HANSON Friday, August 8 • Enmore Theatre

THE WAR OF THE ROSES Friday, 9.30 • ONE

This hilarious farce directed by Danny DeVito could well be his finest moment both in front of and behind the camera. The Roses, Barbara and Oliver (Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner), live happily as a married couple. Then she starts to wonder what life would be like without Oliver. Both want to stay in the house, and so they begin a campaign to force each other to leave. Things quickly escalate to hilarious proportions.

Pop-rock behemoth Hanson, are back with their brand new album Anthem along with the album's lead single Get The Girl Back.

This tour will mark a welcome return for the band to Australia following their 2012 Shout It Out tour, on which all shows across every major capital city sold out.

The infectious new single Get The Girl Back, showcases the band's signature soulful pop-rock sound, and features guest appearances from members of fellow pop-soul connoisseurs Fitz and The Tantrums.

Anthem's guitar-driven sound pulls from some of the band's harder hitting rock and R&B influences - from James Brown, to early Michael Jackson, and AC/DC.

THELEGO MOVIE Out Now RATEDPG

The story follows everyman or every mini-figure Emmett who is living life strictly according to the "instructions". Everything is going swimmingly for Bricktown's most obedient construction worker until he is identified, via a prophecy form the ancient sage Vetruvius (Morgan Freeman), as the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the whole Lego universe from the evil tyrant President Business (Will Ferrell). President Business, or Lord Business as he is also known, is hell bent on making the denizens of the Lego universe stick rigidly to the instructions, and in a ploy to stifle any creativity and imagination, plans to glue the world together with his secret weapon The Kraggle.

THEWHO QUADROPHENIA LIVE IN LONDON Out Now

While the manic, yet assured drumming of Keith Moon and the swooping menacing bass of John Entwhistle that made the original recording so darn powerful, is sorely missing from this live set, it's still a blistering listen and testament to the band who can still ''bring it" some 40 years after the album's release.

This double disc features, of course Quadrophenia performed back to back and tracks like Love Reign o'er Me, The Real Me and The Punk and the Godfather have rarely sounded better.

Townsend and co were never a band to do things by halves so, the second disc in this collection features a slew of clas-sics including Pinball Wizard, Won't Get Fooled Again and Baba O'Reily proving that this band is so much more than mere cop show theme tune fodder.

STEPHEN BISSET

hen it comes to redletter years, this one is definitely up there for Newcastle singer-&mgwriter MOIglIIl Evans_

Aside from releasing his debut album - an album that has been in the ARIA country charts for 14 weeks - Evans also took home three CMC Music awards, played a festival-stealing show at CMC Rocks the Hunter, toured with US country star Gretchen Wilson not to mention playing on some of the most sought-after country music stages on the planet - The Grand Ole Opry ( a stage that has hosted everyone from Hank Williams to Elvis) and at the world's biggest country music festival, the CMA Music Fest in Nashville. Not bad considering it's only July.

"There have been so many highlights this year - it's quite surreal," Evans told TE.

"Obviously the album coming out was a huge highlight and that CMC show was definitely huge and getting to play The Grand Ole Oprey and the Riverfront Stage at CMA was just phenomenal.

"The Grand Ole Opry was just one of those things that worked out - it was definitely the best gig I've ever played in my life and definitely one to tell the grandkids although there is a video of it on You Tube so I get to relive it every day. Standing in that circle on the stage, playing where everyone from Hank Williams and Elvis Presley to Keith Urban has played, gives me chills just thinking about it."

Evans added that, aside from the 'wow" factor of touring with the likes of Gretchen Wilson, Alan Jackson and Taylor Swift, playing with these industry ''heavy hitters" helped make him a better performer.

"Every time I go out on the road with people like Gretchen it's great because you just take so much away from watching them every night - it definitely helps you to appreciate your own shows a lot more:' he said.

