The Wilbraham’salmshouses.Simon Smith is the Clerk to the Visitors(Trustees) of the Jesus Hospital charitybased in Union St. Alms, Simon tells me,comes from a Greek word eleemosynemeaning compassion. The word itself isderived from eleos. Pity in English.Simon recounted the story of the

charity’s longstanding and proudtradition. It was founded by JamesRavenscroft in 1679 who built the originalsix almshouses in Wood St for ‘six poorand ancient women who shall be widowsor maids’.Simon explained that there are over

1800 separate almshouse charitiesthroughout the UK. In Chipping Barnetalone there are the Thomas WatsonCottage homes, the Eleanor Palmer Trustand the Leathersellers. The JesusHospital Charity itself has fifty fouralmshouses in the area. Manyalmshouses were built just to help needypeople, others, such as theLeathersellers and Thomas Watsonalmshouses, were for the retiredemployees of these industries. EleanorPalmer is typical of many such generousbenefactors. She was a wealthy ladywhose father was Keeper of Henry V11’streasure. Surviving the plague, twomarriages and the birth of eight childrenEleanor gifted land both in Barnet andKentish Town for buildings to house thepoor and needy. The Wilbrahams almshouses will be

familiar to many of you. These are thelovely old buildings you pass on yourright on Hadley Green Road when

approaching St Mary’s Church atMonken Hadley on your way from Barnet. Now celebrating their 400th yearanniversary they were built by Sir RogerWilbraham. Sir Roger, born in 1553 inCheshire was appointed Solicitor Generalin Ireland by Queen Elizabeth 1st, laterbeing knighted by her successor KingJames 1st. He was buried at MonkenHadley Church and his monument, withhis wife Mary and their daughters, can beseen inside the church to the left of theSouth entrance. Many of the very old andsmall charities later developed financialproblems but happily were absorbed bytheir larger compatriots. Wilbrahams

properties are now cared for by the JesusHospital Charity Before you rush up toUnion St to demand a place let me tellyou that these particular almshouses areonly for ladies aged 50 and over. Theoriginal criteria for entry excludes menand any women ‘suspected of Sorcery orWitchcraft or charming. Or if CommonDrunkard, Common Scold or Backbiter.Nor idiot or lunatic or infected with anyfoul or loathsome disease’.Happily the criteria for women have

become less strict. Though the JesusHospital almshouses are still only forwomen this is not discriminatory but is inaccordance with the original wishes aslaid down by the benefactors in their wills.Simon showed me round an unoccupiedalmshouse in Wood St. Clean, modernand compact it is a tribute to the effortsof the charity and its staff as well as thosetrustees who give their expertise and freetime to continue the great legacy left bythose the ‘kindly English gentlemen’ MrJames Ravenscroft and Sir RogerWilbraham. If you would like to know more please

Stroke: an updateStroke is a justifiably feared disorder. A 45year old man has a 25% chance of astroke before he reaches 85. A quarter ofpeople die within a month of a stroke anda half of survivors will be left dependentfor some daily activities of living. Whatprogress has been made in strokemedicine to offer us some hope? brief survey will focus on the 90% ofstrokes that are ischaemic strokes (bloodclots) rather than brain haemorrhages.Better outcomes in the last decade are

due to improved prevention and fasterand more specialist management ofacute strokes. The important preventativestrategies are straightforward. Smokingdoubles your risk, but within a year ofstopping you have eliminated half theexcess risk. So stop smoking! Controllinghigh blood pressure (BP) is vital. If yourBP is over 140/90 (even lower if you arediabetic) you reduce your risk of strokeby 30% if you taketreatment. Controlling highlevels of blood cholesterolsimilarly reduces the risk.Exercise, weight reductionand moderating excessalcohol have all beenshown to benefit. If youhave experienced anycirculatory disorder suchas angina, vasculardisease of the leg arteriesor a transient ischaemicbrain event (TIA) you should be on bloodpressure, cholesterol and anti-platelettreatment promptly. Another importantmodifiable risk factor is the commonirregular heart rhythm known as atrialfibrillation (AF). Warfarin reduces the riskof stroke with AF by two thirds and isusually started after a simple riskassessment by your GP (known as aCHADS2 score). Low risk patients will useaspirin. NICE has recently approvedDabigatran as a potential replacement forWarfarin in stroke prevention in AF (aslong heart valve problems do not exist).Potential advantages include superiorstroke prevention and no need for regularblood tests. It precise role is still underevaluation.Recognising the onset of a stroke is

vital. If you can receive thrombolysis withalteplase (a clot-busting therapy) within 3hours of stroke onset there is a much

better chance of goodrecovery. Evidence alsoexists that there is benefitup to 4.5 hours. The FAST test helps.

Has the FACE fallen onone side?; Can theperson lift both ARMS oris one side weak?; Is theSPEECH slurred.? ; TIMEto act. Any one of theseshould lead you to call999 in the hope of

reaching a hyper-acute stroke centre intime. With luck the event will haveresolved and it will be called a TIA. If ithas not you will have an emergency CTscan to determine if your stroke issuitable for thrombolysis. You will also bescreened for medical factors that mightprevent a second stroke. This will includetaking anti-platelet agents (aspirin anddipyridamole or clopidogrel) for life aswell as the drugs mentioned previously. Ifyou have had aFace fallen?Arm Weak?Speech Slurred?Time to act. 999

TIA (or a mild stroke) your carotid arterywill be scanned to see if it harbours asignificant narrowing, as surgicallyrelieving the narrowing will reduce yourchance a more severe stroke

subsequently. Therapies under evaluationinclude cooling the body after acutestroke to reduce brain damage andcatheter techniques of retrieving clots ifthrombolysis is ineffective. On the distanthorizon are treatments such as stem cellinfusions to improve recovery ofdamaged brain. Progress is thereforebeing made in this common disablingdisease. Hadley’s runners.RACE FOR LIFE 2012 When I launchedthe club in November 2011, my aim wasto bring our community together in a waythat was totally informal and share mypassion of running. Never in my wildestdreams did I think it would be soinfectious. Our first week saw 7 womensign up for a 12 week course. Since then, the club has grown from strength tostrength with over 50 members attendingon a regular basis. The greatest rewardfor me has been to watch people lackingin running fitness, setting their sights onnew challenges. Empowered by theendorphins and the social environment, these people who once could not runmore than 10 minutes non stop are keento enter events as a club, whether it be5k, 10k, Half Marathon or a full Marathon.Race For Life was a wonderful event to
