She apparently wanted the girl to play with her own child. The two mothers agreed and the child was taken to Maila. According to Ms Khoza, they agreed that her aunt, Mulaudzi, would bring the child back home at the end of that month, but this did not happen. She said that she phoned her aunt and asked her when she planned on bringing the girl back home. Khoza said that her aunt told her that the child would be returned in October. At the end of October, Ms Khoza again requested that Katlego be brought to Elim, but this did not happen. “Shortly after this, I was shocked when a home- based caregiver from Maila village contacted me and told me my daughter had sustained serious injuries,” the blind mother said. She said she and her brother then went to Mai- la village where they found Katlego with serious wounds to her head and leg. “The wounds looked like flesh had been cut off her. The wound on her leg was stuffed with muti that was black in colour, and banana peels. I don’t know why,” she said. According to Ms Khoza, the skull of her young girl was visible and there were worms in the wound. She said when she questioned her aunt about what had occurred, her aunt gave three versions of what had happened. “First she said that Katlego had fallen from a pile of wood and been hurt. Then she said she had fallen off some bricks that were stacked up. Then she said she (Mulaudzi) had seen a snake and when she wanted to kill it with a brick, she missed and hit Katlego on the head by mistake. She further said Katlego was recovering slowly in hospital, but would need to have skin transplants to heal com- pletely and was tranferred from Elim hospital to Garankuwa.” Const Irene Radzilani from the Makhado SAPS said Mulaudzi had been arrested and appeared in the Tshitale Magistrate’s Court on 4 December last year. “The case was postponed to February 19 for a formal bail application and the suspect remains in custody,” Radzilani said. 9 772409 678005 19 ISSN 2409-6784 “Treat us like humans” - page 2 Mysterious fire destroys house in Golgotha - page 13 Dumped baby healthy and happy - page 3 Kurhuleni community not accepting chief - page 14 23 January 2015 Year 25 Vol: 19 R3,00 VAT Inc. The police arrested a 41-year-old sus-pect, Ivy Mulaudzi of Maila, after she

had allegedly attempted to kill a two-year-old girl at Ha-Maila.

The woman’s reasons for allegedly com-mitting such an awful act are not yet clear, but

police investigations continue. The incident happened last year at Ha-Maila. In September, Mulaudzi allegedly requested the blind mother of the child, Veronica Khoza, to take the girl, Katlego (2), from Mufeba to her house at Maila.

The path is the shortest to Maniini village, but residents have named it the shortcut to death.

This comes after two people were re-cently killed passing through the bushes next to the Thohoyandou Stadium.

One man was killed towards the end of last year in what is believed to be a robbery gone wrong. The latest victim was killed on Tuesday afternoon in the same bushes.

His identity and age are not yet known and several stab wounds were visible on his bloodied body. His shirt was soaked in blood and he seemed to have been stabbed some metres away from where his body was found.

A herder who tends cattle in the bushes said there had been many acts of robbery in those bushes and that there were gangs of criminals who lay in wait for potential victims to mug.

“This is a very dangerous area. I am

working here because I have no option. Every day I see these guys hiding in the bushes, and I just feel that they will one day come for me. Last year, a man was killed here and this path has become very dangerous to pass alone. People are forced to use it as they do not have money to board taxis,” he said.

Mr Solomon Mavhetha, a long-time resident of Maniini, said the only way people would be safe would be when the municipality demarcated the area for residen-tial sites.

"We are not safe here. This is fertile ground for thugs to hide in these bushes. If it could be demarcated for sites, there would be no more criminals here," said Mavhetha.

Thohoyandou police spokes-person Avhafarei Tshiovhe said

they had opened a murder case. “The victim is unknown and, for now, no one knows how he was killed or how he ended up there, but our investigations will hope-fully reveal the circumstances of his death and the killers,” she said.

She urged those with information to please furnish it to the police, so that they would be able to crack the case.

Malamulele shutdown resumesAs the total shutdown enters its second week in Malamulele, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Lim-popo has called on the authorities both at provincial and national level to intervene as prescribed by the country's constitution.

Malamulele has been a scene of protests for some time, some of which were violent and led to the damaging of properties. The residents want their own municipality, separate from Thulamela.

Last week, residents embarked on a stay away which ended on Friday. At a meeting held on Sunday to ass-es the impact of the week-long stay away, residents decided to continue for another week with no movement in and out of Malamulele. This also meant that pupils did not go to school as the schooling calender entered its second week.

The protesters say they will not stop until Cooperative Governance Minister Pravin Gordhan responds positively to their demands. If this does not happen, they will be march-ing to the Union Buildings.

The area has been characterised by blockades at all entry points to the township. Those trying to take their children to outside schools and those trying to go to work are turned back at entry and exit points.

In the light of the above, the DA in Limpopo has come up with a proposal that they hope will save the situation. Mr Jacques Smalle, the pro-

vincial leader, said they would write to Minister Gordhan and Coghsta Limpopo this week to advocate that the government review the situation and consider providing the Malamu-lele area with a regional offi ce of the Thulamela Municipality.

According to the party, this will, in the meantime, ensure access to service delivery and stabilise the life-threatening and volatile situa-tion that has since crippled business activities.

"The DA believes that a regional municipal office will bring about calm and stability in the area while the demarcation board is still reviewing the people’s request of a munici-pality. The DA’s concerns include mainly the disruption of schooling and economic activities. The DA will also advocate for a debate in the provincial legislature on the provision of a regional municipal offi ce in the area before Limpopo is faced with yet another series of ugly service delivery unrest," said Smalle.

Smalle, who is a member of the education portfolio, also urged the community in Malamulele to release the children, so that they can continue with their normal schooling. “We can-not stand and allow the Malamulele area to go up in fl ames in this situation while our constitution has a provision towards a peaceful solution; hence we believe that political will could come in handy in resolving this problem,” concluded Smalle.

Somali nationals in Vhembe are crying foul, saying they are being targeted for attacks and killed for no apparent reason. Last weekend, a Somali businessman was killed in cold blood, while 22 Somalian business people have been attacked since last year in villages around Vhembe, where they run their shops.

The main reason for the attacks is believed to be robbery.

Businessman Cabdulahi Maha-mud Shumaqul (44) and a boy were asleep in his shop at Makonde. At around 02:00 on Saturday, three men allegedly arrived with an assortment of weapons.

They tried to gain entry through the windows, but could not get in through the burglar proofi ng. They then climbed onto the roof and opened a hole in order to gain entry.

The criminals demanded money and took R700 and some airtime vouchers. They then demanded more money, which they did not get, and then dragged Shumaqul and the boy to a nearby sports fi eld, where they killed the businessman.

Abdi Mhamed, who witnessed the ordeal, said his uncle was dragged all the way to the sportsfi eld like a sledge. "I have never seen such cru-elty. I was made to watch while they stabbed my uncle and cut him as if they were killing a cow. He died a painful death and I was spared as they said must I help my uncle before they left," he said.

Somalian community spokesperson Osman Abdi Wil Mohamed said they

are worried about the escalation of attacks on their members.

"What have we done wrong that warrants the attacks coming from left and right and everywhere? While this country was fi ghting for freedom, we helped comrades in our home coun-try, but when we come here, we are harrassed."

The Thohoyandou police spokes-person confi rmed the incident and said that they had opened a murder docket. “No arrests have been made so far, but investigations are continu-ing,” she said.

* In December, businessman Ma-hamud Ahmed (40) was attacked and left at his shop in Tshaulu. He was hit with a blunt object, which left one of his eyes blind and he is also suffering from memory loss. He has not yet fully recovered from the attack.

