CONSISTS OF:

1. Upper Respiratory System: consists of the nose, mouth, pharynx, epiglottis, and larynx

2. Lower Respiratory System: Trachea, bronchi, bronchial tree, bronchioles, alveoli, lungs, diaphragm

Function of the Respiratory System:

-Brings oxygen from the air into the body and expels carbon dioxide from the body.

-Works with the circulatory system

Parts of the Upper Respiratory System:

-Mucus Membranes: Lining of the respiratory tract that secrete mucus

-Mucus: slimy secretion that helps to warm, moisten, and filter air

-Cilia: tiny, wave-like hairs that line the nostrils and help to filter air

-Pharynx: passageway shared by the digestive and res-piratory system

-Epiglottis: tiny flap that covers the larynx during swal-lowing

-Larynx: “voice box”, contains vocal cords that vibrate when air passes through

Different Types of Breathing:

-Inhalation: drawing in of a breath

-Exhalation: release of a breath

-Apnea: not breathing

-Dyspnea: difficulty breathing

-Bradypnea: abnormally slow breathing rate

-Trachypnea: abnormally fast breathing rate

-Respiration: exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide gases in the lungs

3

Parts of the Lower Respiratory System:

-Trachea: “windpipe”, it has cartilage that keeps its shape -Bronchi: Branches at the bottom of the trachea that are contained in the lungs. Singular: bron-chus. -Bronchial Tree: term describing how branches of the bronchi get continually smaller, like tree branches -Bronchioles: smallest branches of the bronchial tree-Alveoli: grape like clusters at the end of the bron-chioles where exchange of gases occurs-Diaphragm: a muscle located below the lungs that contracts causing the lungs to fill with air

RESPIRATORY CONDITIONS IN ELEPHANTS:

1. Tuberculosis: it is an airborne disease that spreads through tiny droplets in the air

2. Symptoms include chronic weight loss, lack of appetite, nasal discharge, coughing, intolerance to exercise, and drinking excessively.

3. Found mostly in asian elephants.
