A. Summary of the Lesson Plan:This social studies lesson plan is designed for 3rd grade students to learn how to

create their own key. This lesson uses worksheets to help students create a map.

B. Target Population:

Grade Level: 3rd

Skill Level: students of all learning levels

Grouping: whole group- review; independent-following and completing the

worksheet

E. Procedure:1. The teacher and the students will review what they learned about keys

yesterday. Today we are going to be creating our own keys. I will give you amap and a sheet of directions. You will follow those directions. In each room you

draw something. I want you to create a key on the bottom right side of thepaper. Make sure you label your key and label what each symbol is. Do notcreate the key until you are finished with all of the directions.

2. Allow time for students to read and follow the directions. The teacher will bewalking around the classroom at this time to monitor the students.

3. Once everyone has finished, bring the class back together and talk about theirwork.

4. CLOSURE: The class will review what a key is. They will also review the cardinaldirections. They will also review how to read a map.

What will you use to measure student understanding?

The teacher will use the completed worksheet to measure studentunderstanding.

Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from thelesson.

If the students can successfully complete the worksheet, they will understandthe concepts of the lesson.

I think the review would be the easiest part to teach. The students already

know what a key is, what the cardinal directions are, and how to read a map.