Stern warning to people who neglect childrenChief Enos Mukhuba, one of the traditional leaders at Khubvi outside Thohoyandou, has sent a stern warning to people who neglect their children that they will not be shown any mercy.

Mukhuba's warning comes amidst the abduction of a fi ve-year-old girl after her parents allegedly failed to pay the man who worked for them.

The incident happened in Khubvi last year but was kept under wraps until community leaders were tipped off by concerned members of the community. The girl, who cannot be named, was supposed to have started Grade R this year but could not.

Ch ie f Mukhuba said he heard about the incident last year and had been trying to persuade the father of the child to pay the amount that he owed the man for the girl's release. "What I know about the incident is that the father em-ployed a Zimbabwean guy to make bricks for him but failed to pay his salary of R1 400. He kept promising the guy his money and the case was also brought to us to adjudicate, but he still did not pay. The matter was then taken to the police, but he still refused to pay.

The last time, it is said, the man told the guy to go and fetch the money from his wife at home, but when the man arrived, he did not fi nd any money and that was when he took the child away," he said.

Mukhuba said they condemned the use of children as payment of debts. "How can a father keep quiet while his daughter has been missing for eight months? We will deal decisively with such parents who do not care," he said.

He thanked the local structures who, on hearing about the child 's ordeal, collected money and sent a man to fetch the child from Zimbabwe.

Ms Annah Netshishivhe, chairperson

of the local Sanco at Khubvi, said the whole episode had been kept away from them, but when they learnt about it, they sprang into action. "We called all struc-tures in the village for a meeting and it was decided that the matter be taken as urgent. We started to collect the cash and, luckily, one of our members gave us R3 000, and our delegate came back with the child after two days," she said.

She said they were worried because the baby came back with so many bruises all over her body, and she had to be taken to the premises of the Thohoyandou Victim Empowerment Programme, who immedi-ately put her in their trauma centre.

Chief Enos Mukhuba.

Baby gets dumped on New Year’s Eve in street in front of Memorial HospitalA baby girl was found abandoned in Hospital Street, near the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital, on New Year’s Eve.

The little baby, who was approximately one month old, was found at about 14:00 by members of the community. The Makhado SAPS were alerted and the baby was taken to the police station before being taken to the hospital. Nurses at the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital have confi rmed that the baby is healthy and being taken good care of. When Limpopo Mirror visited the hospital last Thursday, the baby was well fed and looked healthy. She was playing on the hospital bed like nothing had happened

The deputy senior communications manager of Louis Trichardt Memorial hospital, Mr Kutelani Sigidi, said the baby was brought to the hospital three weeks ago. “We are presently taking care of the baby and she is fi ne, beautiful and healthy.”

Sigidi said that they were waiting to hear from the social worker, because there were families who were willing to adopt the baby. “The outcome (of the report) will also determine if the child will be transferred to a place of safety,” he said.

Sigidi thanked the hospital staff, police offi cers, social workers and community members who contributed towards the safety of the special baby.

“It is our joint duty to make sure that children receive the best love, care and affection, because God has brought them into this world for special reasons. We would like to convey our gratitude to everyone who contributed to save the life of this beautiful baby.”

Const Irene Radzilani of Makhado SAPS said it was an unacceptable thing to abandon an innocent baby. She added that Gift, as the baby is called, was one of the luckiest babies on earth because she was discovered alive. “Some parents resort to strangling their newborn babies before throwing them in dustbins, toilets or bushes,” she said.

The police have subsequently opened a case of child abandonment. “The investigations are still continuing,” said Radzilani. She also appealed to members of the community to assist the police in tracing the mother of the abandoned child. Anyone with information can contact W/O Enos Radzi-lani at 071 482 8671 or Const Irene Radzilani at 0825658233.

Many possibilities for GMA modelsA local modelling agency, Glamour Mod-elling Agency (GMA), is optimistic about the possibilities for the coming year. This agency, which was started 10 months ago, has already recruited 20 models, some of whom managed to performed very well at beauty pageants.

The agency’s founder, Mr Lawrence ‘Lolo’ Lulama, said some of the agency’s models had won various accolades, including Ms Hazel Siwadawada, who was crowned fi rst princess during the Miss Makhado beauty pageant which was held last year in December.

The GMA was initially launched with the aim of keeping young people away from alcohol and substance abuse as well as to try and prevent teenage pregnancies. “All young boys and girls who desire to explore the world of modelling are welcome to join,” said Mr Lulama. “I believe that if you do what you love, the rest will follow,” he added.

The agency faces several challenges, such as finding a decent place for training and workshops.

Thus far, they have been using Makhado Comprehensive School’s premises for training. They are also spending money on photog-raphers for photo-shoot rehearsals. “We are seeking sponsorships. If we can fi nd our own place and a professional camera, it will be easy for us to develop the young people in the region,” he said.

Next Saturday (January 31) some of this agency’s models will be in Polokwane, audi-tioning for a fashion show.

Mr Lulama can be contacted at 072 854 5106 or through the Facebook page: Glamour modelling agency and Event management.

Tshifhiwa Nevhutalu (18) is one of the young boys who has recently joined the agency.

The 17-year-old Thembi Tlou has just joined the agency and believes that it will take her far.

Paul Schlehlein of the Trinity Baptist Church.

Maulana Abu Bakr Akoo.

Louis Trichardt will play host to a unique debate surrounding the theme Did Jesus claim to be God? on 7 February.

Residents are invited to join the conversation as a Muslim and a Christian discuss their views on the nature of Jesus Christ. Was Jesus a mere prophet, as Muslims believe, or is He God in the flesh, as believed by Christians? In order to answer this question, Maulana Abu Bakr Akoo and Pastor Paul Schlehlein will be debating the claims of Jesus from the Bible.

This promises a debate not to be missed, with renowned linguist and Bible scholar professor emeritus Koos Van Rooy of the Reformed Church acting as moderator. The debate is scheduled for two hours, followed by 30 minutes of questions from the audience.

“We welcome those of all faiths to this historic event. Bring your friends and join us afterwards for refreshments,” invite the organisers.

The debate will start at 17:00 in the Ferdie Beyers Hall and for more information, phone Past Paul at Tel 084 451 7309.

The 23-year-old Wome Eduako will appear in the Waterval Magistrate's Court today in connection with a murder case which took place at Rivoni village, outside Elim.

Eduako, who originally came from Ethiopia and owned a spaza shop in the village, allegedly stabbed Mpho Gift Sithole (22) in the heart with a knife. He ap-peared in court on 6 December last year, and the case was post-

poned to 23 January (today) to give the prosecution enough time to secure the post mortem results.

This case made headlines and caused a lot of unrest in the vil-lage, where community members wanted to chase all Ethiopian businessmen out of the village. The Njhakanjhaka Traditional Authority intervened, however, and requested the community to refrain from any acts of violence and let the law deal with the

matter.Sithole had reportedly gone to

the accused to collect his money when the argument started be-tween them. He had reportedly sold the accused a laptop com-puter some two months before, but Eduako allegedly refused to hand him the outstanding money.

Eduako, who had no perma-nent property in the village, was only renting a space where he ran the spaza shop.

SA businessman receives bail in ZimA South African businessman operating a safari farm out-side Beit Bridge in Zimbabwe, Mr Fredrick Wilhelm August Lutzkie, got a reprieve last week after he was temporar-ily given back his passport to enable him to travel to South Africa for medical assistance.

Lutzkie (52) was jailed for an effective three-and-a half years last year after crashing his helicopter in Zimbabwe and burying the wreckage. This was after he had illegally entered the country without the permission of the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ).

