Hadley Wood –WW1 RemembranceThe centenary of the First World War is being remembered with a succession of events; perhaps the most evocative so far was last year’s installation ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’ at the Tower of London, where 888,246 ceramic poppies were planted in the moat – one for every British and Colonial military fatality. Almost every single parish in Britain lost local men and women in the conflict, and Hadley Wood was no exception. Many communities are honouring the memory of individual casualties that lived in the area; I have researched the men of Hadley Wood who died during the war. This is a brief summary of the findings so far.
As way of background, a hundred years ago our district was still very small and St Paul’s Church only a few years old. The census of 1911 covered about a hundred
properties, mainly in The Crescent, Lancaster Avenue, and Beech Hill, and something like four hundred residents. Of these less than 50 were males between 12 & 35 and therefore likely to have served in the war.
A total of 11 fatalities have been identified; men that either lived in Hadley Wood or were former residents. It is very sobering to think that roughly one in five of the young men of Hadley Wood did not survive the war. There is no war memorial in Hadley Wood itself, but some of these local casualties appear amongst the 49 names on the Monken Hadley War Memorial, which is sited on the upper part of the common.
They are; 2nd Lieutenant Henry Robert Ernest
Clark of ‘Hoadley’, Crescent West. Lance Corporal Francis Henry Marshall,
who had been raised at ‘Baliffs Cottage, Greenwood’ Hadley Wood.
Private Arthur George Marshall, the younger brother of Francis, also of ‘Bailiffs Cottage’.
Lieutenant Charles Stanley Shillingford, of ‘Parkfield’, Beech Hill.
Private Arthur Pechey Spanton, a former resident of ‘Greencroft’, Hadley Crescent.

The Railway Path Recently volunteers from Sustrans (the sustainable transport charity) came along to Hadley Wood to clean up the railway path leading from the station up the hill to Wagon Road. They removed a lot of brambles invading the path and marked out some cracks in their recently laid tarmac. These will be repaired in due course but in the meantime for cyclists using this path please watch out for the yellow rings demarcating tyre sized fissures.
We are all much obliged to these young people and to the Sustrans organisation who have been looking after this path over the past two years. Rod Armstrong

During the summer one hundred and seven residents completed a survey for the Hadley Wood Association about life in Hadley Wood. Their responses make interesting reading and are on the hadleywood.org.uk website.
To briefly summarise. There were 13 questions. The first was about the Association building and its grounds. (That’s the building at the far end of the tennis courts by the way, our village hall). Which facilities were most used? Most of the respondents voted for the woods and fields followed by the tennis courts and the playground. Question 2 asked whether residents might like to pay for any particular facility. ‘Yes’, said some. Which ones? Pilates, a community bar and yoga classes topped the list. Asked if anyone would be interested in organizing or running a community activity there were 96 answers. 2 said yes. 15 said maybe and the rest?…You guessed it, no thanks. What about possible social events? Quiz nights got 50% of the vote and a jazz evening 41%. The questionnaire continued. Asked how people felt about the Association building and its grounds, most replies were positive. The HWA is clearly valued and important but many thought the current activities did not meet everyone’s needs. More opportunities to meet people in the area would be welcomed.
What’s wrong with Hadley Wood? (Not a lot apparently)
Financial pressures on the Association were recognized and useful suggestions made. As regards rebuilding the hall and providing more facilities most residents voted for keeping the existing building, tennis courts and open spaces as they are. However there were interesting comments about how things could be improved. In particular by creating more spaces for use by groups other than the existing preschool and dance school. If money was no object what facilities would we like? No
lack of response to this one. A bar/pub was the most popular choice followed by a studio for exercise classes, a pool and gym. Most people seemed proud or quite proud to live in Hadley Wood (though some were not) and the features most residents liked best were the green and
open spaces, the tranquility, location near countryside, easy access to the train and motorway and the friendly neighbours.
What was least liked? Top of the list was the inappropriate building works, blocks of new flats and general overdevelop-ment of the area. Second was a lack of facilities and a close third, the car culture (including double parking and the thoughtless behaviour of some drivers). Better management of dogs and what they left behind for all of us to step in, was also a common complaint.

