A Joyful Occasion…

Josh and Breann celebrated their lovely and original themed wedding in the bride’s hometown in North Dakota, USA. The charming couple had only one month to plan their wedding before moving overseas, and their inspiration were the lovely shoes worn by Breann during the wedding ceremony. They had a small ceremony followed by a dinner reception with their closest family and friends. After the wedding ceremony a classic 1967 Chevy Impala SS belonging to the father of the bride awaited Joush and Breann, which were escorted away by the best man and maid of honour. The newlyweds also hosted a Halloween Themed costume party to continue the reception in order to celebrate this memorable day in the most fun and unique way.

“Life of Pi” Swoops the Oscars

The 85th Academy Awards took place at the end of February and as always it was a night filled with excitement as all the productions of the past year were up for nomination of the famous golden statue award. This year saw very tough competition between the films, with “Argo” winning the Best Picture award, produced by Ben Affleck, George Clooney and Grant Heslov; other movies nominated in the same category were “Lincoln”, “Amour”, “Life of Pi”, “Django Unchained”, and “Zero Dark Thirty” among others.

“Brave” the 2012 American computer-animated fantasy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures took home the best Animated Feature Film award. Anne Hathaway also won the golden statue for Actress in a Supporting Role for the musical “Les Miserables” and Christoph Waltz won the Best Supporting Actor award for “Django Unchained”, which also gave the opportunity for Quentin Tarantino to win an award for Best Original Screenplay.

However, all the buzz is about the movie, based on the 2001 novel by Yann Martel “Life of Pi”, set in the mid-1970s in the town of Puducherry, a former French colony in India. Mr. Lee shot the film in Puducherry, as well as the hill station of Munnar in Kerala state and in Taiwan.

Centered on the adventures of Pi, short for Piscine Molitor Patel, “Life of Pi” brings together fantasy and mysticism as an older Pi (Khan) recounts two alternate versions of his time on a boat with a tiger, named Richard Parker. The young Pi’s family owns a zoo in Pondicherry, but upon selling it to the local government, decides to migrate to Canada. The family and the animals from the zoo embark on their journey to Canada but meet with disaster on the ocean. The story is a retelling of that fateful journey, based on the older Pi’s recollections of what transpired. There is a strong spiritual undercurrent to the story, with the idea of God a central theme.

“Life of Pi” was the highest-grossing Hollywood film in India in 2012, pulling in $17 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Worldwide, it grossed more than $583 million

at the box office as of February 24.

While no Indian film was up for nomination in the 85th annual Academy Awards, Taiwan-born Ang Lee’s win in the Best Director category for “Life of Pi’’ ensured a national connection to this year’s Oscars. The movie also won an award for Original Score. Michael Dynna accepted the award and thanked his Indian-born wife, Aparna, and their two boys. Additionally the film took home Oscars for both Cinematography and Visual Effects. Some of the visual effects for the film were done in Mumbai and Hyderabad, at the offices of Rhythm & Hues Studios, which is headquartered in California. “Pi’s Lullaby,” sung by Jayashri Ramnath, a Carnatic music singer popularly known as Bombay Jayashree, was up for Best Song, but it lost to Adele Atkins for the James Bond theme song, “Skyfall.”

Dame Helen Mirren

Born on July 26, 1945, in London England, Helen Mirren pursued stage work before debuting in film during the ‘60s. A versatile, highly skilled actress, Mirren has starred in many movies, including Cleopatra, Caligula, Excalibur, Calendar Girls and The Last Station. She was lauded for her lead role in the series Prime Suspect and she has portrayed Queen Elizabeth I and II, winning an Oscar for the latter role.

Mirren was attracted to theater at an early age, finding her inspiration at the age of 13 at an amateur production of Hamlet. Mirren was steered away from the career by her parents, and was instead sent to St. Bernard’s High School, a Catholic convent, in Southend-On-Sea. An English teacher at St. Bernard’s, who happened on a recruiting circular for the National Youth Theatre, urged Helen to audition for the troupe. She did, and at the age of 18 was accepted into the company. At the urgings of her mother, however, Mirren entered a London teaching college in order to learn a stable profession.