Recorded and partly written in the songwriting Mecca of Nashville - a place that he said was almost impossible not to feel inspired, Evans' debut album features the production talents of ex-pat Aussie Jedd Hughes (Keith Urban, Emmylou Harris) and a litany of A-list players including slide player Dan Dugrnore who has worked with the likes of James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt. If there's one thing that can be said of the album it is that it traverses quite a hit of musical and lyrical territory - from the barnstorming rocker Best I Never Had to the more soulful Lave You Home and Make You Feel Like a Woman. There's even a brilliant cover of the Guy Clark classic The Cape featuring the voice of none other than Kasey Chambers.

Evans said that lyrically, the album is essentially a chronicling of his life from burgeoning Newcastle muso to rising country star.

"I've been working toward this album

It was definitely the best gig I have ever played in my entire life

since I started my first band at the age of thirteen," he said.

"Lyrically, I guess it's just life in general and all of the complexities that go with it that form the main inspiration on the album. I mean they say you've got your whole life to write your first album."

He added that despite the album being out and about for a while now, he was constantly surprised with the reception it continues to get.

"It really does shock me seeing the album in the charts for 14 weeks - it definitely maked the hard work worthwhile."

Aside from making serious inroads both here and in the US with his unaffected brand of country rock, Evans also recently stitched himself into the fabric of Novocastrian culture after penning the Newcastle Knights theme song Long Live The Newcastle Knights.

"I've been a Knights fan since, forever

so getting the opportunity to write the song is just amazing," he said.

"The Knights have had a pretty tough year what with Alex McKinnon's injury and the whole business side of things, and there haven't really been too many opportunities to sing the song this season but hopefully that will all change. I honestly couldn't be prouder."

Evans will be making a triumpbant return to Newcastle later this month. He will be bringining Tamworth-bred artist Ashleigh Dallas whose formidable live chops were showcased at the Kasey and Nash Chambers-led Foggy Mountain Jam show.

"I always look forward to playing Newcastle, obviOusly, but this show is going to be huge. I can't wait."

Gelabea J ust when you thought things

couldn't get any hairier for Adelaide quartet, The Beards, they've only

just gone and released possibly the definitive pro-beard album of all time - The Beard Album.

STEPHEN BISSET

Australia's most hirsute four piece are currently in the middle ofamassive Australian and New Zealand tour, preaching their beardy gospel far and wide.

"The shows have been going brilliantly;' bass player Nathaniel Beard told TE.

"The levels of beard enthusiasm have been really high -1 mean 1 have always been passionate about beards, some may say too passionate, but it seems that a growing number of Australians are as well, which is great to see?'

Beard said that the latest album could very well be their magnum opus and despite callingtheir lastalbum,Having a Beard is theNew Not Having a Beard, the greatest album ever recorded, it could also be their best one yet.

''Yes, we did say that about the last record, but 1 would have to say that The Beard Album goes at least one better;' he said.

''I don't want to slag off the last record but, in fairness, we hadn't heard this one yet.

''For years we wanted to put out a record that was in the spirit of The Beatles' White

Album or Metallica's Black Album - we were going to do it with the last one, but we felt that it just wasn't beardy enough - you know as your beard gets older and wiser you do gain a deeper appreciation

of what a beard can be and that's where we are with the new record?'

The Beards have been long-time visitors to Newcastle since their inception in 2005 and Beard said this was largely

due to the amount of beard love in the region.

"I would say that Newcastle is one of the most beard-friendly places we've been to and we've been going there right from the start.

"There's a lot of full-on beard appreciation up that way which only seems to be growing with each visit:'

It seems beard fever may be catching after the band took their unique brand of beard and folk-infused rock to Europe earlier this year.

''Yeah the Continentals just loved it;' Beard enthused.

"Especially the Germans - they were just beard crazy. There was lots of chanting about beards and lots of spittle forming in the comers of mouths 1 can tell you that:'

Looking ahead to their Newcastle show, Beard had some sage advice for people thinking of sprouting some hair in time for the gig.

