Goodwill was established in 1902 by the Rev.

Edgar J. Helms in Boston, Massachusetts.

The Rev. Helms did missionary work in the

slums of Boston in the early 1900s. People

came to his church seeking help with food

and clothing. The Rev. Helms used burlap

sacks to collect clothing and

household goods from the

wealthiest districts in Boston.

He hired the poor and needy to

mend and repair the used goods

he collected. The refurbished

items were resold; the people

were given meaningful work

and were paid from the sale of

the donated goods.

This concept swept the country and

Goodwill Industries organizations were

established across the United States.

In 1957, Goodwill Industries of Middle

Tennessee was established. We employ

more than 2,100 people. Our territory

includes 48 counties in middle and west

Tennessee. We operate 36 retail stores,

3

including one outlet store, more than 80

donation sites and 28 Goodwill Career

Solutions offices. Eighty-nine percent of

our employees were hired in connection

with our mission, and we are one of

Tennessee’s largest employers of people

with disabilities. Our free services

are available to anyone needing

assistance finding a job.

We are affiliated with Goodwill

Industries International in

Rockville, Md., and operate

independently with our own

governing board of directors.

Goodwill accepts gently used

items that donors no longer want,

need or use. Those items are sold either in

our retail stores or online at onlinegoodwill.

com. Revenue from the sale of goods helps

fund our job training services and programs

powered by Goodwill Career Solutions.

Goodwill believes in “giving a hand up, not

a handout.”

Transitional Employment ServicesTransitional employment services assist people with documented medical, developmental and/or emotional disabilities to transition into the world of work. Individuals participate in intensive job readiness services to learn skills needed to enter into employment at Goodwill or with an outside employer.

Youth ProgramsGoodwill Career Solutions offers several employment and training programs for including the Summer Work Program, Summer Job Readiness and Summer Integration. Youth Building Goodwill is a year-round program for out-of-school young adults ages 17-25 who need additional education, vocational training and assistance in preparing for living independently and working in the community.

Goodwill CaresGoodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee, Inc. established a program to assist individuals and families who have experienced a recent hardship; such as, layoffs, homelessness, domestic violence, house fires, natural disasters or foster care situations. We provide Goodwill gift cards to those in need of clothing, furniture and/or household items. Each individual requesting assistance through Goodwill Cares must provide a letter of referral from a supporting agency. In 2015, we issued more than 900 gift cards to people in need.

Wheels-to-WorkTransportation to work is a major barrier to employment for many people. The Wheels-to-Work Program was established to help Goodwill employees or clients with a transportation barrier. The program gives donated vehicles to qualified Goodwill clients or employees who need them to get to work and cannot afford to buy a car. We have given away nine vehicles through the program since its inception in 2013.