By age 20, however, Mirren was starring as Cleopatra in the 1965 production of Antony and Cleopatra. Her performance as the Egyptian leader landed her an agent, as well as a place with the Royal Shakespeare Company. After many appearances she later starred in the fantasy film Excalibur (1981), which was based on the legend of King Arthur. But it was her role in the film Cal (1984) that landed Mirren her first major film awards: The Cannes Film Festival prize for best actress, and a British Academy of Film and Television Arts Award. In 1985, Mirren was cast in White Nights; she worked on the film with director Taylor Hackford, and soon began seeing him off the set, which she later married in 1997.

Mirren’s film career was heating up, and in 1996 she earned her first Academy Award nomination for The Madness of King George, a film that investigates King George III’s gradual descent into insanity. Madness also earned Mirren her second Best Actress win at Cannes, and yet another BAFTA award. Mirren continued to star in critically acclaimed film fare, including the British mystery Gosford Park (2001), which led to Mirren’s second Academy Award nomination, as well as another Golden Globe nod. Her string of award-winning works also gained notice of Queen Elizabeth and, in 2003; Mirren was invested as a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

In 2007, Mirren finally gained a reputation as an A-List actress for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen. Her performance landed Mirren her first Oscar, and also earned her a Golden Globe for Best Actress. She then nabbed a Golden Globe and Emmy award for her performance as Queen Elizabeth I in the HBO movie Elizabeth I.

She has worked side by side with world-famed actors, and is a truly fascinating actress. Mirren has not let her age stop her, and will continue to tackle different and unique roles, which will undoubtedly captivate the audience.

The World’s Greatest Rock n Roll Band

Little did the Rolling Stones know how apt their name - inspired by the title of a Muddy Waters song, “Rollin’ Stone” - would turn out to be. Formed in 1962, they hold the record for longevity as a rock and roll band. Moreover, critical acclaim and popular consensus has accorded them the title of the “World’s Greatest Rock and Roll Band.”

Throughout five decades of shifting tastes in popular music, the Stones have kept rolling, adapting to the latest styles without straying from their roots as a lean, sinuous rock and roll band with roots in electric blues and Chuck Berry-style rock and roll. In all aspects, theirs has been a remarkable career.

The Rolling Stones’ origins date back to the boyhood friendship of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, forged in 1951. Their acquaintance was interrupted when both families moved in the mid-Fifties but got rekindled in October 1960, when the two ran into each other at a train station and Richards noticed the imported R&B albums Jagger was carrying under his arm. Jagger, a student at the London School of Economics, was a hardcore blues aficionado, while Richards’ interest leaned more toward Chuck Berry-style rock and roll. Richards soon joined Jagger’s group, Little Boy Blue and the Blue Boys.

While making the rounds of London blues clubs, Jagger and Richards met guitarist Brian Jones, a member of Blues Incorporated. Soon, the trio of Jagger, Richards and Jones became roommates and musical collaborators. When Alexis Korner skipped one of his regular Marquee gigs to appear on a BBC radio show, Jagger, Jones and Richards seized the opportunity to debut their new group. And so it came to pass that the earliest version of the Rolling Stones – which also included bassist Dick Taylor, drummer Mick Avory and keyboardist Ian Stewart (the Stones’ lifelong road manager and adjunct member)

- made their first public appearance on July 12th, 1962.

Throughout the sixties the Rolling Stones released countless albums and were on their way to stardom. Their 1966 album Aftermath was the first Rolling Stones album to consist entirely of Jagger-Richards originals. At mid-decade, the three pre-eminent forces in popular music were the Beatles, Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones. They mutually influenced one another, and aspects of Dylan’s folk-rock and the Beatles’ similar turn in that direction with Rubber Soul were clearly evident on the Stones’ Between the Buttons, which appeared in 1967. It remains the group’s most baroque and understated recording. After the release of Flowers, an album that compiled stray tracks for the American market, the Stones unleashed the bombastic psychedelia of Their Satanic Majesties Request. It was the group’s portentous retort to the Beatles’ Summer of Love manifesto, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. It also marked the last time that the Stones would blatantly shadow the Beatles in a stylistic sense.

