Unarine is the fairest lady in the Makhado areaAn 18-year-old journalism student from Rosebank College, Ms Unarine Sinwamali, was crowned the new Miss Makhado two weeks ago. The first princess is Ms Hazel Siwadawada (16) and Ms Mpho Maemu (21) was crowned as the second princess. The Ms Personality title went to Ms Khu-liso Mulaudzi (19).

The Miss Makhado beauty pageant was organised by Moe’s Beauty and Pro-motions agency (MBP) and was held at the Makhado show grounds late last year (December 20). The organisers received a large number of entries and the 15 finalists had to pass a series of rehearsals.

The agency's founder and competition organiser, Ms Zwonaka Miranda Malaka, said despite the entertainment that came with the competition, they were hoping to teach young women in the region the purpose of setting and achieving goals in life.

"This competition is going to be an

annual event and will continue to provide a modelling opportunity to uncover local talent," said Ms Malaka.

Miss Makhado 2014/2015, Ms Sin-wamali, went home with a beauty hamper, a one year MBP (Moe’s Beauty and Promotions) contract, a modelling photoshoot opportunity, R2 000 in cash, J. Badane Design vouchers and Zukwa clothing vouchers.

The first princess, Ms Siwadawada, went home with a Beauty Hamper, MBP one-year contract, a photoshoot opportunity and R1 000 in cash, whilst the second princess, Ms Maemu, received a beauty ham-per, MBP one-year contract, a photoshoot opportunity and R500 in cash.

Ms Sinwamali, who hails from Vleifontein, said she would donate R500 of her prize money to the charity of her choice. “I’ve enjoyed every moment of the

competition, despite all the challenges that came with it,” she said.

She said she would spend this year educating young people of her age about the importance of embracing their beauty. She is also going to be interviewed by the soon-to-be-launched TV station in the province, Limpopo TV.

The agency will enter Ms Sinwamali for this year's Miss Commonwealth competition and she will also be entered for this year's Miss Teen SA.

The pupils of the Rivoni Society for the Blind came out tops in the category for special schools. Nomsa Zitha (centre) was the best in the province in their category, S h u n d u f h a d z o Muvhango (r ight) came second and P o n t s h o M a l a t j i e (right) third.

The Vhembe district was the top district in terms of quality results: Photographed during the announcement of the 2014 matric results are the Vhembe District Senior Manager, Dr Gerson Rambiyana, with the winners' trophy and the MEC for Sports, Art and Culture, Ms Nandi Ndalane.

Mbilwi again boasts with most university exemption passes

An elated Avheani Maitakhole of Makakavhale High at Lwamondo was the fifth best pupil in the province with seven A-symbols.

K h e t h a S i g u d u of Thengwe High obtained 300 marks out of a possible 300 in mathematics.

continues from p1He added that the school’s consis-

tent success record could be attributed to the fact that they concentrated on mathematics and physical science subjects, a speciality for which it

produces 100% pass rates year after year. “We teach only one stream; our focus is maths and science, then we have life sciences or biology and the languages.” he said.

Apart from special programmes

of 2014 “for making the province proud”. Lim-popo obtained a 72,9% pass rate, a 1,1% in-crease from last year’s result.

such as winter and spring schools, which attract pupils who camp in Venda from around the country for a fortnight, Lidzhade said pupils were some-times encouraged to come to school on Saturdays and Sundays because “the input will equal the output; you can’t reap what you don’t sow."

Not only did Mbilwi outshine its counterparts in the province, but it has contributed to the success of the Vhembe district, which emerged as the overall best in the province with an 81,1% pass rate.

Avheani Maitakhole (18) from the rural Maka-kavhale High at Lwamondo obtained a 100% pass in physical science, maths, English, life sciences, geography, Tshivenda and life orientation. She said her sterling performance emanated from the support she got from her teachers, parents and classmates. She will start her studies in medicine at the University of Cape Town this year.

“We had the best teachers who were fully com-mitted and always there for us. They go the extra mile for us in every subject, and they cry with us [joyfully] when we do well. We have a good sup-port system and the children help each other, so that everybody does well,” Maitakhole said, adding that those who failed matric should never give up.

Premier Stan Mathabatha congratulated the class

“Distinguished journalist and communicator” buriedThe Minister of Mineral Resources, Adv Ngoako Ramatlhodi, described the late Jack Maropeng Mokobi (46) as a distinguished journalist, communicator, educator, political analyst and a son of the soil. He was addressing thousands of mourners who attended Mokobi’s funeral service at Musina Show Grounds on Saturday.

Mokobi died on Christmas Day after a short illness. He was laid to rest at the Musina Cemetery.

“This man we are burying here today has played a major role in the development of government commu-nication in this country. His legacy will continue to guide the young generation to defend our democracy. He will always be remembered for his fearless revolutionary spirit. His contribution to the attainment of de-mocracy in this country will never be forgotten. May his soul rest in peace,” Ramathlodi said.

