UN peacekeepers are often called “Blue Berets” or “Blue Helmets” because they wear either berets or helmets in light blue colour.

UN peacekeeping force consists of:

•85.000serving troops and military observers,•52.333 international civilian personnel,•13.056 police personnel,•11.709 local civilian staff,•2.025 UN volunteers

•International forces are controlled by the United Nations Organization. But the UN organization does not have its own military force, it depends on contributions from Member States. Thus, there are people of different nationalities, from different countries, Russia included.

•Peacekeeping refers to activities that tend to create conditions that favour lasting peace in countries torn by conflicts.

UN peacekeeping forces have two important departments:

•Department of Field Support (DFS):

•Departments of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO):

disarming local soldiers

observing the area of the conflict

helping refugees return to their homes

supporting and expertising in the area of personnel

finance and budget

communications, information technology, logistics

•Africa (Angola, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Liberia, Somalia, Sudan, Congo),•Americas (the Dominican Republic, Haiti, El Salvador, Guatemala),•Asia and the Pacific (Cambodia, Afghanistan and Pakistan, Tajikistan, West New Guinea),•Europe (Croatia, Herzegovina, Georgia),•Middle East (Iran-Iraq, Iraq-Kuwait, Syria).
