BRIDESMAIDS Wednesday, 9.45pm • Prime 7

Dubbed "The Hangover for chicks", there is a stong case to make that this guffaw fest is actually better than its male counterpart. Annie (Kristen Wiig), is a maid of honor whose life unravels as she leads her best friend, Lillian (Maya Rudolph), and a group of colorful bridesmaids on a wild ride down the road to matrimony. Though lovelorn and broke, Annie bluffs her way through the bizarre rituals. Melissa McCarthy threatens to steal the show.

KATCHAFIRE Sunday, June 29 • Metro Theatre

Hailing from the land of the long white cloud, Katchafire have become a global roots reggae phenomenon. The all-Maori reggae band, bring their pure classic sound to music lovers worldwide, delivering one of the most authentic reggae shows around today

GRUDGE MATCH Out Now RATEDM

Sure it's predictable and possibly a waste of the talent of it's two leads Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro, but even with a clunky script these guys can make it work.

Henry "Razor" Sharp (Stallone) and Billy "The Kid" McDonnen (De Niro) are two boxers who thirty years ago were rivals. Just before a big match Razor decides to retire. Today a promoter, Dante Slate wants to have them fight each other but Razor doesn't want to. But when he loses his job and learns he's broke, he has no choice.

While some may bemoan the likes of De Niro acting in lighthearted fare like this, he brings a great amount of good humour to proceedings.

Predictable but fun.

KISS 40 KISS Out Now

If you're looking for a good starting point to get into New York's greatest make-up rock and roll band, well, this is it.

Celebrating the band's impressive 40 years in the biz, this two disc compilation, containing at lest one hit from each album release, is about as comprehensive as you can get.

While their later output is a little lacklustre to say the least (God Gave Rock and Roll To You anyone?), there are some absolute clangers on here including a live version of their magnum opus Detroit Rock City, Strutter and Hard Luck Woman

If you're already au fait with the Kiss catalogue you're already all over this, but it is a decent addition to the collection.

There is a bit of filler in here, but is the perfect place to begin your relationship with the Starchild, the Catman, the Space Ace and the Demon.

Rock royalty hils Lake Mac

A side from perfonnances from the burgeoning

talent at Rosie's School of Rock and acclaimed Newie muso Ngariki. one good reason to get along to Lake Macquarie Yacht Club for their annual Blues and Rock Day this weekend will be to witness the stage debut of a no-foolin' Novocastrian supergroup - Monsters of Rock Downunder.

Featuring the formidable talents of Craig "Rosie" Rosevear (drums), Dai Pritchard (guitar, pictured), Grant Walmsley (guitar) and Paul Coxson (bass) this is one line-up that is guaranteed to impress.

Rosie, through his work with the likes of the Screaming lets, The Retro Rockets and DV8 has become known as one of the heaviest hitters in the business while fellow lets alumni Walmsley (Agents of Peace) and Coxson, from 90S Newie faves Faceplant are certainly no slouches either. Throw Dai Prichard, who is the current axe wrangler for Rose Tattoo and who has previously played with the likes of Billy Thorpe and limmy Barnes, and you know this is going to be something very special indeed.

The band started through a chance meeting at Redhead Beach where Rosevear and Pritchard threw around the idea of banging out a few tunes and before you could say "1,2,3,4" Walmsley and Coxson had joined the Monsters werebom.

Catch Monsters of Rack Downunder at Lake Macquarie Yacht Club on Sunday, June S. The fun starts at 1.3opm.

Aulomallc for Ihe people A fier spending some time

taking stock (or as their PR chicanery suggests

"washing their clothes, detox/ rehab and writing") following a massive couple of years that has seen them release a critically acclaimed LP, Goodtimes an EP, Strangelove, and a slew of national and international touring, Melbourne eight-piece Eagle and the Worm a back with a new track, Automatic, and by jingo, it's a doozy .

Released as a 7" vinyl single for Record Store Day, the single is driven by some thumping jungle percussion, guitars and big brassy horns that people have come to expect from this lively outfit.

