MEN’S TENNIS CSU will take a break from competition this week, and prepare for the ITA Mid-west Regional, which begins on Thursday, October 18. This past weekend the Vikings competed at the Ball State Fall Invitational, bring-ing home a doubles title for the third straight weekend. The Viking duo of Matt Ford and Matt Kuelker claimed the championship in the Flight B Doubles draw following a 4-0 weekend, which included wins over Louisville and Marquette. Jorg van der Vloet had a strong weekend in singles play for CSU, reaching the championship match of the Flight A Consolation bracket after picking up three wins at the invite. Entering the ITA Midwest Regional, Joe VanMeter has a team-best 7-4 singles record, while Ford is close behind with a 6-3 mark and Kuelker and Ali Shabib stand at 5-4.

WOMEN’S TENNIS The Vikings will take a week off from competition this weekend, and will return to the courts on Friday, Oct. 5 at the Michigan State Invitational. The MSU Invite will be the final fall tournament for CSU before the Vikings take part in the ITA Midwest Regional. Kara Sherwood and Ellen Folkers each won their re-spective singles flights at the BGSU Invitational last weekend, posting 3-0 records in singles play. Sherwood won the title in the Flight 4 draw, while Folkers picked up her championship in the Flight 5 bracket. The duo also teamed up to play No. 2 doubles for the Vikings, reaching the championship match be-fore losing their first contest. Folkers and Sherwood lead the Vikings with four wins each on the young season, while they are one of two Viking doubles teams to have two wins on the year – joined by Folkers and Mengdi Liu.

MEN’S SOCCER Cleveland State returns home for just the second time this season when the Vikings host Belmont on Wednesday (Oct. 3) at 2:00 p.m. at Krenzler Field. CSU is 4-5-1 on the season and 0-1 in Horizon League play. The Vikings went 0-1-1 last week, earning a 0-0 draw at Cincinnati on Sept. 26 before falling at Wisconsin, 2-1, on Sept. 29. Brad Stuver made six saves to earn his fourth shutout of the season at Cincinnati. At Wisconsin, the Vikings fell behind 2-0 at the half. The Vikings got a goal in the 86th minute from Aaron Adkins, but could not get the game-tying goal. Adkins now leads the team with three goals and is tied with Zach Ellis-Hayden for the team lead with six points.

WOMEN’S GOLF CSU is out of action until Oct. 8-9 when the Vikings compete at the Butler Bulldog Invitational. CSU was last in action when the Vikings finished second at the CSU Invita-tional at Pine Hills G.C. on Sept. 24-25. Ariel Sparrow tied the 36-hole school-record with rounds of 73-79 (152) to finish second, while Madeline Kaminski was fourth at 155 (80-75).

CROSS COUNTRY CSU will travel south this weekend to Orlando, Fla. to compete in the Walt Disney World Classic. The collegiate women’s 5K race is slated for an 8:30 a.m. start, and will take place at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. Last weekend the Vikings were one of over 40 schools to participate in the All-Ohio Championship, finishing sev-enth out of the Division I schools. Tori Holt once again paced the Vikings, crossing the finishing line in 19:26, her fourth straight sub 20-minute 5K this season.

MEN’S GOLF The Vikings are back in action next Monday and Tues-day (Oct. 1-2) when CSU hosts its own invitational at Canter-bury G.C. It was CSU’s first tournament title since the 2011 Horizon League Championship.

The MSU Invite will begin on Friday (Oct. 5) and run through Sunday (Oct. 7). Entering the week, freshman Ellen Folkers leads CSU with a 5-1 singles record, while junior Kara Sherwood stands at 4-2.