In 1971, the Stones launched their own record company, Rolling Stones Records, for which they signed a distribution deal with Atlantic Records. The initial releases on the new label were Sticky Fingers and its raunchy, rocking first single, “Brown Sugar.” With a cover designed by artist Andy Warhol that featured a working

zipper, Sticky Fingers’ benefited from guitarist Taylor’s melodic touch, especially on “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking” and “Moonlight Mile.” British designer John Pasche came up with the famous red “tongue” logo that remains a Stones icon to this day.

The Eighties saw the Stones achieve their highest-charting album (Tattoo You, #1 for nine weeks in 1981) but also take the longest period between tours (eight years). They kicked off the decade with Emotional Rescue, which

included straight-ahead rockers like “She Was Hot,” as well as curveballs like the falsetto-sung title track. “Tattoo You”, highlighted by the instant classics “Start Me Up” and “Waiting on a Friend,” remains among the most revered of all late-period Stones albums. Undercover, from 1983, took a more contemporary tack, especially on the outré, New Wavish single “Undercover of the Night.”

At mid-decade, Jagger launched a solo career with the release of “She’s the Boss”. A growing estrangement between Jagger and Richards culminated in a three-year lull after the release of “Dirty Work” (1986), during which another solo release from Jagger (Primitive Cool) and Richards’ own solo debut (Talk Is Cheap) were released. The standoff ended when Jagger and Richards resumed their working relationship during a ten-day songwriting retreat in Barbados, resulting in the creative resurgence of the “Steel Wheels” album and tour.

In 2002, The Rolling Stones issued “Forty Licks”, a double-disc retrospective that appended four new tracks. Their 40th anniversary tour followed that same year. In 2005 came “A Bigger Bang”, their only studio album of new material in the decade. The Stones’ primary activity came on the touring front, as their two-year “A Bigger Bang World Tour” set a new record ($558 million) for concert grosses. Not even a serious head injury, sustained by Richards during a fall from a coconut palm in Fiji could stop the juggernaut for long.

The Stones celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2012. They released yet another greatest-hits album, “GRRR!”. The album included two new tracks, “Doom and Gloom” and “One More Shot.” On October 25, they played a surprise show to about 600 people in Paris. They also announced that they would be playing shows in London, New Jersey and Brooklyn.

Through their five decades as a band, no one has yet stripped the Rolling Stones of their title as the World’s Greatest Rock & Roll Band.

Tina Turner Simply

the Best

Born November 26, 1939 in Tennessee USA as Anna Mae Bullock, better known to the world as Tina Turner, took the Rock n Roll world by storm. She is a singer, dancer, and actress, whose career has spanned more than half a century, earning her widespread recognition and numerous awards. Turner’s music career began in the mid 1950s as a featured singer with Ike Turner’s Kings of Rhythm. Her first appearance under the stage name Tina Turner began in the early 1960s with Ike as a member of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue. Much success followed with a string of hits including River Deep – Mountain High (1961) and Proud Mary (1971).

In 1974 Turner converted her religion to Buddhism, crediting the religion and its spiritual chants for getting her through difficult times in her life. Following her divorce from Ike Turner in 1978, she rebuilt her career by constantly performing, eventually launching another series of hits starting in 1983 with the single Let’s Stay Together and the 1984 release of her fifth solo album Private Dancer. What’s Love Got to Do With It was the most popular single from the album, would later serve as the title of a biographical film about Turner that was adapted from her autobiography. Apart from her successful music career, Turner has also experienced success in movies, including a role in the 1975 rock musical, Tommy and a staring role in the 1985 action movie, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome along side Mel Gibson amongst others.

Turner has been called the most successful female rock artist of our time, she is one of the world’s most popular entertainers, winning 8 Grammys and selling more concert tickets than any other solo performer in history. Her combined album and single sales total approximately 200 million copies worldwide. Turner has also been named “one of the greatest singers of all time” by Rolling Stone.

She is known for her energetic stage presence, powerful vocals, career longevity, and widespread appeal. In 2008, Turner left semi-retirement to embark on her Tina!: 50th Anniversary Tour. Rolling Stone ranked her at 63 on their 100 greatest artists of all time and considers her the “Queen of Rock and Roll” as does the New York Times, Oprah Winfrey, Elton John, Mick Jagger and Cher.

