モントリオールの姉妹都市である広島市では、7月にモントリオール関連のイベントが多数開催されます。広島市民が、モントリオール市、ケベック州、カナダに少しでも多くの感心を持つ事を願って開催されており、広島市や地元企業のみならず、モントリオール市やカナダ大使館、カナダ観光局も協力しています。

今年最大のイベントは、７月25日（日）に開催される「モントリオールの日」交流会。姉妹都市セレモニー、コンサート、写真展や物産展を通して、広島市民がモントリオールの雰囲気を味わうことが出来ます。メープルコーヒーやケベック名物プーチンの試食試飲もできるとあって、交流会は毎年大人気。その他にも、図書館でケベック映画祭が開かれるなどのイベントも。そして、「ココ・モントリオール７月号広島特別版」が、モントリオールの情報をたくさん詰め込んで、広島市で配布されることが決定しました。広島とモントリオールの文化交流に参加できることを、ココモンスタッフ一同光栄に思っています。

Hiroshima, a sister city to Montreal, holds a wide range of events related to Montreal in July. In the hopes that Hiroshima citizens will take more in-terest in Montreal, Quebec, and Can-ada, these events are supported not only by the city of Hiroshima, but also by the city of Montreal, the Canadian Embassy and Tourism Canada, and lo-cal businesses.

This year’s biggest event is the “Mon-treal Day” event on July 25th where Hiroshima citizens can enjoy the atmosphere of Montreal through ceremonies, concerts, photo exhibi-tions, and local products from Que-bec. Patrons can try maple coffee and poutine, Quebec’s famous dish, at a sample corner, which is a very popu-lar event every year. There is also a Quebec film festival takes place at the local library. Even more, this year, a special July edition of Coco Montreal for Hiroshima will be distributed. This edition will have plenty of informa-tion about Montreal. All staff at Coco Montreal are very happy and hon-oured that we are able to take part in cultural exchange.

En juillet la ville d’Hiroshima, qui est une ville soeur de Montréal, organise une sé-rie d’événements reliés à Montréal. Dans l’espoir d’augmenter l’intérêt des citoyens d’Hiroshima en ce qui a trait à la ville de Montréal, le Québec, et le Canada, ces évé-nements sont organisés non seulement par la ville d’Hiroshima mais aussi par la ville de Montréal ainsi que l’Ambassade du Canada, Tourisme Canada, et les com-merces locaux.

C’est donc le 25 juillet que se tient le plus grand événement de l’année, “Journée de Montréal”, événement où les citoyens d’Hiroshima peuvent se familiariser avec Montréal au travers de cérémonies, de concerts de musique, de vernissages pho-tographiques, et de produits locaux du Québec. Cet événement est plus popu-laire d’une année à l’autre car les citoyens peuvent goûter du café au sirop d’érable ou la fameuse poutine québécoise. Il y a aussi un festival de films québécois qui se donne dans les librairies locales. Ajoutez à cela que cette année il y aura aussi une distribution de “Coco Montréal-Édition Spéciale à Hiroshima”. Cette édition offrira beaucoup d’informations sur Montréal. Les membres de Coco Montréal sont très contents et honorés de participer à cet échange culturel.

静寂の持つある種の緊張感が支配する中、研ぎ澄まされた感性の発露がほとばしる。観客席で見ているはずの自分がいつの間にか神の目線となり、舞台上にセットされた三方の壁の上部から、まるで箱の底でもがき苦しみながら浄化しようとしている踊り手を覗いている錯覚に見舞われ、軽い眩暈を覚えた。崇高で超越的な集中力がみなぎる究極のソロ舞台。ダンサー、舞踏家、振付家、演出家、俳優、映画監督、執筆活動、大学教授とさまざまな肩書きと経歴を持ち、自らの感性を無限に表現し続けていくアーティスト、勅使川原三郎さん。2回の公演ともに鳴り止まないスタンディングオベーションで終え、パリへ移動する直前の時間を割いてインタビューに答えてくれた。

ー「ミロク」は何からインスピレーションを受けたのか？

詩人であり思想家でもある稲垣足穂の自伝的詩小説「弥勒」からの発想です。私は長年、足穂から大きな影響を受けてきました。また、京都、広隆寺にある弥勒菩薩像を訪れたときに受けた感動も理由になっています。

ーどんな感情を持って踊っているのか？

人間は誰でも最後に死を迎えます。それに対して、恐れたり不安を抱いたりするのですが、見方を変えれば、その死によって、来るべき未来がより豊かになる、限られた時間が魂の浄化により永遠となる。死があるからこそ、誕生から死、過去から未来が存在するんですね。明確で強い意志があれば、舞台という限られた空間だけではなく、思いは舞台から観客に向かって飛び出していくと思います。

ー「ミロク」が初演されたのが2007年12月8日。そのときと同じモチベーションを持続することはできるのか？

もちろん、私の身体も老いていくわけですし、周りの環境も変わっていくでしょう。しかし、これを衰退と取るのか、進化、または成長と取るかによって違ってきます。私は、むしろ、時が経つにつれて、余分なものが削ぎ落とされて求めているものが明確になり、より伝えやすくなっていくと思っています。ある人は自分の中に引き出しを持っていて、そこに入っているものを使って表現していくと思うでしょうが、この引き出しは常に新しいものが詰まっていくのです。いままで見たことがない何かに出会ったり、聴いたり見たりするもの、どんなに微細であっても感じたものは自分の身体の中心に蓄積されていきます。小説や映画などは世に出た時点で完成となりますが、ダンスは、一生、成長し続けていくものだと思っています。

ーたくさんのダンサーが勅使川原さんのようになりたいと努力を重ねている。その夢を叶えるための秘訣は？

自分がやりたいこと、心地よいことを突きつめることが、夢、目標を達成するのには大切なことだけど、それと同時に、自分に問い続けることを忘れてはならないと思います。自分は本当にこれが好きなのか？このやり方でやっていていいのか？それを繰り返すことによって本質が見えてくる。また、自分らしさ、独自性を追求するのには、どんなことをしても既に存在しているものが多く、真似になってしまうと思いがちだが、一度、自分の中に取り入れて消化し、それが元になって発信されたものは自分のオリジナリティとなるんですね。無理に誰もやっていないものを捜し求めるのでなく、自分の中にいろ

いろな要素を取り入れて、その感じた喜びや痛みは自分だけの感覚なんです。それを身体の中心に据えて感情を発していく。そのためには、日々の暮らしの中で、”なんだろうな？”と疑問を持って見る目を養っていくことは必要でしょう。

ーこれからの夢や目標は？

私の場合は、大きな夢や目標に向かって進むよりも、目の前にあるものをひとつひとつ形にしていくことに関心があります。今、関心があることと言えば、若手、特に中学生や高校生ぐらいの年代の子供たちの育成です。彼らにはもっといろんな可能性があっていいはずです。何も大学に進学して、会社勤めをするのがいいわけじゃない。それに、社会とはいろんな世代で構成されていて、大人だけのものではないんですね。私たちが得たものを、次の世代に伝承、継承して新たな可能性を切り開いていくことは大切だと思います。

ある意味、達観した清さと芯の強さを感じさせる勅使川原さんの言葉に、人間の持つ無限大の可能性を感じた。自分を外側に表現していくことは、同じく、自分の内側を突き詰めていくこと。それは誰しもが成し得られることではない。真の表現者の姿をそこに感じた。

ー Quelle était votre inspiration pour Miroku?

J’ai créé ce spectacle en me basant sur le livre autobiographique “Miroku” écrit par Taruho Ina-gaki, qui était un poète et un grand penseur. Son travail m’influence depuis longtemps. Une autre source d’inspiration est l’expérience émouvante d’observer la statue du Buddah Miroke au temple Kuryuji situé à Kyoto.

