WEEKLY CITY NEWS Surf Ryder Gift Card Since the Surf Ryder started operating in August, hundreds of children, families and baby-boomers have been enjoying the thrills of surfing right here in Ryde. The Surf Ryder is as close to the real thing as you can get. It provides endless fun and is a great way to learn without fear of being hurt in a wipe out. Just in time for Christmas, you can now buy a Surf Ryder gift card with up to 10 visits on one card. This is an ideal gift for your family or an individual. See below for full details. Are you ready for summer? On a more serious note, while summer is generally associated with good times and outdoor living, it’s also the time we are most at risk from sun exposure, road accidents, bushfires and the effects of too much alcohol. Council’s community safety unit has compiled information on Sun & Heat, Water Safety and Bushfires all on one site www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/summersafety so you can access the information you need with just one or two clicks. The site contains commonsense guidelines plus links to external organisations. Here’s a preview: Survive the Sun & Heat Be prepared for extreme heat and sun exposure - you can dehydrate and be affected by harmful UV levels faster than you may think. Stay Safe in the Water Be prepared for hazards in and around the beach, river or pool and always supervise children - they can drown in just 5cm of water. Bushfires – Prepare, Act, Survive Be prepared for bushfire and ember attacks - you don’t have to live right near the bush to be at risk. And remember, NEVER leave children or pets alone in the car. On a typical 30º summer’s day, the temperature inside a parked car can rise to 70ºC very quickly. Christmas House Lights Showcase It’s not too late to register at our first Christmas House Lights Showcase at www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/christmas to join with other Ryde households who decorate their houses, front yards and verandahs with that special festive cheer.