He then contested the sen-tence and was subsequently released on US$25 000 bail, pending his appeal against the sentence.

Lutzkie, who was ordered to surrender his passport as part of the bail conditions, got his passport back after an applica-tion by his lawyer, Mr Thabani Mpofu, who argued that his client wanted to visit his doctor in South Africa.

The travel document was then released to Lutzkie until 20

February to enable him to travel to South Africa for treatment.

Lutzkie pleaded guilty last June to 14 counts of contra-vening the Civil Aviation and Immigration Acts and he was sentenced to seven years in jail by a Harare magistrate. Three-and-a-half years of the sentence were conditionally suspended.

It was testified that between 1 and 28 February last year, Lutzkie flew his helicopter from South Africa to Doddieburn

Safari Farm outside Beit Bridge without permission from the CAAZ. On 5 May, he crashed the helicopter shortly after take-off from his farm. He then secretly dug a pit with an exca-vator and buried the wreckage of the helicopter on the farm.

Some villagers spotted the wreckage and they informed the police, who investigated. Lutzkie handed himself over to the police a few weeks later.

Ms Iris Magoro says that she fails to understand why the municipality cannot fix the sewage problem.

Not an end to Tskhikota sewage problemsThe eight-year battle for seven households from Tshikota to get their sewage problems sorted out still continues and it seems to be far from coming to an end with a clear resolution.

This was brought to Limpopo Mirror's attention last week by concerned families who claim that municipal workers came and only fixed one part of the problem instead of addressing the whole sewerage system in the area.

“They successfully fixed the sewage problem at the back of my house and no faecal water can be seen storming onto the back of my house any longer,” Ms Iris Mogoro, of house number 2025, acknowledged. “Now the prob-lem is that they have dug a deep trench which almost encircles my yard. The trench is always open, smelly, and there are a lot of mosquitoes which invade my yard and finally find their way into my house.”

The trench was dug around

November last year, after Limpo-po Mirror carried the first story.

Magoro added that her young-est daughter, aged 14, had gone to bed three days before on an empty stomach and still could not take breakfast the following morning after complaining about the stench from the trench. “She said the smell of faeces assailed her nose and killed her appetite,” she complained. “I am her mother and it pains me when my child cannot eat. She needs nutrition, so that she can focus on her school work.”

Half of Magoro's yard is mat-ted with a carpet of green lawn, which could be ideal for resting on during sunny days. However, the family is afraid of mowing the lawn and using it for lounging on, lest they catch a disease as the grass might have been con-taminated with possible viruses and germs from the open sewer.

On Friday and Saturday, Lim-popo Mirror visited Tshikota and

noticed that there were also two sewer streams which continued to course in the open on the other side of the street, emptying into the hazardous trench. Two chil-dren, who looked no more than five years of age, were playing near the trench, eating mangos.

An electrical line to Magoro's house and another pipe run inside the open trench, always drenched with fresh sewage.

“I have lost hope already, but the pain in me and the faeces which surrounds us push me to complain,” Magoro said.

When contacted for comment, the Vhembe District Municipal-ity's media liaison officer, Mr Moses Shibambu, said that he thought the problem had already been addressed when he had first brought the matter to the officials' attention in November last year. However, he then promised that the workers would visit the af-fected area immediately.

Zim government takes over deportee centre

Radio journalist injured during installation of new “chief”

The Zimbabwean government has taken over the operations at the Inter-national Organisation for Migration (IOM) reception and support centre in Beit Bridge.

The centre, which was established in 2006, handles deportees brought into Zimbabwe from South Africa through Beit Bridge Border Post.

The IOM programme manager, Mr Sam Grundy, told Limpopo Mirror that his or-ganisation had handed over the operations at the Beit Bridge centre on 1 January. The centre provides humanitarian assistance to Zimbabweans deported from South Afri-

ca. He added that the department of social services was now handling the operations at Beit Bridge.

Deportees receive food, temporary shel-ter and transport to travel to their homes upon deportation. “We are confident that the Zimbabwean government will be able to continue assisting deportees just like we used to do in the past nine years,” he said.

Grundy said the IOM had been working on the transitional process since May last year. “We will continue to maintain our presence at the reception and support centre during the first quarter of 2015, providing technical assistance on irregular

migration management to the government of Zimbabwe, “he said.

“The humanitarian assistance pro-grammes are intended to provide support to uphold the safety and dignity of irreg-ular migrants. IOM programmes include working with the Zimbabwean govern-ment to identify and develop sustainable strategies to overcome irregular migration challenges and enhancing opportunities for positive development,” he added.

The IOM has, since its inception, as-sisted a total of 385,483 deportees from South Africa at the Beit Bridge centre and can handle 600 people at any given time.

A well-known local journalist from Univen Radio, Justice Masekane (30), is still nursing the wounds he allegedly sustained when members of the South African Police Services shot at him when they were trying to disperse a crowd.

Justice explained that the shots were fired during the installation ceremony of Chief Ndavhelesi Kha-ridzha at Kurhuleni on 20 December. He interviewed some members of the community after learning that they were not happy with the new chief.

Masekana claims that the police shot at him without any prior warning. He was hit on the arms, in his face and on his stomach. Masekane said he had opened cases of attempted murder against the three police officers who allegedly shot at him, but he had not been not informed of any court dates.

He laid charges on 20 December at the Levubu SAPS. “I know these officers very well and I don’t understand why action is not taken against them,” said Masekane. He expressed the hope that justice would one day prevail.

Masekane said the incident had left him traumatised and there was no way that he would leave the matter as it stood. He intends to sue the police. “We are law-abiding citizens. These police do as they wish and shoot at me.” Masekane said that at first he was overwhelmed with fear, but members of the community inter-vened and advised him to tell his story to the world.

In response, W/O Solly Mukhola of the Levubu SAPS said he would investigate the case. “If there is any wrongdoing, the law will take its course,” he promised.

Journalist Justice Masekane reckons the police member who allegedly shot him should face the consequences of their actions.

Justice Masekane’s bruises can be clearly seen shortly after the incident.

A 50-year-old poet and playwright, Johnny Malunghisa, has taken spoken poetry to an-other level with his debut poetry album on CD, which was released a fortnight ago.

His album is titled Khombo, which can loose-ly be translated as “danger”. However, in the original idiom, the title carries more weight which also suggests for a deeper and broader meaning.

“I see myself as this person who has a duty to serve my society through spoken poetry,” Malunghisa told Limpopo Mirror. “This world is fi lled with khombo and anyone who wants to live safely and protected from all evils of this world needs to heed the messages contained in my poems.”

He stressed the idea that he wanted to see people getting and receiving the life-fi lled messages just like the Israelites who had always received both physical and spiritual provision from God. “I am giving you manna which you must collect and eat today,” he says. “Don’t wait for tomorrow – for what if tomorrow never comes?”

The eight-track album contains poems in Tshivenda and Xitsonga. Although Malunghisa was born and grew up at Ravele village in the Sinthumule area (where Tshivenda remains the predominant language) and his fi rst language is seemingly Tshivenda, he speaks fl uent Xitsonga.

“We refused to be moved to Gazankulu in 1979 when the apartheid government used force to sepa-rate us from the Vhavenda in the name of the Group Areas Act,” he remembers. “They tried to give us elephant meat, so we could eat and believe there

was enough food on the other side, but we still refused.”

His refusal to accept defeat is perhaps what made him stand strongly for all those many years before he could release his fi rst album, even though he had discovered that he was a poet and playwright during his high school years.