The mayor of Musina, Cllr Mohloti Ramoyada, emphasised the contribu-tion of Mokobi in the development of the town. "At this critical time of celebrating 20 years of freedom, we have great need for outstanding pa-triots such as Jack Mokobi. We need not a thousand Jack Mokobis. We will always remember his contributions to bring a better life for all.”

Mokobi was born on 9 September 1967 in Musina (then known as Mes-sina) from a working-class family. He started his primary school at Bonwa Meetse Primary School, moved to Musina High School and matriculated at Marumofase High School at Inder-mark village.

From an early age, he demonstrated deep love and interest in the fi eld of communication and media. His fi rst post-matric qualifi cation was a Freelance Journalism Diploma from Success Correspondence College in 1987. He then acquired his teacher's diploma from the then Transvaal College of Education in 1990.

He completed a course for senior managers with the South African Management Development Institute Academy in 2000 and also studied and completed a certifi cate in Public Finance Management with the Public Finance Management Academy in 2000.

He then received a scholarship from the British Council to further his studies in the United Kingdom, where he completed a Post-Graduate Diplo-ma in Media and Communications at the Birmingham City University in 2000. The following year he com-pleted a Master of Arts Degree at the same university where he researched a dissertation titled: The battle for the soul of the SABC, how commercial advertising infl uences the SABC’s news and programming values.

On his return home, he registered with the University of the Witwa-tersrand and obtained a certifi cate in managing corporate communication. He then completed another certifi cate with the same university on fi nance for non-fi nancial managers in 2009.

With the unbanning of the ANC and other political organizations, Mokobi became head of publicity and information for the ANC in the then Northern Province in 1992. It was during this time that he started the

ANC newsletter called Way Forward. He also played a critical role in the establishment of the Communication Directorate in the Premier’s Offi ce.

After serving as Head of Commu-nication in Premier Ngoako Ramatl-hodi’s offi ce, he was recruited to the offi ce of former Pres Nelson Mandela as the deputy director of communica-tions from 1996 to 1998. He returned to Limpopo in 1998, where he was appointed as director for marketing and communications and was later promoted to chief director.

Mokobi resigned from the public service in 2003 to run a consulting business, Morokoro Communica-tions. He returned to government in 2007, where he was appointed by the then premier, Mr Sello Moloto, as his special advi-sor. He later resigned from the State to join MPPJ Property and Infrastructure Devel-opers as a managing member.

During his last days, he returned to government to join the Limpopo Department of Education as a senior manager. He is survived by his moth-er, wife Joy, two children, Frank and Moloko, brother David, sisters Suzan, Martjie and Emma.

Legendary author laid to restDr Titus Maumela, one of most published Tshivenda writers, was laid to rest in the Maumela ceme-tery at Mangodi over the weekend.

The funeral service, attended by family, friends and many community members, took place at the local Pres-byterian Church in Vhufuli outside Thohoyandou.

Everyone hailed Dr Maumela as a loving, strict person whose legacy should be carried on.

On behalf of the family, Judge Tshifhiwa Maumela of the North Gauteng High Court said they were proud of his achievements.

“He wrote his books for the whole nation and therefore we are happy to share his legacy with the entire nation,” said the judge. According to him, Dr Maumela led the nation to value its culture, language and tradition.

He said he taught the family the meaning of family in the African sense and not merely in the European sense. “All of us in the country need

to protect his legacy,” said Judge Maumela.

Dr Maumela was inaugurated president of Mudzi in 2011. He wrote the first Tshivenda novel, Elelwani, which was later adapted into a film. He died on Christmas Day at the age of 91 after a long illness.

During his lifetime, he wrote a total of 62 books. They consist of 18 novels, eight dramas, eight short stories, one essay, three folk tales, and 13 grammar books as well as 11 unpublished works.

In 1998, the University of Venda awarded him an honorary doctorate for the promotion of the Tshivenda language.

He belonged to the Mphaphuli dynasty, now led by Thovhele Gole Mphaphuli, and was the great-great-grandson of Chief Makwarela Mp-haphuli.

He was the first-born son of Mphe-phu Frans Maumela Mphaphuli and his wife Masindi Muthathe Sidogi Maumela.

“People must speak out against abuse”

The mayor of Makhado Municipality, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, and the MEC for Sports, Art and Culture, Ms Nandi Ndalane, visited various local hospitals on Christmas Day. Mutavhatsindi was dressed as Santa Claus and handed gifts to the young ones in various hospitals. They visited Louis Trichardt Memorial, Elim and Siloam Hospital in Nzhelele. Some of the stakeholders who attended the dialogue at Tshifulanani.

The Munna Ndi Nnyi Men’s Forum, in partnership with stakeholders such as the Vu-wani SAPS, the Lwamondo traditional authority and Legal Aid SA, which are champion-ing non-violence against wom-en and children, took another approach.

They decided to identify the root causes of the evil acts against women and children.

