Barnet Market. A letterfrom Chris Smith. On Monday April 23rd the FoBMCommittee had a meeting withUBS/Spires – the new owners of BarnetMarket.

Present were Theresa Villiers (a Friendof Barnet Market), our three wardcouncilors, Richard Cornelius (Leader ofthe Council), four senior council planningofficers from director level downwards, JoLove (an executive from UBS), two seniorpeople from Savills (Spires managingagents), Graham Trotman (manager ofthe Spires and Barnet Market), twoexperts from Quarterbridge (UBSengaged consultants on Markets) and, ofcourse, FIVE of the Friends of BarnetMarket.

Following discussions the FoBM

secured action on the following threeessential points:1. The need for immediate resurfacingand the removal of the ugly hoarding.2. The need for far better connectivitybetween the Market, the Spires and theHigh Street.3. The need to continue to enshrinespace for a stall market as a conditionof ANY future planning permission thatmight be granted for developments onthe site, no matter who the owner mightbe.

It was also agreed that Barnet Marketshould remain an outdoor stall Market, should be expanded to 40 stalls asquickly as possible and should re-takeits rightful position once more – asabsolutely central to the character of theTown. So.... we will have our famousBarnet Market back! 800 years old and

still thriving! And I am told on thegrapevine that it is going to be justsuperb. This is an out-and-out victory forFoBM whose unstinting support andpatience with regard to this issue hasbeen exemplary. We have never askedFoBM supporters for contributions, wehave never acted politically or appliedany kind of unfair leverage to thesituation. We have achieved this result byfair means, with sensible and patientdiscussion. Your support is testimony tothe good sense of the people of Barnetand we thank you from the bottom of ourhearts.

Work on the new Market will start verysoon.Chris SmithFriends of Barnet Market.

The Royal Jubilee Bells. The Hadley Wood news visited local resident Jeremy Platten (seen here during a visitto the foundry by Prince Charles) to learn about the Royal Jubilee Bells. Jeremy hasbeen employed by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry since 1966. He told the News aboutPrince Charles’s visit to see the ring of eight new bells which were cast at the foundryin February and March. Ranging in weight from 481 to 162 kgs the bells werepresented by several Livery companies as well as private individuals. Each bell isnamed after a senior member of the Royal family. The Vintner’s bell, named Elizabeth,is a tenor bell with a G sharp note. As many of you will have seen during the pageantthe bells were mounted on a special belfry on the leading barge. As the barge

proceeded along the river the bells were rung andanswered by other bell towers from the riverside.

Eventually the bells will be hung in the tower ofthe parish Church of St James’Garlickhythe onGarlick Hill.

Jeremy was delighted to meet Prince Charleswho visited the foundry a few weeks ago to checkon the progress of the new bells.

Abacus Mental MathsProgramUCMAS (Universal Concept MentalArithmetic System for children aged 4-12years) is a leading worldwide ABACUSmental arithmetic education providerfounded by Dr Dino Wong in October1993. The success of this uniqueinstructional method in learning mentalarithmetic has spread rapidly in 40countries across the world and millions ofchildren study with UCMAS everyday.

In UCMAS students initially use the toolABACUS for performing arithmeticcalculation by the manipulation of beads. The practice of Abacus successfullyremoves the fear of numbers andgradually makes arithmetic fun to learn.

This enables them to achieve a highlevel of speed, accuracy andconcentration. The system is very simple, needs only 10-20 minutes of practicedaily and does not affect other academiceducation.

Initially the child takes the help of theabacus in calculation. Over a period ofregular training and practice they are ableto visualize the image of the abacus intheir mind and master any arithmetic

calculation within a few seconds withoutrelying on any gadgets or even theAbacus.

UCMAS enables children to developindependent learning skills, progressingthrough their own efforts, and reapingtheir own rewards, all within a stipulatedperiod.

There are 10 levels each completed in12 weeks. A weekly 2 hour class. 10-20mins daily practice. Level assessmentswith certificates upon completion.