"The best advice is don't shave - that's a fool's errand;' he said. ''Anyone who tells you that shaving promotes thicker regrowth is having themselves on. ''Also, 1 would tell people not to feel ashamed if their beard isn't the most luxurious in the room. It could be a nice, neat employment beard or a scruffy bit of bum fluff - just so long as you're having a red hot go at experiencing what it's like to live with a beard?'

JERSEY.OYS Directed by Clint Eastwood, Jersey Boys is a musical biography of the Four Seasons-the rise, the tough times and personal clashes, and the ultimate triumph of a group of friends whose music became symbolic of a generation.

Far from a mere tribute concert (though it does include numbers from the popular Four Seasons songbook), Jersey Boys gets to the heart of the relationships at the center of the group-with a special focus on frontman Frankie Valli, the smallldd with the big falsetto. The core of the show is how an allegiance to a code ofhonor got them through gambling debts, Mafia threats and family disasters.

How To Train Your Dragon 2 [Rated PG] 4/5 Reviewed at Event Cinemas Glendale by Paul Monforte

The sequel to the 2010 animated box office smash sees our heroes, Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel), now 20 years old and looldng to expand his horizons beyond the viking village ofBerk.

Accompanied by colleague Astrid (America Ferrera) and his faithful dragon, Toothless, Hiccup learns of an evil plan by warlord, Drago (Djimon Hounsou) to assemble a dragon army.

Hiccup's father Stoick (Gerard Butler) is well aware of the Drago's capabilities and warns his son to prepare for war. Somewhat naively, Hiccup believes a simple face-to-face chat with Drago will see an end to any potential conflict and heads off to begin the negotiations. Unfortunately we see Drago prefers violence to words and Stoick is forced to call on the troops to rescue his son.

Children will be enthralled with the action right from the opening scenes with enough humourous and tender moments thrown in to ensure the youngsters won't be overwhelmed by the themes of fighting dragons.

Transformers: Age of Extinction [Rated M] Reviewed at Event Cinemas Glendale by Stephen Bisset

115

Just when you thought Michael Bay had said goodbye to the cinematic equivalent of a Krispy Kreme doughnut -The Transformers franchise -he's back with essentially a reboot and this time around things are longer (almost three hours in fact) more convoluted and just more plain ridiculous than ever. Things pick up around five years after the last film and instead ofShia LaBeouf as the leading man, we have Mark Wahlberg as an amateur inventor with the most ridiculous name in film in the last five years -Cade Yeager.

After Yeager inadvertently buys Optimus Prime Oeader of the good guys) from an abandoned movie theatre, the plot quickly devolves into a convoluted mess involving government conspiracies, dinosaur transformers and an element called Transformium (I mean, really?). It's almost as if the plot was a necessary evil for Bay who uses it as filler between the headache inducing action sequences. The stock-standard bells-and-whistles set pieces are here in spades, but it's a case of it's all been done before.

With an unrivalled quantity of songs in the arsenal, they have been gigging solidly in the Newcastle area for the past four years.

They say they have never played the same show twice, keeping every performance unique, fresh and driving with a spontaneous energy.

Like many popular powerhouse bands of the past, Rubber Bullet pride themselves on only being a three-piece and keeping it all totally live.

Bass player and vocalist Mark Wood was born in Liverpool, England and returned there in the early '90S, where he spent some time in a Beatles concept band in the role of John Lennon.

Zane Penn on vocals and lead guitar has a wealth of experience also. He has been resident musician at the P and 0 resort on Heron Island and a lead member of the house band at Dreamworld on the Gold Coast as well as opening for a string of top acts, most notably being Mick Jagger on his 1990 solo tour.

Since formed, Gen-R-8 has perfected its sound with regular performances around the club scene in Sydney and Newcastle. The trio delivers a repertoire of soulful funk, swing, rock and R'n'B.