The album has poems such as Maa-waku!!, Deal, Nwana a sa lili, Xiphephani, Tendani Mudzimu, and Bhomba. “There are a lot of people to thank for working with me on this album,” he said. “Among them are Balcan Sikhwari and Khuthadzo ‘NewBreed’ Rammbwa. They have good ears for the sound.” He was inspired by his late father, Matsilele Charlie Mahwai, who lived in the Funyufunyu mountain. “My father used to play dende and mbila,” he recalls. “When he played his mbila and danced, the stallion of the local chief would join him in the dance.”

Khombo is available in good music stores. For more information on Malunghisa, readers can call 071 361 0540 or 071 193 1387.

New album for Jazz Duka DukaKonanani “Jazz Duka Duka” Munyai, who last released a full-length album some fi ve years ago, says that the love of music, his culture and tradition keep him coming back onto the musical platform with experimental sounds each time he goes to the studio.

Jazz Duka Duka is currently in the studio, re-cording his third album, and he is striving to inject a new feeling into his sound. “I have fi nished this project many times and then sat back to listen to the post-production material,” he shares. “But each time I an-alysed the sound and rhythm, I would go b a c k t o work on it afresh. I don’t wish for my new album to sound as i f i t

were my old work redone with a small twist on the sleeves.” Jazz Duka Duka sounds like a perfectionist, the very gentleman he appears to be in his stylish dreadlocks, black shirt and big trademark sunglasses.

For a man who was previously known as Jaz-zoetry and released the fi rst album under the same name some seven years ago, and was famously known for tracks such a Ndi do vha kwasha and Duka la hayani, the musical journey has been long and also fi lled with ambition and invention. “I was fusing jazz and poetry,” he said. “I understand that I am classifi ed as a Venrap artist.”

Now the continuation of his musical journey will start in February with the promotion of his brand name, when he will be touring the district, the province and Gauteng.

“We want to test the new songs to see if they are what the people out there need,” he said. “You don’t just assume that everyone likes your music and then you churn out an album. What if it turns out to be a total fl op?”

He stresses that he has been silent for some years while trying to assess the Venrap genre and other genres related to Venrap to see how best he could take it to another level. “I seem to have read and cracked the code,” he says slyly. “I see music as a business. I didn’t enter the music industry for art’s sake – I need for my artistic efforts to be rewarded with fi nancial gains.”

Besides music, Jazz Duka Duka is a full-time businessman based in Makhado and Vlei-

fontein. He specialises in dreadlocks, and will soon be opening a shisa-nyama and a car wash. “I want to cre-ate work for several youths,” he said.

Schools

Municipality to invest in educationThe mayor of Musina Municipality, Cllr Mihloti Ramoyada, and some councillors visited sever-al schools within the Musina municipal area during the first week of the academic year to encourage pupils and teachers to start working hard to attain good results at the end of the year.

At Musina High School, Ramoyada said that she was impressed by the level of commitment at the school. “Although your 2014 Grade 12 results have dropped, I want to commend the joint good work by the teachers, pupils, SGB and all stakeholders at the school. I was once a pupil at this school and later became a teacher. I know all the hardships and challenges that the school faces on a daily basis. Thank you for a job well done – but you need to put in more effort in future.”

She said the government continued to promote universal access to education by ensuring that chil-dren get free education and bursaries to further their studies at institutions of higher learning. “Musina Municipality will continue to invest in education and skills development, because that is the key to economic growth and development. We need engineers, electricians, plumbers, doctors, teachers and many other professionals to build the economy in our municipality.”

At Bonwa Udi Primary School, Ramoyada welcomed the pupils who are attending school for the first time and also encouraged the pupils and teachers to work hard.

Municipal news

IT diplomas for Musina officialsA total of 52 students from the Musina Local Municipality received their Information Tech-nology diplomas from Mass Computer FET Training College during a recent ceremony at Musina Show Grounds.

The receivers include councillors, staff members and ward committee members. The initiative is part of the municipality’s skills development plan to create a workforce that is empowered with the necessary knowledge and qualifications.

During the graduation ceremony, Mayor Mihloti Ramoyada congratulated the graduates for having the courage and perseverance to complete their diplomas. She added that the knowledge they gained would help in developing the municipality. She mentioned that education is very important, because “new technologies keep coming up and if you don’t want to be left behind, you must keep up with the world, which is moving really fast.”

One of the students, Mr Kennedy Ravhuanzwo, the municipality’s human resources manager, said that the course had broadened his knowledge of information technology and it would help him to improve his work.

Chief Ravele supports region’s education

Police burn down shacks at the dumping site

The chief of Mauluma village in Nzhelele, Chief Ramaano “Muthu-ha-thonwi” Ravele, continues to nurture educa-tional values among his people.

Through Project Mpho, which was launched last year, another initiative has been launched, namely the Vhukoni education initiative.

During a meeting of the royal council on Sunday, 12 pupils from different school in the community were given school uniforms. This was done in an effort to enhance the activities of the Vhukoni education initiative.

Through this initiative, elected members of community struc-tures such as the development forum, the education forum and

the professional forum monitor the schools and establish the challenges that should be erad-icated. The chief and members of the community will support schools such as Nanga Primary, Tswime Secondary, Velelambeu Secondary, Frank Ravele Sec-ondary, Divhani Primary and Mauluma Primary.

Apart from uniforms for pu-pils, schools also received statio-nery that they will use throughout the year.

A representative from Nzhelele West circuit, Mr Steven Nyelisani Ravele, commended the chief for his involvement in the education of his people. He said it was rare to find a traditional leader with a desire to know what was

happening in the schools within his community.

Chief Ravele stated that the Vhukoni Education Initiative would focus on children’s edu-cation and people’s development. He said that it would influence children, parents and teachers to become involved in education. “We have maintained a cordial relationship with local business people and professional people in our village and they have promised to help this initiative,” he said.

The chief also thanked the principal of Velelambeu Sec-ondary School. The school had achieved a 100% pass rate from Grade 8 to Grade 12 in last year‘s exams.

A group of distraught and sad men lifted up their hands and wrapped their arms round their heads as the makeshift shacks that they had called home for months went up in smoke.

This happened on Friday when the Makhado police team went to burn down the shacks encroaching on the busy area opposite the main gate of the Makhado municipal dumping site outside Louis Trichardt. All those men, who came from different parts of Vhembe, had camped near the dumping site, and they scavenged

for scrap metal in the dumping site.“I come from Tshakhuma and was

staying in my shack here,” said a man, who declined to be named. “They burned my shack. The law destroyed my shack. It is good and convenient for me to collect metal from the ‘dirty box’ (dumping site) when I am camp-ing close by. I then sell it for a living. I have three kids who are all at school. I can’t afford to buy a bus ticket; I am not making much either.”

However, the police’s spokes-person, Const Irene Radzilane, said that it had been reported that many

robbery, assault and mugging cases were taking place in the vicinity of the dumping site and that the victims and complainants suspected the shack dwellers of the crimes.

“We decided to scrap all the illegal shacks as part of crime prevention and fighting crime,” Radzilane said. “The edible stuff collected from the dumping site may also pose health hazards to these men.”

The spokesperson for the Makhado Municipality, Mr Louis Bobodi, said that no person was allowed to occupy a piece of land without the municipal-ity’s permission. “Anyone who occupies a piece of land in this town without our knowledge and consent must know that they are committing a criminal offence,” Bobodi said. “The moment we

learnt about a group of people whose illegal shacks were mushroom-ing in the place near the dumping site, we asked the police to send them off for good.”

Bobodi then stressed the point that the ac-tivities of a group of men who scavenge for scrape metal in the dumping site were ille-gal. “We are not going to allow the situation where people continue to disrespect municipal laws even after they have been made aware of their criminal activ-ities,” he stated. “We will deal with whoever transgresses against the security measures which protect the dumping site.”

