TACONIC RUNNING LIFE May 1997 Church/Jaworski Take Mudders & Grunters.. .Again Joy Jaworksi (left) & Tom Church (right) are congratulated by race director, Owen McCrudden. -photo by K. Qiihm A group of hearty souls turned out for the annual running of Mudders and Grunters, but some might say Tom Church "owns" this race. Tom defended his Mudders and Grunters title (for the 5th? consecutive year) by pacing the Held in a time of 32:06 on a very "brisk" morning. (Most described it as COLD!) Tom also brought along the team that took home the Geronimo Cup, and he stayed to help Owen load up all the equipment at the end of the race. Way to leave your mark on a race, Tom! Joy Jaworski turned in an impressive 37:42 to repeat as the women's champ. Both winners picked out "tasty" trophies and are expected back to try for the "sweet taste of victory" again next year! Full race results and some fun photos are inside. We hope you've had a chance to see the video-tape produced by Brad Leach and Jack Brennan. It as a day to remember. Families Frolick At Freezing St. Pat's Day Races The Davis' and Whelans succeeded in once again serving up an Irish good time at the St. Patrick's Day races. The complimentary stocking caps (Thanks, Bob!) were most apparent this year, as participants bundled up against the cold. The annual affair saw many families, like Rich and Andrea Nash (right) turn out for some fun, exercise and a chance to win a trip to Ireland. See details, 10k results and photos inside. P R E S I D E N T SC O L U M N

The wonderful monthsof Spring are here. I mustconfess that I love runningthis time of year. The flowe r s a r e b l o o m i n g a n d t h e ^trees that didn't fall on April 1 are starting to showgreenery. But, the real sign of Spring is that everyrunning publication has a new running shoe surveyand introduction of new styles. I hope you enjoyreading them as much as I do, especially the little noteat the end that recommends if the current shoe you arewearing works, then stay with it. Ha! - Nike, AsicsSaucony, etc. change every style that is popularalmost twice a year. Ah. the perils and adventures ofrunning.

I must also confess that writing this column thismonth was not easy. There were so many races andevents going on that it would make your head spin. There was the oh-so-cold-but-very- successful andwell-run St. Patrick's Day Races and the best-trail-runof the year: Mudders and Grunters. I loved the trailrace so much that the following week, 1 drove toReading, PA for the Mt. Penn Mudfest, whichnaturally (?) led to the Backwards Mile in CentralPark on April Fools day, of course. Still more: Webegan our Track work outs on Wednesday. April 8th,followed by our scoring of the Rye Derby, and a fewof us venturing to D.C. to run the Cherry Blossom 10Miles, and "Sybi l", our wonderful 50K ultra-marathon, commemorating Sybil Ludington's famousride, and team races in Queens for some of us andfinally, the Leatherman's Loop for those of us whol o v e M U D .

Races that we are busy promoting andorganizing are Mother's Day, The North County NewslOK and Lincoln Hall,..are you dizzy yet?

Come on and jump on the bandwagon. Volunteerfor a DAY AT THE RACES or help with pre- or post-race errands. Try volunteering! You'll feel more apart of TRRC. So, come on everyone. Give a little -or a lot of time. It's each and everyone of you thatmake this club as great as it is. Give me a call anytimeat work (914) 592-3005 or home (914) 244-8544. I'mlooking forward to talking to everyone.

Happy Feet!L e e

By Debra KenneyMudders and Grunters is my favorite race. Why? 1

don't know. I must need my head examined. Maybe it'snever knowing what crazy obstacles race director, OwenMcGrudden, is going to come up with, Or perhaps it's thekindness of my fellow Taconics who volunteer at this raceevery year and beg to be stationed next to Owen's streamcrossing, just so they can laugh their heads off at everyonewho falls in. And, by the way, anyone who plans to run thisrace should know that someone always has a video camerastationed at the stream crossing. They film everyone'sgraceful stream crossing. Then the tape is played at futuremeetings for all the Taconics who didn't have the opportunityto watch the stream crossing in person. They laugh again!Kind souls.

This year, once again, Owen did not let me down. Itwas probably the coldest Mudders and Grunters that 1 haveever done. 1 think the temperature was in the 20's, and it was

very windy! The course was muddy and slimy. There wereplenty of hills to run up, brambles to push through, logs tojump over and I even got to see a smiling Owen standing ontop of one of the hills asking me if 1 was having fun yet!! Itried every survival tactic I could. 1 even tried to stay rightbehind the Ossining police officer (Fm sorry, I don't know hisname), figuring he was well versed in rescue procedures. (No,no! He is NOT the one that got lost during the Taconics'famed Lost Weekend Cross Country Relay Race lastDecember.) Then came the dreaded stream crossing. Therewas a yellow rope strung across the stream. Was Owen gettingsoft?? Was it a trick? Nope. 1 grabbed on and it actuallyhelped me not fall in! 1 can't wait til next March, when theMudders and Grunters race rolls around again.