1980 was a very successful period for Turner, as she began to release many solo albums, and featured alongside many famous musicians such as Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, and Bryan Adams amongst others. Furthermore in 1988 Turner even made history alongside Paul McCartney when she performed in front of the largest paying audience (approx. 184000) in Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Beazil, earning her a Guinness World Record. The success of Turner’s two live tours led to the recording of Tina Live in Europe.

She then released solo album Foreign Affair, which included The Best, one of Turner’s signature songs. This particular album became a huge success in Europe, where she embarked on a Europe only tour to promote the album. She then relocated and currently lives in Switzerland.

Continuing her success, in 1995 Turner also composed together with U2 the soundtrack for the James Bond movie Golden Eye. The track was a huge hit in Europe and the USA. Before Celebrating her 60th birthday, Turner released the album Twenty Four Seven, releasing the dance infused song When the Heartache Is Over. The 247 Tour became Turner’s most successful concert tour to date and became the highest-grossing tour of 2000 according to Pollstar grossing over $100 million. Later, Guinness World Records announced that Turner had sold more concert tickets than any other solo concert performer in music history. In early 2000 Turner decided to announce a semi retirement period. In 2008 embarked on her first tour in 10 years with the Tina!: 50th Anniversary Tour. The tour was a huge success and a live album/DVD Tina Live was also released.

Following her divorce from Ike Turner, Tina decided to remain single as she struggled to get her career back on track. In 1985, she met her current partner, German-based music executive Erwin Bach, while at a record label party in London. After a year, Turner and Bach began dating and have remained together since. Turner has been living in a lake house called Chateau Algonquin in Zurich, Switzerland since 1994, also owning properties in Los Angeles, residencies in London, Germany and a villa on the French Riviera, Anna Fleur. In 2012, after living in Switzerland for 20 years, Turner applied for Swiss citizenship, which was granted in January 2013.

Today aged 73 Turner has a very memorable past to remember, and not to mention the countless of awards she won for her hard work. Even though she has retired as a performer, she is still remembered as the “Queen of Rock n Roll” and is still admired by her fans all over the world.

In today’s pop culture there are many artists worth mentioning, however one artist, which is always able to catch our attention and release a hit song almost everytime is Latino lover Enrique Iglesias.

Enrique Preysler Iglesias was born in Madrid, Spain, to Latin pop veteran Julio Iglesias and Isabel Preysler. Many people do not know that he is half Spanish and half Filipino. However, in 1979, his parent’s marriage was annulled. He was eight years old when he moved to the US, and at the age of 15, secretly began writing music.

He studied business administration at Miami University for a year before he dropped out to pursue a music career. Five years later, in 1995, he released his first album. His second album, which was recorded in Spanish, was released in 1997.

Enrique has released 9 albums. Insomniac was released 2008 and he sang the official song for the UEFA Euro Cup in 2008 “Can You Hear Me” the finale. After Insomniac he released a Greatest Hits album and went on tour 2009. His latest album Euphoria was his first bilingual album with Spanish and English songs.

Enrique is the first Latin artist to have the most #1 singles on Latin Billboard Charts history and he has won countless awards and has had countless Grammy nominations. He has also teamed up with various famous artists such as Whitney Houston, Pitbull, Ludacris, Lil Wayne, Nicole Scherzinger, Kelis, Wisin y Yandel among others, making a very diverse artist. Over the years he has also changed his style of music.

His love life has also been quite a busy one, having dated Sofia Vergara, Samantha Torres, Alicia Machado, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Love Hewitt and not to mention blonde bomb shell Anna Kournikova, which appeared in his 2002 hit song “Escape”.

Enrique Iglesias’ live concerts are also worth mentioning, as not only do millions of fans attend but also in every show he must always choose one girl to passionately sing too and kiss.

He has had a very successful career over the years, and he is known for his passionate style of singing, Latin charisma and good looks. Fans around the globe are sure to experience many more concerts and album releases from this Latino heartthrob.

