Reading Strategy in Context
Identifying Cause and Effect
Identifying cause-and-effect relationships in a text helps you focus
on two important elements of comprehension: what happens and
why it happened. Expressions such as "because," "as a result," and
"be caused by" are signals that show cause-and-effect relationships.
Read the following paragraph and find out which words and
phrases help you understand the relationship between cause and
effect better.
We can't live without getting stressed or having anxiety.
However, when you worry about something for a long time, your
body can be affected. You might begin to feel tired and have
headaches more often. As a result, your body becomes weaker.
Some research suggests that a high level of stress also has a
negative effect on your brain. It makes you lose focus, and keeps
you from concentrating on your studies.
[예시답안]
be affected / As a result / has a negative effect on
NOTE

Jumping Rope is Great Exercise
I think jumping rope is great exercise in many ways. At first, I
just started doing it to lose weight. However, after doing it every
day for two weeks, I've found that there are many other
advantages to jumping rope. First of all, it is one of the simplest
exercises you can do. The only thing you need is a jump rope,
which is inexpensive and easy to carry. The second reason is that
jumping rope helps strengthen heart muscles, which bring blood
and oxygen to your whole body. Therefore, it can even help your
brain learn better. Lastly, since it helps your sense of rhythm and
timing, you won't get bored of doing it. I'm sure that once you
start jumping rope, you'll gain more happiness than you'll lose
weight!

If you're like most people, you probably don't exercise enough. Of course, you know that exercise is
good for your body. It can make you strong and healthy and help you [keep/kept]1) slim as well.
You may even know that exercise can improve your mood [by/on]2) reducing depression and anxiety
and [help/helping]3) you [manage/managed]4) stress better. But you're a busy student and don't have
enough time to exercise, right?
But what if I told you [who/that]5) exercise isn't only good for your body? Studies have shown that
regular physical activity also benefits your brain. It [has scientifically proven/has been scientifically
proven]6) that active people have better performances on tests in areas such as decision-making
processes and problem solving. Here's why:
Exercise Keeps Your Brain Healthy
There's a saying that [go/goes]7) "What's good for the heart [is/are]8) good for the head." This
means that keeping our brain healthy [is/are]9) connected to good circulation. The brain is critically
dependent upon blood flow. It actually requires about 25% of all the blood [that pumps/that's
pumped]10) by the heart. When you exercise, your heart beats faster, [increasing/increased]11) the
amount of blood that [flow/flows]12) to your brain. This blood carries oxygen and other important
nutrients that your brain needs to function well. If your brain's oxygen level drops too low, you'll
have trouble [remember/remembering]13) things you learned in the past. You will also have trouble
[concentrate/concentrating]14) on the new things you are learning. Therefore, [by/in]15) exercising
regularly, you can improve your memory and do better in school.
The Effects of Exercise on the Brain
Scientific research has found that exercise can cause nerve cells [forming/to form]16) thick,
[interconnecting/interconnected]17) webs that make the brain [run/running]18) faster and more
efficiently. It has also shown that moderate regular exercise can stimulate the growth of new cells in
a part of the brain [calling/called]19) the hippocampus. This is one of the sections of your brain that
[is/are]20) responsible for memory. According [to/as]21) one study, [a/the]22) number of brain cells in
this part increased by about 30% in people [who/which]23) exercised on a regular basis. The study
also showed that their memory improved as well.
Easy Exercise for Your Brain
So what kind of exercise is good for our brain? You don't necessarily need to lift weights or run
on a treadmill until you're covered in sweat. Simple activities can effectively improve brain function
because they activate nerves that [help/helps]24) your brain wake up. Here [is/are]25) two of the
easiest ways to exercise for your brain.

1) [For/During]26) the day, [when/whenever]27) you have some free time, take a walk. Walking is a
particularly good way to keep your brain healthy because it increases blood circulation and the
amount of oxygen that [reach/reaches]28) your brain. That's [why/because]29) your leg muscles
won't take up extra oxygen like they would [during/while]30) other forms 0f exercise. Therefore,
as you walk, your blood is effectively supplied to your brain. Maybe this is [why/because]31)
walking can clear your head, [helping/helped]32) you think better.
2) Exercising doesn't have to take time away from studying. If you have a jump rope, you can
repeat vocabulary words with each jump. The rhythm and movement will actually make [it/them]33)
[easier/easily]34) to remember them later. If you don't have a jump rope, then play catch with a
friend. The two of you can ask and answer questions with each throw of the ball. [By/With]35)
adding these body movements to [learn/learning]36) activities, you change your state of mind and
allow your attention [to refresh/to be refreshed]37).
You Can Do It!
So how much exercise do you get each day? A little? A lot? None at all? [What/Whatever]38) your
answer is, you probably want to do better. However, you don't need to start exercising suddenly
[for/during]39) several hours each day. Just set small goals [what/that]40) you can easily achieve.
This way, you will feel successful and improve both your body and your brain.
How about [start/starting]41) with the goal of exercising at least 10 minutes a day? If you find that
even this is a hard goal to keep, try this: [Every/Next]42) time you get up to do something during
the day, take just 10 seconds to bend over and touch your toes. It takes just a little time, yet it
delivers a rush of oxygen to your brain. What could be easier than that?
You can exercise [most/almost]43) anywhere and at any time. Plus, you can have fun [doing/to do]44)
it! So why not [give/giving]45) it a try?
Here's an idea. When you finish [reading/to read]46) this passage, stand up and do ten quick star
jumps. A star jump is a form of exercise [which/in which]47) you jump in the air and stretch your
arms and legs in four different directions, [making/made]48) your body [look/looking]49) like a star.
Got it? Try it now!
Finished? Right now, you should be able to feel your heart [beat/beating]50) a little faster and the
blood [rush/rushing]51) through your body. That's a good thing! Your brain is now ready to
[work/working]52) hard again.
