Realism Adverts

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=litXW91UauE

Realism adverts are made to capture peoples attention and to show or prove something. In the Dove real beauty adverts, they have many different topics that women seem to complain or be insecure about and they try to explain to them that it is real beauty and that it makes them who they are.

In the Dove Real Beauty advert that I have linked on the far left, it is about women who do not like the way that they look or even little things about them that they would like to change. The advert is 6 minutes long and involves a forensic artist who draws women from their own description of themselves, the artist does not look at the women before he draws her, he listens to her through a live speaker and asks her questions as he is drawing to get a strong idea of what she is explaining. After that, the forensic artist gets a complete stranger to explain how the women looks and does the same thing. The final results show that strangers do not see as many imperfections as you see on yourself and that you shouldn’t worry about that because its not important.

Anti-Realism

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhIZ9Xgmpno

Anti realist adverts are basically the complete opposite of realism adverts. Anti-realism adverts do not always have a link or a clear connection between what is being sold and what is shown on the screen; however, it becomes memorable and people talk about meaning that it is a success.

In the Muller Rice commercial, it involves a man hungry at lunch time and then suddenly a bear is in his work place giving him Muller Rice. Also, in this advert they have used the song “Ice Ice Baby” and changed it into “Rice Rice Baby” meaning that people will remember it and sing along as it is supposed to be humorous. The bear has nothing to do with the product that they are trying to sell but because the song is catchy and the whole idea is fairly hideous it becomes memorable for people and when they see the product they will associate it with the advert.

Animation

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOLQbxrhkfE

Animated adverts are made as you can create characters and surroundings that you would not be able to do in real life. Most animated adverts are advertising a product that you could buy in a grocery store such as, coke, butter, cereal, etc. I believe that this is done so that children watch the adverts and enjoy them and when they see the product when they are out shopping that they pick it up and put it in the basket.

In the Kellogg's Honey Pops advert to the left, it is clearly promoting a new cereal. As they include honey, the advert involves lots of singing and dancing animated bee’s. They have made their own song for the advert and it is extremely catchy and appeals to all children meaning that they will want their parents to buy it for them. A disadvantage of animated adverts is that they can take up a lot of time and can also be very expensive.

Documentary Style

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjJQBjWYDTs In this #LikeAGirl commercial by the brand Always, they aren’t trying to sell an actual product; although, the message might bring more worth to the brand in the end. This advertisement is about how male and females perceive girls. Some older teenagers, a man and a boy was asked to throw, fight and run like a girl and all of them acted like a stereotypical girl; however, when young girls around the age to 10 were asked the same questions, they run, threw and fight as passionately as they can. The overall message was to not be ashamed of being a girl and to “run like a girl” should not be an insult.

Documentary style adverts are usually made to solve a problem or miscommunication, the person or people who are involved on screen tend to be being spoken to and asked questions about their opinion. The brand is not always trying to sell something either, sometimes it is about spreading awareness which makes it memorable and sometimes touching- it makes people think.

Series

Series adverts are used so that the audience engage with the storyline, this is a great way of selling a product as it gets people to want to see more. It is usually based around a growing family meaning that the viewers can keep up to date with what is happening whilst being more aware of the product that they are actually selling.

As you can see to the left, there are two Compare the Meerkat adverts which are the first and last of the series meaning that there has been 49 adverts so far in total. People have watched these adverts since there was one main meerkat until he has an entire family, this helps people remember.

Stand Alone

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WlRcXIO5ik

Stand alone adverts are adverts that do not have a storyline that needs to be continued and the same people are not used in another advert by the same brand. Most adverts are actually stand alone, I do not believe that they are that memorable unless it looks exciting which is why they are repeated a lot when they are first released.

In the Barclay card advert in 2008, it involves a guy who undresses into only his underwear in his work place and then goes into a room with a massive slide and goes on it which takes him all the way home. The final message was “glide with us”, which sounds clever and is extremely memorable, especially associating it with the advert. Also, the idea of Barclays making a fairly humorous advert it funny in itself.

Talking Heads

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-2oLQhv1s8

Talking head adverts are typically people talking directly to the camera about a brand, celebrities are usually used for this so that people want to listen to what it is about.

In the commercial that I have linked on the left is about a product called “u me drive” which is write band device where you can store and download your music. This is an American advert and no famous people are used; however, the speakers are really trying to engage with the audience which will capture their attention as it is like they are talking directly to them.
