A New Headmistress forHadley Wood PrimarySchool.Back at school again the Hadley WoodNews welcomed the opportunity to meetMrs Beverly Benson, our primary School’snew Headmistress. Armed with a degree inEnglish and Psychology, Beverly’s teachingcareer started at a middle school inBorehamwood before moving into thePrimary sector in Potters Bar. A careerbreak to bring up her two children did notlast long. Sadly she became a widow andas a single mother had to return early to fulltime teaching, first in Potters Bar andsubsequently at South Mymms. “It was adifficult time, but it gave me an insight intothe problems facing single mothers, whichhas been very useful. I know first-hand howdifficult it can be for them”. A period asacting head stimulated her interest in takingon this role permanently and lead to herobtaining her NPQH from the NationalCollege of School Leadership inNottingham. Her hobby at this time was,and still is, Pottery and it was through this

interest that she met and married againinheriting a much loved stepson to add toher family. The post of Deputy Head at Trent School

in Cockfosters was her next appointment.During this time she obtained an MA fromMiddlesex University, her publisheddissertation being on the ‘Implementationof the Virtual Learning Environment’. In factthe use of computers in teaching had beena long held interest. She was one of the firstteachers to bring a computer into theclassroom and believes they can have asignificant role in education. One of heraims here is to build on Mrs Loizidesexcellent work and widen their usage. What attracted her to Hadley Wood? “Its

such a nice school” she replies “Smallenough to get to know all the children welland with an outstanding reputation. I alsofeel its needs fit my strengths”. She has aspecial interest in children who have fallenbehind for a variety of reasons and with astrong team of teachers to support her isconfident the school will continue to providea fine education for all the children. “Whatabout discipline?” I ask. She considers for amoment. “Its not really a problem here. Wetry to embed self-discipline and not imposeit, so that the children can apply their valuesindependently. Obviously there are childrenwho are naughty from time to time. They aresent to see me and I have a few words.Quite often” she adds with a smile “morethan a few”. She smiles quite a lot actually. It is obvious throughout the interview thatshe has a very well developed sense ofhumour. What else? She runs through ashort list. “Multi- culturalism is important. Weencourage the children to learn about theirclassmates of different backgrounds and

religions. We are keen on sport. Football, tennis, athletics and netball are our majorsports and we play against other schools inEnfield. Drama and productions are alreadyvery good here and I would like to build onthis. Now with smaller classes of about 30children we hope to be able to free upspace dedicated to cookery and scienceteaching. The Olympics are a great sourceof interest and we are aiming to use themas a source of knowledge about geographyand history as well as all the sport”.Doors are opening and closing outside

the office. Children’s footsteps are echoingin the corridor. Its 2.00 pm and time to go.Crossing the field I reflect how lucky we areto have such a fine school here. I think thisnew Head is going to be a great success.Rod Armstrong

For over 30 years Hadley Woodhas been lucky to have acommunity playground near thetennis courts on the field. As a lifelong resident I

remember using the playgroundas a child after school with the funroundabout, the precarious slide and thevarious swings.Of course times have changed and

with the introduction of Health and Safetyand the advances in equipment theplayground has changed a number oftimes including its last renovation over 12years ago to its current state. This playground is within a short walking

distance to Hadley Wood Primary School, the tennis courts, local shops, station,pre-schools and most residents.Despite the fact there are over 6500

residents in Hadley Wood including1000 children up to the age of 14* theplayground remains quiet and used byonly a few children on irregular occasions.About a year ago whilst using the

playground a few of us noticed things thatseemed to be missing for children within it.The flooringwas tired and in places crackedor bare. The equipment was in need of newpaint and comparative to other communityplaygrounds, old fashioned, dated anduninspiring. The small grass area withinthe playground was muddy, small andunexceptional. And most importantlygenerally used by young children. After doing some research we

discovered that the playground is not

known by all the residentsin Hadley Wood. Thosethat do know of it did notknow it was for the wholecommunity but thought itmay be affiliated to aschool.