ー Pouvez-vous nous décrire ce à quoi vous pens-er lorsque vous danser?

Nous devons tous mourir, et cette pensée effraie et cause de l’anxiété chez la plupart des gens. Cepen-dant, lorsque vous y réfléchissez avec une perspec-tive différente, il est possible, puisque nous som-mes conscients de cette fin; la mort, de rendre nos vies plus significatives. Nous pouvons transformer ce temps limité en une éternité grâce à l’élévation de notre âme. Puisque la mort existe, nous avons la naissance et la mort, le passé et le futur. Je crois que si je suis convaincu de mes idées, mes pensées et que ma volonté est forte, je peux matérialiser ces pensée non seulement dans l’espace limité de la scène, mais aussi dans l’auditoire.

ー Miroku fut présenté la première fois le 8 décembre 2007. Croyez-vous être en mesure de garder la même motivation que lors de cette pre-mière?

Je vieillis, et, certainement, notre environnement change. Je crois que le fait de considérer ces phé-nomènes comme du dépérissement ou de la crois-sance, même de l’évolution, fera la différence. En vieillissant, nous somme en mesure d’éliminer ce qui est superflu et de devenir plus certain de ce que nous désirons, et de l’exprimer.Les gens disent souvent que nous gardons nos idées dans une armoire à tiroirs dans notre tête d’où nous retirons les idées lorsque nous nous exprimons. Ces tiroirs sont constamment en train d’emmagasiner de nouvelles informations. Tout ce que vous ressentez est ainsi emmagasiné en vous. Par exemple, lorsque vous désirez quelque chose que vous avez vu auparavant, ou quand vous en-tendez ou voyez quelque chose, ces impressions sont emmagasinées en vous, même si elles sont très subtiles.Les livres et les films sont complets lorsqu’ils sont publiés; par contre, je crois que la danse continue à évoluer tout au long de la vie du danseur.

ー Plusieurs danseurs travaillent fort pour deve-nir comme vous. Selon vous, quel pourrait être la clé de leur réussite?

Pour réaliser vos rêves, je crois qu’il est très impor-tant de continuer à faire ce qui vous tient à coeur et ce qui fait que vous vous sentez bien ; mais il est important de continuer à se demander “Est-ce que j’aime vraiment ce que je fais?“ et “Suis-je dans la bonne direction?”. En faisant cela, on commence à percevoir l’essence de nous-mêmes. De plus, nous avons tendance à croire qu’il est difficile de créer quelque chose par soi-même en faisant abstrac-tion de l’influence des autres. Peu importe ce que vous faites, vous allez toujours trouver quelqu’un qui a déjà fait une chose comparable et similaire. J’aimerais insister sur le fait que lorsque vous ap-prenez et comprenez quelque chose, celle-ci vous appartient. Ce que vous créer en utilisant ce que vous avez appris devient votre création originale. L’originalité n’est pas atteignable en cherchant une chose que personne n’a jamais faite. Apprenez et imprégner vos de plusieurs choses. La joie et la peine que ces expériences vous feront ressentir vous appartiendrons. Souvenez-vous comment vous vous sentiez et laissez ces émotions grandir en vous. Pour ce faire, vous devez avoir un regard intéressé et interrogatif sur les choses.

ー Avez-vous des rêves et des objectifs dont vous voulez nous faire part?

Je ne suis pas le genre de personne qui travaille vers un objectif ou un rêve en particulier. Je suis plus intéressé à réaliser les idées que j’ai en ce mo-ment.Ce qui m’intéresse en ce moment est l’éducation des enfants, en particulier les adolescents. Ceux-ci devraient avoir l’opportunité d’avoir plus de choix. Ce n’est pas nécessairement le meilleur choix de vie que d’aller à l’université et de travailler dans une compagnie. Par ailleurs, la société est faite de plusieurs générations, et elle n’appartient pas seulement aux adultes. Ce que nous avons appris et gagné devrait constituer un héritage pour les jeunes générations, et ce afin qu’ils créent un futur nouveau.

Par ces paroles, j’ai perçu l’esprit pur deM.Teshigawara,détachédumondeordinairedansunsens,saforce,etlesinfiniespossibilitésdeshu-mains.“S’exprimer est se chercher soi-même”. Ce n’estpasquelquechoseque tout lemondepeut faire.Cetteapprochemefitressentirl’espritduvéritableartiste.

ー What was the inspiration for Miroku?

I created this performance based on the auto-biographical poem-novel Miroku by Taruho In-agaki, who was a poet as well as a great thinker. I have been deeply influenced by his work for a very long time. The other inspiration was the moving experience of seeing the Miroku Bud-dha statue at Koryuji Temple in Kyoto.

ー Tell us what is in your mind while you are dancing.

We all have to die in the end, and it causes fear and anxiety in most of us. But, if you look at it a little differently, you could say that because we know that there is death, an end, we can make the rest of our lives more fulfilling. We can turn that limited time of ours into eternity by the catharsis of our soul. Because there is death, we have birth and death, past and future. I be-lieve that if I am sure of my thoughts and have a strong will, I could materialize them not only in the limited space on the stage, but also in my audience.

ー Miroku was first performed on December 8th, 2007. Do you think you can keep the same level of motivation as the first time?

I will be getting old, of course, and our sur-roundings will change, too. I think it makes a lot of difference whether I take it as decay, or evolution and even growth. Through ageing, we can eliminate anything superfluous and can be surer of what we really desire, and be able to express it. People often say that we keep ideas and thoughts in the chest of drawers in our head, and take them out as we need to express ourselves. Those drawers are constantly stor-ing new information. Anything that you feel is stored in you. For example, what you feel when you see something you have not seen before, or what you hear or see, even if it’s very subtle. Novels and films complete when they come out, but I think that dance is something that keeps evolving throughout the dancer’s life.

ー Many dancers are working hard to be like you. What do you think is the key to make their dreams come true?

To realize your dream, I think it’s very import-ant to keep doing what you want to do and what makes you feel good, but you should not forget to keep asking yourself, “do I really like what I’m doing?” “am I going in the right direc-tion?” By doing this, we start seeing the core of ourselves. Also, we tend to think that it’s very hard to create something of our own without imitating others. Whatever you do, you will always find that somebody else has done it al-ready. I would like you to know that once you learn and understand something, it becomes your asset. What you create using this is your own creation. Originality is not something you get by looking for what people have not done before. Learn and take in many things. The joy or pain they make you feel is of your own. Re-member how you feel and let it grow in you. To do this, you need to look at things with interest and question.

ー Do you have any dream or goal?

I’m not a type of person who works towards a dream or goal. I’m more interested in realizing ideas I have now.What I’m interested in now is the education of children, particularly teenagers. They should be allowed to have more choices. It’s not necessar-ily the best way of life to go to a university and get a job in a company. Besides, society is made up of many different generations, and it does not just belong to grown-ups. What we have gained should be passed down to younger generations to create a new future.