It’s been a long-established cliché that music is the universal language. To be fair, there’s no better way of putting it.

I was raised with a permanent soundtrack in my life and personally cannot recall a day without listening to or striving to find new music. However, in recent years, I feel the integrity of what can be called “music” has been very heavily tested. With the advents of the Internet and the exploding popularity of social networks such as Facebook, Youtube and Spotify – there are more artists and musicians than one can count, and something out there for everyone’s taste. Some well-deserved examples, but for the majority: not so much. Before I continue, I must state that unfortunately, (or maybe not), my tastes don’t fall in step with the current mainstream: for example – I find the inception of dubstep to be one of the worst creative disasters of the 21st century. Nothing personal, it’s just an opinion.

As for where my preferences lie – we have to turn the history books back to nearly half a century ago; before the age of Youtube, iPod’s, CD players, the Internet or even MTV. One particular case, that still resounds to this day, is The SCORPIONS. With a collective age of over 300 years between 5 band members, 35 studio albums in just under 5 decades, a myriad of enduring hits and classics – the fact that the band is still going strong, albeit on their last ever tour, is what places them in the context of no less than legendary. This is a true story of success and everything that comes and goes with it – a fable to be told, retold, and to inspire.

Danny shares his views on the entertainment industry and how it has changed over the years. This issue he speaks about the famed rock band Scorpions, which he grew up listening to. Danny has collaborated with Alkoun Superstar and will be giving us an insight to the film and music industry.

The Early Years

In the 60s, driven and inspired by the immortal oeuvres of the Beatles, Cream, Spooky Tooth, The Yardbirds and the likes – teenagers Klaus Meine and Rudi Schenker, in the then-West Germany city of Hanover, sought to become the towering equivalents of said idols, and to be the first world-famous rock-stars to come out of their native country. After several years of fronting their own respective bands, a prolonged period of sharing stages at low-key gigs and underground clubs - the two youths joined forces in 1970 and formed the first incarnation of what would become the SCORPIONS.

Their first album, Lonesome Crow, released in 1972, was a beautifully chaotic representation of the state of German rock music at the time. As singer Klaus Meine once stated in an interview – “We were just a young band with talented guys, with no idea on where to go from here.” The entirety of the album featured as a soundtrack to the controversial anti-drag film Das Kalte Paradise, and is what propelled the band to early local success.

The next 5 years would bring 5 albums that created instant hits, crushed expectations and spawned controversy over the explicit album cover designs. This would be one of the primary factors behind their early difficulty in breaking into America. Nevertheless, the band was renowned throughout Europe and Asia, and in 1978 they released their first live

concert recording – Tokyo Tapes. The following year, 1979, proved to be the first pivotal move of their careers – with the appointment of young guitarist Matthias Jabs to replace the long-serving Uli Roth, who left the band on account of creative differences. Matthias remains the sole lead guitarist until today, making up the final piece of the band’s permanent creative trio.

The Glorious 80s

Lovedrive (1979) marks the band’s transition from their initial Hendrix-esque sound to a more solid foundation in commercial hard rock. It spawned their first true mega-hit “Holiday” and the follow up, Animal Magnetism (1980), consolidated their sound, to which the West was just starting to turn an ear.

It might have taken ten years to strike gold – but the release of 1982’s Blackout and Love At First Sting, two years later, would place the SCORPIONS exactly where they dreamt of being – riding the very crest of the most beautiful wave in rock history. This was the difference between playing underrated clubs, and sold-out arenas. “Rock You Like A Hurricane” became an enduring battle cry, whilst “Still Loving You” remains one of the most haunting and beloved rock ballads to this day, a signature stamp in the band’s live sets, and even a trigger for France’s baby boom of 1984.

4 years of successful touring, spreading the message of love through their music, and on the back of the success of their 1988 glam-rock album Savage Amusement the Scorpions became amongst the first foreign bands to be

invited to the Soviet Union, first as guests – then as performers for the Moscow Music Peace Festival in 1989. Imagine that, a German band being personally invited to the Kremlin at the very détente of the Cold War.

