The Dawson Creek Junior Canucks contin-ued their cold start to 2016 on Saturday with a 3-0 loss on the road to the Sexsmith Vipers.
The Jr. C’s racked up 21 penalty minutes and couldn’t convert on the 10 man advantage chances the Vipers handed them throughout the game.
With both teams short-handed far too often through 60-minutes, Junior Canucks backup goalie Nathan Anderson was forced to make 43 saves in the loss.
Tyler Boe made 24 saves to earn the shut-out in the Sexsmith net.
Josh Desgange, Calvin Sanders and Andrew Klatt scored for the Vipers.
It’ll be a quick turnaround for the Junior Canucks, as they will hit the ice against the Beaverlodge Blades on Wednesday at Memo-rial Arena before a three game road trip from Jan. 22-26.

While there's a ladder inside each windmill, rappelling down the outside might be necessary in the event of a fi re or medical emergency.
The wind turbines on Bear Mountain in Dawson Creek can be turned on, off and rotated remotely from anwhere with an
Internet connection. But sometimes, someone has to go up top. A group of Northern Lights College students trained on the wind-
mills Friday, along with crews from AltaGas and Enercon, the German company that built the interior components of the 30-plus
wind turbines. For some, it was their fi rst time making
the 255-foot climb to the top. Photos by Jonny Wakefi eld
Dylan Tuck (left) and Elijah Mecham prepare to climb Turbine 13 at Bear Mountain. While the two had climbed the training tower at the Dawson Creek NLC campus—a 120-foot structure—Friday was the fi rst time they'd been up the real thing. They clamped on to the ladder using what's called a Bornack slider for fall protection. They originally hail from Bella Coola.
Each turbine contains a single ladder that goes straight to the top.

Different team, same result. Karsten Sturmay and teammate Tristan Steinke
are Alberta Junior Curling Champions once again in 2016 after defeating the Jeremy Harty Rink 7-4 in the final at the Wainwright Curling Club on Jan. 6. Their route to victory, however, wasn’t without obstacles this season.
They had to replace their two front-end players that led them to the 2015 Canadian Championships
and also got a new coach. “Last year Karsten and I were the young guys on
the team, with two guys in their last year and [had] played front end their entire careers, they brought a lot of experience to the table,” Steinke, the 20-year-old Dawson Creek native said.
“I can’t say enough about how hard Caleb and Chris worked and how much they bought into ev-erything…this year our team was based out of the University of Alberta, we had a different coach and a different style of coaching and it took some adjust-ment. That put some more onus on the communi-

High Quality solid wood bedroom furniture for kids.100% Canadian made. Built right...here in the Peace.
Quality Beds For Kids is a small, family owned and operated business that started in Chetwynd, B.C. in 1994. It all started with one set of bunk beds for our own kids. Eventually, our friends and neighbours had to have beds just like ours and slowly, it turned into the business we have today. Over the years, improvements have been made to the original design to enhance strength and durability, but they are still very much as the original beds were in 1994. Today in 2010, we still consider our beds to be among the safest most durable beds on the planet, with over a dozen models to choose from as well as dressers, wardrobes, cedar lined chests, potato bins etc, all made from 100% solid wood. The predominant wood species of choice for our products has been with utilization of lodge-pole pine from our devastated pine forests. We harvest only the standing, dead, pine-beetle infested trees, which exhibit a strikingly beautiful blue-gray, denim appearance in the fi nished product. Additionally, in our forest stewardship program, we apply responsible, selective harvesting techniques that leaves minimal impact on the surrounding forest species and wildlife, making “Quality Beds For Kids” truly, one of the very few “Environmentally Friendly”, value added businesses in the country. It has been our commitment from the start to provide a superior product, produced locally and utilizing our own native species of wood. The result is a product that is priced very competitively with the typical, “Assembly Required”, or “Sturdy Wood Product” mail-order and department store stuff, and the pay-off in quality is worth every penny! With the exception of the wood fi nish, every bed frame we produce comes with a Lifetime guarantee against material defects. To put it simply, if it breaks, we will fi x it!

Local NewsDawson Creek native Tristan Steinke is a two-time Alberta junior curling champ after another title win on Jan. 6 cation that needed to happen amongst the team.”
Along with Sturmay and Steinke, new additions Christopher Kennedy, lead Caleb Boorse and coach Jeff Hoffart will represent Alberta at the 2016 Canadian Junior Curl-ing Championships starting Jan. 23 in Strat-ford, Ont.
With the new faces, the Alberta defend-ing champions weren’t even the favourite heading into the 2016 junior champion-ships. That honour was left to a rink led by Jeremy Harty, whose team hadn’t lost this
season before the championships. After a 5-2 finish in round robin, Steinke
and Team Sturmay recognized that they hadn’t played their best. He said that quick-ly changed when the bonspiel was on the line.
“We’re happy with the way things ended up. Our team has prided itself this year on trying to just get better as an event wears on and get better as the year went on. Pro-vincials went like that as well,” Steinke said.
“It wasn’t that we started out flat, we [just] weren’t playing to our full potential
and we really did just get better and better as it went on. The two playoff games that
we played were the best two games we’ve Continued on Page 11

