A2 Media Studies Music Video Evaluation

Suzy Hannon

How does your media product challenge the forms and conventions of typical music videos?

The genre of the music featured in our music video in indie pop/britpop. The original video for the song and other music videos in this genre almost always feature the band in the video, so we decided that we wanted to apply this convention to our video as we had already come up with some creative ideas for scenes featuring the characters/band members. We chose the song Alright by Supergrass as it is a popular song that is associated with being a youth anthem and about having fun as a teenager, which is exactly what we wanted to convey in our video. The original music video features the 3 band members who were all male running around and cycling in various locations. We decided that we wanted to use this as inspiration, but instead we had 3 girls as the band members and we were doing typically 'boyish' things such as drinking and running around a park. We challenged the conventions in this way as females are not typically used as main characters in indie pop music videos.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

We decided to use a photo for the digipak that was also featured in the music video, so that there would be a relation between the two productions. We particularly chose these photos as in this scene of our music video all of the band members take turns to sing a part of the song, so we felt that this showed unity and close friendship and that is what the song and the music video is all about, and we thought this would make our target audience more interested in the video and the actual single. The font I chose to use is quite similar to the handwriting of a young person and the colours reflect what the main character/lead singer is wearing in the photos and the music video. I decided to make the magazine advert look slightly different to the digipak because I didnt want them to look exactly the same and have a boring look, so I used a different filter for the advert but kept the font the same as the digipak because I wanted to make it look like it was the bands logo.

We decided that for the digipak photos there would be no mode of a address as we wanted it to look as original as possible, but then we decided to use the convention of using direct mode of address for the magazine advert.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Our target audience for this music video was girls aged between 13 and 18. We chose this audience because we researched the typical target audience for pop music, which is girls aged 13-18, and decided that we were going to target them despite the fact that the song is classed as indie pop. I asked 10 different girls aged 13-18 if they had heard of the song Alright by Supergrass and if they liked it, to which they all replied yes saying that it was such a popular song and used frequently in television advertisements. I then asked them if they liked the music video and they said that they hadnt seen it. We took this into consideration and realised that we wanted to definitely use this song as it would give us an opportunity to show that modern girls are now able to do all the same things that boys do for fun.

We made a survey asking our target audience what their thoughts were about our music video in order to get some audience feedback (pictured)

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Before we started filming we made blogs on Blogger so that we could update with any work involving the music video we had done, including storyboards and locations that we had decided to use.

Then once we started filming we used a professional video camera but decided that it would be best to use a FlipCam instead as they are compact, high definition and would allow us to carry it around with us and be able to film any idea that we had come up with that we thought would be suitable for the video.

We then used a Canon 1000D digital camera to take photos for the ancillary tasks (digipak and magazine advert/poster) so that we would have high quality, high resolution photos.

To edit our video, we used Final Cut Pro. At first we found this software to be very challenging and difficult to use, but after using it a few times we learned how to use it swiftly and efficiently to piece together our music video.

To edit the photos we took for the ancillary tasks, I used Photoshop and added different filters. As I had previously used Photoshop for my AS project of creating a music magazine I was already familiar with how to add filters and manipulate the image I chose.