Yianni Moratidis (vocals / keys) has been performing on stage since the age of five, and can blend his voice to suit any style of music ranging from R&B to Jazz, Pop and RocknRoll.

With more than 3,000 performances as a professional musician, Peter Young (percussion/vocals) brings a wealth of musical experience and energy to Gen-R-8 and with Jeremy Barnes rounding out the lineup on guitar and vocals, this is one trio to be reckoned with.

51111 Angry after all Iheseyean

W hen it comes to Aussie hard rock royalty, they don't come much more regal than Angry

Anderson. After more than 35 years of belting out some of the most recognisable pub rock tunes in Australia, Anderson is still going strong as punters will find out when Anderson and his band The Junkyard Dogs hit the Caves Beachside Hotel this weekend.

First earning the nickname of "Angry Ant" due to his aggressive character, Anderson channeled his energy into the band Peace Power and Purity during 1971 and 1972. In 1973, he formed the boogie band Buster Brown and in 1976 joined Rose Tattoo. The anthemic hits Bad Boy for Lave, We Can't Be Beaten, Rock and Roll Outlaw and One of the Boys became symbols for alienated youth and Rose Tattoo earned an international reputation as one of Australia's premier hard rock outfits .

Aside from his role as the Rose Tattoo frontman, Anderson has had considerable success as a solo artist, notably for his 1986 power-ballad mega hit Suddenly and as an actor in such films as Mad Max ill: Beyond Thunderdome and Bullamakanka.

While the ensuing years may've seen Anderson wind down touring commitments in favour of media and charity work, he still knows how to bring it. Anyone who caught Rose Tattoo opening for Guns n Roses last year would know that the rock and roll fire still burns deep with Anderson.

Rock and roll soldiers

I t's pretty much a free kick that if you pick up an EP titled We Are a F***ing Rock and Roll Band, it's not going to

be twee indie electronica or summery roots acoustica. ................................................................................. representing who we are as a band -with STEPHEN BISSET the last one [Are You Picking Up What

Well, that's exactly what Brisbane outfit The Strums have called their sophomore EP and a more apt title could not be given.

The EP is four tracks of unpretentious, big-riffing, bam-burning rock and roll and frontman Jai Sparks told TE that the record was a pretty accurate representation of the mayhem that ensues when The Strums hit the stage

"Yeah, it's a pretty straight-up Aussie rock and roll record;' he said.

"We're all really big fans of that classic rock and roll like AC/DC and The Angels and we wanted the EP to reflect a bit of that energy so all of the songs were done in under four takes and it was pretty much just us in a room belting everything out.

"I guess this one is much better at

I'm Putting Down], there was a lot of multi-tracking and stuff, which when you're talking about a rock and roll band, is a little dishonest because it is all about that live vibe ;'

While this is one band that is all about big riffing and rock swagger, it may be a tad surprising that they got their start in the unlikeliest of places - opening up for renowned children's entertainer Peter Combe.

"The whole thing started when my house was flooded in the 2011 floods and 1 wrote an acoustic song called Oh River;' Sparks said.

"Then we were asked to support Peter Combe - he needed a band and while we were all kind of over the idea of playing in bands at the time, we decided it was a good gig so we got together for that show and the rest is history?'

Stlll_aking noise work STEPHEN BISSET

I f there's anyone who could say they have well and truly paid their toll on the rock and roll freeway, it would be

Steve Balbi. As bass player seminal Aussie rockers Noiseworks as well as outfits like The Electric Hippies and Move Trees and, more recently as frontman for the rejuvenated Mi -Sex, there isn't much of the business that Balbi hasn't seen.

Now, Balbi is hitting the road for an intimate solo show that is a little different from the normal run-of-the-mill rock sow.

"I wanted it to be a really intimate thing because I've been doing the band shows for a while now;' Balbi explained.

