Trēhaus noun [tree-house]

Referring to a sustainable furniture company based in the small town of Ruawai, New Zealand.

Run by Michelle Lee Huertas, Trēhaus is a company based on the principles of slow design and environmentally, socially and financially sustainable products which enhance spaces with simplicity and

texture. We hold true to mother nature being the ultimate designer – beauty, function and no waste.

Big believers in maintaining craft and traditional skills, Trēhaus incorporates these elements into modern pieces. Hand finishing and production is used where possible to enhance local skill retention and expansion. We are but beginners – some of the local women of the Kaipara put our knitting, spinning and weaving to shame. The hope is to continue to learn, grow and modernise these traditional methods while

still maintaining a modern, clean and relevant aesthetic.

We don’t believe sustainability is a fad. Being green isn’t a claim to fame – it’s just responsible.

We are a local business: we try to source the majority of our products and supplies as close to home as possible. Our materials are sourced in New Zealand, some are just down the road! Our products are also designed and made in New Zealand.

No mail: We will email you our entire catalogue, specifications, letters, invoices, personal diaries and the kitchen sink, but we’ll leave the trees standing.

We design out waste: Taking waste into account from stage one means we can reduce our waste as much as possible, this means good design and precision in production.

Reducing our shipping: We have started a mission with our debut range, to design items that can be flat packed to reduce materials in packaging, and space and weight in shipping.

We design for longevity, many many hours go into designing our products so that you can make them your own through personalisation and ability to update with new accessories, we hope that they become part of the family and stay with you forever, but if you just need a new look you can trade in your Trēhaus products for a discount on a new product! Our products are also made from natural materials which are biodegradable.

Zero paper office: This is a hard one, we’re not there yet, designers like the sketch but we make up our own notebooks to reuse old paper and we keep our notebooks because you never know where a good idea is hiding (so it’s not wasted). Others send us paper, but we opt out of paper statements, invoices or receipts wherever possible.

Healthy home principles: Whether you’re purchasing a product for your home or for your business it is important to us that our products be completely safe for your space. We only make things we’d have in our own homes which means no VOC’s where possible, natural finishes, no toxic chemicals and natural materials.