夏のお祭りシーズン到来。モントリオールでも各種フェスティバルが続々開催されていきます。ジャズも花火もとっても素敵、でもやっぱりにこは日本人、浴衣を着て夜道を歩いた、日本のお祭りが懐かしくもなります。ほらほら、耳の奥に聞こえてきた、ドドンドンドン、和太鼓の音…。ん？どうも音が近い。どうやらこれは、思い出の中の音ではなくて、ここモントリオールから、お腹にズシンズシンと響いてくる音…。皆さんもうおわかりですね。そうです、これこそモントリオールの和太鼓グループ「あらし太鼓」の演奏の始まりなのです…。

今月のモントリオールのナイスガイは、この「あらし太鼓」の代表を務めていらっしゃる、大脇幹生さんです。１９８３年に、日系のコミュニティー活動の一環として誕生した「あらし太鼓」。幹生さんは、２０代前半から７０歳までと幅広いパフォーマンスメンバーをまとめるばかりか、成人クラス２つと子供クラス１つの和太鼓教室の指導も手掛けています。「教室」と書きましたが、幹生さん曰く、教室とは即ち「道場」。和太鼓の練習・実技を通じて、どう生きるかを見つける、人間形成の場なのだそうです。「あらし太鼓」を支える３つのポリシー、すなわち、「respect」「appreciation」「consid-eration」を学ぶ場として、例えば子供向けクラスでは、全員一列に並んで一斉に雑巾がけをすることもあるそうです。太鼓を叩く以前の、場を清める行為、そこへの感謝の気持ち、師への感謝と尊敬の気持ち、共に学ぶ者への思いやりなどを学ぶ一つの有効な手段、と幹生さんは言います。練習前後のお辞儀・挨拶を徹底するのも、こうした指導の一環。日本文化を異国の人に紹介するばかりでなく、外国にいる日本人に、改めて日本文化を再発見してもらうよい機会になっているに違いありません。老若男女の師匠、幹生さんは、実は本職は料理人。フリーランサーとして、企業に出張し日本料理のワークショップを開くかたわら、

「ケベック日系料理人協会」の主要メンバーとして、本物の日本料理をモントリオール、ケベックに伝えていく使命に奔走しています。

モントリオールに吹き荒れる「あらし」が、どこか優しくて茶目っ気たっぷりで、でも日本やケベックや人間や森羅万象への愛に溢れていること、風神雷神の幹生さんを少しでも知ると納得がいきます。幹生さんが熱く思いを語る時、愛の「あらし」が吹き荒れます。７月、８月も、そんな「あらし」をあちこちで聴くことができます。さあ皆さんも入道雲に乗って、あらしの真ん中へ出かけましょう！

The summer festival season has arrived. Various festivals will be held one after another in Montreal as well. Jazz and fireworks are fantastic, how-ever as Niko is Japanese; she naturally misses Japanese festivals where she used to go at night wearing Yukata or informal cotton kimono for the summer. Listen, Dong Dong Dong – the sounds of Japanese drams, reache the inner part of my ears. Hum? It sounds very close by. How-ever, something tells me that those sounds are not coming from my memories. They are the actual sounds reaching my abdomen heavily in Montreal... I will assume you understand what I am talking about. Yes, this is the beginning part of a performance of a Japanese dram group in Montreal – Arashi Taiko or Stormy Dram.

This month’s Nice Guys in Montreal is Mr. Mikio Owaki who represenrs “Arashi Taiko.” In 1983, “Arashi Taiko” was born as one of the Japanese community’s activities. Mikio-san not only organizes a wide range of performance members from their early 20s up to 70 years old, but also assists with teaching one adult and two children’s classes of Wadaiko or Japanese dram. I wrote “class,” but it is “dojo” according to Mikio-san. It is the place to form human beings, where you will find how to live through practice and training of Wadaiko. There are three policies – to learn respect, appreciation and consideration at dojo. Under those poli-cies, children sometimes line up for wiping the floor with clothes all to-gether. They are effective tools to learn about purifying the place, the feeling of appreciation, the feeling of gratitude and respect towards the teacher, the compassion towards co-students, etc. before starting Taiko, so Mikio-san says. Because of the teachings, bowings and greetings be-fore and after the training are done thoroughly, it might be a good op-portunity not only for foreigners being introduced to Japanese culture, but also for Japanese who live abroad to re-discover Japanese culture. Mikio-san’s profession - the master of men and women of all ages, is ac-tually a chef. As a freelancer, he visits companies to provide workshops on Japanese cuisine. On the other hand, as a key member of “Quebec Japanese Chef Association,” he makes efforts to execute his mission – to promote real Japanese cuisine in Montreal and Quebec.

“Arashi” ranging in Montreal is somehow gentle, but playful. It has full of love towards Japan, Quebec, human beings and all nature. You will understand those, if you know Mikio-san - the God of Wind and the God of Thunder. La saison des festivals est arrivée! De nombreux festivals se succèdent dans les rues de Montréal. Le Festival de jazz ou celui des feux d’artifice sont fantastiques, mais la Japonaise en moi s’ennuie des festivals japonais où j’avais l’habitude de passer mes soirées d’été, vêtue d’un yukata (un kimono informel fait de coton). C’est étrange, le son des tambours japonais frappe soudainement mes tympans. Hum, on dirait que le son s’amplifie... Cependant, quelque chose me dit que ce bruit n’est pas seulement le fruit de mon imagination... Le son de ces tambours qui résonnent dans mon sternum est bel et bien réel... J’imagine que vous commencez à comprendre de quoi je vais vous parler cette fois. En effet, c’est bien le début du spectacle du groupe de tam-bours japonais de Montréal Arashi Taïko (ou les tambours de la tempête).

Ce mois-ci, la personne dont je vais vous parler est Mr Mikio Owaki, qui représente le groupe Arashi Taïko. Ce groupe est né en 1983 grâce à une activité organisée par la communauté japonaise. Mikio-san ne s’occupe pas seulement des membres du groupe, qui ont tous entre 20 ans et 70 ans, mais assiste également à l’enseignement d’une classe pour adultes et de deux classes pour enfants de wadaïko, ou tambour ja-ponais. J’ai écrit « classe », mais pour Mikio-san, il s’agit plutôt d’un dojo, puisque c’est un endroit où l’on forme des êtres humains, où l’on apprend à vivre grâce à l’appren-tissage et la pratique des wadaïko. Il existe trois règlements au dojo qui visent à ensei-gner le respect, le sens de l’appréciation et de la considération. Selon ces règlements, les jeunes doivent par exemple tous ensemble participer à la corvée de polissage du sol du dojo. Ce sont des outils efficaces afin d’apprendre à purifier l’environnement de pratique, à développer le sens de l’appréciation, de la gratitude et du respect en-vers l’enseignant, et de la compassion envers les autres élèves, explique Mikio-san. Le prosternement et les salutations qui précèdent et suivent l’enseignement peuvent aussi être une bonne occasion pour les non-Japonais de découvrir notre culture et pour les Japonais qui vivent à l’étranger de la redécouvrir.

Mikio-san, le maître de plusieurs personnes, hommes et femmes, est chef cuisinier. Il agit comme conseiller et visite différentes entreprises afin d’offrir des ateliers sur la cuisine japonaise. Il est également un membre respecté de l’association québécoise des chefs japonais, où sa mission principale est de faire la promotion de l’authentique cuisine japonaise à Montréal et à travers la province.