It was mostly utilised by youngerchildren before reaching school age ratherthan the target audience of up to 12 yearolds and the general consensus was thatit was a “toddler playground” targetedtowards the under 5’s.This is why the HadleyWoodCommunity

Playground Renovation (HWCPR) projectwas set up. A sub-committee of theHadley Wood Association and a charitythis project has three main objectives:Create a modern playground accessibleto all Hadley Wood children up to theage of 12Make the playground larger to allowmore room to developCreate a social environment for allHadley Wood families to come andenjoy the activities and each other

A committee has been set up with twopeople heading the project Maria Evans(pictured above right) and myself, LauraGassner (above left). This committee hasbegun the process to create thecommunity playground Hadley Wooddeserves. This includes:Meeting Enfield Council who havepledged to support this project includingproviding extra manpower and help

Having the full support of DavidBurrows MP.Becoming part of the HadleyWood Association includingsetting up an account for all themoney raised **

Creating preliminary plans for an idealplayground with approved playgrounddevelopersMarking out the size of the newplayground with ropes to allow residentsto get an idea of the proposed new sizeSpeaking to the local schools and pre-schools including the children who haveparticipated in a project to choseequipment for the playgroundHolding a Public Meeting (the first ofmany) for all residentsApplying for Grants

The HWCPR team will be at the HadleyWood Fireworks Display to discuss thisproject further. There will be a chance toanswer any questions that you may have, offer your support and look at possibleplans of what the future playground couldlook like. Please show your support forthis project by visiting the stand at thisgreat annual event. Maria and I lookforward to seeing you there. For further information you can contact

Local Police. SaferNeighbourhood team.A recurring complaint in Hadley Woodis about speeding. To ask about thisand also to get an update on ourSafer Neighbourhood team, the HW Newsmet with Police Sergeant Peter Moxhamnow in command of the team looking afterSouthgate and Cockfosters (that’s us).The current priorities, as requested by

6

local residents in our ward, are burglary, theft from cars, anti-social behaviour androad safety. In addition there have beenseveral other initiatives. Preventative actionis taken by high visibility police patrollingareas known to be troublesome. Drug‘busts’ with help from neighbouring unitshave been very successful, and a highpriority is the prevention of so called ‘hate’crime against specific religious groups orindividuals. As far as road safety isconcerned members of the team havebeen attending training sessions in the useof speed guns. Traffic unit cars also patrolthe area. These have cameras fore and aftwhich photograph number plates. Thedetails are run through an immediatecomputer check tomake sure that the car isinsured and taxed. The check also revealswhether the car has been involved in anycriminal activity. As far as persistentspeedsters are concerned SergeantMoxham would like to encourage residentsto telephone or email the SNT with detailsof offenders number plates. (The identity ofthe sender of such information is notrevealed). In the first instance the offenderwould receive a visit from the police. Furtherreports are dealt with more seriously. Theftfrom cars is a regular event and the SNTstress the importance of not leaving anybelongings in the car when not attended.(GPS systems like Tom Toms are particularlyattractive to thieves. Their presence in theglove box is given away by the signs of anadhesive ring on the windscreen). What about budget cuts? How are they

affecting the police force? Apparently theMetropolitan police service has had toreduce Police Sergeant roles on SaferNeighbourhoods Teams by 150. Someof the more experienced Sergeantsincluding Sergeant Moxham have nowtaken on supervision of two wards. Tohelp meet local priorities the police arefinding smarter ways to use their officers &making greater use of Special Constablesand Met Volunteers. Further planned cutscould hit very hard so any buddingvolunteers out there should make contactand fill out an application.Sergeant Moxham went on to mention

that stationing a policemen at the HadleyWood Association Centre each week sothat residents could drop in and discussproblems, had not been useful. Tomaximise police time ‘on the beat’ thesesessions had now been stopped.Residents who would like to talk to one ofthe team personally can approach them atcertain sites which are advertised on theirwebsite. Letters to the EditorDear Sir,As a regular walker in the field besideHadley Wood School, I amsomewhat concerned by the plans toconsiderably enlarge the existingchildren's play area.

Firstly, the proposed size of thenew area and the major up-gradingof the equipment would seem morelikely to attract children andteenagers from outside HadleyWood, thus adding to our alreadycongested parking problems andalso to possible evening nuisanceand vandalism.Secondly, it is apparently

proposed to extend the fenced areanorthwards up the hill, beyond theentrance to the footpath fromCourtleigh Avenue, thus spoiling thepresent view of the open field asseen from the path.My children and grandchildren

have all enjoyed the play area inits present form and it is a greatasset to Hadley Wood. Would nota small extension and generalre-furbishment be adequateimprovement?A Hadley Wood resident
