PROCLAIM GOD’S WORD

Children’s Sermon

(There is no Sunday School today. All children are to remain in service.)

Anthem - “I Will Praise You, O Lord, with All My Heart” by Lloyd Larson

Old Testament Lesson: Isaiah 49:8-16 (p.665)

Proverbs 8:1-17 Leader: Does not wisdom call, and does not understanding raise her voice? On the heights, beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand. People: Beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries out: To you, O people, I call, and my cry is to all that live. Leader: O simple ones, learn prudence; acquire intelligence, you who lack it. Hear, for I will speak noble things, and from my lips will come what is right; People: for my mouth will utter truth; wickedness is an abomination to my lips. Leader: All the words of my mouth are righteous; there is nothing twisted or crooked in them. People: They are all straight to one who understands and right to those who find knowledge. Leader: Take my instruction instead of silver, and knowledge rather than gold; for wisdom is better than jewels, and all that you may desire cannot compare with her.

Page 6: COLLINGSWOOD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH · 11/5/2012  · our hearts and our entire world. Amen Prelude Welcome and Announcements We welcome you in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ! Please

People: I, wisdom, live with prudence, and I attain knowledge and discretion. Leader: The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate. People: I have good advise and sound wisdom; I have insight, I have strength. Leader: By me kings reign, and rulers decree what is just; by me rulers rule, and nobles, all who govern rightly. People: I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me.

*Hymn - “Make Me a Channel of Your Peace” STF #2171

Gospel Lesson: John 16:1-11 (p. 984)

Sermon: “Living History” The Rev. Dr. Katherine G. Killebrew

RESPONSE TO THE WORD

*Affirmation of Faith

God’s redeeming work in Jesus Christ embraces the whole of humanity’s life; social and cultural, economic and political, scientific and technological, individual and corporate. It includes the natural environment as exploited and despoiled by sin. It is the will of God that his purpose for human life shall be fulfilled under the rule of Christ and all evil be banished from his creation. With an urgency born of this hope, the church applies itself to present tasks and strives for a better world. It does not identify limited progress with the kingdom of God on earth, nor does it despair in the face of disappointment and defeat. In steadfast hope, the church looks beyond all partial achievement to the final triumph of God.

Offering “No one can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one

and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other.” Matthew 6:24

Leader: For our veterans, whom we have sent to far countries on our behalf, and who for us have often endured fear, trauma, and sorrow that no human should have to face, that they may receive healing of their hearts and a welcome home from their towns, their families, and their churches, we pray to the Lord. People: Lord, hear our prayer. Leader: For our men and women serving under orders this day, especially those who may be in situations of danger or captivity, that they may be inspired by the ideal of duty, may conduct themselves with honor, may love country second only to God, and may receive strength equal to every challenge they face, we pray to the Lord. People: Lord, hear our prayer. Leader: For families of men and women now on active duty, families of veterans, civilian families who have suffered in time of war, and especially those families whose tables will always have an empty chair, we pray to the Lord. People: Lord, hear our prayer. Leader: For our leaders, who have the power to promote peace and justice or to extinguish life itself from our planet, that any and all decisions relating to the use of armed forces may be preceded by prayer and accompanied by agony, we pray to the Lord. People: Lord, hear our prayer. Leader: For ourselves, our congregation and pastor and all persons of faith, that recognizing the expression in works which must result from an experience of faith, we may be builders of community as well as seekers of salvation, we may seek outer peace as well as inner harmony, and justice for our world as well as fairness for ourselves, to the end that the dwelling of God may be with us, and we shall be God's people, that the former things pass away and war shall be no more, we pray to the Lord.

Please join us in the lounge for

coffee and fellowship time.

People: Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader: We pray all this in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ

who taught us to pray, All: Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Special honors to our own Fred Heuser who retires from 31 years of service to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church. Fred was the Executive Director of the Presbyterian Historical Society located in Philadelphia. The Historical Society houses the rec-ords of the Presbyterian denomination and many churches around the world. This archival history is critical for the denomination and its churches. Minutes of more than 200 years of national meetings, oral and video re-cordings of historical events and art work depicting our history are housed in the building as well.

We are very proud of Fred and his work in this part of our Church. We are even prouder of being part of a denomination that honors the past lives and actions of faith that challenge us and encourage our faith today. Read more at http://www.pcusa.org/news/2013/5/14/blessed-be-blessing/
