EditorialThis Christmas issue of theNews focuses on Charity andincludes some examples offund raising activities by

Hadley Wood residents. We are all familiarwith our local favourites Cherry Lodge, theNorth London Hospice and Noah’s Arkbut there are many other charities forwhich people in our community worktirelessly and quietly. Here are a few of theones we know about.

Help for Heroes

Bill Morris and friends are currentlywalking from Glasgow to the top of BenNevis on behalf of Help for Heroes, thecharity which helps injured servicemen. Itis 100 miles and they are now strugglingthrough some of the coldest weatherScotland has experienced for years. Sofar they have raised over £13000. By thetime you read this they should be safelyhome. To follow their progress you canread their blog at:wwwbmycharity.com/highlands4heroes

The Great Wall of China.Final Instalment. Nikki Forsyth cycled from Beijing to theGreat Wall of China in support of ProfessorWinston’s research into early miscarriagesand stillbirths. This is the final part of her story...Its Day Two and our first stop is in thelarge car park of an office building. It hasthe local type of ‘in the floor’ toilets –three of you wee at the same time, nopartitions or doors! Then we are back onthe bikes again. Stops are usually aboutevery 20 odd kilometres unless neededat the top of a ‘hill’ (of which more later)or before ascending one. We are given:- a) drinking water, two or three each – oneto drink there and then the rest fortopping up bike bottles. b) bottles of tapwater (crosses on the lids to differentiate)to pour over the head, down the backand if really necessary (ie. 38 degree)down the cleavage! c) a banana (it might be a while before Ican eat another banana from choice!) d)a ladleful of peanut and spicy bits e)usually something sweet.

Whilst attending to this, Pia who, understands Chinese, overheard themgrumbling about how much the ‘bignoses’ (foreigners) eat – they should trythe hills! On the last 20 kms before lunch we

come to long gradual hills on slightlyless busy roads and they seem to bemanageable, I’m still mostly in 3rd gearand comfortable chatting or pushing onpast quite a few people. Christine, whois 57 with a thick Scottish accent, a wirebasket (complete with Scottish soft toymascot), is in a long sleeved shirt(because of the sun) and struggling. Idrop back and chat alongside her. She’s done several rides in the past. She has to stop and I suggest movingher camel (water backpack) to thebasket, pour water down her front andback, give her an energy sweet andstart off again. It’s getting warm (34degrees) and she’s getting very red.She has to stop at the next hill and whileI’m pouring water on her (now mydrinking water) the back rider, Claude, and doctor Tamsin, arrive. They help herdecide to get in the bus for the rest ofthe stage. It transpires that all the otherswe had passed were also now in thebus (a total of 19) which means that Iam now the last so have a long hardsprint to catch up and get to lunch. Once there I am staggered to find that

the group is eating lunch under a dualcarriageway bridge, sitting on a sort ofhard shoulder with all the traffic rushing by. Apparently there is a tourist centre

nearby and – wait for it – air conditionedtoilets! This is the news of the week andmuch appreciated. Then it is an afternoon

of hills and finally downhill to the hotel atthe bottom. This hotel had a feel of a prefabricated

building with an attempt to make it‘cottage like/Western’. However the staffwere soooo pleased to see us, they werehelping with the bags and nothing wastoo much trouble. There’s a lot ofphoning and texting (not just here but atevery meal – even breakfast when it’smidnight in UK and at every cycle stop, etc.) I’m very pleased that I’m not underthat pressure and can enjoy just being inthe moment (I mean what can they doabout the child who’s missed his dentistappointment or the husband that can’tfind the ketchup!?!). We are told that tomorrow is such a

long and hard day that we need to be upat 5.00am. If anyone is too slow they willforce us to get into the bus because we must be at our hotel by 6.30 latest as