Since their beginnings in 2009, as a Melbourne collective of musicians led by main-man larrad Brown, Eagle and the Worm have evolved into a tight-knit 7 piece with a willingness to try anything twice.

"I didn't really want to tame it too much - 1 wanted it to be an instinctive and primal beast," frontman larrad Brown said of

the new track. "We didn't stew on Automatic much. It started with a sample from a collection of vinyl breaks I've hoarded and it suited horns and big riffs. Spot on Eagle and perfect for [producer] Steve Schram to do his thing on. We spent a lot of time on making beat cycles and percussion

arrangements, 1 love music that is built from the rhythm up." It only seems fitting then, that Automatic shares the wax with a B-side cover of Avalanches classic Electricity. "I'm a massive fan, from the cassettes, to EI Producto all the way through to Since I Left You," Brown said.

mE EDGE OF TO.ORROW

An alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world.

Major William Cage (Tom Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission.

Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop-forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying againand again. But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt).

GRACE OF .ONACO The story of former Hollywood star

Grace Kelly's crisis of marriage and identity, during a political dispute between Monaco's Prince Rainier III and France's Charles De Gaulle, and a looming French invasion of Monaco in the early 1960s.

Cast: Nicole Kidman, Tim Roth, paz Vega, Parker Posey, Frank Langella.

TBEFAULT INOUR ...... S

Hazel and Gus are two teenagers who share an acerbic wit, a disdain for the conventional, and a love that sweeps them on a journey. Their relationship is all the more miraculous given that Hazel's other constant companion is an oxygen tank, Gus jokes about his prosthetic leg, and they met and fell in love at a cancer support group.

Based on the bestselling book by John Green The Fault in our Stars stars Shailene Woodley, Ansell Elgort, Laura Dem and Willem Dafoe.

A Million Ways To Die in the West [Rated MAJ ZOS/5 Reviewed at Event Cinemas, Glendale by Stephen Bisset

Clearly a vanity project for Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane (star, producer, director and writer), A Million Ways To Die in the West, despite a great central cast and a litany of cameos falls way short of the expectations raised from his first feature directorial outing - the hilarious ''bromance'' Ted - thanks to some lazy writing and his lack of believability as a leading man.

McFarlane stars as inept and desperately self involved sheep farmer Albert who spends most of the time whining about how terrible everything is in the Wild West. After his girlfriend (Amanda Seyfried) leaves him for the foppish moustache oil salesman Foy (Neil Patrick Harris), Albert forms an unlikely friendship with Anna (Charlize Theron) an outlaw awaiting the return of her stagecoach robbing husband (Liam Neeson). After Albert hastily challenges Foy to a gunfight, Anna promises to help him learn how to shoot. Much like the Family Guy, this film doesn't have a plot per se just a string of "skit -like" scenarios weaved into a wafer thin story with only a handful eliciting genuine guffaws. Blazing Saddles it ain't.

The Trip to Italy [Rated MJ 3/5 Reviewed at Tower Cinemas, Newcastle by Amelia Parrott

- _ 2

Comedy legends Rob Brydon (Gavin and Stacey and Would I Lie to You?) and Steve Coogan (Alan Partridge) are back on the road again in the sunny sequel to 2012's The Trip in The Trip to Italy.

This time around, Coogan and Brydon are road-tripping through Italy, sampling beautiful food, beautiful vistas and beautiful women along the way.

There are plenty oflaughs to be had in the witty back-andforths between Coogan and Brydon and there's more mouthwatering foodporn that you could poke a copy of Eat, Pray, Love at.

Personally, I think this concept would have worked better as a television series - the underdeveloped romantic subplot just doesn't measure up to the hilarious impromptu banter between Coogan and Brydon -but The Trip to Italy is good for a laugh (quite a few more than I expected, to be honest) and a healthy dose ofla dolce vita.

Sundays Record are a high-energy, pop/rock duo whose engaging stage presence, catchy melodies and spine-tingIing harmonies have received a great deal of praise from crowds pretty much everywhere.