Police spokesperson Const Irene Radzilane was spotted striding along a footpath between burning shacks.

In this photograph, the police are seen trying to talk with worried men whose illegal shacks were burnt down.

The makeshift shacks were gutted by the fire.

Skills training for unemployed youth

New taxi rank to bring relief to commuters

The lives of unemployed young people in Vhembe can change for the better, following the launch of the Youth Skills Development Project, a move that will see about 400 young people trained as “water and sanitation specialists”.

The programme is a joint ven-ture between the departments of water and sanitation and public works and the Vhembe district municipality. “Out of this pro-gramme, we seek to produce technicians, artisans, plumbers

and meter reader, amongst oth-ers. The trainees and individual municipalities will benefit from the programme and we urge trainees to use the chance,” said the Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, Ms Pamela Tshwete.

The programme was lauched during a ceremony in the Tho-hoyandou Indoor Sports Centre on Friday.

“We will implement this kind of the project throughout the country to ensure that we ad-equately provide for the most

needed skills in the administra-tion and governance of our mu-nicipalities. All these initiatives are about skills development, job creation, the fight against poverty and the provision of life skills,” Tshwete added.

She mentioned that the project will also teach the communities about the importance of conserv-ing water.

She emphasised that energetic young people must be trained and never roam the streets un-employed.

The new R33 million Sibasa bus and taxi rank that is at present under construction is set to bring relief to local commuters.

It will replace the old and di-lapidated Sibasa rank that is no longer conducive to being used by commuters, and its ablution block is described as a health hazard.

A spokesperson for the Thu-lamela local municipality, Mr Nndwamato Tshiila, said the construction phase had already created 30 jobs and he was op-timistic that more jobs would

be created in future. “It will also have market stalls where street vendors can sell their products, and a ticket house where tickets will be sold to commuters. We are happy that we are doing real development that will benefit our people.” He added that the rank will probably be in operation after September this year.

Mr Thinashaka Netshankhu, community liaison officer for Dolly Construction and Allied Work, the company contracted by the Thulamela municipality to build the rank, said they were working around the clock to

make sure they complete the contract in time.

A previously unemployed community woman, who found employment at the taxi rank, Ms Jennet Tshamaano, said life was hard when she was unemployed, “especially with two children who depend on you as breadwin-ner. Now, with the construction of the new Sibasa bus and taxi rank, life has changed for the better, because we can put food on the table. The functioning of the rank will also help in the development of the communities around,” said Tshamaano.

Construction workers are busy at the new Sibasa bus and taxi rank.

The dedicated members of Dopeni Isibindi Konanani drop-in centre, who are determined to turn the tide of poverty and unemployment in their village.

A group of 10 dedicated women are determined to turn the tide of poverty around in their village.

Every morning, the women of the Dopeni Isibindi Konanani drop-in centre at Dopeni gather with one thing in mind, namely to improve the lives of the members of their community.

Started in 2011 by a few concerned residents, they look after the orphans and vulnerable children in the com-munity, helping them with their homework, feeding them, teaching them traditional dances and other cultural activities.

They take care of 365 children and also visit the sick by making house calls, helping them take their medicine and also cleaning and doing their washing for them.

One of the founder members and

the leader of the organization, Ms Joyce Muhanelwa, said they had started as a response to the needs of the community, where many children were left orphaned because of the HIV/Aids pandemic. “We could not just sit down and pretend that we saw nothing when our community was suffering. We stood up and we are now making a difference in our community, where poverty is the order of the day.”

She mentioned that they were doing their bit to change the community “and we hope that the results will be there for all to see in the near future, However, the lack of financial support makes our job difficult.”

Those wishing to assist can do so by phoning 079 655 7576 or 082 264 7218.

Pupils in Thulamela started their first school day with the support and encouragement from the mayor, Cllr Grace Mahosi, as part of a back-to-school campaign.

The campaign commenced at Jack Lavhengwa Secondary in the rural Khalavha village. Despite

there being only 20 classrooms, and those not being in a good state, last year’s Grade 12 pupils didn’t let the handicaps at school hamper their enthusiasm and they performed well in their final exams.

Mahosi said challenges such as dilapidated classrooms and bad in-frastructure should not be an excuse to perform badly. “Don’t let your bad situation at school or at home be an obstacle; just focus on your school

work in order to change it,” said Mahosi. She said that she was proud that the schools who had performed the best in the province were from the Thulamela municipal area. “In 2015, you have to work harder to achieve even better results, “she said.

The circuit manager from Nzhelele East Circuit, Mr Mukosi Ramutshili, encouraged the teachers to do their best and assist the pupils to perform well.

The body of a woman was found floating in the Vleifon-tein Dam near Louis Trichardt on Monday.

The spokesperson for the Makhado SAPS, Const Irene Radzilane, said the lifeless body of the unknown young woman was discovered by boys who were fishing at the dam. Radzi-

lani described the deceased as a short African woman with short hair, wearing black trousers and a pink, sleeveless top.

Her age is between 30 and 35 and the police are appealing to members of the community to assist with information that can lead to the positive identification of the deceased.

“We have opened an inquest docket and those whose female family members are missing should come to the Makhado police station and help to identify the body.

Those who have informa-tion can contact the Makhado SAPS on 082 5668 233,” said Radzilani.

A mysterious fire that started in one of the garages of a house in Golgotha in Thohoyandou caused damage estimated at nearly R2 million.

The fire, which completely gutted the Neduvhuledza house, was spotted by neighbours on Friday evening at around 21:00. The cause of the fire is still un-known.

House owner Eunice Nedu-vhuledza, an Eskom employee based in Polokwane, said she was at her other home in Polokwane when neighbours phoned to tell her the house was on fire. “There was nothing I could do as I was far away from home, but I tried calling my relatives who were there looking after the house. I only arrived here on Saturday

and was so stressed...”She added that, on her arrival

at home, she was greeted by a mangled wreck of twisted metal and a car that was completely gutted. All the furniture and oth-er articles in all the rooms were completely destroyed.

“This is a disaster that we see on television, happening far from us. This time it was happening to our family! Luckily no one was injured in the fire, and we have only God to thank for protecting us,” she said.

A neighbour, Dr JG Tshifu-laro, said neighbours came in numbers to help but could not save anything as the flames were fierce.

During the visit of the Limpopo Mirror to the house, a group of

neighbours and members of the Sibasa Seventh Day Adventist Church were comforting the family. “We have a welfare wing in our church which deals with such eventualities and we are going to investigate where we can assist them,” said Mr Calvin Chilukwa, who heads the social welfare division at the church. He was accompanied by church elder Simon Nembudane.

Thohoyandou police spokes-person Const Avhafarei Tshiovhe confirmed the incident and said that they had not yet established the cause of the fire. “We can confirm that an arson case was opened, but as of now we do not know the exact cause of the fire, and it will form part of our investigations,” she said.

Neighbours and church members assess the damage caused by the mysterious fire in Thohoyandou.

Bail for three suspected gold smugglers

Kurhuleni community not accepting chief

Three Zimbabwean men, who were arrested last year for attempting to smuggle 7kg of gold into South Africa through the Beit Bridge border post, appeared in court on Friday.

Simbarashe Kangara (30) and Munyaradzi Tatenda (28) appeared before Magistrate In-

nocent Bepura, facing charges of smuggling and possession of ille-gal gold. The case was postponed to 3 February and the two were released on bail of US$400 each.

