Divine Mercy Devotion

Next Sunday, April 11th you can obtain a plenary indulgence. Divine Mercy Sunday is the title of the Second Sunday of the Easter season. St. Pope John Paul II on June 13, 2002 granted the following indulgence: a plenary indulgence, granted under the usual conditions (sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion and prayer for the intentions of Supreme Pontiff) to the faithful who, on the Second Sunday of Easter or Divine Mercy Sunday, in any church or chapel, in a spirit that is completely detached from the affection for a sin, even a venial sin, take part in the prayers and devotions held in honour of Divine Mercy, or who, in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament exposed or reserved in the tabernacle, recite the Our Father and the Creed, adding a devout prayer to the merciful Lord Jesus (e.g. Merciful Jesus, I trust in you!");

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Dear Parishioners: We just celebrated Easter Sunday last weekend. The experience of being in church with our brothers and sis-ters in faith, the sprinkling of water, the newly baptized at the Easter Vigil, the flowers, the song, and more; all gave expression to the wonderful Good News of the resurrection of Christ, the Lord. After Easter Sunday, we continue to celebrate the resurrection of the Lord for eight weeks. One Sunday is not enough to dedicate to this defining act of redemption by Christ for all of human history. We continue to explore its meaning through these upcoming weeks. This Sunday is called Divine Mercy Sunday. St. Pope John Paul II proclaimed this title for the octave Sunday after Easter for the entire church. The name of this Sunday highlights the great love of God that is demonstrated in the resurrection and his appearances to his disciples. Thomas, in the gospel today, was shown such care and assistance by Jesus to get past his doubt. Jesus does the same for us. Regarding this Sunday, we can refer to the Diary of St. Faustina to find a consoling promise given to the faithful which further articulates the will of God demonstrated by Christ’s re-demptive work made so clear by the resurrection and the peace he offers to his disciples. Jesus told St. Faustina that this Feast of Mercy would be a very special day when “all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened”. (Diary 699) Jesus promised that “The soul that will go to Confession and re-ceive Holy Communion shall obtain the complete forgiveness of sins and punishment.”(Diary 699) He went on to say “I want to grant a complete pardon to the souls that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion on the Feast of My Mercy.” (Diary 1109) Today let us gladly take part in the opportunities of Jesus’ healing grace as we seek to satisfy the conditions of the Divine Mercy Indulgence for ourselves or for others. May the Lord bless us all in this Easter Season.

Padre Darrell Da Costa

DOUBT The desire to be able to prove the existence of a divinity has troubled humanity since human con-sciousness first became aware of the divine. To this very day we are fond of saying that any number of things—from sunsets to hot fudge sundaes—are “proof that there is a God.” We get so caught up in the story of “doubting Thomas” that we fail to notice that today’s Gospel gives us John’s account of Pentecost, the be-stowing of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples following the Resurrection. Thomas, evidently, missed out not only on seeing the Risen Christ, but receiving the Holy Spirit as well. This is not to be taken lightly and, per-haps, makes Thomas’ disbelief a bit easier to comprehend. It also makes his professing that Jesus is his Lord and God—the only time the New Testament explicitly refers to Jesus Christ as “God”—more remarkable.

PRO-LIFE— Some of the evils we face today are partly our fault. Back in the 1960s, one woman, Madalyn Murray O’Hair, got prayer removed from public schools. Then they decriminalized the killing of pre-born babies. Pornography, transgendersim, and bathroom wars followed while most of us simply yawned and looked away. Our silence is destroying America. Speak out now while you still can.