Le groupe Arashi Taïko est à l’image des tempêtes du Québec; douces, mais fougueu-ses. Le groupe est également motivé par son amour du Japon et du Québec, mais également des êtres vivants et de la nature qu’ils habitent. Vous comprendriez tout cela si vous connaissiez Mikio-san, le dieu du vent et du tonnerre! Lorsque Mikio-san parle de sa passion, Arashi, il déclenche une tempête d’émotions.Vous pourrez entendre une telle arashi à différents endroits au cours des mois de juillet et d’août. ヘアメークの仕事を始めてから、もうかれこれ12年になります。映画関係の仕事やテレビ、コマーシャル、舞台など、たくさんのお仕事をさせていただきました。そんな中で最も充実感があり、幸せを感じるお仕事と言えば結婚式のお仕事です。

モントリオールの素晴らしいところと言えば数多いカルチャーです。ですから様々な結婚式に参加させていただいています。イタリアンカソリック、チャイニーズカソリック、ジュイッシュにヒンドゥーなどと、たくさんの宗教の様々な儀式の中で花嫁さんのヘアメークをさせていただいています。飾りつけ、着る服装やドレス、使う色、お出しする食べ物など、宗教によってそれぞれの伝統となるやり方がすごく違っていて、その中で仕事が出来ることをとてもラッキーに思っています。これが結構楽しいんです。

ヘアメークをする時間帯はほとんど朝が早いです。眠気と緊張感と、もちろんうれしさも混ざってそわそわする花嫁さんを前にヘアメークをします。この瞬間が大好きです。花嫁さんがケベコワであり日本人であり、イタリア人でありインド人であり、どんな宗教からの方でもこの瞬間にみんな共通する隠し切れない感情が部屋中を漂っているからです。それは幸せ感。みんながニコニコと笑顔に溢れ、時にはうれしさのあまり涙する方がいたり、家族やら親戚の中に漂う幸せ感はただ物ではありません。「結婚」と言う形の中に目には見えなくても、心に沁みる素晴らしいものがあります。私ももらい泣きをする時もあります。みんながみんなすごく幸せなんだなぁと、私も幸せを感じます。それぞれの儀式を行い、こんなにも違った宗教なのに、同じように幸せを感じられることは不思議であり、でも当たり前なんだなと思います。

たくさんの方達にヘアメークをしてきましたが、誰一人からも、どの結婚式からも嫌な経験を受けたことはありません。色んな宗教の中、それぞれ違ったやり方でもたくさんの幸せを味わわせていただいた花嫁さん達とその家族達に感謝しています。日本人である私に対しても差別することなく、優しく受け入れ、仕事をさせてくれます。素敵な経験をありがとうございます。さて、まだまだ結婚シーズンど真ん中です！忙しいですが、充実しています。

Wish you an eternity of happiness

It has already been 12 years since I began my career as a hair and makeup artist. My career has enabled me to work in various fields such as film, television, advertisement, theater and others. Out of all of them, the one field that fills me with the most gratitude and happiness is working for wedding ceremonies.

One thing we can all appreciate about the city of Montreal is the number of different cultures, isn’t it? Therefore, I am able to participate in many different weddings. I’ve had the privilege to do the hair and makeup of many brides from many different religions and traditions, whether it is Italian catholic, Chinese catholic, Jewish or Hindu weddings. From the colors of all the decorations and the outfits they wear, to the food they serve, everything is very different depending on their religion and traditions to which I feel very lucky to be a part of. It is quite exciting and fun.

Usually, applying makeup on the bride happens very early in the morning. I always have in front of me a bride who is going through mixed feelings of sleepiness, nervousness and, of course, a little joy. This is the moment I love and enjoy the most. Whether she is a Quebécois, a Japanese, an Italian or an Indian, and whichever religion she may be from, there is always a common undeniable air of something that fills the room... that of happiness. Everyone is smiling from ear to ear; at times there are even some who shed tears of joy, and the happiness that emits from it all is quite something. In a ceremony such as marriage, we are able to feel and grasp this inevitable feeling, something we can’t see with our eyes but feel with our hearts and it overwhelms us. I too feel

overwhelmed at times and cry in honor of their happiness. It feels strange, and yet still natural to feel this much happiness despite

the differences in all religions.

I have made up many women and have yet not once experienced any bad moments with neither them nor with their wedding. I offer my greatest appreciation to all the brides and their families for sharing such wonderful experiences with all of their traditions and customs. I was

never questioned about being a Japanese person performing my services at their home, but in contrary, I was accepted with

open arms and given a wonderful opportunity to work for their weddings. Thank you for such wonderful experiences. Well, the

wedding season is still at its peak! I am busy, but happily satisfied!

Je vous souhaite une éternité de Bonheur

Il y a déjà 12 ans depuis le jour où j’ai commencé ma carrière en tant qu’artiste de maquillage et de cheveux. Ma carrière m’a permise de travailler dans divers do-maines tels que le film, la télévision, des annonces publicitaires, le théâtre et bien d’autres encore. De tous ces domaines, celui qui me remplit avec le plus de grati-

tude et de bonheur celui du mariage.

Une chose que nous pouvons tous apprécier au sujet de la ville de Montréal est le nombre de différentes cultures présentes, n’est-ce pas? Par conséquent, je peux participer à beaucoup de différents mariages. J’ai eu le privilège de faire le maquillage et les cheveux pour beaucoup de mariées appartenant à beaucoup de différentes religions et avec diverses traditions, quoi qu’ils soient des catho-liques italiens, catholiques chinois, d’un mariage juif ou hindou. Entre les couleurs pour toutes les décorations et les habillements qu’ils portent, à la nourriture qu’ils servent, tout est très différent selon leur religion et les traditions qui y appartiennent au point que je me sens très chanceuse d’y faire partie. C’est tout à fait pas-sionnant et amusant.

Habituellement, c’est très tôt durant le matin qu’on va maquiller et coiffer la mariée au jour du mariage. J’ai toujours devant moi une mariée qui passe par des sentiments mélangés de somnolence,

d’énervement et, naturellement, un peu de joie. C’est ce moment là que j’apprécie le plus. Qu’elle soit québécoise, japonaise, italienne ou une indienne, et de n’importe quelle religion dont elle peut faire partie, il y a toujours un air indéniable et commun qui remplit la salle... celui du bonheur. Chacun sourit d’une l’oreille à l’autre, il y en a même qui versent des larmes de joie et le bonheur qu’ils émettent de tout est tout à fait admirable. Dans une cérémonie telle que le mariage, nous pouvons sentir et saisir ces sentiments inévitables, des choses que nous ne pouvons pas voir avec nos yeux mais que l’on peut sentir avec nos cœurs. Moi aussi, parfois remplie de joie, je pleure en honneur de leur bonheur. Cela semble étrange, mais c’est normal de sentir beaucoup de bonheur en dépit des différences dans toutes les religions.

J’ai maquillé et coiffé beaucoup de femmes mais je n’ai jamais eu aucun mauvais moment avec elles ni avec leur mariages. J’offre ma plus grande appréciation à toutes les mariées et à toutes leur familles pour partager de telles expériences merveilleuses avec toutes leurs traditions et coutumes. Je n’ai jamais été interro-gé au sujet d’être une personne japonaise apportant mes services à leur maison, mais au contraire, j’ai été acceptée avec les bras ouverts et on m’a donné l’occasion merveilleuse de travailler pour leur mariage. Merci pour de telles expériences mer-veilleuses. Et bien, la saison de mariage est toujours en marche! Je suis occupée, mais heureusement satisfaite!

イェーイ！夏がやってきた！皆さん、夏の予定はもうたてましたか？前回は、三社祭から始まるフェスティバル・シーズンについてお話しましたが、浅草の夏はさらに熱いフェスティバルで一杯！予定がたてきれないほど、毎日がお祭り騒ぎなのです。しかしその中で一番のハイライトといえば、毎年7月最終土曜日の夕方から行われる、「隅田川花火大会」。その起源はなんと1733年にまで遡ります！毎年100万人以上の人が訪れ、夜空に咲き誇る美しい花を楽しむのです。普段着物を着ない若者たちも、この日ばかりは浴衣を着て見物に繰り出します。もちろん、花火を口実に、気になる相手をデートに誘うのも一興。夜空に咲くロマンチックな花畑を見たら、二人の距離も一気に近づくかもしれません…が、花火のようにパッと咲いてパッと散らないように、ヤジ馬は祈るばかりです。

カップルばかりでなく、お年寄りから子どもまで、誰もが仲良く空を見上げて楽しむ花火。私もお気に入りの浴衣で、ビール片手に隅田川に繰り出したいところですが、今年は残念ながら見れません…。なぜかというと、今私はバーレスクダンスのイベントに参加しながら、世界ツアーの旅に出ているからです！韓国から始まり、アメリカを経て、この７月号が出版される頃、なんとモントリオール、トロントにいるのです！半年ぶりのモントリオール！もう大興奮です！モントリオールでは、６月に「Dr. Sketchy Montreal」というイベントに参加しました。そして、７月には、トロントで「Toronto Burlesque Festival」に参加予定です。

隅田川の花火大会は見逃してしまいますが、ここ、モントリオールにも花火大会があるじゃないですか！世界の国々の花火が楽しめるモントリオールの花火大会も、とっても楽しみです！モントリオール、トロントで、皆様に街でお会いするのを、心より楽しみにしています。一緒に、カナダの夏を楽しみましょう!!!

