Dearest Parishioners,

Peace in the Lord. October is Respect Life Month. In my forty years first as a seminarian, then a religious brother, and finally a priest, I have seen that to respect life is not just a theme, but a real-life situation taking place in the heart of families and individuals. I and the organizations to which I have belonged have walked with people facing abortion, caring for an infirmed or disabled family member, struggling with a loved one suffering addiction, or are straining to break the chains of abuse at home. Families facing such struggles need to know that they are not alone. There are resources to help them, whether they come from the parish or outside the parish. Our parish has connected with Good Counsel Homes (https://www.goodcounselhomes.org/) and Cornerstone Women’s Resource Centers in Salem County (https://cornerstonewrc.org/) to help pregnant women. The Diocese of Camden offers resources for the infirmed and disabled through Vitality Catholic Healthcare Services (https://vitality.camdendiocese.org/contact-us/). For those suffering from an addiction, there is the Catholic Charities Addictions Healing Helpline: 1-856-342-4057 – 24 hours. Leave a message and receive a callback within 24 hours during the week, Monday through Friday. Our parish has worked with Drogadictos Anónimos, A.C. which offers free services in English and Spanish and has a free in-house 90-day program (https://www.daamerica.org/ or call 1-718-507-7459). Also, our clergy hears confessions at Seabrook House, a local addiction-recovery program. Finally, for families facing abuse, I have recommended people to the Catholic Charities office in Vineland or SERV (Services Empowering Rights of Victims) through the Center for Family Services (https://www.centerffs.org/serv or call the 24/7 hotline 1-866-295-SERV (7378)). These resources are not a magic answer, but a beginning point of hope and healing. People facing such difficult situations often need help in taking the first steps and in walking the journey.

During this year of Saint Joseph, the Church in the United States is offering him as a model of one who has protected and supported life through difficult situations:

“Despite the mysterious circumstances surrounding Mary’s pregnancy, St. Joseph took her into his home at the word of the angel. He guided their journey to Bethlehem, found shelter, and welcomed the infant Jesus as his son. When Herod threatened the life of the Christ Child, St. Joseph left his homeland behind and fled with Jesus and Mary to Egypt. Like St. Joseph, we are also called to care for those God has entrusted to us–especially vulnerable mothers and children” (Bishop Joseph F. Naumann). For more information on Pro-Life initiatives of the Catholic Church in the United States, go to https://www.respectlife.org/respect-life-month.

Fr. Matthew P.S. – Please cut out or print this article and keep it handy in case you face similar difficult situations.

Sharing of time, talent or treasure for the common good & the glory of God

“It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom

of God.” - MARK 10:25

Jesus uses tough language that we may not want to hear. But Stewards are all called to be generous with all of our gifts. Not just the ones we pick and choose, but all our gifts, and especially the one that means the most to us! That includes our time in prayer to God, our talent in participating in parish ministries, and our treasure supporting our local parish and other charities.

October 2-3, 2021 Offertory Collection: $12,767.00

Online Giving: $855.00 Chicken Barbecue Profit: $12,502.95

We thank everyone for supporting this fundraiser and community-building effort!

POPE FRANCIS FOOD PANTRY

Thank you to everyone who donated to the food pantry last weekend. We are grateful to you all. Our next donation drop off day is Saturday, October 9th from 8 AM to 11 AM at the food pantry, 64 North St, Bridgeton. The Bridgeton pantry will be open for distribution on Saturday, October 16th from 9 am to 11 am. The Port Norris pantry is open on Saturday, October 9th. For the upcoming holidays we would appreciate donations of gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce. The pantry is always in need of cereal, peanut butter, pasta, sauce, canned meals, canned meat, canned vegetables, canned beans, sides, and canned fruit. Thank you.

Having possessions is an illusion. In today’s gospel Jesus told the young man to give up his need to control and put his trust in God. He couldn’t let go! In families our need to control destroys relationships. We can lead, teach and encourage, but we can’t control anyone but ourselves.

LA ESQUINA DEL PASTOR

Estimados Feligreses,

VERY IMPORTANT Any parishioner who wishes to get married, whether in our parish or outside our parish, should contact one of our priests or deacons to see that the proper protocols for marriage preparation are being followed. Ideally, they should contact the priest or deacon a year ahead of time. Thank you for your cooperation and God bless you.
