Letter from theChairmanThis issue is devoted mainly to theHadley Wood Playground. Currently inpoor condition the playground badlyneeds a facelift. Following an initiative byHelen Mestchian, Laura Gassner MariaEvans and Angela Vignall-Brown acommittee of local parents have workedhard to find funds for a playgroundupgrade. Their efforts have resulted in asignificant sum of money being raised. We congratulate them on theirdetermination and look forward to seeingthe new changes put in place. In themeantime we all need to give this groupour continuing support.Rod Armstrong

THE HADLEY WOODCOMMUNITYPLAYGROUNDRENOVATION –PHASE ONEThanks to the hard work of thecommittee, support from thecommunity, local businesses anda generous grant supplied bySITA we now have enough moneyto create Phase 1, a new area ofthe playground.

A large part of our MissionStatement was to ensure that theolder children would be cateredfor by the Community Playground,a situation currently lacking withthe existing equipment.

With this money we have put a

plan in place managed by Enfield Councilto enlarge the playground by 50% andsupply four new pieces of equipment forthe older children. These equipmentpieces include:• Swinging Nest• Zip Wire• Whizzer• Rotating Climbing Frame

These pieces of equipment are targetedtowards the older children from age 7 to14 years old and will encourage morelocal children into the playground area.

This area will also have two newbenches and a bin.

As you can see by the map, thisenlarged area will be North of the currentsite still allowing a beautiful view of thefield from the Car Park, Tennis Courts andthe paths running up to the playgroundand walking towards it from CourtleighAvenue and Claremont Road.

renovated and the rest of the moneyraised will be used to upgrade the currentequipment. We are hoping to have PhaseTwo completed by the end of the year sothat the playground will be ready for allthe children in Hadley Wood. This willonly be possible with your help.Laura Gassner

As you can see from thephoto, the currentplayground is in direneed of renovating. Theflooring is damaged, coming loose and inplaces bare. The presentequipment is in need ofupdating, rusty anduninviting. Whensurveyed, over 75% of thepeople young and old thought theplayground was designed exclusively foryoung children.

With the money raised so far we canreport that we are able to enlarge theplayground (Phase 1). Thereafter we aimto upgrade the existing site (Phase 2).

The flooring will be completely

3

This part of the playground upgrade willstart at the beginning of August 2012 andwill take a matter of weeks to completeensuring the children will be able to playin that area by the end of the Summer. The existing playground will remain openfor use while work is being carried out tothe new area.

We have entitled this Phase One of theproject. Phase two will be updating theexisting area from its current state. This iswhere the community comes in.Laura Gassner

A ‘More than Gold’Sports Weekend Comesto Hadley Wood!18th to 20th May 2012It is an enormous privilege for London tobe hosting the 2012 Olympic Games thissummer. It will be a year to remember forall of us and many of our children will lookback on the Games as a marker in thehistory of their lives.

At St Paul’s Church, we thought itwould be appropriate to celebrate thespirit of the Olympics by gatheringtogether to participate in some sportingactivities ourselves.

Instead of running in the HundredMetres against Usain Bolt, all canparticipate in a Fun Run amongst theinternational community of Hadley Wood.We launch the weekend on the Fridayevening with an event for teenagersstarting at 7:30pm. It promises to be afantastic night with an array of inflatablesfor competitions, a tuck shop and a talkon “What would Jesus say to UsainBolt?” All teenagers are welcome.

Saturday morning, we will have a FunRun around the Crescent (exactly amile). You are welcome to either run orwalk, rollerblade or push a buggy. Wehope that the whole community will getinvolved! The sponsored Fun Run willraise funds for the upkeep of thefacilities at St Paul’s Church/Pre-Schooland Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice, alocal charity providing practicaland emotional support to life-limitedand life-threatened children andtheir families. We are delighted thatprizes and a short presentation will begiven by our local MP David Burrowes(who also hopes to participate inthe Fun Run!).

Then, at 12 noon, our St Paul’s Pre-School, which is celebrating its tenthbirthday this year, will be hosting a “Mini

Obstacle Course” for children agedunder 5.

Light refreshments will be served from11am to 4pm and those wishing to bringa picnic are welcome to use the facilitiesin the grounds.

At 2pm, there will be an ‘It’s a KnockOut’ competition held in the Churchgrounds. Teams made up of 8 people willcompete against each other. Each teamwill need at least two team members tobe over the age of 30 and also two teammembers under the age of 10 which willencourage the entire community to getinvolved. Instead of throwing the hammeror putting the shot, there will be theHadley Wood Golden Wellington thatwill be thrown; and instead of thepentathlon, participants will engage insuch skills as Connect Four, a briefTrivia on sport and Hadley Wood andgoing over an inflatable obstacle course. It will be a fantastic event to participatein, and amusing to watch, so bringthe whole family and friends to cheeron your teams.