Owen McCrudden wishes to thank, sincerely, all thevolunteers who came out to help - before, during and after therace. He also wants everyone to know that next year, THEREW I L L B E N O R O P E ! !

1997 Geronimo Cup WinnersTom Church (center) and Hash House

Harrier Friends were awarded the Geronimo Cup asthe first team to finish this year's Mudders andGrunters trail race. The "traveling trophy" has foundits home with Tom Church on more than oneoccas ion .

The "muddiest & bloodiest" awards werenot given out this year, because contestants found itmore reasonable to dry off and put on warm clothesthan wait around in the frigid temps forjudges tosurvey the effects of this year's course. Additionally, many found that their mud and blood were washedoff by the cold dip in the stream along the course.

Brian Wheaton was awarded an extra beerfor the most appreciated race gift: fire wood! Thanks, Brian!

Eris Go B-r-r-r-r-ragh!By Jim Whalen & Boh Davis

Was this a St. Patrick's Day Race or a Freezer #6? Itwas a bright sunny day with 25 degree temperature and awind chill in the single digits. This however, would not stopalmost 350 hardy sons and daughters of St. Patrick in participating in the Annual lOK and 2 Mile Fun Run on 3/16/97.

Heading the lOK, with a finish of 35.07, wasArmondo Oliveria, age 29, of New Rochelle. He wasfollowed by Chuck Creel, age 35, of Yorktown, seven secondslater, and Alonso Rendon, age 25, in 35:25. Tara Maguire, age 27, was the first woman finisher and twelfth place overallin 38:15. She was followed by Emmy Stocker, age 38. ofGreenwich in 40:43 and Barbara Brittan, age 36, ofPleasantv i l le in 42:43.

Over fifty laconic volunteers helped provide music, food, fire and liquid refreshments for the cold but happycrowd. The tickets to Ireland were won by Peggy Boyle ofPatterson, NY, who has relatives in Ireland whom she has notseen since visiting them at age 13. Numerous other prizeswere awarded,

A special thanks to our bagpiper, to Grimes TravelAgency in White Plains, who assisted in obtaining the tickets,to Club Fit and all other contributors. A special thanks toEileen Davis, without whose help the race would not have runso smoothly.

Additionally, it is noted that several hardy Taconicsstayed to "tend the fire," despite the cold, until all the liquidrefreshments were gone: Owen, Fred & Pat L., Ed, Lee, TomC. and Jack B. Erin go h-r-r-r-nigh!

Applying To The New York City IVIarathonIf you're hoping to be among the runners of the 1997 New York City Marathon, it is time to take action! An "'Application

Request Form" (NOT the NYC Marathon Application) is on this page. Filling this out is a first step on the quest for entrance into themarathon. Following are some steps to take and some information to consider if you want to be among the 29,000 entrants in thisyear's marathon.• May 10. 1997: Line up in Central Park between 12 Noon and 2 p.m. with the (completed) application below to receive an

application for the marathon,• Mid-May: NARC mails NYC marathon applications in the following order

Day I Requests received at the Central Park Line-up will be mailedDay 2 Requests received by mail/e-mail (http://www.nyrrc.org) on or before May 9th will be mailedDay 3, 4, 5 Requests received by mail/e-mail after May 9th will be mailed in the order received.

• Fill out and return your application with your payment immediately:16,000 applicants will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis*

-9,300 of whom will be selected from the tri-state (NY, NJ, CT) area;-6,700 of whom will be selected from all other states.

3,000 entries will be selected in a lottery held in mid-July10.000 will be reserved for international runners (selected through a quota system by country)

Additional entrants will be accepted from a Waiting List to replace those who cancel. Your name will be placed on the Waiting List ifyou are not chosen in the lotter>', or if you apply after the lottery has taken place. You must be 18 years of age or older on race day tobe accepted. All U.S. residents must have a 1997 USATF number.

*The first-come, first-serve allotment is divided into two sections based on geographic location. The proportions of tri-state and outof tri-state entrants are based on the actual geographic distribution of applications submitted in past years. This is to assure thatapplicants from outside our local area have an equal chance of being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, even though it takeslonger for mail to get to them, and they have little chance of taking part in the traditional Central Park Line-Up. By reserving aseparate allotment of entries, their chances wilt not be affected by the number of local runners who come to the Line-Up or by howquickly they return their applications.Tri-state area residents may participate in the Line-Up or request their applications by mail. Either way, there are no guarantees ofacceptance, but chances should be about the same as they have been in past years.