"I've found that I've had to shut myself up before because I do like a chat, so this show will also feature a little bit of story-telling between the songs and I'll also be playing some new arrangements of the songs that influenced me growing up - those touchstones like The Beatles, Dylan, Bowie and the harder stuff like Deep Purple?'

Balbi is also currently riding high off the back of his brilliant debut solo album Black Rainbow and he told TE while the

prospect of "going solo" was daunting at first, it is proving to be one of the most rewarding experiences of his career.

"In essence, I've made a lot of records, but never under my own name which is something that I've always wanted to do;' he said.

''Also it's a lot harder to keep a band together these days - I mean when you're 18 everyone is happy to live like scumbags on potatoes and honey com flakes - not so much when you're in your 40S.

"I've found the whole thing very liberating and rewarding. Sure, it was a little daunting at first, you have those thoughts like "what if it's a flop" but at the end of the day, I don't make records for the success?'

Aside from the solo album, 2014 is shaping up to be another big one for Balbi with another, long-awaited Noiseworks album slated for release this year.

"Yeah the Noiseworks album is done and hopefully it will be out this year;' Balbi said.

"I produced the album and the reason I did was because I never thought Noiseworks made a great record - I mean we had plenty of hits and stuff, but for me as I said before it's not so much about the success, but making bloody great music?'

Edmonds brings Iheblues

I t may've been a relatively long time between drinks, so to speak, but The Steve Edmonds Band will be making

a triumphant, blues soaked return to the Orana this Friday as well as backing up at the Mark Hotel on Sunday.

The Steve Edmonds band has garnered a reputation as one of the country's coolest blues/rock acts. Edmonds' many years as guitarist to some of Australia's finest recording artists (Jimmy Barnes, Renee Geyer, Doug Parkinson, Billy Thorpe, Delta Goodrem, Margaret Urlich, Chain, Hippo's, Matt Finish and Shannon Noll to name a few) has earned him a quality reputation as sideman to

the stars and guitarist extraordinaire. The Steve Edmonds band create a great

party vibe incorporating some damn fine playing and a hit list of classic 70'S blues drenched guitar anthems, putting the great Australian pub rock tradition back at the top of its game with an "all killer, no filler" attitude. If you're up for a great night out of live,

100 per cent rock and roll music without the corny gimmicks, cabaret pretence and drum machines be sure to check them out. You won't be disappointed.

Catch the Steve Edmonds Band at the Orana Hotel on Friday, July 4 and at the Mark Hotel, Lambton on Sunday, July 6.

As happy as rock pigs in lIIud

H aving just caught our collective breath from the unabashed frivolity that was the Gumball

Festival's tenth anniversary in April, news that its "slightly rebellious" sister event Pigsty in July is welcome, to say the least, for gig pigs everywhere.

The one day affair is raising the energy levels with this year's event, with a great lineup thatindudes the King of the North (pictured), Mojo Juju, Steve Smyth Wolf and Cub, Sydney soul funksters Gang of brothers, psych rockers The walking Who, bodacious party duo The Stiffys, seven-piece soul outfit Beaten Bodies and, of course, Dashville favourites the Dashville Progress Society.

Pigsty in July is touted as a day of luxurious indulgence, focusing on warm winter foods and an array of specially selected boutique beers, local wine and naughty cocktails. Surrounded by the warmth of food, friends, open fires and a bunch of great bands, the idyllic exdusive atmosphere of PigSty is the perfect escape from the winter flats.

The boutique event which features a '2nd hand formal' dress code, was held last year at Dashville as part of the biennial Singleton Arts Festival and by popu-1ar demand is back bigger and better for its second year at the site.

Capacity of this event is limited to 500,

it is intended to sell out, so grab your tickets early to avoid missing out.

The Pigsty in July will be on at Dashville on Saturday, July 5. Tickets are $40 and available at pigstyinjuly.com.au.