The members' varied individual influences are well represented in their live cover sets, ranging from John Butler Trio to Bon Jovi, Michael Jackson to Crowded House and The Romantics to The Beatles.

Sundays Record have been performing together for more than six years and during that time have molded themselves into an extremely versatile act.

Along with the full band line-up, their stripped-back intimate acoustic duo and solo performances are equally as entertaining and engaging.

Sundays Record, led by singer/ guitarist David Gretton, backed by bassist/guitarist Ben Travis have formed a strong musical understanding and uniqueness in their sound.

Using techniques such as vocal harmonising and multi-melodic layering, Sundays Record create an edge in their music that is not found in other acts.

D on'tbefooledbythehumble surrounds. Reeds by the Creek may be tucked into a back corner of Edgeworth Sport and Rec, but generous

servings and a friendly atmosphere mean this restaurant is anything but. It was hard not to be taken aback by the

cheery demeanours of the staff when my dining partner and I visited on Saturday night, especially when the chef did the rounds of the tables, personally checking that each diner was satisfied with their meal.

I could hear a chorus of positive responses around me, and when he got to my table, I too had to join in with that refrain.

We started with a tomato pesto and cheese bread and, although it may appear to be more bread than topping, the flavour packs a punch, virtually melting into the soft bread, serving as an excellent lead-in to our main meal.

For the main, I took on the chicken and mushroom crepe, and although I had been tossing up several options, I'm happy to say I did not have selection regret. One slice into the crepe and the steamy filling oozed across my plate and engulfing my chips - definitely better than gravy. The chicken within was soft and succulent while the mushrooms remained firm, making it a winner in my book.

My dining partner had trouble deciding also, but eventually settled on the veal schnitzel with pepper sauce. A salad girl from way back, when her stomach started begging her to stop she chose to sacrifice her salad in order to finish the veal. She said that she thoroughly enjoyed it, and I stole a bit of her sauce which was lovely

and creamy. To put that into context, I don't like pepper sauce, but I liked this one.

As Frank Sinatra would sing, "Regrets, I've had a few," but our only regret after this meal was that we couldn't fit it all in. As result, we had to turn down coffee and dessert, which I'm sure we can all agree is a tragedy within itself.

He will rock you STEPHEN BISSET

A fter being "dobbed in" by his mother and wife to appear on a UK lookalike talent show as

the late, great Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, Gary Mullen has since parlayed that initial appearance into a career that has seen him emulate his musical hero in more than 150 shows a year across the globe.

Now it's our tum with Mullen and his band The Works bringing their One Night o/Queen show to Newcastle.

"This show is definitely the most fun you can have with your clothes on" Mullen laughed.

"It's a full-on two-hour rock show that really creates a moment in time that, unfortunately you're not going to be able to see because, obviously, Freddie is no longer with us:'

Mullen, who has always borne more than a passing resemblance to Zanzibar's most famous export said that he was thrust into the spotlight, essentially without his knowledge.

"It was a bit of a conspiracy, really:' he said.

"My mum and my wife sent in an application for me to go on the show Stars in Their Eyes - where contestants impersonate celebrities and the like - and I had absolutely no idea they were doing it:'

In the end, Mullen no doubt thanked his conspiratorial family as he not only won the overall grand final he polled an astounding 864,838 votes - an all time record for the show.

"It was just mindblowing to have done so well- I had no idea that I was going to win the thing:' he said.

"The whole time I was just transfixed with a sense of wonderment at the whole experience!'

You only have to listen to songs like Bohemian Rhapsody, Killer Queen and Don't Stop Me Now to realise that Mercury was arguably the most charismatic and powerful frontman in the history of popular music. While Mullen admits he has massive shoes to fill - it's not something that he lets get to him.

"You really have to try not to think about things like that, otherwise you'd never get onstage:' he said.

