent’s Award Diamond Club distinction because it shows that our cus-tomers appreciate our team’s commitment to service excellence.”

The Ford dealership in Virden was established many decades ago. Nine years ago, Darin Banga saw something that ex-cited him here, which drew him from Carlyle,

Saskatchewan to Virden, to take over the dealer-ship. “We bought the dealership in January 2007,” he says.

Business grew. In 2011 there were renovations to the dealership. Having set the bar, Banga says the challenge has been to live up to expectations. “We grew a business in the irst couple of years by doubling and tripling it. And then trying to keep that level of achievement and still maintain quality customer service.”

Banga has assembled

a team of 22 employees for just that purpose – to provide sales, service, parts and auto body ser-vice.

“It’s all about the cus-tomer and having the right people in the right place,” states Banga. “Surrounding myself with good people, good quality staff at Virden Ford. The rest takes care of itself.”

When asked about his personal motto, he says, “Don’t give someone something to do if you’re not prepared to do it

yourself, I’m very much a hands on leader.”

Ford of Canada intro-duced The President’s Award in 2000. Dealers become eligible through excellence in dealership operations and excep-tional customer feedback through survey respons-es related to their sales and service satisfaction and overall dealership experience.

The Virden Ford team has won the award four times in the last nine years and remains dedi-cated to Virden and sur-

rounding communities, supporting a number of different local chari-ties and causes through dealer-run fundraising initiatives. Past recipi-ents of fundraising ef-forts include the Virden Junior A Oil Capitals of the Manitoba Junior Hockey Leagues, Wallace and District Fire Depart-ments, the annual Virden Indoor Rodeo and Fort La Bosse School Division. Virden Ford continues to support its commu-nity and customers into 2016.