An event, which was attended by many organizations and stake-holders, took place at Munna Ndi Nnyi’s new office buildings at the

end of last year. The coordinator, Mr Bardwell Mufunwaini, said they had had many campaigns all over the country, but the scourge of abuse seemed to be on the increase.

“We cannot be spectators while our women folk and chil-dren are being maimed, attacked and facing different forms of abuse.

We have to dig deep and iden-tify the root causes, and we invit-ed these people so that they could speak out themselves. Hopefully, we will come up with resolutions

that could ease the scourge and we hope that, this time around, we can do away with it once and for all,” he said.

He added that all stakeholders had taken an oath to help fight the scourge.

W/O Elijah Malatjie of the Vuwani SAPS said that their po-licing area had managed to bring the scourge under control through personal interaction “with people on the ground. We do door-to-door campaigns where we visit communities and inform them about abuse.”

Cansa Relay

By Kaizer NengovhelaBy Elmon Tshikhudo

Have you entered for the Relay for Life?

Kharidzha to reign in Kuruleni areaAzwi honours former pres Mphephu

Have you entered your team for this year’s Louis Trichardt CANSA Relay for Life?

If not, the question from the organisers is: “Why not?”

This year, the Relay will be hosted on 13 and 14 March on the sport grounds of Louis Trichardt High School.

Over the past three years, residents have shown unprece-

dented support for this project. The Cansa Relay for Life is about showing support for people who have overcome cancer or who still have cancer. Support is shown by spending a whole night walking with them.

As pets will not be allowed to participate in this year’s relay, the organisers thought of host-ing a mini-relay especially just

for them. The Bark for Life event will be

hosted on Saturday, 24 January, at the Makhado Crossing from 09:00.

For more information, entries to both events or to become part of the local relay team, Nicky Olwage can be contacted on 084 600 0679 or Dirk Meissenheimer at 082 789 3927.

Vho-Ndavheleseni Kharidzha was installed as the new chief of Kuruleni last Saturday. The event took place at the Kuruleni grounds.

During the event, Thovhele Vho-Nthumeni Masia said the inauguration of Kharidzha was “a traditional mandate and a contribution to the cultural rebirth of the Kuruleni people.” The event was attended by traditional leaders from the sur-rounding villages, local businesspeople and many members of the community.

“We are following tradition. Chiefs form a very important part in traditional leadership. Our traditional leaders are the eyes and inform us of everything that happens on the ground and are of great use to the community,” Masia said.

He advised the new chief to work for the people and to support the government. He must also work hand in hand with the councillors, the community and other chiefs. Masia encouraged the new chief to carry out his duties as the leader of his clan with dedication. He also told him to refrain from bad habits, stressing that political parties should respect their chiefs, since they are the leaders of their communities.

He told the community not to undermine the position of traditional leaders, because it would bring instability, misunderstandings and conflicts

that should be avoided at all cost. He also encour-aged the new chief to work hard but warned him against the danger of power abuse.

The new chief of Kuruleni, Ndavheleseni Kha-ridzha.

The former presidential chauf-feur of the then Republic of Venda, Chief Ndiyangandothe Magoloi Mphaphuli, left guests in stitches when he relived the good old days he spent transporting the late Patrick Ramaano Mphephu.

This was during the Azwi Development Agency’s second Patrick Mphephu Memorial Lec-ture, held at the Mphephu Suite of the Khoroni Hotel shortly before Christmas.

The lecture was attended by King Makhosonke Mabena of the Amandebele and Modjadji of the Pedi, almost all Venda thovhele, many chiefs and other guests.

The event also celebrated 15 years of Azwi’s existence as well as the renewal of marriage vows by the Mafunzwaini family.

The initiator of the lecture and founder of Azwi Devel-

opment Agency, Mr Jackson Mafunzwaini, said they felt that Mphephu should be remembered for the selfless sacrifices he made in order to better the lives of the Vhavenda nation.

“I still remember when I was taken from the classroom to go and serve in his government. There was no interview at that time; he took me from humble beginnings to what I am today. Through him, many projects were initiated, such as the Uni-versity of Venda. Khoroni Hotel, where we are today, was initiated by him.

Thohoyandou town was his dream, and the Nandoni Dam came into being also because of him. Surely this calls for him to be remembered and he will always be in our minds,” he said.

Chief Magoloi narrated an incident when he accompanied

the former president to the Swazi Kingdom, “and we had airbus tickets.

What we thought was that we were going to catch a bus, but the bus never came. After a long time, we asked a man who looked at our tickets and told us we were supposed to have boarded a plane that had left a long time ago!”

Thovhele Nadedzo Nelwa-mondo described Mphephu as a visionary who had the interests of the Vhavenda nation at heart.

In response, the present in-cumbent and Khosikhulu of the Vhavenda Kingdom, King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana, said he was happy that those who had worked with his father were able to tell the real story and that it would help him have a better understanding of his father as the latter had died while the king was still young.