To the question ‘What changes would most improve Hadley Wood?’ A pub (or a place to meet) came up again. Next came ‘more control over development’ and third was ‘improvement to the parade of shops and station area (a frequently made comment throughout). What was striking and running right through the survey responses were the words green, peaceful, rural, open spaces, woods, and countryside. For many people these features are clearly very important.
This is just a brief resume of the responses to the survey but there is lots more and
the whole document can be found on the website hadleywood.org.uk. Many of the needed improvements requested are well within our power as a community. It is worth noting that the Association building could be much improved and the HWA’s clout at Enfield Council much stronger if more residents became members. (Membership fee currently £1.00 a week).
Where do we go from here? Our new Neighbourhood Forum is an opportunity we must grasp. It has now been ratified by the Council and has legal powers under the Government’s Localism Act. At
this Forum we can put forward our hopes and needs and plan our strategy. It has an outstanding leader in Esther Kurland. Hadley Wood is full of clever, industrious, and creative people. You are all needed. The next meeting is at St Paul’s Church Hall Crescent East at 7.30pm. on Thursday November 26th. Come along. Stand up and speak. What do we want for this community of ours? good news is that late night travellers back from Town should find that the frequency of trains will be somewhat improved.
GTR and our station manager Duncan Primrose are also making incremental improvements to the station based on RUG feedback, and the long- awaited bicycle racks are expected to be in situ from January. Further information and news will be published on the Railway users group noticeboard at the station entrance and on the Hadley Wood Association website Station page www.hadleywood.org.uk/station. The next RUG meeting will be held on 26th November at St Paul’s Church Hall at 1900 hrs, prior to the Neighbourhood Planning Forum meeting, and new and active members are most welcome. Many thanks to everyone who gave their support to the petition for step-free access to Hadley Wood station. We have collected over 1,300 signatures from residents and travellers, and the Rail User Group (RUG) will present it to Govia Thameslink Railway management shortly to promote the campaign.

Station News – Step-Free Access and Route Modificationimproved communications with GTR in general. Our stakeholder managers contacted us last month to brief us on their top issue, the driver shortage which is impacting the service. GTR’s Larry Heyman and Katherine Cox (pictured here with Francesca Caine) explained the situation and assured us that the company is investing in a major training programme
to deliver their committed timetable, but realistically its full benefits are not expected until summer 2016. The only immediate mitigant is better communications, which they are working hard to improve. We asked them to ensure that the Live Departures information online is updated as soon as a problem is identified and would encourage travellers to check online whenever possible before setting out. Your feedback on the service is welcome, either directly to GTR or to [email protected]. We also learned of the imminent route modification built into the new timetable from next month. GTR has given further details in the Letters column. The

The Schoolchildren’s Footpath on the right side of the road leading down to the HWA car park. To: Cllr Jason Charalambous; Esg Members EnquiriesCc: Barry SmartSubject: FW: MEQ 17758/15 - Hadley Wood Open Space.
Dear Cllr Charalambous, Thank you for your enquiry regarding footway repairs at Hadley Wood open space. Please be assured that once funding has been secured this site will be given highest priority within the 2016/18 programme.
The current condition of the path is beyond patching due to the magnitude of the work needed. Temporary patching will be very expensive and It will also add to the cost of a full reconstruction as it will increase excavation costs. The inspection recommended full depth reconstruction at the earliest opportunity which, subject to
funding, will be the summer of 2016. This will work well with site restrictions: seasonal ground conditions for construction vehicles; maintaining access to the school.
The inspector did confirm the paths are in very poor condition but did not suggest the public were at high risk. Highly hazardous or dangerous sites are fenced off immediately while funding is secured for repairs. In this case fencing off for several months is not required. Work has already begun to raise funds and procure a contractor to complete the work at the earliest opportunity.RegardsPeter Robinson ACMAContract ManagerPublic RealmRegeneration and Environment DeptEnfield Borough Council Sent: 29 October 2015
As the nights get darker earlier, burglaries tend to increase, so leave lights on inside your house.
Leave a light on in more than one room, such as the lounge and bedroom. Remember to choose low-energy lamps.
Use a timer switch to operate the lights as it starts to get dark. Change the times that the lights comes on to create the illusion that someone is moving around inside the house.
Make sure your front door is well lit and fully visible from the street. Police recommend dusk to dawn lighting that automatically comes on as it gets dark. Dusk to dawn lamp adaptors are
available from DIY stores. Keep shrubbery and hedges at the
front pruned to below 1 metre to remove cover for a burglar to work unseen and allow visibility by neighbours.
Keep your curtains closed at night - if you are away, ask a neighbour to close them for you.
Check existing lighting is in good working order and replace any faulty equipment. Remember to check batteries in torches and smoke alarms.
Report any crimes or suspicious incidentsto the police on 101,or dial 999 in an emergency. The National Intelligence Unit for Organised Travelling Criminality