Familyliteracy tips
for any day!Spending just 15 minutes a day doing literacy activities
will improve your children’s skills dramatically, as well as your own. Here are some fun and easy daily activities from ABC Life Literacy Canada:
1. Number Walk: As you put on your shoes, choose something you want to count during your walk. It could be dogs, trees, stop signs, cars — anything you want! On your walk, count how many you can fi nd.
2. Word Wall: Learn one new word every day. Display them by creating a family word wall with Bristol board and
markers. Can you make a sentence with the words on your wall?3. A Course of Course: Build an obstacle course through
your family room, and draw a map of how to go through it from beginning to end.
4. Have a Book-nic: Organize an indoor picnic with books and tasty treats. Choose a theme – try honey - fl avoured cereal and read Winnie the Pooh.
5. Game On: Start family board game night and play a dif-ferent game each week. Family members can take turns reading instructions and game cards as well as keeping score.

simple sugars with your meals).✔ Stimulate saliva fl ow by eating
lemon-fl avored hard candy or chewing sugar-free gum.
✔ Use artifi cial saliva spray or swabsticks as needed (ex. Moi-Stir™).
✔ If you have thick saliva, drink hot or acidic beverages (lemon tea, lemonade, unsweetened citrus fruit or pineapple juice) or eat ice pops.
✔ If milk causes you problem, drink skim milk. Rinse your mouth with water after drinking milk.

NUTRITIONAL APPROACHDry mouth is an unpleasant
symptom often caused by certain drugs. You can take several measures to relieve and decrease your discomfort:✔ Increase your liquid intake by
always keeping on hand a bottle of your favorite beverage.
✔ Choose preferably soft moist foods. Adding sauce. cooking juices. melted margarine or butter. or other liquids (milk. fruit or vegetable juice. etc.) may help. Use dressing, sour cream or mayonnaise to make foods more creamy.
✔ Moisten your mouth frequently during the day by eating ice chips or spraying water in your mouth with a spray bottle.
✔ Clean and freshen your mouth several times a day with a mouthwash made with 1 teaspoon (5 ml) sodium bicarbonate and 2 cups of water.
✔ Have a sip of liquid (soup or a beverage) with every bite of food or soak your food in it to make it easier to chew and swallow.
✔ Protect your lips with a lip balm.

played this year as a team by far and came at a good time.”
It was the Harty rink that handed team Sturmay one of two losses in the round rob-in and Steinke said it was nice to get some redemption in the final.
“Really the second last game of the round robin where we played team Jeremy Harty and lost to them… are coach talked to us after the game and said ‘we played re-ally well that game, we should be proud of the way we played.’,” he said.
“The semi-final was definitely the best game we’ve played this year. As we started playing better the confidence started going and then in the final we played really well again.”
Steinke added that they can’t focus on results or who they might play in the Ca-nadian championships, instead they need to look at the process it will take to become champions.
“You set goals at the start of the year and in the off-season to motivate yourself and your team to train hard and do all the things you want to do to prepare for the season,” he said.
“We talked before the season and we said that once we get into a competition we try to not think too much about the final results, about what’s going to happen. It’s going to look after itself if we focus on the process. It’s cliché but taking it one shot at a time and trying to play our best.”

Sturmay finished out of the medals last year after losing in the championship round tie-breaker game against Quebec. Team Alberta will get another shot at Manitoba, who is in their pool this time around and dealt them a crucial blow in the championship round last year.
“Karsten and I, I think we learned a lot last year through our experience, just having been there once
through. We know a bit of what to expect, there’s a lot to this event,” Steinke said.
“It’s very highly officiated and there’s lots that goes on in between draws... I think [the experience] keeps the stress level down. You go in, the fear of the unknown isn't as much there. I think that’ll help us and obviously sharing that with our teammates.”

Local NewsHard work pays off for Penguins
DAWSON CREEK- The DCSS senior girls basketball team screamed with elation on Saturday night and rightfully so after their first tournament win this season.
A big first tournament win— on their home court, after three games on Saturday, concluded with a 50-46 victory over the Hines Creek Tigers and coaches Jenny and Troy Erickson said it was a credit to the girls sticking to the game plan.
“They executed the offense and they played really tough defense. They just overall played a good game,” Jenny said. “We like to play a fast, full court running game and that’s what we are constantly encouraging them to do and they have done that the whole weekend which we are happy about.”
It had been four tries this season before the Penguins got it right and three years in the making as a team made up of mostly grade 12 players is looking for a rare berth in pro-vincials later this year.
Somer Haycock led the charge for DCSS with 20 points.
The Snowball tournament at DCSS hasn’t been an annual event in some time, but was brought back last season with just a 6-team event and grew this year to an 11-team tour-nament.
On the boys side in the final, NPSS easily defeated the Hines Creek Tigers 87-63 to capture the tournament victory.
