all. St. Paul’s Church, Hadley Wood wasfounded in March 1911 and was builtthanks to the land donated by the localdeveloper (Hadley Wood itself onlystarted in the 1890s with the arrival of therailway), and contributions from localfamilies. St. Paul’s is unique in that it wasbuilt by contributions from the localcommunity and is owned and run by alocal trust, although it is within the Churchof England. “We wanted to host aweekend of celebration that gives thanksto God for the past 100 years of Christianministry in this place and also to welcomein all members of the community ourvarious events. We tried hard to put onsomething for everyone!” said local vicarRupert Mackay,Part of the money raised from the

The Dog ShowOn the Sunday afternoon we wereblessed by beautiful sunny weather forthe dog show in the grounds of StPaul’s. We were overwhelmed with 28dogs entering, in addition to human andcanine spectators. There were 12different classes to include every kind ofdog, ranging from ‘Waggiest Tail’ and‘Most appealing eyes’ to ‘Best Veteran’and ‘Best Handler’. The ring waspacked with entries for “Best pedigree”but, perhaps as a reflection of HadleyWood, the “best Crossbreed” class wasless well supported! Rupert kept theshow flowing as a wonderful compere, and presented rosettes and medals tothe winners. The judges, Brian Aldridgeand Rose Jenkins, were delighted tosee so many beautiful dogs andchoosing winners was very difficult!

Brian is a vet and lecturer whospecialises in large animals and used towork at the Royal Veterinary College.Rose is a local dog owner who trainsand competes successfully with her twodogs. (She recently competed at Cruftsin the Young Kennel Club Freestylefinals, finishing second, and also tookpart in a display in the Crufts mainarena). At St Paul’s she gave a shortdemonstration of how to train yourdog to do simple tricks. Many peoplestayed on with their dogs to have ago themselves. We were absolutelydelighted that so many people came tojoin in the fun with their dogs and theevent was a great success, if not a littlechaotic at times! The friendly competitivespirit of it made for a very funatmosphere.Rose Jenkins, Christine Jenkins

Dear EditorYour readers might be interested tohear that St Martha’s school receiveda standard ISI inspection and anOfsted Section 48 inspection recently. As a Catholic school, James Sheridan,Headmaster was particularly pleasedto achieve ‘outstanding’ in all tenaspects of the section 48 inspection. ‘Ido not know of any other school whohas managed this with the mix of faithbackgrounds that we have at StMartha’s. It is testimony to the excellentcommunity cohesion that pervades ourschool. We are very proud of this.’The ISI reflects the Section 48 report

and is a glowing testimony to theoutstanding work that is clearly goingon at the school. The inspection teamworked closely and in harmony with thestaff and management to reach theirfinal conclusions which were equallyimpressive. Mr Sheridan is delightedwith the outcome. ‘I am very proud ofour school. The inspectors did a

wonderful job and established a goodunderstanding of the outstandingachievements at St Martha’s. Asalways, the team provided us withtargets for going forward. It can bequite a challenge for an inspection teamto get inside the culture and ethos of aschool, but the wonderful commentsmade about the quality of our academicachievements, our girls personaldevelopment and the outstandingmanagement reflect the hard workthat has gone into the last few years bythe dedicated team of professional at StMartha’s. Both teaching and non-teaching staff are very proud of oursuccess. I am sure that the foundingSisters of St Martha’s must be veryproud of their school. I am equally surethat our parents will read the reportswith pride and be gratified in theknowledge that St Martha’s has beenconfirmed as the right choice for theirdaughter.’The reports are now available to

download from the school websitewww.st-marthas.co.uk

Dear EditorI was wondering if you could help me?We live on Cockfosters Road and havehad a problem with foxes of late. Wehave noticed three foxes thatconstantly keep wandering into ourgarden. They come right up to theback door of the house and look inthrough the conservatory windowswithout fear. They are seen during theday as well as the night. My concernis that I have three young children andone of the reasons for moving to thisarea was so they could enjoy outsideactivities in the garden; I have spokenwith both a pest control company anda experienced animal carer who haveindependently told me that one reasonthese foxes are staying in the area andbecoming increasingly less fearful ofhumans is because someone must befeeding them — specifically, the foxeshave got used to being fed by anindividual from the back door of thehouse, Is there any way that this issuecould be highlighted in the HadleyWood News? Many thanksBita Manzouri
