The Carlton Times
A new blood test can help advanced prostate patients choose their therapy.
Choices for advanced prostate patients today include traditional chemotherapy or two new, advanced drugs that have saved lives but are very expensive.
The new blood test by Epic Sciences of San Diego detects a mutation called AR-V7. Ifpatients have this mutation, they don't respond to the new drugs and are better off usingtraditional, and much cheaper, therapies, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The new drugs have extended survival for many patients with advanced prostate cancer, except those patients with the mutation. The drugs are Xtandi from Medivation Inc., andAstellas Pharma, Inc., of Japan, and Zytiga by Johnson & Johnson. Xtandi costs about$9,000 per month, and Zytiga is about $8,000 per month. Traditional chemotherapydrugs, docetaxel, and cabazitaxel are generally a few hundred a month.
About 50,000 U.S. patients have prostate cancer that has advanced despite hormonetherapies. These patients would be candidates for the new drugs, but studies suggest asmany as 20 percent have the AR-V7 mutation. A study by Genomic Health found that noprostate cancer patient with AR-V7 responded to the new drugs.

Resident Profile: Connie Malone
Connie Malone — As a first-generation Italian-American, Hillside residentConnie Malone's family story begins in Italy, where her mother, Rosa Pellegrini, married her father, Mario Savioni, in 1904. Soon after their marriage, in 1907 herfather immigrated to the United States, sponsored by his brother-in-law,Luigi Pellegrini, a fisherman by trade, then a resident of Martinez. Seven yearslater, part of a huge early 20th century migration, Connie's mother, together withher two small children, came through Ellis Island on their way to Martinez to join her husband Mario. Once in Martinez, the family established their home, and Connie's father worked for MountainCopper, a local business. Also a fisherman, he plied his trade up and down the coast, from Montereyto Alaska. Happily, the family grew to include four more children, of which Connie is the secondyoungest. Martinez was then a quiet town, but during WWII its location close to Navy and Army basesgave it another life. Serving the armed forces population, Martinez had a USO and a popular sodafountain where the young Connie worked behind the counter. One fateful night in 1943 a young USMarine, Mike Malone, came in for a milkshake, and soon began to come regularly. The night of thePort Chicago explosion, Connie remembers hearing the blast, and she went back to work that day inorder to make sandwiches for those fighting the ensuing fires. Not long after that day, Connie andMike began spending time together, enjoying many an after-work moonlit walk home. On October 14,1944, they were married and, in their honor, the soda fountain closed early. Happily, Mike and Connie had a daughter, Patricia, and almost ten years later their seconddaughter, Terri, was born. While raising their family in Martinez, Mike worked at the Avon Refineryuntil his retirement, and Connie worked for Title Insurance and Trust for 45 years. She was also activein the Lioness Club, helping to raise money for local hospitals. Honored as Lioness of the Year in1996, she served as its President in 1998-99. Sadly, Mike passed away in 2010. Connie's daughterPatricia lives in Calpine, near Sierraville, while daughter Terri is in Martinez. She also has two grand-children, Seann and Timothy, and five great-grandchildren; their families are frequent visitors. Whileliving at the Carlton Senior Living Pleasant Hill, Connie plays bingo and balloon volleyball, andenjoys having conversations with other residents. — Eileen Callahan

“NOTHING HAPPENS UNTIL SOMETHING MOVES.” - Einstein
An article in the Contra Costa Times brought joy to my heart. As I read an article that to me,proves that the Universe does indeed move its energy to create wonderful miracles in ways thatwould never enter a human mind.
Right here, close to home in Berkeley, California, this miracle took place. To quote the staffwriter, Jackie Burrell, “Call it kismet or maybe an irresistible alignment of stars and planets.”This is a wonderful accounting of a family who already had two grown children and a youngdaughter who loves to play soccer. Robin Dalrymple is an art teacher and her husband, John,is the executive director of the county Labor Council. Three years ago they adopted Olya froma Kazakhstan orphanage. There was no background information on the child, no details abouther parents.
Through the KidSave International Summer Miracles program, the same program that broughtOlya to them, the Dalrymples were asked to take another student for the summer. As miracleshappen, she had the same last name as Olya. Could it possibly be that they were cousins? Asphotos were exchanged, the family thought there was some similarity.
When Ralsa arrived the resemblance said it all. Even though her hair and eye color were differentthan Alya’s, they both had the same heart shaped faces, dimples and grins. The DNA resultsproved without a doubt, what they couldn’t believe – the girls were indeed, biological sisters! There were tears and giggles when the girls found out. And Olya told the reporter, “I beggedand begged to adopt her -- and my parents fell for it.” It would be difficult to find a happierpair of sisters.
I see this as an excellent example of what is available to each of us when we are open to thepossibilities that this Universe has to offer. Often we place ourselves in boxes and never openthe lid because of fear or other hang-ups. We may peak out a bit, then pull back instead ofstepping out and being open to life.
Think what would have happened had twelve year old Ralsa been fearful of traveling. She wouldhave traded a warm loving family for fear. What do our fears keep us from experiencing? Howmany miracles have we missed because we didn’t believe in them.
Do you need a miracle in your life right now? What will you be willing to let go of to have it?
1. Be open to new possibilities2. Release old beliefs so that new ones can enter3. Believe that miracles still happen to ordinary people4. Be clear on what you need, then ask5. Don’t be afraid to let a miracle enter your life