it’s out of the question to cycle in thedark. As there is already much grumblingabout never being able to stop to takephotos and ‘see’ China, this is not metwith enthusiasm. Tuesday 12th – Day 3 We set off at 6am – and eventually, turninto a proper village and cycle down themarket/high street. Nice to see ‘realChinese life’ at last. Now the hills arestarting to go on and on, I’m doing OKbut eventually I’m down to gear 1.2. Justas stopping again is becoming muchmore than a passing thought, I turn acorner and see people and cars.Someone is shouting... ‘only 100msmore’ – and I make it! All of a suddenwe’re at The Great Wall! We are rushedto form a group so that we can take thetelecabin to the Wall. Our legs areshaking and it’s hard to get our shoeschanged. Pia and I have to run to catchup with the group (well sort of hobbleactually). We are then faced with a steepflight of stairs to get up to the base station– the pace was slower and the noisessimilar to a bunch of 80 yr olds trying the

same flight with Zimmer frames. As we ascend in the 6 man ski-type

telecabin we look down into the valleyfrom where we’ve cycled and I feel a realsense of achievement and satisfaction. Then we look up and around and I’mmesmerized by the wall and the scale ofit – I get an amazing rush of emotion – I’mactually seeing what all the photos try toportray but fail. We step out and up (morestairs but the rest in the telecabin andenthusiasm carries us on). It is wonderful, just amazing and everything I was hoping

for. I’m thrilled – I’ve been on a high sincewe arrived and just couldn’t stop smilingand looking in wonder. This was the high point but not the end

of the ride. Days 4 and 5 were my ownversion of The Tour De France as ‘hills’became mountain ranges, but I made it. Nikki Forsyth

The RNLI and theNSPCCOne of Britain’s favourite charities, theRNLI, has a thriving support group inHadley Wood. Under the leadership ofAnn Phillips and with a strong team offriendly helpers, this group keep goingyear after year raising thousands ofpounds for the lifeboatmen who savelives in the seas around our coast. At thecoffee morning held at the HadleyMemorial Hall last October they raised£1300. Another meeting is planned forWednesday April 14th 2011. It will be achampagne reception with a PeriodCostume show. A bit different from thetraditional lunch. The group hope to seeyou there! The Hadley Wood branch of the

No account of charitable activity in Hadley Wood would becomplete without a visit to see Ella Glazer who was a foundermember and subsequently Chairman of the Celebrities Guild. She still runs this incredible organisation on an entirelyvoluntary basis in a small office with a few part time staff. As a freelance journalist in the 70’s Ella made a speciality of

interviewing people in the News. In 1975 by virtue of her charmand general chutzpah she became friendly with many of thesubjects of her interviews. With a group of them she set up theCelebrities Guild charity. Their intention was to try and raisemoney for disabled and disadvantaged people particularlychildren. To say they were successful in their aim would be theunderstatement of the century. They organise Gala dinners, riverboat trips, golf days, poker tournaments, auctions andeven cycling marathons and in all these activities aresupported by singers, comedians and sportsmen who comealong to give their time. We could not do the work without thesupport of many poeple out there - none of whom get paid. With the money raised the Guild donates funds ranging from

individual contributions such as wheelchairs to such majorawards as coaches for Children’s hospitals, computers, ambulances, scanners, furniture for Old People’s Homes, dialysis machines and research funds of all sorts. The list islong and comprehensive. When Chickenshed commentedthat their children with hearing disabilities could not hear themusic well enough to dance the Celebrities had a special stagefloor made. This allowed affected children to sense thevibrations produced by the music and dance. She showed meher scrapbooks. They are a history of the British stage, radio, cinema and playing field from the 70’s onwards. I picked outnames at random as we scanned the pages. David Jacobs,Larry Adler, Trevor Brooking, Kenny Lynch, Dennis Norden,Vera Lynn, Lionel Blair and more recently Judi Dench, PhillipGlenister, Nicholas Parsons, Steve Rider, Gary Lineker, JuneBrown and John Altman. There are many more. For all this Ella received an MBE. Has she decided to step

down and rest on her laurels? No way. The Guild goes onmaking its great contribution to our society and with Ella at thehelm it looks like doing so for many more years.Rod Armstrong

Fireworks night.Another perspective.

