Cellular Respiration

Why is this process important to us as humans? Produces the energy for

living organisms to perform all necessary functions to maintain life.

Page 4: Thursday January 22 nd 2015 QOD - Identify the following reactions: 1.C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O + ATP 2.C 6 H 12 O 6 CO 2 + ATP + Alcohol

Cellular respiration occurs in two phases

• Cytoplasm – called glycolysis– Glucose splits into two 3 carbon molecules– A small amount of ATP is produced

• Mitochondria– Glucose is completely broken down– A large amount of ATP is produced– This step requires oxygen

Fermentation

• An alternative way to break down glucose and produce ATP.

• Occurs when there is no oxygen present– Example is during exercise– Lactic acid buildup in muscles

• Produces less ATP than cellular respiration

Fermentation

• Alcohol Fermentation is when yeast breaks down glucose and produces alcohol and carbon dioxide– Beer and wine production

– CO2 helps bread rise

Photosynthesis

Process by which a cell captures energy from sunlight and uses it to make food.

Carbon dioxide + water + sunlight = sugar + oxygen

Photosynthesis

• Happens in the chloroplast of plant cells

Why are plants green?

• Because of a pigment called chlorophyll

• Chlorophyll is the green pigment helps to capture the suns light.

• Chlorophyll absorbs all colors except green which is reflected.