The court heard that the two men were intercepted on 23 August while transporting 7kg of gold hidden in their car, a Toyota

Harrier, destined for Johannes-burg. The court was told that at around 06:00 that morning, the pair arrived at the border and went through the immigration and customs formalities without declaring the gold.

They were intercepted by de-tectives from the Border Control

Two weeks ago the Mirror reported on the installation of Vho-Ndavheleseni Kharidzha as the new chief of Kurhuleni. What the report neglected to reflect, was that the Kurhuleni community has refused to ac-cept this appointment and even turned to the courts to stop the ceremony from going ahead. The ceremony was also marred by protest action, during which the police were called in to try and restore order.

The Kurhuleni Community Authority Council reacted to the newspaper report last week and, in a media release, threatens to file contempt-of-court charges against Thovhele Nthumeni Masia. The Kurhuleni Council obtained a court interdict on 19 December last year, which prohibits the installation of a new chief until such time as the legal dispute concerning the land is finalised.

Mr Owen Makhubele of the Kurhuleni community structure said that the action of Masia to appoint a chief is a clear sign of tribal cleansing and it increases tension between the Tsonga and Venda people. “Masia has already illegally occupied land

belonging to the Tsonga, and he is widely perceived to harbour hatred of the Tsonga,” Mahubele states in the press release. The case that is currently in the High Court concerns the land (Farm Ongedacht, LT52) that the Kurhuleni community believe belongs to them.

According to Makhubele, the rightful candidate for the position of chief is Mr Magezi Noel Pata-ka. He said that the Masia Royal Council appointed Kharidzha as the chief of Kurhuleni, but they believed the correct procedures had not been followed as the land did not belong to the Vhavenda. “Our own research shows most of the land Masia currently occupies belonged to us, but for the sake of peace we allow the status quo to remain. However, he will not be allowed to loot whatever remains of our land,” said Makhubele.

The chairperson for the Masia Royal Council, Chief Nkhipheni Livhuwani Matsila, did not want to comment on the issue and said such matters should not be discussed in the media or settled in court. He said that the correct channels needed to be followed and the issue should be discussed during a gathering of the relevant

members of the royal family. He said that no single individual person appointed the new chief as it was the responsibility of the royal family.

Chief Matsila explained that, according to Venda culture, the chieftaincy (Vhuhosi) is the property of the family and the chief is the “manager” of that property. “The appointment of the successor will thus be the re-sponsibility of the royal family,” he said. Matsila said that they had defended the interdict on 19 De-cember and only thereafter had they finally installed the chief.

Unit as they were about to leave the border at the exit gate.

The vehic le was searched, leading to the discovery of eight bars of gold. As they failed to produce legal documents, they were arrested.

“Look after yourself and study hard”The MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Ms Ma-pula Mokaba-Phukwana, urged the pupils of Swobani Secondary School in Mad-abani village to focus on their studies in earnest.

This after the school obtained only a 29% Grade 12 pass rate in the 2014 exams.

Addressing the pupils last Wednesday, Mokaba-Phukwa-na said pupils should change the perception that their school regularly performed poorly. She said it was of paramount impor-tance for pupils to refrain from alcohol and substance abuse and focus on their education.

She also called for the pupils’

parents to attend the school’s meetings and take full respon-sibility for their children’s education.

“Pupils, look after yourself and focus on your studies. The government has bursaries and education will change your lives for the better,” she said. She warned against the problems

that teenage pregnan-cies are creating and said the pupils must focus on their goals in life.

Apparently, Swo-bani Secondary had been known over the past few years for pro-ducing poor results. According to many observers in the area, the low pass rate is directly influenced by the pupils’ behaviour. It was highlighted that pupils are not obedient and hardly listen to their teachers.

Joe Express and Mighty in a 3-3 draw

Sale of immature avocados prohibited

Defend the ANC, Mkhize tells mourners

The struggle for promotion and to avoid relegation was on among the affiliates of the ABC Motsepe Soccer League last weekend.

It was a feast of goals when Joe’s Express held Mighty FC to a thrilling 3-3 draw at the Seshego Stadium last Friday afternoon. Levy Matshavha of Joe Express scored a brace and the captain, Dakalo “DK” Rat-shitanga, scored the third. Mighty FC responded through Lawrence Mohale, Steven Maseko and

David Mokgale.Great North beat Giyani

Hotspurs 2-1 and in their Water-berg derby Modimolle on Sun-day, A1 Terrors beat Modimolle Aces 1-0.

Lephalale Young Killers col-lected three important points without kicking the ball. They were supposed to have played against Blue Rocks in Lephalale, but the Rocks did not turn up for the match. The only goal in the game was good enough to earn Magezi FC three points at the

expense of Winners Park. The goal came in the 75th minute via Julius Ngwenya, who headed home after a corner kick.

Dynamos gave away points to The Dolphins after their 1-2 defeat. Bilika All Stars shared the spoils with Polokwane Unit-ed, with whom they played to a 1-1 draw at the Giyani Stadium, while Mosesetjane All Stars were given a day to remember, follow-ing their 1-5 defeat at the hands of Bellevue Winners Park at the Nkowankowa Stadium.

The sale of immature avocados (which will not ripen properly) is prohibited in terms of the Agricultural Product Stan-dards Act.

According to a statement by the South African Avocado Growers’ Association, inspectors from the Department of Agri-culture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) will be testing maturity levels of early season avocados offered for sale.

If avocados are found to be

immature, the sale of this fruit will be prohibited.

In the past, avocados found by inspectors to be immature were downgraded to “lowest grade” but could still be sold. However, since 2014, the sale of immature fruit has been prohibited. Avoca-do growers are advised to ensure that their fruit meets the required maturity standard before being picked.

For the cultivar fuerte, fruit moisture content must be 80%

or less. Reputable avocado pack-houses are all able to carry out the necessary maturity testing.

The statement also appealed to growers to make sure that their avocados are properly mature before harvesting to ensure that they do not run the risk of their fruit being prohibited from being sold.

For further information on maturity testing, contact the Subtropical Growers Association (Subtrop) at Tel. 015 307 3676/7.

ANC treasurer general Dr Zweli Mkhize has told ANC members they must defend the ANC.

Speaking during the memorial service of Ms Thembi Nweda-mutswu, MEC for Education and ANC provincial treasurer, at the Univen Stadium on Sat-urday, Mkhize said the ANC had worked for the democracy in South African that everybody cherished. In an apparent refer-ence to the Econominc Freedom Fighters, he said there were peo-ple who had gone to Parliament prematurely without knowing what it meant. He said they had made South Africa the laughing stock of the world and this must not be allowed to happen.

“Parliament is an august body where the laws of the country are made and order and respect should be the order of the day,” said Mkhize. He said ANC mem-

bers should defend their party against disruptions, because it was the ANC that had worked to make it possible for parties to go to a democratic parliament and disrupts proceedings.

Mkhize’s message was also directed at the ANC leadership in the region and province that the NEC expected them to work for the growth of the party and they should desist from promoting factions.

During the service, tributes also came from ANC Women’s League president Angie Motshe-ga and Limpopo Premier Stan Mathabatha. “Thembi feared no one, but she did not disrespect anybody,” said Motshega.

Mathabatha also praised the former politician’s hard work, es-pecially as MEC “as she led the Grade 12 results in the province to improve”.

The family of Nwedamutswu

had blunt words for the ANC. Takalani Nwedamutswu, the younger brother of Mr Mamabolo Nwedamutswu, the MEC’s hus-band, said the family’s message to Thembi’s party was to emulate her, so that the party would exist for generations to come. Without mentioning names, Takalani said the family was disheartened to re-alise that some in the ANC were doing wrong things like promot-ing factions, at a great cost to the party, and that was not what his sister-in-law had stood for.