On the 6th of November, Hadley Woodwas flooded with people for the annualfirework display. It never fails to amazeme that the seemingly ghost like hamletof Hadley Wood, can produce so manypeople solely on one night of the yearand then suddenly after this one night, everyone goes back into hiding and youdon’t see them until the next year. Sogreat is this phenomenon that my brotherand I have taken to betting which peoplewe will see. The question I would like toask is where does everyone go for therest of the year? Philosophical issuesapart, I’d like to take this opportunity tothank all the people who help organisethis great community event each yearand in particular Graham Sharp and histeam who worked tirelessly behind thescenes to pull off this lovely night.Rosa Ferguson-Lobo

Who would havethought..?December has inevitably got me into areflective mood about the extraordinaryyear that has rushed by and to ask somerhetorical “Who would have thought”questions. I suppose I would havethought that David Cameron would bePrime Minister, but seeing Nick Clegg onthe front bench next to David as DeputyPM was way beyond my thoughts lastyear! In fact what is even more surprising, particular for outside commentators, isthe fact that theCoalition Governmentis working so well. Inmy perch as aParliamentary PrivateSecretary in theCabinet Office I seehow ministers areworking together with a

The Hadley Wood Association organisedtheir usual annual family firework displayon Saturday 6th November. After extensivepaperwork in the preparation of the Healthand Safety regulations, for which RodArmstrong and John Leatherdale bothdeserve an A + mark and my sincerethanks, the practical organisation ofbuilding the bonfire by Kamil and Thomasgot under way at daybreak. Restrainingbarriers, exit signs, roping off of no-goareas were put in place, and the stall-holders arrived to schedule to take theirplace in their designated areas. Allpreparations were ready for the opening ofthe gates at 5.30pm. and we were blessedwith a dry evening, which encouraged agood attendance from local residents andtheir friends.

The firework display was one of thebest we have experienced by P-A Boom, accompanied by some stirring musicaccompaniment. The ghost train, roundabouts, the food stall withsausages, burgers and crepes were busyand all appeared to be enjoying theoccasion. The bar at the Centre with thesmell of an excellently prepared mulledwine by Sarah and Richard provedextremely popular and the bar helperswere kept very busy as a result. I ampleased to report there was no evidenceof any misbehaviour, particularly from theChairman (!) and the Red Cross were nottroubled that evening. Perhaps thepresence of our local police and ourregular security guards all helped to makethis a safe and happy occasion. An eventsuch as this does not just happen withouta tremendous amount of effort fromseveral people who willingly give of theirtime and expertise, but unfortunately it isalways the same group of people. Morelocal residents, particularly the youngermembers of the community, need to stepforward and take over the responsibilityfor this event if it is to continue. My thankson behalf of the Association to NickStaton for his continued sponsorship, without which we would not be able tohold this firework party, and to all those

positive energy to make decisions in thenational interest.Enfield Southgate’s recent general

election history has produced “whowould have thought” moments – just askMichael Portillo and Stephen Twigg! However, thankfully this year all thedrama was on a national and not localscale, apart from control of EnfieldCouncil changing political colour. Ourcountry has largely avoided violentrevolutions but the ballot box can still berevolutionary. A minister can walk into anelection count looking forward to high

office and walk out unemployed. Beforethe election Gordon Brown was a leaderwho could command global attentionand influence and was rarely away frommedia attention for 24hrs. After theelection we have seen him on just 3occasions in Parliament and he hasspoken once from the backbenches.Moving a little away from politics,

perhaps more extraordinary thancoalition government is the sight ofAnne Widdecombe being draggedaround the ‘Strictly Come Dancing” floordoing the samba!

My top “who would have thought”moments are in fact international. SeeingAung San Suu Kyi, Burma’s courageousleader walk free from being in captivity for15 of the last 21 years amid joyousscenes was wonderful. I recall takingsome Burmese students aroundParliament and their awe and excitementat the freedom and democracy whichthey long for.On the subject of freedom, it is hard to

beat seeing those Chilean miners beingrescued. It was the words on most of therescued miners’ t-shirts which have stayedwith me. On the front were the words“Thank you Lord”. On the sleeve and front– “ Jesus.. In whose hands are the depthsof the earth, the peaks of the mountainsare His also...to God be all the glory!”What a good message for Christmas. Best wishes for the New Year.David Burrowes MPwww.davidburrowes.com