King Toni Mphephu, son and Khosikhulu ya Venda (left), and King Makhosonke Mabena of the Amandebele listen attentively as Chief Magoloi relives the history during the second Azwi Development Mphephu Memorial Lecture.

Makhado Municipality moves closer to a clean audit

Holiday Soccer

Tshakhuma champsTshakhuma RO United are the new champions of the Tshakhuma Holiday Tournament. They beat Tshakhuma Na Ndilani 2-0 in the final of the tournament at the Tshakhuma Tshiemuemu grounds on Sunday.

RO United received a soccer kit, gold medals, a floating trophy and soccer balls during a ceremony held at the grounds after the final.

The U/13 category was won by Tshakhuma Yebo Yes. Yebo Yes lost 1-2 to Tshakhuma Peace Lovers in the final but the game was played under protest after Peace Lovers failed to produce identification documents for some of the players. The tourna-ment’s disciplinary committee ruled in favour of Yebo Yes and the first prizes were presented to Yebo Yes during the ceremony.

Tshakhuma Shooting Stars won the U/17 cate-gory. The champions in each youth category were presented with soccer kit, training bibs and soccer balls during the ceremony.

Four teams affiliated to the MMK Administrators League, Tshakhuma RO United, Tshakhuma Na Ndilani, Maweja Takers and KK Revolution, took part in the tournament. The Makhado Local Foot-ball Association teams which took part in the tour-nament are Tshakhuma Peace Lovers, Tshakhuma Shooting Stars, Yebo Yes and Tshakhuma Na Ndilani.

The tournament was organized by a non-profit organization, Mavu Sports Development, and funded by the Vhembe District Municipality and the Royal Netherlands Embassy.

The Makhado municipality has improved its audit outcome and has moved one step closer towards receiving a clean audit.

The auditor general’s report for the local munic-ipality had improved to a qualified audit opinion in 2012/2013. This ended a period of several years during which Makhado received disclaimers and adverse opinions from the Auditor General (AG).

In the 2013/14 financial year, the outcome moved to a financially unqualified audit opinion, but not yet to the clean audit that the municipality was hoping to achieve. The outcome means that the municipality’s audited financial statements contain no material misstatements.

The mayor, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, said during the final council meeting last year (Decem-ber 15) that the outcome proved that the institution was in good hands. “We are able to account for every single cent in the municipality,” he said.

Mr Gerald Odendaal from the AG’s office in Limpopo told the municipal council to maintain the status they had achieved as they strived towards achieving a clean audit. “You need to understand what you can do as a municipality to maintain the status and also what needs to be done in order to improve,” he said.

Mr Odendaal added that the municipality should address all the problems of the previous financial years. “We need to address all the issues that have

not yet been addressed,” he said.

The municipal man-ager, Mr Isaac Mut-shinyali, added that the municipality was motivated to improve on its status. “The insti-tution is well led by the mayor, his executive committee and coun-cillors. This also means that our committees are doing the best oversight work,” he said.

Photographed after the council meeting are members of the audit committee, municipal executive members, some of the municipal officials, the mayor, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi and the manager, Mr Isaac Mutshinyali.

Tshakhuma robbery case postponed to MarchThree men and one woman, who are all accused of a rob-bery which allegedly took place at a house in Tshakhu-ma-Luvhalani on 3 October 2012, recently appeared in the Sibasa Regional Court.

A witness from a cellphone service provider gave testimony to prove that there was tele-phonic communication between three of the accused, Fred-dy Mulovhedzi (55), Lufuno Mavhunge (29) and Vhulahani Ndou (40) on the night of the robbery. The court postponed

the case to 9 March 2015. Mu-lovhedzi, Fulufhelo Mulovhedzi (22), Mavhunge and Ms Vhu-lahani Ndou stand accused of robbing R28 000 from the local stokvel’s treasurer, Mrs Joyce Mukwevho, at her home in the night. This case followed after Mukwevho and her daughter Aluwani were awakened by men who assaulted them with an iron bar, demanding money from them. The two ladies eventually handed the thieves R28 000, which reportedly belonged to the local stokvel. Mukwevho

and her daughter were seriously injured during the robbery, and Mukwevho was consequently hospitalised for six days.

Fulufhelo Mulovhedzi was implicated in the case after he was found in possession of a mobile phone, which he claimed to have received from his father, Freddy Mulovhedzi.

All the accused are out on R1 000 bail each, except Mulo-vhedzi (Snr). At the time of his arrest, he was on parole, after serving more than 10 years in jail for a similar crime.

Former correctional services boss buriedThe former regional commissioner for cor-rectional services in Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West Region (LMN), Chief Watson “Dzudzanyani” Tshivhase, was described as a strategic thinker, brilliant visionary and one of the Tshivhase royal family’s great intellectuals.

Tshivhase (67), who also served as prison direc-tor for the Kutama-Sinthumule Maximum Security Prison died on 24 December after a long illness, and was buried at the Mianzwi sacred burial site (Zwiendeulu) on Saturday.

