On Tuesday, our Year 12 Leaders addressed the school community, reflecting on our school theme “HOPE – Living with Purpose” and celebrating their years as a Killester student. Hope - Living with Purpose

Every student here has hope… and you may share the same hope as someone else in this room or it could be completely different … but at the end of the day, your hope is what drives you to wake up every morning to continue working on your goals.

Our growth begins here - from Year 7 to Year 12. We would like to recognise, celebrate and give thanks for the many opportunities offered to us at Killester. It takes hope, optimism and persistence to reach our goals and full potential. Let us celebrate and be hopeful for what more is to come for the Killester community.

Karina Diaz – Sports LeaderHope rewards us even when we think it has given up on us. Without hope we lack that fundamental incentive to better ourselves - to positively progress in our lives. I had for so long hoped to be a role model in the Killester sporting community, but it was encouragement from my teacher that made me put my hand up to become a leader and risk rejection. My teacher made me realise that with hope and a craving to succeed, I could achieve my ultimate goal.

I hope that each and every Killester student takes the opportunities that this school offers with an open mind and an open heart. I hope that that they allow themselves to move out of their comfort zone and to immerse themselves in taking risks and working hard.

Martina Duong – Community Service LeaderThe Community Service Committee looks after the less fortunate. Our focus is to help and nurture the vulnerable; from struggling women to homeless people and refugees. Community Service is everywhere - it can be found in Killester’s SCIP program, in the Justice & Democracy group, in St Vinnies and Joey’s Van and in PAL and Peer Support Programs.

When you participate at school and in the community, that is the reward itself. When you participate, you have new experiences and you learn. You learn a little bit more about yourself and what you can achieve and you allow yourself to grow in essentially all aspects of your life; inside and outside of school. Your confidence grows and you are improving yourself as a person.

Think of it this way: Imagine yourself as a a flower. So, on the first day of Year 7; you are a seed. You have just been planted in the Killester oval. As you move through Years 8, 9, and 10, you get bad Maths grades, you forget your sport uniform at home, and you accidentally burn your cupcakes in Food Tech. You manage many obstacles and just as the leaves turn brown and fall in Autumn, you may wither and feel tired. But then Spring comes around and your leaves grow back. You’re green again; you overcame whatever was bothering you. You continue to grow, and you are watered by your family, friends, and teachers who support you.

But water alone isn’t enough for a plant to grow. If you paid attention in Science, you would know that plants also need sunlight and oxygen. The sunlight is your opportunities and the oxygen is the open mind and the right spirit and hope you need to allow yourself to thrive and succeed. If you expose yourself to the sunlight and allow oxygen to come in, then by the time you reach Year 12, there’s no doubt that you will have blossomed into a flower. (continued next page......)

.Hope - Living with Purpose

We’ve all come a long way since Year 7. From shy, uncertain little girls, to strong, independent and fierce young women today. I’m so excited to be graduating with such an amazing year level and I can’t wait to see where everyone goes after year 12.

I hope every Killester girl leaves today remembering this great things don’t come from comfort zones. Challenge yourself. Find your hope. Live with purpose, and enjoy the ride.

Isabella Jenkins – Arts leaderHope plays an imperative role in our lives. Hope never leaves us. We all face our own trials. Not being smart enough, not being good enough, not being worthy enough, just simply not being enough. Yet we have the ability to break through these trials, time and time again. That’s hope. We so often disregard the fact that hope only thrives when we allow it to. You are the reason you have broken free from despair, hardship and difficulty time and time again.

Each and every one of you students, teachers and parents, should feel proud of the person you are. You may feel as though you have let yourself and others down time and time again in more ways than one, but no one, absolutely no one, can discredit your ability to maintain a sense of purpose, determination and hope instilled in all of us.

I have been given such amazing opportunities at Killester, ones that have tested me, ones that I will never forget, ones that have given me life long friends, experiences that have shaped the person I am, and the person I am yet to become.