The Season of Fireworks

Yay!! It’s summer! Have you made plans for summer vacation? In my last report, I spoke about the fest season in Tokyo, which starts with Sanjamatsuri; but summer time in Asakusa will be even hotter with more festivals to attend! The highlight of all of these festivals is the “Sumidagawa River Fireworks,” conducted on the last Saturday of July every year. It is said to have started back in 1733! The beauty of these “flowers” in the night sky is out of this world, and brings with it more than a million visitors each year. Even the younger crowds, who would normally never wear a kimono, can be seen all dressed up in yukata, a traditional Japanese dress. Of course, part of the excitement is having a date with someone you’ve been crushing on the pretext of watching the fireworks. Any distance between the two of you will be reduced after watching the breathtaking display in the night sky. Onlookers should also make a wish that your love doesn’t simply light up and instantly fade like the fireworks.

Fireworks are not only meant for couples to enjoy though; they appeal to everyone, from the elderly to small children. This year, I would love to wear my favourite yukata and watch the fireworks on the Sumidagawa river while sipping on a beer, but unfortunately I can’t. This is because I’ll be doing a world tour, performing in a burlesque dance show! It will begin in South Korea, then move on to North America, and at the time this issue is published, I’ll be in Montreal and Toronto! I am so excited!! I will have already participated in the Dr. Montreal event in June. And in July, I’ll be in the Toronto Burlesque Festival.

I may have missed the Sumidagawa river fireworks this year, but maybe I’ll find some in Montreal, where I’ve heard there are fireworks from all over the world! I am looking forward to perhaps meeting Coco Montreal readers on the streets of Montreal or Toronto! Let’s enjoy Canadian summer together!

La saison des feux d’artifices

Hourra! L’été est enfin arrivé! Est-ce que tout le monde a terminé de planifier ses activités d’été? La dernière fois je vous ai parlé du commencement des festivals, particulièrement du «Festival Sanja » mais, Asakusa possède une multitude de festivals intenses! Même pour ceux qui n’ont pas de plans fixe, ils peuvent faire la fête à tous les jours. Cependant, le point culminant de tous les festivals, c’est le «Festival de Feux d’Artifices de la Rivière Sumida » qui a lieu à chaque année dans la soirée du dernier samedi du mois de juillet. Le début de ce festival remonte aussi loin qu’à 1733! Chaque année, plus de 1 million de personnes ce rendent au festival pour admirer les magnifiques feux d’artifices étincelants et brillants. Normalement les gens, incluant les jeunes, ne portent pas de Kimono. Par contre ce jour-là, beaucoup en portent et montrent leur Yukata (Kimono d’été). Bien sûr, les feux d’artifices peuvent être un bon prétexte pour inviter une personne envers qui vous avez le béguin sur un rendez-vous. En regardant un ciel étincelant ressemblant à un jardin de fleurs, il n’y a aucun doute que la distance entre vous deux sera immédiatement rapproché, mais... Comme les feux d’artifices, pouf ils scientillent et pouf ils sont éparpillés, c’est un souhait pour les curieux. Par contre, il n’y a pas seulement des couples, il y a aussi des gens de tous les âges qui en profitent pour regarder les feux d’artifices avec ceux qu’ils apprécient. Moi aussi, avec un Yukata que j’aime et une bière dans une main, je veux me laisser aller dans le festival de la Rivière Sumida. Néanmoins, cette année je ne pourrai pas voir les feux d’artifices... La raison ? Je participe à présent à un événement de danse burlesque dans lequel je voyage à travers le monde ! En commençant par la Corée du Sud, en passant par les États-Unis, en même temps que cette édition du mois de juillet je passerai à Montréal et à Toronto! Ça fera 6 mois que je ne suis pas venue à Montréal ! Je suis extrêment excitée ! En juin, à Montréal, j’aurai participé à l’évenement « Dr. Sketchy Montréal » et en juillet, je participerai au « Toronto Burlesque Festival ».

Malgré que je ne pourrai pas voir le festival de feux d’artifices de la rivière Sumida, ici même à Montréal n’y a-t-il pas un festival de feux d’artifices ?! J’ai hâte de voir cette compétition mondial de feux d’atifices qui rassemble des pays de partout! À Montréal comme à Toronto, profitons du bon temps passé ensemble et amusons-nous !!!

今年で20回目を迎えたフリンジフェスティバルに、また、日本から小心ズが戻ってきてくれた。2007年、2008年と参加した際には2人だったが、今回はヤノミさん1人でのパフォーマンス。新作【ミスしゃっくりの幸せな一日】のコスチュームで街を闊歩するヤノミさんに、街ですれ違う人たちも熱烈な視線を投げかけ、ラジオ番組などでも取り上げられるなど話題を振りまいてくれた。

”ミスしゃっくり”とは誰ですか？という質問に、ヤノミさんは「今まで私が生きてきた中で感じたり考えたりしてきたもの、その全てが詰まった人物です」と答えてくれた。

小心ズのパフォーマンスは、無言劇がベースになっている。今回もミスしゃっくりが朝起きて、ラジオ体操するところから始まり、歯磨きしたりトイレに入ったり、何気ない日常の動作がコミカルなシーンとなって観客に笑いを起こしていた。「以前からひとりの女性の一生、生まれてから死ぬまでをやってみたいと思っていました。そんな流れから、今回はひとりの女性の1日をコミカルに表現するパフォーマンスを創作しました。私は人にうけるうけないを考えるよりも、自分が面白いと思ったことを表現していきたいって思っています。言葉もほとんど使わないし、題材も非常にシンプルなものなので、海外公演をしていても、笑いのギャップとかは感じません。その人が内に持っているもので、同じシーンを見て笑う人もいれば悲しくて泣く人もいる。むしろ、人によって感じ方が違っていいと思っています。」

自分にとって、パフォーマンスをし続けていくことは何よりも大切なことだと言うヤノミさん。周囲の視線をを引き付ける風貌とは裏腹に、いつも緊張しながら生きている小心者だとも言う。「小心者というのは、小さなささやかなことにも心を動かす人たちのことだと私は思っています。他の人から見たら取るに足りないこと、どうでもいいようなことにも、繊細に心動かす小心者は、ただの臆病者ではなく、ヴィヴィッドに生きている人たちのことでもあると私は思っています。ひとつの出会いがどんどんふくらんで新しいものを呼んで来るので、目の前の出会いを大切にしたいです。たとえば、こうやって各地のフェスティバルに参加することで知り合った同じパフォーマーたちを、日本に呼んで一緒にツアーをしたりしたことも、最初からそうしようって考えていたことではないんですね。いつも何かに対してわくわくしていたいです」

世界中の舞台を回りながら、観客だけでなく他のアーティストたちとの交流をも着実に育んでいるヤノミさん。彼女の大きな武器は、全てを受け入れる潔さを秘めた笑顔だと思う。その笑顔が、今日もどこかの街で、人々に「Joie de Vivre（生きる喜び）」を提供していることだろう。

This is the 20th year since the Fringe Festival started, and Shoshinz has come back to Montreal from Japan again. In 2007 and 2008, it came with two performers, however this time only Yanomi-san participated. While she was walking around town with her costume from her new production, “Miss Hiccup’s happy day,” people passing her looked at each other with curious and amused glances. She looked so good that a radio program ask her to be on their show. So, she became the talk of the town.