“He filled big shoes and left deep tracks in the LMN region and he generously shared his knowl-edge, his expertise and his skills with officials from all ranks. Sorrow fills our hearts at this sad event,” said the deputy regional commissioner for LMN, Ms Ruth Letsoalo.

Letsoalo added that Tshivhase was living proof of how fine a leader could be, because he showed he was good boss to the people under his command.

Tshikona dancing, which is danced when a Vhavenda chief is installed or buried, was part of the funeral proceedings.

Family spokesperson Mr Lambani Tshivhase said that Dzudzanyani Tshivhase joined the prison services in 1972 after being arrested several times for violating the group areas act, which controlled where black people could work and stay during the apartheid era.

Tshivhase obtain number of degrees from the University of Venda and a masters degree from the University of Pretoria.

He majored in international politics and his thesis for his masters degree dealt with the role of the United Nations in the decolonization process of Namibia and the implementation of Security Council resolution 435.

The focus on international politics and communi-cations saw Tshivhase become a regular commen-tator on PhalaPhala FM, analyzing international political developments.

He also became a part-time lecturer in Public Administration and Local Government Adminis-tration at the University of Venda. Tshivhase was appointed and inaugurated as chief of Mianzwi village in 2002.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline Tshivhase, six children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Elderly people from Dididi received groceries as Christmas gifts from the children of the Living Gospel World Mission Primary School at Tshilivho at the end of last year. School children dressed in their uniforms presented the gifts to the elderly. The coordinator of the project, Ms Christina Mlauzi, said they started the project as an attempt to teach the young ones the spirit of giving from a young age.

Limpopo safest province in SA

“SA government treats us with humanity” - Eglone

Limpopo is the safest province to live in in South Africa.

This is according to a recent study by the South African Institute of Race Relations (SAIRR). The study measured crime rankings according to statistics on murder, robbery and assault.

Furthermore, the study has shown that Gauteng is the best province, overall, to live in, while the Western Cape is the most dangerous.

Even though the Western Cape fared badly when it came to protecting its residents from harm, unlike Lim-popo, the province came out on top in terms of health, service delivery, and social well-being.

Limpopo was found lacking in the rankings for economic development,

social well-being, health, education and service delivery.

Out of a possible score of a 100, Limpopo was awarded 48 for its economic situation, 34 for social well-being, 50 for health, 38 for education and 54 for service delivery.

The report’s author, Thuthukani Ndebele, said that the report ranked Gauteng as the overall best province, followed by the Western Cape, Lim-popo, Mpumalanga, the Free State, the North West and the Northern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and the East-ern Cape.

The Eastern Cape performed the worst when it came to service de-livery, measured by factors such as access to piped water and refuse removal.

The leader of the Zimbabwean community in Limpopo, Mr Gift Eglone, said that they were look-ing forward to a good New Year in which crime and fights between South Africans and foreigners would be a thing of the past.

Eglone was reflecting on the events which happened in 2014, where Zimbabweans who were suspected of certain crimes were either banished from certain communities or mur-dered during incidents of mob justice.

There were several incidents of stabbing and murders in the Makhado Municipality area and around Lim-popo, which transpired during the course of 2014.

Eglone believes that most of them could have been prevented, had there been cooperation among all stakeholders. “The re-cent case of mob justice in Tshikota, where the 20-year-old Knowledge Zukwa was killed, after he was suspected of certain crimes, would also have been prevent-ed,” he said. “But we are sure that, following recent developments of engaging into strategic partnership between communities and the police, we will be able to handle this much better in future. We are look-ing forward to a peace-ful and violence-free 2015.”

He pleaded with all Zimbabweans in South Africa to continue to

live in peace and harmony with local citizens. “Let’s not bring a knot of discord within the communities we are living and make other people’s lives unpleasant,” he said. “Further-more, let’s be law-abiding residents and citizens.” He then thanked the Minister of Home Affairs, Mr Ma-lusi Gigaba, for making it possible for Zimbabweans to travel back during this festive season and also for facilitating the Zimbabwe Spe-cial Permits (ZSP) programme. “The South African government has shown us humanity and brotherly love by coming up with the ZSP programme, because a lot of our people had an uncertain future in South Africa,” Eglone said. “Therefore we will be forever grateful and indebted to this true African government.”

The Ndlovu family from Bulawayo in Zimbabwe paid a visit to the Mahamba family at Khubvi on Monday. The purpose of the visit was to finalize the wedding arrangements of Tod Ndlovu and Muimeleli Mahamba. This photograph was taken shortly after the event.

The leader of the Zimbabwean community in Limpopo, Mr Gift Eglone, says it is always possible to have good relations among Zimbabweans and South Africans in the country.

The Makhado municipal library will be tempo-rarily closed until further notice.

According to municipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi, maintenance workers are at present attend-ing to several leaks in the library. He expressed the hope that the work will be finished within a month and said that the public will be notified when the library will be fully operational.