Although the year is coming to an end and I will no longer be the leader I had so long striven to be, I hope that the Killester community will continue to promote the Arts and personal uniqueness. Thank you to all who have made my time as an Arts Leader and as a Killester student, so fulfilling and rewarding. It was an amazing experience.

So, girls of Killester, continue to have hope. Continue to be the truest version of yourself. Continue to encourage your uniqueness and continue to thrive in this community.

Because when you walk out of that gate for the last time, you’ll look back at the place that helped build you. You’ll look back with eyes yearning for the new experience of the future, but eyes that hold a blooming nostalgia for the past. Because there is nothing like this place. There is nothing like this community, this home.

As we move to prepare for student elections for 2019 we encourage all students to consider the possibility of stepping up to be a leader in their year level.

There are opportunities to celebrate the end of six years of a Killester education for families and friends of our Year 12 students. Next Monday evening we will celebrate with the Graduation Liturgy and on Tuesday, the school assembly will be the final celebration and farewell for the Year 12 girls. Of course, after this last day of formal classes there is still the very important journey for the girls – exams and the completion of Senior VCAL Outcomes. We wish our girls all the best for their exams and final ATAR results and look forward to celebrating with them at the Graduation Dinner after their exams.

Be Sun SmartWe are at that time of the year when UV levels are high. Whilst some sun exposure is necessary for the production of Vitamin D, over exposure carries a risk of skin and eye damage. Sun protection times can be found at the Bureau of Meteorology website and real-time UV levels are available from the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency on the Sun Smart website. Let's all be Sun Smart!

The Mathematics Department has given the Library a charging station that can charge up to 10 calculators at a time. Girls who want to charge their calculators on this need to have their name clearly on the body of the calculator. The calculator can then be given to a member of the Library Team for charging.

On Monday, 15th October, Killester entered in three softball teams; Junior, Intermediate and Senior teams the SCSA Softball competition in Geelong. It was a big day for the staff and students because we departed Killester at 7.00am and arrived back at 4.30pm, but the lovely weather made the long hours outside much more pleasant.

The whole day had a great atmosphere because the girls were so invested in their games. The improvement in their skills and knowledge of the sport was evident. The staff and even me learnt so much.

Unfortunately we did not come back with any overall wins, but we did have one student, Audrey Tuipala leave with a medal for the best on for the day!

All the girls should be very proud of their efforts for the day, they went into each game ready to give it their best go, regardless of the outcome!

On the 11th of October, a number of Killester students competed at the table tennis SCSA competitions. We had to arrive at school early as the bus ride to Albert Park, the venue, was long.

The day consisted of pairs practising, competing, scoring, resting and cheering each other on. Our efforts paid off as we proudly brought home two plaques and two pennants for the school. It was an amazing effort from everyone who competed.

We would like to congratulate the Killester girls who represented the school at the tournament and showed great sportsmanship, the students who umpired the games, along with the other schools who we competed against. A special thank you to Ms Roberts, Ms Kennedy, Bianca, Ms Spreckley and Mr Lam for coaching us, giving us useful tips and for the support during the day.

Some Year 7s are going to be experience being an ambassador for the primary school visits this term. The reason the Year 7s are going to different primary schools is because they are going to welcome the Grade 6’s coming into Year 7 next year. They will be giving information to the students and any answering questions. The schools that I will be visiting are Rosewood Downs Primary School and Yarraman Oaks. I am so thrilled to have the opportunity to go to two primary schools. Many Year 7s are excited to be visiting their former primary schools and are looking forward to representing Killester. These visits allow our Grade 6 students to meet Year 7s and to see a familiar face when attending all the Term Four transition activities.

The Year 7 students will be writing an introductory welcome letter to their students and chatting to them at the Grade 6 parent Information Night, to be held on Thursday 25th October. The Year 7 students will have a display of their Humanities work for the Grade 6 parents. Thank you to Ms Kate Fox and the Year 7 Humanities Team for organising this display.