Toward a question “Who is Miss Hiccup?,” Yanomi-san’s answer was “The person who is full of ideas and feelings that I have gained throughout my life.”

The basis of Shoshinz’ performance is a silent play. Miss Hiccup wakes up in the morning and does radio exercises at the beginning of the show, then brushes her teeth, goes to the toilet – unintentional actions on a daily life expressed comical, which makes the audience laugh. “I was wanted to perform the life of a woman, from birth to death. From that thought, I produced a performance expressing a day in the life of a woman but comically. Rather than thinking about what makes people laugh or not, I want to express things that are interesting to me. Since I use little words and the topics are very simple, I don’t feel any gap in the laughter while performing abroad. Depending on what a person has inside, some may laugh and others may cry while watching the same scene. I think it is normal to see a variety of feelings in each person.”

“For me, continuing performance is the most important thing in my life,” Yanomi-san added. She likes attracting people’s glances around her, however, according to her, she is a coward with stress

in her life all the time. “Coward means a person who is touched by even a little thing, I think. A coward moved by a tiny little thing which may be considered of no value to others, is not an ordinary coward, but has a vivid imagination, I think. Every encounter I have expands my mind widely and brings new things to me. So I always take care every time I meet someone and pay attention for something special. For example, I invited the performers whom I have gotten to know from many places participating in different festivals, and organized a tour together in Japan.That was not my original in-tention but I want to be excited by something all the time.”

While going around the world stages, Yanomi-san develops friendships with not only audience but also other fellow artists. In my mind, she uses her smiling face as a weapon that bravely accepts everything; I believe that her smiling face is providing people with a “Joie de Vivre” or “Joy of Life” in some town today as well.

Cela fait 20 ans que le festival FRINGE a fait ses débuts. Shoshinz, un collectif venant du Japon, est de retour à Montréal. En 2007 et 2008, il est venu avec deux artistes; cette fois-ci par contre, seule Yanomi-san a participé. Plusieurs personnes se sont lancées des regards curieux et amusés en la voyant marcher dans les rues de Montréal, vêtue du costume de sa nouvelle production, « Miss Hiccup’s happy day ». Elle avait l’air tellement géniale qu’un pro-gramme à la radio lui a demandé de prendre part à son émission. Ainsi, on ne parlait que d’elle en ville.

À propos de la question, « Qui est Miss Hiccup? », Yanomi-san a répondu : « C’est un personnage qui est remplie d’idées et d’émo-tions acquises au cours de ma vie. »

La performance de Shoshinz est à la base une pièce silencieuse. Miss Hiccup se réveille le matin, puis fait de la radio-gymnastique au début du spectacle. Ensuite, elle se brosse les dents et va aux toilettes – des actions de la vie quotidienne exprimées comique-ment, et qui fait bien rire l’auditoire. « Je voulais jouer la vie d’une femme, de la naissance à la mort. À partir de cette idée, j’ai repré-senté une journée dans la vie d’une femme, mais avec humour. Au lieu de penser à ce qui ferait rire les gens ou non, je voulais exprimer les choses qui me sont intéressantes. Puisque les mots sont rares et que les thèmes sont très simples, je ne sens aucune disparité dans le rire lors de mes représentations à l’étranger. Dé-pendamment de ce que les personnes ressentent au fond d’elles-mêmes, elles peuvent rire ou même pleurer en voyant la même scène. Je pense que c’est normal de voir divers sentiments émaner de chaque personne. »

« Pour moi, continuer de jouer est la chose la plus importante dans ma vie, » ajoute Yanomi-san. Elle aime attirer les regards des gens autour d’elle. Elle se dit, cependant, être une lâche constamment atteinte par le stress. « Lâche veut dire une personne touchée même par une petite chose, je pense. Une lâche touchée par une infime chose qui n’a peut-être aucune valeur pour les autres, n’est pas une lâche ordinaire, mais quelqu’un avec une imagination dé-bordante, je pense. Chaque rencontre que je fais me permet d’élar-gir grandement ma pensée, ce qui m’apporte de nouvelles cho-ses. Alors, je fais toujours attention chaque fois que je rencontre quelqu’un pour retenir quelque chose de spécial. Par exemple, j’ai invité des artistes que j’ai eu la chance de connaître en participant à différents festivals. On a aussi organisé une tournée ensemble au Japon. Ce n’était pas mon intention initiale, mais je veux être enthousiaste tout le temps. »

Tout en parcourant les scènes du monde, Yanomi-san se lie d’ami-tié non seulement avec le public, mais aussi avec des artistes com-me elle. Selon moi, elle utilise son sourire comme une arme qui ac-cepte courageusement tout; je crois que son visage souriant munit les gens d’une joie de vivre dans une autre ville aujourd’hui aussi.

Aoyanagi rencontre son ami Morita, avec qui il a etudié à l’université. À ce moment, il y a un defilé triomphal. En fait, le comportement de Mori-ta est un peu bizzare. Alors tout à coup, ils entendent une détonation : c’est un terrorisme contre le premier ministre. Plus tard, on découvre que quelqu’un fait tomber Aoyanagi en tant que terroriste. Puis, celui-ci demande de l’aide à ses amis qui ont étudié avec lui à l’université....

Sawako travaille à Tokyo. En fait, elle n’aime pas son travail, et cela ne marche pas très bien avec son copain. Un jour, elle reçoit des nouvelles de son père. Il est tombé malade. Elle retourne chez ses parents parce que c’est elle qui doit succéder à l’usine de son père. Malheusement, il a presque fait banqueroute. De plus, les employés ne sont pas gentils avec elle. Enfin, elle décide de relever les finances de l’usine.

仕事も恋愛もうまくいかず、妥協の日々を送っているＯＬ佐和子。ある日、父が末期がんで倒れたという知らせが届く。佐和子は田舎に戻り、実家のしじみ工場を継ぐことに。しかし工場は倒産寸前。パートのおばちゃんにも相手にされない。そんな追い込まれた中で佐和子は工場を立て直す決意をする。

À Sanage-cho, il y a une opposition entre les habitants et le groupe du maire. D’une part, les habitants veulent retaper le château pour inviter les tourtistes. D’autre part, le groupe du maire veut construire une usine pour inviter les travailleurs. Tout à coup, trois fantômes de samurai se montrent pour reconstruire le château. Il essaient de collaborer avec les habitants. Arriveront-ils à leur fin?!

During the Edo period, Gin-toki, a utility man, agreed to

a request to look for a stolen sword. At the same time, another utility man was looking for Katsura, who had disappeared. It was thought that there was a relationship between Katsura and Tsujigiri, and this made the people very afraid. Then Gintoki learned that Tsujigiri was like a living sword, and he also starts to look for Katsura.

Pendant la période Edo, Gintoki, homme à tout faire, reçoit une de-mande de chercher un sabre qui a été volé. En même temps, les autres employés cherchent Katsura qui a fait une fugue. Ils imaginent qu’il y a une relation entre Katsura et Tsujigiri, un être qui fait peur au gens. C’est alors que Gintoki apprend que Tsujigiri est un sabre animé, ‘’vi-vant’’. Il commence aussi à chercher Katsura.

