Story of Migration (movement of people)

• My name is Jamal. And I am going to tell you a story about where I came up and how it affected my own life path. Story involves my family, especially my pops and how I got to be where I am at now.

This was my grand daddies' block. He was born way back in the day, 1901 or 1902. His

neighborhood was on the Eastside.

Here is a picture of my grand-daddy with one of his nieces. I never met the dude, but everyone tells me my grand-daddy would take his shirt off his back for you. Just always there, always helping.

Yo, right below you, that’s my grand-daddy in the middle. You see, when he was 16 he dropped out

of high school and started working at Sparrows Point Shipyard.

He started working in the 1920s, and back then, manufacturing jobs were everywhere. Check it though, right; my grand-daddy, he ain’t have no high school degree but could get a decent paying job

Shoot, grand daddy was bringing home that money. I mean, yeah we wasn’t living large, but bills were being paid and no one was stressing

financially.

That’s my grand-daddy in the suit right there. Nah, psyche, I’m just playing, he the one on the right. You see, people was working then, there was manufacturing everywhere. Steel. Iron. Glass. Clothing. The Port. By the 1940s, Baltimore’s population was booming son.

• While my grand-daddy was working at the ship yard, my pops was grinding at school. But to be honest with you, pops was never no academic. I mean, pops was smart but he knew his destiny lay in the shipyard with my grand-daddy.

By the time Pops made it to high school, my grand-daddy was getting sick. Too many years on the job wore down his bones, I mean, it ain’t as if grand-daddy was superman. Dude just got old, and pops had to take the reigns for the fam. So, pops dropped out, and got hired at the shipping yard.

Pops worked like a dog in the heat. Up at dawn, sometimes working past the sun. He took my moms out on Penn Ave back when they had it straight bumping. The Harlem Renaissance music scene had touched Baltimore, and the Black nightlife was electric. Man, even in his worst days, pops still cracked a smile when Penn Ave was mentioned.

But then the 1970s rolled around, and things changed for pops…

The Shipyard closed, and pops was laid off. And to make matters worse, grand-daddy died from cancer. Hard times were on the

horizon.

Check out the Shipyard below, just bare-boned man. I mean, thousands of workers,

ya feel me, lost it all just like that.

But yo, that wasn’t the whole story. Industry was collapsing all over Baltimore. Shoot, it was like a

disease all through the rust belt. And people suffered, people was lost in the struggle.

Dang, 1970s was no time to raise a family in Baltimore. Things were hard, factories was closing

and the city’s population was decreasing

• Now that this region (rust belt) industry is gone, predict what will happen to the state’s representation in Congress (political power)?

And by 1985, I was blessed into this world. But the fam was struggling, and Baltimore

was changing.

Remember my grand-daddy’s block. Well, things started changing after the factories closed down. And lots of people left Baltimore to go to other regions.

My old block went boarded up, a place where the fiends injected that poison.

Man, the neighborhoods was declining. Crime was on the rise. Drug markets were opening up. Jobs

were lost. And the city was hurting for tax revenue.

And pops was stressing. With the population so low, Baltimore City wasn’t providing the same kind of public services. Schools needed more funding. The 5-0s were getting crazier. And pops made a

decision. He started hustling

But pops wasn’t built for the streets. All he wanted to do was provide. A corner sweep had him charged with possession with intent to sell. The judge came down hard on pops, gave him 5 in the yard.

• And me, well, I was doing my thing at Lake Clifton. The school had its problems, ya feel me, but I kept my mind focused even with pop’s locked up. I mean, I had to do right by my moms who was now playing both parental roles.

But like I said man, people was doing what they could to make that money. And who was looking out for us? The city was losing people, and it was losing political power. And some of my homies chose stay on them corners.

And some of my homeboys ended up here. Demon caught a stray to the chest. Jabrail’s fate was the wrong end of a 9 millimeter. Some dudes caught him the alley and it was over. They were my boys for life, still are, ya feel me.

But life has to go on, and so did my own story. I graduated from Lake with A’s and B’s. Alright, some C’s as well. I decided to go to college. And I knew, that for

now, I had to see somewhere else. I love my block, and I love my city. But the time had come to see a new region

• That’s me, studying international politics. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I have my fun but these days I am learning a lot of new things. And word to pops, cause he gets out next month. Always much respect to moms cause she’s my heart.

• Pops and I reunited a while back. For a long time I was angry at pops, couldn’t understand why he made that move to the streets when he had a son. But, I’ve grown wiser, and I now know that pops felt he was forced to do something. Right or wrong, pops got caught up in the struggle of the city.