Minister Edna Molewa also gave a moving eulogy.

The late MEC was married to ANC stalwart Mamabolo Nwedamutswu. He attended the ceremony in a wheelchair.

She is survived by her hus-band and four children: Manu, Mpile, Leko and Aluwani. She was cremated the day before the memorial service.

“The church must know and under-stand that part of its purpose in society is to add value to its respective commu-nities through preaching the Word of God and embarking on projects which uplift the living standard of those com-munities.”

Dr Fitzgerald Dzivhani, who facilitates the evangelical courses at the Armed 4 Harvest Ministries School of Evangelism, imparted this to a group of students who had recently passed theology courses at the school.

“Each one of us has been gifted with a gift or gifts, and for your gift to realise its purpose, you need to function and not just be an empty, noisy drum,” he said. “This world is filled with crime where youths have no sense of respect. It needs you to restore morals by bring-ing them to the right way of life. Teach them the Word of God, so that they may have dis-cipline and a conscience which stops them from doing wrong.”

Dr Dzivhani then urged the students and the community to start initiating projects that would give job oppor-tunities to unemployed people. “It is not wrong to give food and clothes

to the needy, but it makes a lot of differ-ence in that person's life if you give him or her a job,” he said.

The officiating officer and education practitioner, Mr Mattwew Mhlongo, said that the newly graduated evangelists should use the knowledge of God to ex-ercise their intelligence in a way that will benefit everyone. “When I look at you, I see philosophers, poets, scientists, engi-neers, composers, ministers, landscape architects and inventors,” he said. “All you need to do is to let God use you in his own way. Don't misuse the energy and strength which God gave you by directing

it into doing wrong, meaningless and evil things.”

Mr Mainganye Godfrey Nephawe (64), the representative of the students, said that he considered his courses at the school as a victory towards the “Great Commission” of the school of evangelism. “Besides preaching God's word, our duties as evangelists include speaking to gov-ernment departments and municipalities to give proper services to the people,” Nephawe said.

“Even the Bible tells us to respect and honour our leaders, so that, in turn, they can serve us with good hearts.”

Vhavenda King Toni Mphephu Ram-abulana encourages all pupils around Vhembe to start working hard at school

from the first day of the year if they want to pass at the end of it.

In an interview with Limpopo Mirror, Mphephu said studying was a process that required dedication, concentration and effective time management. "Learning is a structural process that involves surveying, reading, revising and the consolidation of knowledge. Give yourself enough time to study because you will never succeed if you start studying only during examination time."

He emphasised that pupils must work with the teachers, lis-ten to them and obey instructions "and you'll see yourself achieving good results."

He acknowledged the fact that there are many temptations which entice the youngsters along the way, such as parties where they imbibe liquor when they should be studying. “Stay away from all those things,” he said. “Such a lifestyle might seem enjoyable and feel good, but I am telling you the truth - it only lasts for a short moment and

then you are doomed."He added that a nation without educa-

tion would not develop. The youth must use the directions of the adults to become responsible members of society.

He said the decision to make it in life lay with the individual pupil.

“You either choose to make it or fail in life, but whatever unwise decision you make, will come back to haunt you later in life,” he said. He also encouraged the youth to pray for whatever they want in life. He concluded by encouraging all learners to use their time profitably. “There is time for everything; allocate more time to your school work and you will get the best results at the end of the year,” he said.

He advised the pupils to find cooper-ative learning groups for better results. "Consult your teachers if you feel there is something you don’t understand well. Focus on your educational achievements and avoid using any unusual sleeping stimulants."

According to him, some pupils are fail-ing, not because they do not know what they are writing about, but because they are not prepared for the examinations. "Let us prepare in advance," he said.

Western Stars' Silas "Parker" Rammbona scored the only goal of the match.

Silas "Parker" Rammbona has steered Madombidzha West-ern Stars to a 1-0 victory over Madombidzha Arsenal in an MMK Administrators match at Madombidzha on Saturday.

Arsenal took the game to Stars in the first 20 minutes. Their speedy forward, Ritshidze Mutangwa, let them down by shooting aimlessly at the goal finish. Stars rectified their mis-takes soon afterwards. Their diminutive kingpin, Maanda Magoro, beat the offside trap but lost possession with only keeper Hector Malange at his mercy.

Phumudzo Mafukata, the Stars' left flank, had his chance in the 25th minute after receiving a brilliant pass from Eric Sefularo. He shot aimlessly from close range and the ball went wide. The referee flashed the first yellow card in the 40th minute. Oscar Leaka obstructed Dakalo Nwanamidwa and the referee was lenient enough to let him go with yellow, as the nature of the offence carries the weight of a red card.

The scoreboard was still blank when the teams adjourned for half time. Early in the second

half, Stars introduced Thabo-Matuba and Percy Munonoka respectively. The only goal of the match came in the 70th minute. Silas Rammbona beat the keeper after dribbling past two defenders in a row.

Arsenal initially showed a spirit of commitment, but their original stamina vanished and their back line started to leak. Asernal had a taste of bad luck in the 86th minute when Londy Musiamo shot into the hands of the keeper from a penalty spot in the dying minutes.

ABC Motsepe league

Joe Express ready to demolish Dolphins

Black Leopards in search for a striker

Seven ABC Motsepe matches will be played throughout the province tomorrow afternoon and one will be played on Sunday.

Joe’s Express, the only side from Vhembe Dis-trict in the league, will entertain their home fans. They will host The Dolphins at the Makwarela Sta-dium tomorrow afternoon. Express are sharpened to kill after collecting one point away from home last weekend. They drew 3-3 with Mighty FC at the Seshego Stadium last Friday. Levy Matshavha scored a brace in the game, while Dakalo “DK” Ratshitanga scored the third.

Mighty’s goals came via Lawrence Mohale, Steven Maseko and David Kgalane. According to the coach of Joe’s Express, Mr Ntsedzeni Phas-wana, The Dolphins will be lucky if by chance they manage to go back home with a draw. The Express demon midfi elders, Ishmael Jimo and Ndivhuwo “Segere” Ravhuhali, will keep their opponents’ defence running for cover if they are not well contained.

Mosesetjane All Stars will host Great North in Mokopane, while the pace setters, Bellevue Winners Park, will meet Polokwane United at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium. Dynamos and Bilika All Stars will meet at the Giyani Stadium in their Mopani derby.

It will be a double header at Giyani, and the second match, Giyani Hotspurs vs A1 Terrors, will start at 17:00.

The other matches are Magezi FC vs Mighty FC and Blue Rocks vs Winners Park. On Sunday,

As part of their many ways to restore the team’s lost pride, Black Leopards are searching for a player who will solve their goal-scoring problems. This was revealed by the club’s chairman, Mr David Thidiela, in a telephonic interview with Limpopo Mirror.

According to Thidiela, one of the reasons why they are cur-rently lying in the bottom half of the National First Division League log is that their strikers are not scoring. Lidoda Duvha are in the 11th spot on the log, with 18 points accumulated from 16 matches. They are 14 points behind the pace setters, Jomo Cosmos.

Thidiela stated that the fact that their strikers were not scoring as

expected was a source of concern to him. He further indicated that even the strikers they had signed four months ago with the hope that they would change the team’s complexion were not delivering as anticipated. He was referring to Bongani Manana and Sanele Mkhize.

Thidiela further stated that it was embarrassing to see that the team’s leading goal scorer, Leon-ard Ntshangase, was a midfi elder. “How can a top goal scorer be a midfi elder, whereas there are strikers whose job is to score goals?” he asked. Ntshangase has scored six goals to date.

