Neighbourhood planning update It is time to draft our Neighbourhood plan. Before we start to put pen to paper we need to find out what people think about our area and how it could and should change. To try and find answers we set up an online survey earlier in the year, with questions such as what do you like about the area? what dont you like? And how can it be improved? The results of this survey can be found on the HWA website, hadleywood.org.uk.

We also held an open workshop in November to gather more ideas about priorities and how we should look to influence what gets built. Around 50 people came along and discussed a range of issues prompted by pictures from around the area. We covered topics such as what made for a good roof extension, how much space should be left between neighbouring homes, how important planting and trees are etc. The questions and picture prompts can be found at http://goo.gl/forms/dJZgeWbdC0. Please do have a look and add your thoughts. We really need as

many responses as possible.

The results of this exercise will help us draft our own local planning policies for extensions and infill development. Once

The event was featured in the Barnet and Potters Bar Press and also achieved this coverage in GTRs internal weekly newsletter: The Group presented the petition wrapped as a gift, with more than 1,300 signatures. This equates to roughly every person who uses the station on a daily basis, which was a huge achievement for the Group. We hope to deliver step-free access on the northbound platform alongside other improvements at the station in 2016- 17, subject to funding being awarded.

adopted these will be used when Enfield Council consider planning applications in Hadley Wood. Our Neighbourhood Plan will hopefully influence more than individual planning applications, although these are of course important often having such a big impact on neighbours. But we have the opportunity to look at other issues such as: how to keep our shops open now that national planning regulations have been relaxed and thus allowing their conversion to homes without planning permission. how to secure a long term, financially sound future for the Association buildings and land which helps it provide the facilities people have been asking for. how to create a more attractive and useful heart to our neighbourhood, maybe with improvements to the public space outside the shops, the station and, as requested many many times in the surveys, providing a pub/bar/social club facility.

The Forum can also take a much more active role in looking at, coordinating and strengthening responses to individual planning applications.

To do all of this we need help! It is wonderful that so many residents joined the Forum, came along to both our public events and filled in the first survey. But without individuals stepping up and taking charge of the activities above, they are just not going to happen. In receiving the petition, Andrew outlined his hope that GTR would be able to implement a package of enhancements in the next financial year, including better waiting facilities on Platform 4 and departure signage at street level as well as step- free access to the northbound platform and hence on to the rail network in either direction. The Rail User Group (RUG) will keep closely in touch with GTR to achieve as much as possible for Hadley Wood. RUG meeting dates are advertised on the noticeboard at the station entrance and both prospective and current members are most welcome. Our increasingly close communications with GTR also cover wider service issues, such as the high delay and cancellation rate in the run- up to Christmas. A Woodland plan for Monken Hadley Common

For the past twenty years there have been a series of five- year management plans to guide the overall maintenance and development of our Common. But there has not been any specific plan for the long- term management of the woodland. The majority of the work on trees has simply been maintenance i.e. preventing the spread of saplings into the open grassland

areas and the removal of dead/dangerous trees and branches. Consequently, the volunteer team that manages the Common face a number of problems about which, they believe, there would be a fairly broad consensus: holly has become too widespread; it prevents successful growth of other species and in some areas it has created a dark, and almost forbidding, environment the unchecked growth of self- seeded trees has led to serious overcrowding: the existing dense, high canopy prevents the development of saplings as well as any open grown trees. the paths through the woods are all very similar; with few exceptions, they are narrow, and each spring become narrower, with encroaching brambles and holly.

To address these problems, an arboriculturist was appointed to draft a Woodland Management Plan (WMP). Apart from providing an invaluable

framework on how to address these key issues and establish a sustainable woodland, a successful application of the WMP to the Forestry Commission can result in obtaining grants to do much of the work.

Action clearly needs to be taken to effect these changes. However, our overriding objective for the woods is to retain its essential character and semi- natural feel. It is not the plan to make it look like a country park or similar. 2015 started with a new Chairman for the Hadley Wood Association. The Rev. Rupert Mackay, Vicar of St Pauls took over from

Graham Sharp. A hard act to follow. Jason Charalambous a local young solicitor became an Enfield Councillor whose special responsibility is the Cockfosters ward. Thats us.