舞台は江戸時代。万事屋を営む銀時の元に、盗まれた名刀「紅桜」を探しすという依頼がはいる。一方、他の従業員は失踪した桂を捜索していた。従業員は桂の失踪と世間を騒がしている辻斬りが関係あると睨む。同時に、辻斬りがまるで生き物のようにうごめく妖刀を手にしたという情報を得、彼も桂を探し始める。

Yamaguchi, 1960. Shinko est en troisième année à l’école primaire. Elle joue souvent à des jeux traditionnels. Son père les lui a enseignés. En-suite, Kiiko arrive de Tokyo. Elle n’aime pas sa nouvelle vie, mais elle gagne des amis grâce à Shinko. Elle est une personne pleine de curi-osité. Mais tout à coup, un accident se produit....

舞台は昭和30年代の山口県。小学3年生の新子は、お爺ちゃんから聞かされた千年前のこの町やそこに住む人々を想い、楽しく遊んでいた。そこに東京からの貴伊子が転校してくる。田舎の生活に慣れない貴伊子だが、好奇心旺盛な新子に連れられ友達を増やしていく。しかしそんな友情を揺るがす大事件

が起こる・・・。

En 1975, la chanson ‘’Fish Story’’ est sortie par “Gekirin”, un groupe punk. En 1982, un étudiant timide lui prédit qu’il va aider au monde un jour. En 2009, un terroriste engage un cuisinier qui voulait devenir un hero, et une lycéenne. En 2012, “Fish Story” aide le monde pendant la plus grande crise de l’histoire!

Il commence à faire chaud pour de bon ces dernier temps. Cette saison, quand il fait beau, j’aime surtout le moment béatitude où je prends le diner ou un café en étant baigné de lumière sur une terrasse. Coco Montréal recommande pour ce mois-ci, Rockaberry sur la rue St. Denis qui est très connu pour ses tartes. D’abord, on ne peut pas passer sans regarder la vitrine où il y a plein de gâteaux multicolores. On peut choisir en les regardant; c’est un avantage. Le gâteau touffu est comme le Mont-Royal. Même si ce n’est qu’un seul morceau, il est très volumineux. C’est mieux de le partager avec des amis ou bien quand on a très faim.

Le gâteau plus populaire est une tarte au fromage avec de la crème de fromage épaisse et abondante. En plus, avec ses fraises, cela fait saliver. Le Banana Split au Chocolat est pour les plus grands amateurs de friandises. On peut goûter l’harmonie du chocolat amer et de la crème sucrée. L’ambiance du soir est différente de la

However, if you visit this Mexican restaurant just once, you will quickly discover why it’s worth making the commute. The friendly owners, Berenice Mora and Adrian Becerril, have run Amaranto for the past three years. After buying the space on a whim, Berenice and Adrian have created a menu and space that reflects their background and culture. They’ve tried and succeeded to create a relaxing space where people can experience classic specialties from Mexico City and the re-gion surrounding it.

Caché au coin de Monkland et de l’avenue Hampton, Ama-ranto sort des chemins battus. Cependant, si vous visitez ce restaurant mexicain, même qu’une seule fois, vous dé-couvrirez rapidement pourquoi il en vaut le détour. Les propriétaires, Berenice Mora et Adrian Becerril, dirigent l’Amaranto depuis les trois dernières années. For mains, we sampled several items off the menu including flau-tas – fried chicken tacos, chorizo tacos, and beef tacos. Each was delicious and served with sides of rice and beans, fresh tomato and tomatillo salsas and taco chips. Of the specials of the week, we tried tinga de pollo, a warm, mildly spiced chicken mixture served with corn tortillas, and the infamous mole con pollo – chicken in a dark traditional sauce made with a blend of seeds, peppers and of course dark chocolate. For a thouroughly satisfy-ing and authentic Mexican meal, come visit Amaranto – you will leave feeling like you’ve visited a little piece of Mexico without ever leaving Montreal.

En plat de résistance, nous avons dégusté différents items du menu comprenant les flautas - tacos de poulet frit, tacos de chorizo, et tacos de boeuf. Chacun était délicieux et servi avec du riz et des haricots, sans oublier la salsa de tomates fraîches et de tomatillo accompagnant les tacos. Le spécial de la semaine était la tinga de pollo, un mélange chaud et légèrement épicé de poulet servi avec des tortillas de maïs, et le mole con pollo - poulet servi avec une sauce traditionnelle faite d’un mélange de graines, de poivrons et aussi de chocolat noir. Pour un authentique repas mexicain, es-sayez l’Amaranto - vous repartirez avec le sentiment d’avoir visité un petit morceau du Mexique sans quitter Montréal !

Amaranto has a set menu of antojitos, or typical ‘munchies’ straight from Mexico City. Berenice and Adrian try to use fresh, un-processed foods wherever possible – and the freshness translates into their dishes. To start, there is a soup of the day – on the day we visited, we tried tortilla soup – a homey, comforting blend of broth, avocadoes, chicken, cheese and tortilla strips. For a refresh-ing drink, try the horchata. It’s a rice drink that blends almonds, vanilla and Mexican cinnamon into a delicious chilled treat. We also tried the hibiscus tea, which was tart and unique – perfect re-freshment for a hot summer’s day. We also highly recommend the queso fundido con chorizo, a seductive blend of Oaxacan cheese melted with chorizo and served with warm corn tortillas.

Amaranto offre au menu des antojitos, ou les munchies typiques en provenance de Mexico. Berenice et Adrian utilisent des produits alimentaires frais et non transformés dans la mesure du possible - et la fraîcheur se transmet dans leurs plats. Pour commencer, il y a un potage du jour - le jour de notre visite, nous avons essayé le potage de tortilla - un intime et soulageant mélange de bouillon, d’avocats, de poulet, de fromage et de tortilla. The season of love has finally arrived! Yes, summer’s here, and young Canadian gals are on the lookout for love. There’s something about sunny days, summer spritzers, and sundresses that puts us single la-dies in the mood for all things romantic. Whether discovering a new crush or taking part in a steamy summer fling, love is definitely in the air here in the western hemisphere. But over on the eastern side of the world, what are Japanese singles feeling about summer love? Although I spent four summers in the land of the rising sun, I am still unsure if waking up to sunny days makes Japanese people come down with that summer fever we lovesick Canadians seem to suffer from. Japan may have once been my second home, but there are still many things about the culture and its people that are a mystery to me. What I’ve learned from my experience abroad though is this: Falling in love with a country is no different than falling in love with a person. You are lured in by the mysterious unknown; the courtship is full of awe and wonder; and when you finally fall, you fall for both the good and the bad. It may come as a surprise, but leaving a country behind is no less heart-breaking than leaving a human being. But what happens when the new person you’re dating happens to be from a land far, far away? The mystery and the intrigue are in-tensified, but so is a sense of anxiety and confusion. Those little cul-tural cues you once took for granted are suddenly lost. And when it comes to reading facial expressions and body language, you may as well be illiterate. Not that learning to decipher the subtle-ties of a whole new style of dating is all that bad. Actually, it can be quite fun – as long as you know you’re both on the same page. In the couple months that followed my first date with Hiro, I learned that I was clueless when it came to the do’s and don’ts of Japanese dat-ing culture. Although Hiro had confessed his feelings for me, I still was not confident that when it came trying to read him, that I would get a passing grade. Not well-versed in the games that J-guys play, nor fluent in ‘how to flirt in Japanese,’ I wasn’t sure if ours was a steamy romance that would cool off by summer’s end. But as the temperature grew hotter, so did our feelings for one another. Even with an impending return to Canada (a decision I had made long before that fateful night we first met), neither of us had any intention of turning down the heat. By late spring, we were literally worlds apart and our “dates” consisted of telephone calls and text messages. Sepa-rated by an ocean, our love for one another did not fizzle, but continued to burn strong. By July, Hiro was already planning a trip to Canada so that we too could bask in the season of romance under the hot Toronto sun...(To be continued...)

