Support One Of Our Scouts!

Miguel von Fedak, a 17-year-old boy scout, is collecting funds for his Eagle Scout service project. He will be replacing 240 feet of worn-down fencing in the backyard of the Bullock Center where the church hosts outdoor barbecues, fundraisers, and community activities. The current fence is rotting away and poses a safety hazard for children play-ing on the new playground built by Eagle Scout Daniel Dudziak. Any support you give will help beautify the backyard and make the area safer for the community’s use. If you wish to contribute, donations can be placed in one of the envelopes in the back of the church and be given to Lynn Jacobs, Miguel von Fedak, or placed in the collection basket. Checks can be made payable to “Our Lady of Sorrows” with ‘Fence Eagle Scout Project’ on the memo line. Please help out in any way you can! Thank you!

Mass At The Lake This year’s Mass at the Lake will be September 17th at 10:30 AM. If you have not attended this event in the past, please consider joining us this year. It is a beautiful opportunity to worship in the natural that God created. Watch for more information in upcoming bulletins. This will be the only Mass that Sunday.

Please check www.olossharon.org for a complete calendar of events at OLOS

Paint the Church - Meet the Match We have received a very generous offer from fellow parishioners. Bless them.

“My wife and I will match what others have donated toward maintenance improvements until July 31st up to $10,000”

This is a very generous offer and would surely help in making the much needed repairs.

There are envelopes at the back of the church for your specific donation to this project. If you give electronically make sure that your check states “Annual Collection” or “Paint the Church”, that way those funds can be tracked and allocated appropriately.

Consider a donation of stock. A contribution of long-term appreciated securities (stocks, bonds and/or mutual funds that have grown in value since purchase) is one of the most tax-efficient of all ways to give to OLOS. This method has two key advantages: · Any appreciated securities purchased over a year ago may be donated to OLOS and you can take a tax

deduction for the full fair market value of the securities. · The appreciation on the donated securities will be exempt from capital gains taxes. The more appreciation

the securities have, the greater your tax savings will be.

For information on how to contribute stock or any other questions, please contact Lynn Jacobs in the Parish Office. (Please consult your tax adviser regarding your specific tax situation to determine your actual tax savings)

Thank you in advance for your generous contribution to maintaining our beautiful parish.

From Senior Deacon Mike: We are celebrating the Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time reading the Gospel of Matthew.

The parable described by Jesus compares the results of sowing seed in random places. The result is the concluding statement .. “…But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and under-stands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold."

Welcome to Our Lady of Sorrows Parish. We encourage all our parishioners who worship with us to register. Our registry is a vital source of connection we use to communicate and build community. Please call the Parish office at 781-784-2265, or return this form to the Parish Office via the collection basket, mail, or in person. Thank you.

QUESTION: Where did Holy Days of Obligation come from?

Sunday is the original holy day. Gradually, people began to observe other days as times to gather for liturgy. Soon, these days were also civil holidays: the original long weekend! It didn’t take long for these days to multiply: Italy today has twenty-two Holy Days, and nearly all of them are stretched into a long weekend! In the USA, bishops fixed the menu at 6 days in 1885. Before that, English, Spanish, and French communities in North America kept different calendars. When

ties with the Diocese of London were severed in 1777, Catholics here were left with 11 holy days of obligation, lasting until the trim-back of 1885. In 1969, our bishops decided to transfer Epiphany from January 6 to the previous Sunday. A few years ago, our bishops in the American west moved Ascension Day from Thursday to Sunday. Because many American Catholics have to journey long distances for Mass, our bishops have decided to lift the obligation in certain instances when a holy day falls on a Monday or Saturday. The goal is for everyone in the faith community to be able to keep the obligation by gathering for Mass, and for celebration and feasting. When a “Holy Day of Obligation” is announced, our tradition is to assemble at the tables of God’s Word and the Eucharist.
