Pastor’s Corner

My Dear Friends,

Each year, we welcome a member of a poor diocese or missionary group as part of the Missionary Cooperation Plan. This event is part of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, of which I’m the director for the Diocese of Raleigh.

Next weekend, we will have a guest speaker at all of our Masses who will speak on behalf of Mission Doctors Association. This group of Catholic physicians serves the poor in the United States, Africa, Papua New Guinea, Thailand, and Latin America. Our speaker will be Dr. Margarita Nuñez.

She will share the work of this nearly 60-year old organization, and her experience as Mission Doctors serving in Latin America.

Dr. Nunez served in Belize at Hillside Clinic along with her two teenage children. This location gave her the opportunity to provide direct patient care and training,

Since 1959, Mission Doctors Association has made it possible for Catholic physicians and their families to share their gifts and live their faith at mission hospitals in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Pacific.

A mission of healing and partnership of hope, Mission Doctors Association invites us to keep all the Mission Doctors in our prayers. Please consider supporting generously the lifesaving work of MDA. www.missiondoctors.org

Sincerely yours in Christ, - Father Bob

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary – July 22 and July 23, 2017 5

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time The Sister Isaac Center Mary Ann Kotas, Director Last week I spoke about the importance of the volunteers that keep the Center going. Likewise, the other half of the formula for our success is the donors. We are so blessed to be supported by so many! All of the financial aid we disburse on a daily basis comes from donations - some in the form of grants, the rest from individuals. This past month saw a wide variety of financial donations. A group of young school children, under the guise of a neighboring grandmother, held their annual “Art Sale”. This has been an annual event for a few years now. They work on their creations during the year, and on one Saturday morning, their artworks were hung on fence at a home nearby and offered for sale, for the benefit of the Center. One of the children came in with her grandmother and I was presented with their proceeds of $315. Another young boy came in with his parents; he brought in a donation of $46 – money he had received for his birthday. Once again, a gentleman that we had helped many years ago came in with his monthly donation of $50; he’s been doing this for several months now, in gratitude for help he had received when he needed it, and a wish to aid us in helping others. Our Senior Singles send in an envelope each month with a donation from their members, as does the St Thomas More Fraternity. Many other

individuals send in monthly donations ranging from $5 to a few hundred. We receive the proceeds from the Needy Boxes in church; several regulars drop in checks of varying amounts, others drop in cash: coins, dollar bills, tens, twenties – a couple of weeks ago there was a hundred dollar bill. The Knights brought in yet another large sum of money they received as donations during their latest food drive. We received a donation, via PayPal, from a visitor to our website. St Mark’s gifted us with a very sizeable check , earmarked to help families with children in the home. I hope you know that all of your donations of time or money or material goods are helping to make a difference in someone’s life. Thank you for sharing.

RCIA (Beverly Setz) RCIA will be starting their next session in the Fall. Please watch the bulletin for details beginning mid-September. You can also call the office at 910-762-5491 ext. 121 for more information.

Pope Francis has named Bishop Luis Zarama as the 6th Bishop of the Diocese of Raleigh. He will celebrate his official installation on August 29, 2017 at Holy Name of Jesus Ca-thedral. We wish him the very best in his new position! Bishop Luis Zarama was born in Pasto, Co-lombia, on November 28, 1958. sidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia, earning a degree in Canon Law.

He was a Philosophy and Theology professor at the Carmelites School, the Learning School and the Colombia Military School for eleven years. Bishop Zarama was ordained to the Roman Catholic Priesthood for the Archdiocese of Atlanta on November 27, 1993. His first assignment was as parochial vicar at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Atlanta. He served as a member of the Vocations Committee. Bishop Zarama was the first Hispanic priest to be named pastor in the Archdiocese of Atlanta to St. Mark Catholic Church in Clarksville, GA, and St. Helena Mission in Clayton GA. He was a board member of Habitat for Humani-ty in Habersham County in 2005. Bishop Zarama was named Vicar Gen-eral of the Archdiocese in April of 2006. REQUIRED ATHLETIC FORMS: If your child is considering par-ticipating on any of our athletic teams they must have the 3 required forms submitted before they can officially practice. The falls sports are: Girls Tennis, Co-ed Cross country, Girls Volleyball, Girls Cheer Leading

RETURN OF THE ST. MARY GOLF CLASSIC: I will be chang-ing the date of the St. Mary Golf classic. We WILL NOT be holding it on October 21, 2017. But instead I would like as many of you who have supported our classic to support the Knights Of Columbus golf outing in September. A portion of their profits will go to St. Mary Catholic School in the way of a scholarship for a needed family. Sup-port of their golf outing still goes to the well being of St. Mary School. My plans are to still hold our golf classic but not until the spring. I will pass the new date as soon as I can work it out. Don't worry, I will still be asking you to participate or volunteer to make it the best golf clas-sic we have ever held.

CONCESSION STAND SUPERVISOR: I am looking for a parent or group of parents to help organize and run the concession stand for home games next year. You would be working with me, so you would not be doing this alone. If you would like more information feel free to contact me.
