Pastor’s Corner My Dear Friends, This weekend, Catholic Christians celebrate the 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time.

On this day, we hear the story of Jesus going to dinner at the house of Mary and Martha, two of his friends. While Martha was busy trying to everything to prepare the meal and set the table, her sister Mary was sitting chatting with Jesus. This made Mary angry, for she thought her sister should be helping her. Jesus, though, told Martha to relax and not be anxious and worried. Then he told Martha that Mary had “chosen the better part…” Through the centuries, there have been religious communities that have taken this passage and, with great arrogance, tried to say that their contemplative life is superior to the apostolic or missionary life. That, of course is false, for all vocations are noble. Rather, this passage means we need to have a balanced spiritual life of both prayer and action This weekend, we welcome Notre Dame Sr. Lois Best as part of the annual Missionary Cooperation Plan talk. Each year, we have a missionary come to talk about the work they do. We then take a second collection. This money goes into a mission fund. After the summer is over, as the director of foreign missions for our diocese, I divide the money equally for each of the mission groups that have preached in the plan for this year. On Monday, July 18th, we honor the memory of St. Camillus de Lellis who lived from 1550 to 1614. We have named our parish’s Ministers who take Communion to the sick after St. Camillus who was a nurse, priest, and saint. Sincerely yours in Christ, - Father Bob

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary – July 16 and July 17, 2016 6

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Mary Social Ministry/Tileston Outreach Today we are treated to the story of Martha and Mary and each one of us during our lifetime is called to imitate their gifts. Sometimes we need to pour ourselves out in loving, caring service, while at other times we need to quiet down and be attentive and listen to what life is saying to us. It is all about balance, isn’t it? At this time of the year we are slowing down just a bit to take inventory of what the Outreach has been up to this fiscal year. During the month of August I will report on the various aspects of the Ministry in more detail. Debbie Cochrane is on the team that helps us keep up our stats. She also does quite a bit of child care. Last week she brought with her to the Office young Grace, who, though not yet ten, is quite good herself at pulling records, etc. Debbie finished one report and was excited to see that this year we helped over 7,000 people with food – what an accomplishment. But Grace came at the number with a different perspective and said, “Isn’t it a sad thing that 7,000 people had to come and ask for food for their family?” Now, that is some food for thought!

Sister Isaac—Office of Social Ministry

Special Need for the Week: As we prepare to close for the month of August when the Outreach will be cleaned and painted, we are only accepting hygiene articles at this time. If you can not save your clothing, furniture and appli-ances that you wish to donate until after Labor Day, I am certain that Full Gospel Rescue Mission, Salvation Army, Restore or Good Will would be happy to receive your donation. Thank you so much. Come September, we will be in need of volunteers to pick up food on the third Tuesday of the Month at Food Lion in Masonboro Com-mons. It is a hard job since coolers containing the food have to be carried down our stairs to the Food area in the Ministry. A large car, van or truck is needed to hold the coolers and two people doing it really helps. The commitment takes about two hours, once a month. If you are able to volunteer for this ministry, please call the Office at 762-5491 x135.

RCIA Even though it is summer, we are preparing for the RCIA process that will begin during the mid-dle of September. Please call John Walsh at the Parish Office if you are interested in becoming a member of our faith community. Comfort Committee Our newly re-organized committee that provides light refreshments for our families after a funeral is up and running. Special gratitude to Enid Jenski and her team for almost 30 years of service and we hope, under the chairmanship of Barbara McGowan, to continue to provide this wonderful service of compassion and caring.

Knights present special 'Holy Name' cross to Bishop Burbidge When Bishop Michael F. Burbidge trav-eled to the Knights of Columbus field and club on Friday, June 24, his mind was set on sharing time and prayer with young men trying to discern what God wants from them. He didn’t know that the day would end with a pleasant surprise that connected the past with the future. Knights from the Father Thomas Price Council presented Bishop Burbidge with the cross that, more than 50 years ago, sat atop the steeple of the Holy Name of Jesus Chapel, which was part of the orphanage built by Fa-ther Price in 1898. (Father Price was North Carolina’s first native-born Catholic diocesan priest.) The new Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral is being built on the same Nazareth property that was once home to the orphanage and chapel. The shared name and location carry special meaning for the diocese. At about 40 inches tall, the cross is a simple wooden piece. It’s worn out by decades of exposure to elements such as sun and rain. Jim

Shaughnessy, council treasurer, explained that it was the late John Norkus who rescued the cross from the rubble after the chapel was demolished in the 1960s. “He brought the cross here,” Shaughnessy said. “Now, with the cathe-dral being built and under the same name, we thought it was time to give it to the bishop.” Grand Knight Leo Minervini handed the cross to Bishop Burbidge at the end of the dinner, which was for those attending the Vocation Invi-tational.