We were delighted with the week-end of events under the titleof 'More than Gold' at St Paul's Church. There were over 90teenagers from various local youth groups in the area whoenjoyed the inflatable assault course and various activities inthe grounds along with a talk on what would Jesus say toUsain Bolt. The fun run around the Crescent, was wellattended and raised over £1100. This will be split equallybetween the church and Noah's Ark - a charity that is buildinga children's hospice in Barnet. It was good to see CharlieThompson coming first in the Fun Run thus impressing hisboss local MP David Burrowes. David then awarded theprizes and gave us a personal talk on what is more than goldin his life. In the afternoon we had a 'Mini Obstacle Course' fortoddlers followed on by 'It's a knock out' which proved to be

popular with the teenagers and even some adults!. In theevening at the Golf club there was a sports quiz lead by theDirector of Christians in Sports, Graham

Daniels, who pointed out there is more than gold in sportingachievements. The next morning he was our guest speaker atchurch and this was followed by a tennis competition downat the tennis club organized by

Chris. The final event was the popular dog show that sawsome impressive acts from our canine friends. JohnLeatherdale’s photos of the weekend can be seen on thecentre pages of this magazine.

Many thanks for everyone being part of these events anddo join us in the future.Rupert Mackay. Vicar of St Paul’s Church

Patients on the NHS list are excludedSt Mary’s ChurchMonken Hadley.Lighting the BeaconSt Mary’s Church at Monken Hadley hasbeen there since 1494 though there hasbeen a church on the site for muchlonger. Its ancient iron beacon alsoknown as a fire pan, cresset or pitch potis up on the south west corner of thetower. It was put there by monks to guidewayfarers crossing Enfield Chase and fortravellers to and from St Albans.Preceded by a party, the beacon waslighted again on the evening of MondayJune 4th to celebrate the DiamondJubilee.

As many will know the 500 year old StMary’s church at Monken Hadley is theproud possessor of the oldest beacon inthe country. The beacon, also known as acresset, pitch pot or fire pan is situated atthe south west corner of the tower. It wasoriginally placed there by monks to act asa landmark for wayfarers crossing EnfieldChase at night or journeying to and fromSt Albans. On Monday night June 4th itbecame one of over 4200 beacons litacross the United Kingdom, ChannelIslands, Isle of Man, Commonwealth andOverseas UK Territories. The first was litin Tonga and St Mary’s was the last in thebeacon chain to be lighted before theQueen lit the beacon at BuckinghamPalace at 10.30pm.

The Ceremony lead by the Rector

Rev’d Dr Thomas Renz started at 10 pmon a fine evening in front of a large crowd. After prayers Dr Renz lighted an agedhorn lantern from a candle on the altar. This was lifted to the top of the tower byrope and pulley. Patrick Evans a localresident was responsible for lighting thebeacon and reports as follows.

‘The beacon cresset contained fagotsmade from dried slats of wood soaked inparaffin and tied by wire into a bundle. The old option of using pitch would havebeen a bit hazardous for the crowdbelow! The cresset itself has a ventilatedbase so needs to have solid fuel. Thestretch to reach the fuel for lighting wasquite exposed at that height so it wasimportant to have it set up for easylighting (as in one touch). For thatpurpose at the top of the tower wetransferred the flame from the lamp to abutane lance and then onto the beacon’.All went well, the beacon lit perfectly ontime and St Mary’s played its historic partin the Jubilee celebrations.Photo by John Leatherdale

90th AnniversaryOn 27th May Hadley Wood Golf Clubcelebrated the 90th anniversary of theopening of the course in some style witha book launch and a celebration lunch.

The immediate past captain, SamHusain, who is the Chief Executive ofFoyles Books, decided to mark theoccasion by publishing the secondedition of Pat Taylor’s interesting andinformative book on the history of theclub. She explains how the golf clubcame about as a result of themismanagement of Enfield Chase, aroyal hunting forest from 1421 until 1777;a failed residential development schemein the 1890s; and the property lyingunsold and derelict for 20 years until thedirectors of a shipping company boughtthe land and built the golf course. Thedesign of the course was entrusted toAlister Mackenzie, who went on to designRoyal Melbourne and Augusta, and iswidely regarded as the greatest coursedesigner of his time.

The illustrations for the book werecompiled by John Leatherdale andinclude both historical and currentphotographs of the club and its variedactivities, including bridge, snooker, catering, partying and entertainment, notignoring members’ golfing achievements.Don Bailey organised the design andproduction and selected Michel Nichollsof Malting Studios to create it.

On the day, there was a book launch