Francesca Caine retired and immediately started revolutionising our travel prospects, creating a Railway Users Group aimed at improving all aspects of rail travel from our 130 year old station. In particular step free access. Esther Kurland who works in the field of Local Government provided strong and knowledgeable leadership for the new Hadley Wood Neighbourhood Forum which on July 7th was approved by the Council and thus given legal status and power under the Localism Act of 2011. (The time has come to disperse power more widely in Britain today. So said the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister, Coalition

Agreement in May 2010). We hope so. The Middlesex Universitys old campus

in Trent Park was threatened by unwanted development and a Save Trent Park campaign started with a crowded meeting at Cockfoster Church and massive local support. Hadley Woods clubs and institutions continued to thrive. Barnets rugby under 10s (with strong representation from Hadley Wood lads and their Dads acting as coaches) won the U10 Allianz Cup final. The Hadley Wood and Wingate Football Club now with 19 teams from Under 7 to Under 15 continued to play at Bartrams Lane field and the Tennis club ran its customary Summer coaching for children as well as providing a lovely environment and facilities for its playing members. The Bridge Club, the Womens Institute, Janice Salmons Dance school, the Running Club and the Golf Club offered other opportunities for recreation which were enthusiastically accepted by local residents. Mums took their young children to our popular Pre school and Playgroup at the Hadley Wood Association building. Summer brought us

the Dog Show and the Primary schools Summer Fete. Both unmissable. More events followed for the Primary School as it celebrated its 50th Anniversary. July saw the first of John Leatherdales two historical articles about Hadley Wood published in this magazine and illustrated by his collection of old photographs of the area. The HWA website (hadleywood.org.uk) blossomed thanks to the efforts and ability of George McCormick. By July the site was receiving between 100 and 300 page views a day. August was notable for flooding in parts of Hadley Wood with water entering homes. In November Maria Evans and her team put on a wonderful Fireworks and Bonfire night with all sorts of rides food and drinks stalls etc. This was sponsored generously, as ever, by Statons estate agents. Sadly it rained though this did not deter Hadleywooders and their families from having a great evening.

So we reached a wet and warm Christmas 2015 with Fairs, the usual celebrations and daffodils flowering in back gardens. Rod Armstrong

Dear Editor The Friends of Trent Park are currently engaged in discussions with Enfield Council to restrain the number and impact of events held in the park this year. Last years experience was highly variable with some community gatherings proving successful and impacting very little on regular park users. However, the large commercial musical event, FOUND, proved too noisy in August and the 10,000 attendees too many for the neighbourhood. But the Council now state this is the event that brings in significant money, so they are planning to run it again this year. Some concessions have been granted to residents interests; there will be some investment back into the park from the councils fees, and events will be spaced out better with the two key summer months protected as far as possible, so not to discourage regular users.

Since Berkeley acquired control of the campus last September, they have been sizing up the options. The Friends are pressing for substantial investment in the

Update on Trent Park You may have heard the news that in September Berkeley Homes acquired the listed mansion and grounds at the heart of Trent Park, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the life of this attractive and historically important estate. The 21 hectare site surrounded by public parkland, which was famously used as an intelligence gathering Prisoner of War camp in WWII for captured German generals, has lain vacant for the past three years since Middlesex Universitys departure and the subsequent Malaysian owner went into liquidation.

Berkeley have said they will aim to submit a planning application in the Autumn for a primarily residential led development, and have reassuringly stated that they are committed to the long term protection of the listed Mansion House and other listed heritage assets and understand the need for the site to remain accessible to the local community so that it can be enjoyed by future generations.

Whilst a great number of people lament the loss of the educational use of the site, this could be compensated with community facilities and a heritage centre within the mansion focussing on the unique

role it played in WWII, together with its illustrious pre- war history where prime ministers and royalty were hosted by the socialite owner Sir Philip Sassoon. The murals of the great British artist Rex Whistler still adorn the walls, and it is only right that these should be enjoyed by the public, much as they were during Middlesex Universitys ownership.

It is important that any proposal includes permanent public access to the grounds and mansion, and that any new development is sympathetic in style and scale to the beautiful surrounding parkland, and appropriate to the sites Green Belt and Conservation Area designation.

During the course of this year there will be various consultations held by Berkeley Homes