When asked about the kind of striker they were searching for, the Leopards’ boss said that they were hunting for the kind

of striker who would not be shy when he saw the goal posts.

Thidiela is adamant that they will fi nd the striker before the registration window closes next Friday.

He further indicated that their new coach, Mr Zeca Marques, was busy working on the fi tness of the players. According to him, one of the reasons his team could not absorb pressure from their opponents throughout the game, was that they did not have adequate pre-season preparations for the season.

Black Leopards will host Jomo Cosmos in their opening league match after the Christmas recess. The Thohoyandou outfit must win the match at all costs in order to keep their title hopes alive.

Modimolle Aces will face Lephalale Young Killers.

United Artists and Seven Stars in drawIn their MMK Administrators Soccer League match at the Lufule grounds on Saturday, Thembaluvhilo Seven Stars rose to the occasion and held United Artists to a goalless draw.

The game was not a true refl ection of the game as United Artists wasted numerous scoring opportunities.

Seven Stars played defensive football for the better part of the fi rst half. They only started

Lucky Siobo of United Artists controls the ball.

Maduvha Mudologi of United Artists (left) and Ramudzuli Bulannga of Seven Stars chase the ball.

to launch some attacks after realizing that the Artists’ strikers seemed to have left their scoring boots at home.

Artists’ diminu-tive left back, Rone-wa Gidi, was out of touch. He committed numerous mistakes within his own danger area, but the visitors’ strikers failed to cap-italize on that. As if they were hypnotized, the Stars’ goal poach-ers just stood aside and looked on as Gidi committed silly mis-takes.

The Artists’ veter-an defender, Madu-vha Mudologi, was unlucky in the 24th minute. He was al-lowed enough space

to unleash from the edge of the box. The ball missed the goal mouth by inches, much to the fans’ disappointment.

Jeffrey Mungoni, the Artists bulldozer striker, could not live up to the fans’ expectations and was tightly marked.

Realizing that Mungoni was not delivering as anticipated, the team’s technical staff replaced him with Mushe Luvhimbi in the opening minutes of the second half.

Ramudzuli Bulannga of Sev-en Stars was booked for dan-gerous play in the 64th minute.

Luvhimbi was unlucky when he won a loose ball from the left corner and tried his luck from just outside the box. The ball hit the woodwork and landed outside the fi eld of play for a goal kick. Artists later replaced Rofhiwa Nembudani with Sam-uel Mathebula, but that did not change the complexion of the game.

Gogobole Bucs were too strong for Madombidzha Try Again and beat them 3-1 in a Limpo-po Dairy League match at the Gogobole grounds on Sunday.

The match started at a fast pace, with both sides throwing caution into the wind with their fiery play. Try Again's scorers wasted numerous opportunities. Bucs was strong at the far back and the striking force department, but they lacked cohesion in the middle of the park.

Bucs threatened to score 27 minutes into the match. Fhulufhelo Ramabulana forced his way through the defence of Try Again before passing the ball to Vicky Mulaudzi. His attempt missed the target by inches. The score was still nil-nil at halftime.

The second half saw Bucs pressing hard in search of goals. Real-izing that their chances were slim, Try Again abandoned their po-si t ions and packed themselves at the far back. Try Sebola of Bucs scored his team's first goal in the 54th minute. He unleashed a

powerful shot from outside the box and the keeper of Try Again, Mishumo Phathela, watched in disbelief as the ball hit the net, giving Bucs a 1-0 lead.

Try Again lost shape in the midfield and Bucs capitalized to score their second in the 69th minute via Fanie Sadiki.

Reara Manavhela of Try Again

dribbled pas three players in a row and blasted in a rocket from inside the box to score the only goal of his team. Elelwani Maru-bini of Bucs were given a red card for a second bookable offence.

Fanie Sadiki completed his brace after he finished off a square pass from Vicky Mulaudzi late in the game.

Three unknown suspects pounced on an Ethio-pian shop owner last Tuesday and robbed him at gunpoint.

The suspects, who were driving a black Toyota Tazz, allegedly went to his shop during the day at Mashau Thondoni and threatened to kill him if he did not give them what they wanted. The robbers demanded money and cigarettes. The three men allegedly took R1 000 and 10 packets of cigarettes before fleeing.

The Levubu Police are investigating the inci-dent. “We believe that the community structures will assist us in bringing the perpetrators to book,” said Levubu police spokesperson W/O Solly Mukhola.

Mr David Thidiela.

Leopards vs Cape Town in NedbankThe last-32 draw for the Ned-bank Cup was conducted at the Supersport Studios in Johan-nesburg last Thursday evening.

Black Leopards have reason to regard themselves lucky. They will host another National First Division League side, FC

Cape Town, at home.

The chair-man of Black Leopards, Mr David Thidie-la, said that the fact that they had won the home-ground advantage was a bonus to the team’s fans. He indicated that their aim was to reach at least the semifinal stage of the competition in order to restore the team’s lost pride.

When asked whether they had lost hope when it comes

to the league title, Thidiela stated that winning the league champi-onship was something that was still within reach. He further revealed that they wanted to do what they had done four years be-fore, when they had reached the final stage of the Nedbank Cup.

The last 32 matches will be played over the weekend of 17-19 February. The other matches are: Bellevue Winners Park vs Vasco da Gama, Bidvest Wits vs Free State Stars, Amazulu vs Lamontville Golden Arrows, Mpumalanga Black Aces vs Maritzburg United, Orlando Pi-rates vs Tornado FC, University of Pretoria vs Moroka Swallows, Mamelodi Sundowns vs Thanda Royal Zulu, Supersport United vs Polokwane City, African Warriors vs Maluti FET College, Bloemfontein Celtic vs Shining Stars, Chippa United vs Natal United, Phiva Young Stars vs Jomo Cosmos, Kaizer Chiefs vs Africa All Stars, Platinum Stars vs The Magic FC and Mainstay United vs Ajax Cape Town.

After beating Shayandima Dis-co Five 3-0 at home two weeks ago, Mutandani Pull Together continued to collect league points last weekend. They beat Tshakhuma RO United 2-1 at the Tshakhuma Malaria grounds on Sunday.

The absence of Khathutshelo Mukomafhedzi in the United’s defence was evident from the on-set. Although the United defence was shaky, their acrobatic keeper, Adziambei Sigaba, abandoned his position at times to assist the defenders. The scoreboard was still blank when the teams

adjourned for the half-time break.Pull Together were awarded

a free kick in the 25-meter area seven minutes into the last half. A substitute, Norman Munyadzi-wa, beat the keeper with a volley from the place kick. The goal was a wakeup call to the players of RO United. They were awarded a penalty in the 68th minute. Their centre forward, Mulisa Luvhen-go, was brought down within the box. Their keeper, Adziambei Sigaba, made no mistake from the white spot.

The players of Pull Together were not happy with the refer-

ee’s decision to award United a penalty. They confronted him angrily, accusing him of being biased. The situation came back to normal after their veteran defender, Nathaniel Maise, was reprimanded with a card. Lufu-no Mugodi of United was also warned with a card for obstruct-ing the opponents’ keeper.

Pull Together snatched the winning goal nine minutes before the fi nal whistle. Mazwifhi Khan-gale gave the ball a fi nal touch after a scramble within the box.

More points for Mutandani

Ronald Midana of Pull Together and Mulisa Luvhengo of RO United fi ght to win the ball.

Thabelo Nefuri of RO United (left) and Thuso Mangenge of Pull Together wrestle to win the ball.

Thuso Mangenge of Pull Together is sandwiched by Ndivhuwo Makhado (right) and Takalani Ratshilima of RO United.