Bittersweet Winds of Change

This experience inspired Klaus Meine to write their immortal magnum opus – “Wind of Change” – a song recognized the world over simply from that first airy chord, the gentle whistling, and the undying message of peace and hope it brought in tow. I experienced this song live, for the first time, in Doha during their Acoustic tour of the Middle East in 2005. The only word that comes to mind is sublime.

The album that contained said classic, 1990’s Crazy World was also the final album released by the golden lineup of Meine, Schenker, Jabs, Buccholz and Rarebell – a collaboration that lasted over 15 years. Bassist Francis Buccholz left in 1992 followed by drummer Herman Rarebell in 1993.

Throughout the 90s, with a new and fresh rhythm section, the guys attempted to reinvent their sound. With the changing times, the SCORPIONS tried to keep up by testing out new styles of music – from molten hard and heavy rock, to melodic alternative, to experimental pop. Some attempts were successful – some not so much. Their controversial pop-driven record Eye II Eye (1999) is still considered to be a mistake by most die-hard fans, however one can still find a few genuine gems, a la “Skywriter” or “Ten Lightyears Away”.

By the turn of the millennium, they decided to change their approach to their music, and embarked on several projects to revamp their status and revive several hits. In 2000, they recorded both an album and DVD with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (I don’t like using this word – but this

set is absolutely EPIC), and then absolutely countered the grandeur by stripping the music all the way back, and going acoustic.

Unbreakable

After a long, agonizing wait – came 2004’s Unbreakable, which can be considered the absolute culmination of the band’s career up to that point, expressing both fist-pumping, hard-hitting headbangers, as well as piano-driven melodic ballads. This was topped off by 2007’s experimental yet unparalleled release Humanity – Hour 1 and signed and sealed with their last original release Sting In The Tail in 2010.

There’s a song on the latter, the last song on their “last” album titled “The Best Is Yet To Come” – a song probably just as powerful as “Wind of Change”. In it, Klaus sings of an optimistic future, whether musically or generally, and encapsulates the attitude that has driven the guys for a span of nearly 50 years. It’s the genuine love of making good, real music that has kept them from falling by the wayside like so many of their contemporaries.

The SCORPIONS touring days are now officially behind them, and maybe that’s a good thing – I believe it was Neil Young who once said “It’s Better to Burn Out than Fade Away”, and I know for a fact that Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) seconded the notion. Nevertheless, they do still plan to continue putting out music. The next official release promises to be a 21st Century recovery of old songs that never made it onto their two most successful albums – Blackout and Love at First Sting, to be released around 2013 or 2014. The SCORPIONS’ story is a literal definition of true success – not some whirlwind rise to fame that would potentially leave them disorientated

for the rest of their careers, only to drown in the shallow waves of the mainstream. Current pop/media/internet sensations will never have such a sense of grandeur or true artistry to them (save a very select deserving few), because they simply do not have the caliber behind them. Where bands from that old generation would walk through hell and high water, just to be heard – all one needs nowadays is a thousand clicks of a button by a generation that increasingly chooses to ignore history in favor of short term sensations. The accessibility isn’t a bad thing – the superficiality it brings with it – is. Times do change, sure – as do tastes – but it doesn’t mean that standards should too. If they do, they should only be taken higher, and not be dropped down to a primitive level where we choose spectacle over substance, and continue to have our intelligence insulted.

In that spirit, real music (made by real musicians, and not “producers” with drum machines) will continue to thrive in the face of all this watered down adversity.

Marking 100 Years of Cinema

Like most things in India, the origins and history of cinema in India is quite fascinating. Fascinating - because the origins of cinema started sometime in 1890s and not 1913, as it is popularly known now. In 1896 the Luemiere brothers came to Bombay to showcase short films. For the European population as well as the Indians who were present at the screening, the concept of moving images was simply fascinating.

HS Bhatavdekar popularly known as Save Dada, a photographer by profession was one the privileged few to have witnessed the films made by Luemiere brothers in 1896. Soon after, Bhatavdekar procured a movie camera from London and went on to document day-to-day events, which eventually made for India’s first silent short film in 1897. The origins of India’s three most prominent film industries can be traced to these years when European exhibitors showcased foreign films in Bombay (1896), Madras (1897) and Calcutta (1898).