Bobodi asked the public, however, to bring the library books that are at present in their possession back to the library as soon as possible. Although the library is closed, staff will be available from 07:00 to 16:00 on weekdays to assist the public.

While Mayor David Mutavathsindi of Makhado earlier announced his serious

intention to use several hundreds of thousands of rands of the local taxpayers’ money to change street names in Louis Trichardt, the entire Tshikota and most of the village in the Makhado Municipality are as yet without a single street name sign.

This poses the obvious question: Wouldn’t it be more positive, helpful and uplifting for our people to bless Tshikota and other villages’ residents with a helpful pride of identity by also displaying their street names?

The no-name streets in Tshikota make it diffi-cult for people to direct others to find and to visit their homes, their businesses, their school and their churches. The no-name streets also make it difficult for the municipality to be directed to the dire need for upkeep and even the building of neglected streets in Tshikota.

- Francis van der Merwe, Louis Trichardt

A no-name street has the tendency to deteriorate into a no-go stray alley.

With learners waiting for their matric results, some

crooks are strategising how to rip off parents and steal their hard-earned cash.

Most learners wish to study far away from their homes or places of origin - something not bad at all for exploring the world. But be warned: that there are crooks who target those who fail to get admission at acknowledged higher learning institutions.

Let me use this opportunity to advise learners and parents to verify this before making any decision. Go to Umalusi, Department of Educa-tion and the relevant SETA or any

other authorised qualifications bod-ies’ websites to check the accredi-tation status of the institution where the student wishes to enrol. Check the status and qualifications that the institution is eligible to offer.

After doing an analysis of this, then you can make a well-informed decision.

So many people have lost their last cent by paying tuition fees to in-stitutions that are not recognised by education bodies. Some institutions offer certain qualifications that they are not registered to offer whilst others are not accredited at all.

It is also important to check the qualifications of the lecturers to

avoid being misled by non-experts. It is the legal obligation of both learners and parents to verify all critical information before making any decisions to avoid regretting the consequences of ignorance. It is painful seeing some people carrying useless qualifications that can dis-advantage them in the job-hunting process.

Remember to consult the Department of Higher Education for further assistance in case you need some necessary information. The department is the custodian of qualifications and they can answer all relevant questions that maybe helpful to those who are in need.

Education is precious and society at large has a pivotal role to play in exposing all fly-by-night institu-tions.

The proverb “your children are my children” should guide us in building a prosperous society. In case someone knows about any fly-by-night institutions, just alert the public. We can’t shield the perpetrators and blame the police in everything because organised crime is a societal problem that needs us to root it out.

I wish all the learners good a future in their education journey.

- Rofhiwa “Mabizana” Phaswana.

First observation evening for SAC

Home Affairs blitz on fake passports

An HIV/Aids awareness campaign was held at the Rhulani refugee camp near Malamulele in December. It was announced that a mobile clinic will visit the camp regularly and the MEC for Health, Mr Ishmael Kgetjepe, urged the residents to make use of the services of the mobile clinic. In our photo, MEC Kgetjepe and the executive mayor of Vhembe, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe (far left), hand over food parcels to the refugees, while Ms Emily Khoza and Mr Thomas Milano (both from the camp) and Cllr Kutala Maholwane look on. Photo: Silas Nduvheni.

The Soutpansberg Astronomy Club’s (SAC) first stargazing evening of the year will be held on Saturday, 24 January, from 19:00 onwards.

On the agenda will be the cres-cent moon and the planets Venus and Mars setting in the west, with Jupiter rising in the east.

Xmas comet C/2014 Q2 Lovejoy will be 30º above the north-western horizon and will still be visible from the southern hemisphere.

Observers expect the comet to increase in brightness or at least remain around magnitude +5 during the month and will

therefore still be a naked-eye apparition from a reasonably dark sky site, as well as an easy binocular and telescope target.

For more information on the SAC and its activities, contact Kos Coronaios at 079 148 4934 or via email at [email protected]

The Department of Home Affairs has launched a crack-down on illegal South African passport holders intending to enter or leave the country through the Beit Bridge bor-der post.

Limpopo Mirror has estab-lished that the operation, which started on New Year’s Day, mainly targets Zimbabweans who are in possession of South African travel documents after having allegedly acquired na-tional IDs fraudulently.

An official at the Home Af-fairs department at Beit Bridge, who declined to be named, confirmed the ongoing blitz to Limpopo Mirror.

“There is nothing new about the exercise; it is a just routine operation that Home Affairs con-ducts every year, especially after the festive season, to flush out foreigners who fraudulently ac-quired South African passports. There is a special team which was deployed to Beit Bridge by our head office to conduct the exercise,” said the official.

Some Zimbabweans using fraudulently acquired South African passports were turned away on Sunday and their travel documents were also seized.

All South African passport holders entering the country from Zimbabwe are reportedly going through a rigorous process of interrogation on presenting their documents to immigration officials.

One of the affected Zimbab-weans using a South African passport said that when he ar-

rived at the immigration count-ers, a female official started questioning him.

