2011. A review inpictures.Winter started fairly early in 2011 but thatdid not stop local resident Bill Morris andteam walking from Glasgow to the top ofBen Nevis in support of Help for Heroes(Fig.2). They started on the coldest dayGlasgow had recorded since 1962 andthe walk (?) took them one weeksometimes pushing through waist deepsnow whilst conditions and temperatureslowly worsened. Nonetheless theymade it and in the process raised over£20000 for H4H.

February and March were marked bythe centenary celebrations for our muchloved St Paul’s church (Fig.3). These

included a whole range of activities fromspecial church services to talentcontests, a dog show (Fig.4), concert anda strongly supported fun run (Fig.5).

The whole event was much enjoyed. The fun runners demonstrated someoriginal outfits, and it was especially niceto meet many of Hadley Wood’s oldfriends who came back to join thecelebrations (Fig.6).

By March there were the beginnings ofa movement by a group of local womento improve the dire state of the children’splayground. (The one (and only) on theAssociation’s field next to Hadley WoodPrimary school). The playground isowned and managed by Enfield Councilbut has deteriorated over the years. Newplans were proposed and a process wasstarted to put these forward to the localcommunity.

Sometime around May was the RoyalWedding. The residents of Hadley

Highstone did particularly well putting ona traditional street party inside theMemorial Hall complete with songs, foodand flags. Also known as a knees-up(Fig.7).

One of Hadley Wood’s great strengthsis its many charity groups. Thesecontinued their longstanding efforts toraise money amongst them the NSPCCand RNLI groups, the Rainbow ChildFoundation, the Celebrities Guild,Breakthrough Cancer research and manyothers not to forget ten year old AmyNortham who walked twenty miles toraise money for needy schoolchildren inAfrica.

Around the same time our local Police(Fig.8) team (the Safe NeighbourhoodTeam) had a change of leadership. PoliceSergeant David Walker, who worked veryhard to set up the team and meetresidents, retired and was replaced byPolice Sergeant Peter Moxham. Theteam are based in a shop premises onSouthgate High street. They welcomeand encourage residents to makecontact with them to report criminalactivity which they will investigate andtake action against. They are not howeveran emergency response team thoughthey will of course get involved if theyhappen to be nearby an incident.(Telephone numbers are on the back ofthis magazine). from nearby flat roofs. On the subject ofthe police you can, by the way, get themto come round and advise on makingyour house more burglar proof.

June saw Skanska upgrading our gaspipes. This, when added to the normaldaily problems of trying to manouevreround double parked cars or contractorsvehicles, caused many of us to lose timeand patience. Also in June several

residents drew our attention to the factthat John Lewis’s had decided we livedon a flood plain and were therefore notinsurable. John Leatherdale whounderstands this sort of thing and whohas contacts in the arcane world ofmaps geology tunnels and other formsof our infrastructure, investigated anddemonstrated that this was a load ofbaloney. Hopefully John Lewis’s got the

our open windows on Sundays (Fig.12).The worst of the storage sheds at thesouthern end of the ground was replacedby a more modern structure (Fig.13).Should anyone wealthy enough tosponsor a small pavilion on this beautifuland popular sports field care to comeforward they would be welcomed withopen arms and naming rights.

June also saw the Primary School’sannual fete (Fig.14). Another great dayand a tribute to the energy and drive ofthose residents who organised it. (Weapologise for what might be the previousyear’s photo from the fete but as itincluded Mrs Loizides it provides atempting opportunity to slide effortlesslyinto the next paragraph.)

For it was about this time that MrsLoizides retired. As is widely appreciatedLouiza made a great contribution to theeducation of our children and left theschool in a very strong position. Ofsted’slatest report described the school as‘outstanding in all areas’.

After Mrs Loizides retired we weredelighted to welcome Mrs BeverlyBenson into the school when she tookover as our new Headmistress. Herprofile was reported in the Octoberedition.

By September the playground initiativereferred to earlier was in full swing withLaura Gassner and Maria Evans heading

a determined group of young mothers.Discussions with Enfield Council hadproved helpful and early efforts to raisemoney were successful with £50,000

provided so far by private, corporate andgrant funding. Further fund raisingactivities are planned, so keep yourhands on your wallets.

the Family fireworks evening onNovember 5th. No rain, a great displayand plenty of unsuitable food and sweetsto interest the children seemed to workwell (Fig.15). Although efforts were madeto sell tickets in advance there were stillmany who paid on the night. As a resultthere was too much queuing and notenough ticket sellers (Fig.16). We weresorry about this and hope to improve nextyear especially if we can find some morevolunteers.

Politically it was hard to see muchchange in the overall community scheme

of things during the last year. The BigSociety sounded a nice idea but it seems

to have foundered. The Localism Billhowever caught our attention. Putting

some power into the hands ofsmall communities sounded anattractive concept but it is hardto imagine that the ordinaryman or woman on the street willbe able to do much aboutunwanted development. Asevidenced by the BarnetMarket saga, the developmentin Cat Hill and what sounds likea threat to Trent Park. We shallsee.

The last big event on theHadley Wood Calendar was

Would you like a more toned, more flexible, longer, leaner, stronger look to your body.

These are just a few of the benefits Pilates offers. Private sessions are becoming increasingly popular as exercises can be adapted to

suit peoples individual needs.

The sessions enable you to have a more personal method of learning.

Don’t live with back pain book now to see a specialist

Lower back pain is extremely common and can be acute enough to stop people functioning normally on a day to day basis.

Pilates is a key exercise method for helping to improve posture and therefore relieve daily aches and pains.

Letters to the Editor.Dear EditorI would like to draw your readersattention to the possibility that TrentPark is in serious jeopardy. Next yearthis glorious park will be seeing theback of Middlesex University whichwill raise further threats to its statusas an inalienable environmentalamenity. So far as it has beenpossible to ascertain, EnfieldCouncil’s Parks department isunaware of any proposals for the sitethat would affect the status orintegrity of the Park. However thecurrent storm of protest against thePlanning Application to build on theMiddlesex University’s vacatedcampus at Cat Hill is an ominousportent. A site such as thisconstitutes a much coveted prize forconstruction companies who willinevitably be jostling in eageranticipation for such a rareopportunity to exploit what they will, quite erroneously in my opinionregard as a brown field site.

It behoves all who wish to continueto enjoy what Trent Park has to offeras a superlative recreational amenitynot merely to remain vigilant but toact NOW to ensure the site be re-integrated with the rest of the park. Itshould be a fully restored countrypark estate for the public to enjoy asits former owner Sir Phillip Sassoonwilled it to be.

Yours truly,Peter Hewitt(I am sorry to have had to precis thisimportant letter in the interests ofspace. I hope the author will forgiveme. Should anyone wish to see thecomplete version please contact me.Editor.)

Overall then not a bad year for oursmall community. A new shed on thefield, a new floor in the AssociationCentre, a new playground in the offing, new gas pipes, new lamps in theSt Mary’s (Fig.17) churchyard andrefurbished white gates at the top ofHadley Hill and at the end of TheCrescent. This completes the ring ofrestored gates around the Common forwhich we are grateful for the efforts andgenerosity of the Curators of theCommon, the Friends of HadleyCommon, the Hadley Residents

Association, the Common ManagementCommittee and many local people. As wego to print a further piece of good news isthat the old Barnet Market site has beenbought by UBS the owners of the Spires.