"It's just about getting out there and having a bloody good time:'

MUSIC MUSIC A nlghl wllh Ihe rocking Cells Big wrap lor Holly Who HIGHLANDER CELTIC ROCK BAND AUSTRALIA was formed in 2005 by Justin Body. Justin was from the original band (Highlander) who performed a mixture of Celtic and Australian bush music. After five years of performing and struggling to keep a solid line up, whilst performing at the odd local gig and busking at the Tamworth Country Music festival, the band ended.

The vision of the new band was simple, it had to be more professional with a high standard of musicianship, perform Scottish and Celtic music at its best dressed in kilts and with a belief that the music will speak for the band.

Justin consulted Shane Crooks (Bassist) to find a new rhythm section for the band which saw David Hollis (Guitarist) and Michael Parkes (Drummer) complete the engine room and together with Nikalla Garrett on fiddle from the original band, completed the line up. Highlander received a standing ovation with the organis-ers claiming Highlander was the best act they have had. Their 2010 album North of the Wall is testimony to the bands commitment to explore and produce rich and vibrant music. The diverse album is an arrangement of well known jigs and reels blended with original works.

Catch Highlander them at Salas Function Centre on Saturday, June 14.

H aving just released their debut EP in April, things are definitely looking up for Newcastle soul

popsters Holly Who. Aside from the EP debuting at a respect

able number 17 upon release, the band were over the moon with the announcement, last week, that their single Love Me Like had debuted at number six on the AMRAP (Australian Music Radio Airplay Project) top 10 most ordered tracks for airplay. The news puts Holly Who in some pretty respectable company with the chart also launching the likes of Matt Corby, The Temper Trap, Dan Sultan and Flume.

The chart overseen by AMRAP is the number one source of new music for over 250 community radio stations in Australia.

"I just couldn't believe it," an ecstatic Holly Clayton told TE.

"They sent through an email last week letting us know and I was so taken aback that I actually replied asking if there had been a mistake.

"Most bands on there are a lot further down the line than us so we're just over the moon with it all."

Clayton said that, aside from the track picking up more an more airplay on community radio across the country, the

recognition was also a huge foot in the door for the fledgling band.

"In all honest, it has given us something to have in our hands to knock on doors," she said.

"We've been kinda hitting our heads against a wall for a little while now trying to get a foot up in this industry and, even if the AMRAP thing amounts to nothing - it's a really good opportunity which we are very keen to capitalise on."

With festival slots locked in for later

in the year and talk of new recording in the ether, it's definitely all systems go for Holly Who at the moment, and if the reaction to the EP is anything to go by, the upward trajectory is set to continue.

"To be honest, everything has been really overwhelming - we've got three festivals in the pipeline and the launch show we did at the Cambridge - our first cover charge gig - was massive and there was people there I didn't know which is great."

Ahoyl Sea Legs lind theirleet They may've only been a going

concern for a relatively short amount of time, but Bateau Bay

based four piece Sea Legs are already turning more than their fair share of heads with their infectious brand of hook-laden indie rock.

STEPHEN BISSET

After releasing their debut EP, We Do What We Do When We Do What We Do, which featured the singles Can I Get an Amen and Morse Code, Sea Legs are gearing up for EP number two and, if the taster single Take A Little For Yourselfis anything to go by, the next release promises to be a doozy.

"The song was actually released in October last year, so it is a bit of a slow burner," frontman Byron Knight told TE.

"It's good to see that it it's been getting some airplay on Triple J and some international stations as well.

Knight said the single with its spacious versus and massive, soaring chorus is a good indication of what punters can expect from the upcoming EP.

"We've just finished tracking the EP and everything is being mixed now," he said.

"It's definitely going to have a much shorter title than the last one, but it's going to be full of big guitars and really hooky choruses. We worked with Josh Telford [Silverchair, Eskimo Joe] on it and he was just brilliant - he really gets where we're coming from."

Since coming together in 2011 as a "jam

ensemble", Sea Legs have wasted little time getting their name out there and their current tour, is sure to increase their ever-growing legion of fans.

"Yeah we kicked off the tour in Canberra in absolute style opening for British India to a full house - not a bad way to kick things off," he said.