“She then took my passport and gave me a form to complete, saying she doubted whether I was a genuine South African. I was ordered to go back to Zimbabwe.”

Usually during this time of the year, Beit Bridge Border Post handles a huge volume of south-bound traffic and an increase in the number of travellers entering South Africa from Zimbabwe. Most of the travellers are Zim-babweans based in South Africa, who will be returning to work after spending the Christmas hol-iday at home with their families.

A senior Zimbabwean immi-gration officer at Beit Bridge also confirmed the latest de-velopment, saying a number of Zimbabwean using South Afri-ca passports were repossessed of their travel documents and turned away.

“We received reports that some Zimbabweans using fraud-ulently acquired South African passports were turned away by SA Home Affairs officials and their passports were also seized, while some were given forms to complete, pending further investigations into the authen-ticity of their citizenship,” said the official.

Limpopo Mirror also estab-lished that some Zimbabweans were now reluctant to present their SA passports to Home Af-fairs officials and are allegedly opting to either bribe police manning the exit gate or use un-

designated entry points along the Limpopo River to avoid trouble.

The head of immigration ser-vices at Beit Bridge (Zimbabwe), Mr Notius Tarisai, said they had been recording a sharp increase in the number of travellers on the departure side, compared to the entry section, since last week.

He also attributed the increase to the last-hour rush by some Zimbabweans who were trying to beat the 31 December deadline for the application of permits under the new Zimbabwe Special Permits (ZPS) programme. ZPS replaced the old Dispensation for Zimbabwean Permits (DZP), which started in May 2009 and expired on 31 December last year.

Under the DZP, Zimbabwean permit holders were allowed to re-apply for the new ZPS permits as long as they had a valid pass-port, evidence of employment, business or accredited study and a clean criminal record.

South Africa suspended the deportation of undocumented Zimbabweans in May 2009 and later introduced a special dispen-sation, during which Zimbabwe-ans were given an opportunity to regularise their stay in South Africa by applying for work, business and study permits.

It is estimated that there are about two million Zimbabweans living in South Africa.

Out of about 245 000 Zim-babweans who were eligible to apply for permits under ZPS, 207 802 met the deadline and the re-maining 37 198 face deportation.

Honour for former principal KoneThe community of Tshituni in Nzhelele and its strategic development partners have recently honoured its former school principal, Mr Samuel Humbelani Kone (81), for his educational contribution in the village.

The community and the Ma-ranikwe Primary School alumni said that they were proud to have a wonderful and voluntary elder who continued to serve the com-munity with pride, even after his retirement from teaching.

The Tshituni development committee’s leadership repre-sentative, Dr Tshililo Mbadaliga, said it was really an honour for Kone’s former learners to host a event where they celebrated his work and dedication in educating them.

“He did all his work without expecting any financial rewards,” Mbadaliga said. “We award-

ed him a golden trophy, some clothes and a Bible for his selfless efforts to teach the village. Those tokens of appreciation meant a lot from our side as his products.”

After his retirement, Kone was involved in community work services, where he served as chairperson in different struc-tures such as Nzhelele Parish of the Lutheran Chruch and Vhu-laudzi Secondary School (for two terms). He was also involved in farming and was chairperson for the external ploughing fields where small farmers ploughed mealies and other vegetables for subsistence.

In all his chairmanship in different institutions, he was hailed as a father figure who wanted all his children to live in peace and harmony while they worked hard for themselves. “U shumela vhathu ndi zwa ndeme (It is always important to work

for one’s community),” he said. “In all the years I served as a school principal and chairman, I knew that there was no bigger purpose for a man’s life than to

glorify God.”The former school principal, Mr Samuel Humbelani Kone (81).

The captain of Seven United Brothers, Vhutshilo Netshivhazwaulu, receives his team’s cheque from the organizer, Mr Takalani Prince Rabali.

Rabali FC, or Magaraba, are still celebrating after being crowned the champions of the Taki’s Soccer Challenge at the Rabali Stadium last Saturday.

Magaraba, who beat Seven United Brothers in the fi nal, took home R7 000, a soccer kit, gold medals and a fl oating trophy.

The prize-giving ceremony was held at the sta-dium shortly after the fi nal.

Magaraba’s way to the fi nal went via Nzhelele United Stars, whom they beat 4-1 in the semifi nal at the same venue earlier that day. Seven United Brothers were presented with a cash prize of R4 000, silver medals and a soccer kit.

Seven United Brothers beat Matanda Seven Stars 5-4 in the semifi nal stage to secure a place in the fi nal. The winner was determined through penalty shoot-out after a 2-2 full-time stalemate. The teams that were booted out of the tournament in the semifi nal stage, Matanda Seven Stars and Nzhelele United Stars, were each presented with R2 000 and a soccer kit.