Amours d’été

La saison de l’amour est arrivée! Eh oui, l’été est arrivé, et les jeunes Canadiennes sont à l’affût de l’amour. Les journées ensoleillées, les gi-cleurs d’arrosage et les robes d’été ont quelque chose qui nous met, jeunes célibataires, dans l’ambiance pour tout ce qui est romantique. Que ce soit un béguin d’été ou une intense aventure amoureuse, il y a certainement de l’amour dans l’air dans ce coin du monde. Mais de l’autre côté de la planète, comment est-ce que les Japonais vivent les romances d’été? Même si j’ai passé quatre étés au pays du soleil levant, je ne suis toujours pas très sûre si se réveiller avec le soleil donne aux Japonais cette fièvre estivale de laquelle on souffre, nous les Canadiens qui languissons d’amour.

Le Japon a déjà été ma seconde maison, mais il y a toujours beaucoup de choses de sa culture et ses gens qui restent énigmatiques pour moi. Voilà ce que j’ai appris de mon expérience à l’étranger : tomber en amour avec un pays c’est comme tomber en amour avec quelqu’un. On est attiré par ce mystérieux inconnu; la séduction se fait dans l’ad-miration et l’émerveillement; et lorsqu’on est finalement conquis, on succombe tant pour le bon que pour le mauvais. Ceci est peut-être sur-prenant, mais laisser un pays c’est tout aussi déchirant que de laisser un être humain.Mais qu’est-ce qui arrive quand la personne avec qui tu sors vient d’un pays très lointain? Le mystère est encore plus grand, mais aussi la confu-sion et le désir. Tout à coup, ces particularités culturelles qu’on prenait pour acquises se perdent. Et quand on veut lire les expressions du vi-sage et le langage corporel, c’est comme si on était analphabète. Mais apprendre à déchiffrer les subtilités d’un nouveau style de romance, ce n’est pas si mal non plus. En effet, ça peut-être très amusant, tant qu’on sait qu’on est sur la même longueur d’onde.

Dans les mois qui ont suivi ma première sortie avec Hiro, je me suis ren-due compte que je n’avais aucune idée par rapport à ce qu’il faut faire et ce qu’il ne faut pas faire à un rendez-vous galant au Japon. Même si Hiro m’avait avoué ses sentiments pour moi, je n’avais toujours pas confiance en mon interprétation. Inexpérimentée dans les jeux des jeu-nes japonais ni dans ‘comment flirter en japonais’, je n’étais pas sûre si notre relation n’était qu’une aventure amoureuse qui finirait avec l’été.Mais au fur et à mesure que la température montait, nos sentiments devenaient de plus en plus puissants. Bien que mon retour au Canada approchait (décision que j’avais prise bien avant cette journée fatidique où on s’est rencontré pour la première fois), aucun de nous deux n’avait l’intention de laisser tomber. Vers la fin du printemps, on était littérale-ment dans des mondes différents, et nos rendez-vous galants consis-taient à des conversations téléphoniques et des messages texte. Séparé par un océan, notre amour n’est pas tombé à l’eau, mais il a continué à brûler. En juillet, Hiro planifiait déjà un voyage au Canada, de cette façon on allait pouvoir se complaire dans la saison de l’amour sous le soleil ardent de Toronto.(À suivre...)

恋の季節が遂にやって来ました！そう、夏が来て、若いカナディアンギャルは恋を見逃さない様、目を凝らしているのです。降り注ぐ太陽、サマースプリッツァー（冷えた白ワインベースのカクテル）とサンドレスって、私達「シングル」を、どうしようもなくロマンスに焦がれるさせてしまうのです。新しい恋に心ときめかせるのもあり。ひと夏の恋に身を焦がすのもあり。こちら西半球には確実に、恋が満ち溢れているのです。でも、はるか東側の国では、夏の恋について、日本人の「シングル」はどう思っているのでしょう？日のいずる国で４度の夏を過ごした私ですが、光り輝く太陽に目を覚まし、夏への熱愛にほだされてしまう恋患いの私達カナダ人の様に、日本人も熱にやられてしまうのかどうか、未だに分からないのです。

一時は日本が私の第二の故郷でもありましたが、今でもその文化や人々の事で不思議に思う事は多々あります。自らの経験を通して学んだのは、国への恋に落ちるのは、人への恋に落ちるのとそう大差はないという事です。未知の不思議に吸い寄せられてしまい— 求愛は驚きと不思議に満ちていて— 遂に陥落すると、良くも悪くも落ちてしまうのです。驚くかもしれませんが、国を去るのは、誰かの元を去るのと同じ位、心が引き裂かれる気持ちになるのです。でも、もし新しい恋人が遠い遠い異国から来ていたとしたら、どうなるでしょう？不思議と好奇心は高まりますが、緊張感と困惑も更なるものです。これまで当然の様に感じ取れていた文化的感覚のヒントは失われてしまいます。そして、表情やボディランゲージを読む事に関してはもはや完全なる無知であると言えましょう。とは言え、新しい付き合い方のとらえ難きを解読しようとするのも案外悪い事でもありません。実際は、結構面白いものです— 二人が同じ土俵にいれば、の事ですが。

ヒロとの初デート後の数カ月、私は日本式付き合い文化の「してイイこと、してはイケないこと」について全くもって無知であると思い知りました。気持ちを打ち明けてくれたヒロでしたが、彼の心を読み取ろうとする事に関しては合格点がとれるか、あまり自信がありませんでした。日本男子の恋愛ゲームの仕掛け方を見破る事もできず、「日本語での誘惑」にも不慣れだった私は、二人の関係が、一気に盛り上がり夏の終わりには燃え尽きてしまう様な物わかりませんでした。しかし、日に日に暑くなるに連れ、お互いへの気持も比例して暑くなって来ました。カナダへ戻る日が刻一刻と迫る中（あの運命の出会いの夜のずっと前に決めていた事でした）、私たちはこの燃え上がる想いを抑えようとは考えもしませんでした。春が終わりを告げる頃、私たちは文字通り国を越えていて、二人の「デート」は電話やテキストメッセージを中心としたものになっていました。海によって隔たれ、私達の互いへの愛情は、揺るがず、強く燃え続け、７月になる頃には、ヒロは既にカナダ旅行を計画していたのです。トロントの熱い太陽の下で、二人で、恋の季節を全身で浴びる為に・・・。

モントリオールの７月といえば、ジャズフェスティバル！ですね。今月は、Jazzにちなんだイディオムをご紹介しましょう。

And all that jazzという表現を聞いたことがありますか？　Jazz といえば、音楽ですね。２０世紀の初期からjazz が楽しまれていますが、もともとのjazz の語源はなんでしょう？アフリカのオリジンだという意見やさまざまな意見がありますが、jazzという言葉には “liveliness(活発なこと), energy（精力、活力）, spirit(精神、気力)” というような意味があります。

1950年代から、このイディオムAnd all that jazzが使われるようになりました。使い方は、And all that stuff, etcetera （それと、その他のもの、などなど）と同じように使えます。日本人には、なかなか使いにくい表現ですが、ネイティブの人が言っているのを耳にしたことがあるでしょうか。例えば、こんな風に使えるんですよ。

“What are you going to do this weekend, Jose?”（今週末、何するの、ホセ君？）

“Well, I have to go grocery shopping, do some laundry, clean my room and all that jazz.”

（う〜ん、買い物、洗濯、掃除とか色し々ないといけないんだよね。）

また、And all that jazzは1975年のミュージカル「シカゴ」で有名になった歌でもあります。是非是非この７月に、And all that jazzのイディオムを使ってみてくださいね！