Heavily influenced after watching ‘The Life of Christ’, photographer and printing press owner Dhundiraj Govind Phalke wondered why there were no Indian films based on the Hindu Mythology. Phalke released ‘Raja Harishchandra’ in Bombay in 1913, and thus India got its first feature film. ‘Raja Harishchandra’ also was the first silent film, which was screened in Coronation Cinema in Mumbai for the public. Till then films that were being made were viewed by only certain section of the society. The first film starred an actor called DD Dabke, who went on to remake ‘Raja Harishchandra’ again in 1924. As the society was a closed and conservative one, women were not allowed to act and male actors played female characters in the film.

Even though the films lacked dialogues, the visual delight made the features captivating. The love stories that India films heavily bank upon now also had its origins in the silent era. Dhiren Ganguly produced the first love story called ‘Bilet Ferot’ in 1921. By 1920s India was producing more than 27 films a year- a big number for that era.

In 1931 Ardeshir Irani released ‘Alam Ara’ the first speaking film in Indian history. When the

film was released in Mumbai’s Majestic Cinema, the police had to be summoned to control the hysterical crowd who had come to watch the film. The talkies changed the face of Indian cinema. Apart from looks, the actors not only needed a commanding voice but also singing skills, as music became a defining element in Indian cinema.

Since the first talkie, Indian cinema has changed dramatically as the world has become a global village, the Indian film industry has reached out further to international audiences. One must also keep in mind that Bollywood is the informal term popularly used for the Hindi-language film industry based in Mumbai. The term is often incorrectly used to refer to the whole of Indian cinema; however, it is only a part of the total Indian film industry, which includes other production centres producing films in multiple languages. Bollywood is the largest film producer in India and one of the largest centres of film production in the world.

To celebrate 100 years of cinema in India, the Government of India, in cooperation with the film industry, has proposed to line up a host of activities between May 3, 2012 and May 3, 2013. Indian cinema, despite all its peculiarities, has been a reflection of the socio-economic, political and cultural changes that took place in the country.

Stylishly put together by Mala Kumar, the wife of the Ambassador of India, Dr. Mohan Kumar, the evening will pay loving tribute to the most prolific film industry in the world with a mix of classy culture, fabulous song-and-dance and celebrity presence. The gala night is titled “Celebrating A Century Of Bollywood” and will be held under the patronage of the Embassy of India at the Gulf Convention Centre’s Al Dana Ballroom in the Gulf Hotel.

The Venetian Carnival Comes to Bahrain

The Italian Bahraini Friendship Association (IBFA), under the patronage of the Italian Embassy of Bahrain, hosted the 3rd edition of the Grand Italian Ball on the 21st of March 2013, at the Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa. Like last year guests enjoyed an Italian traditional menu. Entertainement was provided by Ludica Antiqua who organized professional singers, dancers and musicians from Italy to successfully recreate the magic atmosphere of the Venetian Carnival. Many of the guests also adorned traditional Venetian costumes and masks, which further highlighted the Carnival theme. Special thanks goes to Sabrina De Polo for sharing her photos with us.

Iro Smith hosted a charity High tea birthday party for her lady friends at the Capital Club last December. The money collected at the event was donated to support the Elderly Home of Bahrain (Nadia Ajar) and the Home for Abused women in Athens, Greece (Irini Dorkofiki). Guests from Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Greece, enjoyed a fabulous high tea and the magnificent views while listening to Danae Pallikoropoulos sing Opera. Iro’s speech emphasized the importance of friendships and support among women.

Iro’s daughter Artist Christine Smith flew in for the occasion from Greece, presenting her mother with a beautiful painting, a representation of Iro’s three children.

Iro, a consecutive 28 year resident of Aramco in Dhahran, and now of Bahrain, is a very active member of the Community, and known for her Generous Greek Macedonian spirit, has initiated the Hellenic Community of Greece and Cyprus in Bahrain, which with the support of many other Greek and Cypriots in Bahrain, are working hard to promote the exchange of Cultures between Bahrain and Greece.

Iro is in preparation for a Greek Cultural night on the 23rd of May, that promises to entice and excite everyone that will attend.