Forum Meeting
September and October have been busy months for social events in Hadley Wood. Statons have proudly sponsored a number of recent social events including the black tie dinner that celebrated the 50th anniversary of Hadley Wood Primary School, the Men’s LTC Ratings Tournament and the annual Hadley Wood Association Fireworks Night.
A huge crowd turned up to enjoy the magnificent bon-fire celebrations, street food, and entertainment put on by the Hadley Wood Association. The rain held off and everyone was able to make the most of the incredible firework display and its spectacular finale. The helter-skelter, bouncy castle and
other funfair rides were thoroughly enjoyed by the children. Congratulations on a very successful evening.
The tennis club was bathed in glorious sunshine on both weekends of the re-established Men’s LTA Rating Tourna-ment. We watched some nail biting rallies and match point aces. Great sportsmanship was in abundance; Nigel Shearsby, from Statons, presented the winners and runners up with tro-phies and prize money.
Our Statons Hadley Wood team joined local residents and ex-pupils of Hadley Wood School at the Hadley Wood Golf Club to celebrate the Schools 50th Anniversary. Everyone had a fantastic time at this event and enjoyed an evening of good food and music. There was also a raffle and an auction that raised over £6,000 towards a new all-weather playing field for the school.

New seven- day- a- week train service to the CityResponding to stakeholder feedback, Great Northern is delighted to be creating a seven-day- a- week train service from Finsbury Park to Moorgate in the heart of the City, better for late- returning commuters and providing more interchanges for shoppers.
From 13 December, most inner suburban route trains which previously ran into King’s Cross at night and at weekends will operate to Moorgate in the centre of London, via the Northern City Line stations of Drayton Park, Highbury & Islington, Essex Road and Old Street. Late- night services will continue to operate from Kings Cross as well as from Moorgate to transport home those enjoying central London’s nightlife. With fast, step- free, cross- platform connections with the Victoria line to the West End at Highbury & Islington, it will also give Hadley Wood residents access to the Westfield shopping centre and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park at Stratford via London Overground.
There will still be services into King’s Cross from the longer distance fast and semi- fast Great Northern services from stations such as Peterborough and Cambridge and anyone for King’s Cross travelling on the inner suburban service should change at Highbury & Islington for the cross-platform interchange with the Victoria Line to King’s Cross; National Rail tickets are available
between these two locations.Great Northern Passenger Service Director Keith Jipps said:
“Our new seven- day-a-week service will connect communities to the heart of the City at night- time and at weekends which will be better for late-returning commuters, partygoers travelling to the night spots of Old Street and nearby Shoreditch and weekend shoppers at Westfield. It’s what stakeholders said they wanted and we’re delighted to be able to deliver it.” Roger Perkins Media Relations Manager Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) PS Weekend arrangements at Drayton Park on football match daysPassengers are asked to note that Drayton Park does not have the capacity to safely handle the large numbers of passengers going to the nearby Emirates Stadium and will therefore be closed for two hours before and after each Arsenal match at weekends to protect the safety of passengers. During the week, current arrangements will apply (which is to close the station only after a match). Passengers are advised to use Finsbury Park station instead.