Twenty teams affi liated to the Makhado Local Football Association and the MMK Administrators League took part in the tournament. According to one of the organizers of the tournament, Mr Taka-lani Rabali, Altech, Daytona Group and Rabali Transport sponsored the tournament. He added that the children from the Rabali Resource Centre would benefi t from the income that was raised during the tournament. He further revealed that the tournament will be an annual event, with the sponsorship increasing from time to time.

RO United teach Tshakhuma Na Ndilani a lessonTshakhuma RO United proved all their critics wrong by beating their neighbours, Tshakhuma Na Ndilani FC, 2-0 in the fi nal of the Tshakhuma Holiday Tournament at the Tshakhuma Tshiemuemu grounds on Sunday.

Tshakhuma Na Ndilani, or TNT as they are widely known, enjoyed ball possession for the better part of the fi rst half, but it was diffi cult for them to fi nd their way through the defence of United.

The TNT strikers, Rofhiwa “Dan-ger” Netshiungani and Ndamulelo Mukwevho, could not live up to the fans’ expectations as they were tightly marked. The United captain, Rendani Mukomafhedzi, was the fi rst player to go into the referee’s book. He was lucky to escape with yellow after tackling Rolivhuwa Mukwevho from behind in the 18th minute.

United opened their account in the 24th minute. Rinae Madzhuta

defl ected the ball into the net after a square pass from Thivhulawi Silima. TNT did not stop fi ghting, even after conceding a silly goal. They came close to scoring in the 34th minute. Their captain, Nndwamato Miriri, received a neat pass from Ndivhuwo Lishivha and lost possession at the edge of the box.

The wheel of fortune turned against TNT again seven minutes before the break. They were awarded a free kick just outside the box. The players of United were not happy with the ref-eree’s decision to award them a free kick. They argued that the incident happened within the box and that the referee should have awarded them a penalty instead.

The situation came back to normal after the referee warned Khathutshelo Mukomafhedzi with a card for a continued argument. Mukomafhedzi scored from the free kick to bring the half-time score to 2-0. Heavy

rain started to fall in the area towards the end of the game. The offi cials of TNT pleaded with the match offi cials to stop the game, saying the pitch was slippery and causing danger to their players. The referee adhered to the call and blew the fi nal whistle 15 minutes before the actual time.

The captain of Magaraba, Takalani Maganya, receives his team’s trophy from the organizer, Mr Takalani Prince Rabali.

During the ceremony that took place at the Benny’s Care Hall, the president of the Makhado LFA, Mr Joseph Maphaha, appealed to the people to refrain from assaulting match officials. He also reiterated the fact that it was bad for the teams to win matches through the bribing of officials. He appealed to the management committee of the organization to liaise with the local football asso-ciation to assist development teams and praised the organisers for their good work in connection with development in the area.

One of the sponsors, Attorney Desmond Mpha-phuli, stated that they would continue sponsoring the football association, saying it was part of their mission. “It is our obligation to ensure that the society in which we are living is healthy, and sponsoring football is a step in the right direction.”

The chairperson of Sinku Community Sport Development, Mr Scara Tshigomana, praised the sponsors for their decision to sponsor football. “I’m very proud that we have grown young people of real quality,” he said. He stated that he was convinced that the league would produce stars who would receive international recognition soon. He indicated that football had risen to be the world’s number one

sport in terms of participation and spectatorship. The champions, Baroka FC, went home with

R10 000, a floating trophy, new soccer kit and gold medals, while the runners-up, Madombidzha Western Stars, collected R6 000, silver medals and new soccer kit. R3 000, a new soccer kit and bronze medals went to Muraleni United, who ended in third position.

Rabali FC, alias Magaraba, were crowned the 2014 Taki’s Soccer Chal-lenge champions at the packed Rabali Stadium on Saturday.

Magaraba beat Nzhelele United Stars 4-1 in the semifinal, before crushing Seven United Brothers 3-1 in the final.

Their game against United Brothers was a see-saw battle. Both sides managed to create some scoring chances in the open-ing minutes, but it was Magaraba who managed to convert one before the teams adjourned for the half-time break. Striker Takalani Maganya beat the keeper with a volley in the 27th minute after duel moves

with Richard Lishivha just outside the box. The ball hit the crossbar and bounced across the goal line.

Mashudu Sikhwari of Magaraba was warned with a card for retaliation towards the end of the first half.

United Brothers came back strongly in the last half, taking advantage of the fact that most Magaraba players were not fit for the game.

Realizing that Seven United Brothers were all over them, Magaraba abandoned their positions and packed themselves at the back, thereby relying on counter-at-tacks. They increased the margin in the

68th minute. Richard Lishivha scored with a bicycle kick, following a square pass from Peter Sithagu.

Magaraba replaced Lutendo Mmboyi with Rudzani Ramudzuli two minutes later.

United Brothers used all their substitu-tion chances as part of their many ways to unsettle the opponents’ defence. They reduced one through Brian Mavhungu. He beat the Magaraba keeper, Amon Phophi, with a close-range volley. United Brothers lost hope after Thomas Muthathedzwa scored an own goal nine minutes before the final whistle.
